    1. WOOTENS - Pendleton Dist SC 1787 - 1860
    2. I researched records in the county offices of Pickens and Anderson Co., SC and the Greenville County Library last week and following is what I found. BENJAMIN CORNELIUS WOOTEN m. CHARLOTTE ?. On 24 Aug 1861, he enlisted in Hall Co., GA in the 24th Ga Voluneer Infantry. He died 18 June 1862 in Farmville, VA. No other Wootens shown in estate records. LAND RECORDS: I feel an explanation of land records in this part of SC is necessary. Again, it may be old to some of you but may help others. Until 1784, all land in the Pendleton District belonged to the state. In 1784, the governemnt passed a statue detailing how this land was to be sold to the public. Individuals had surveys made and then sent them to Columbia with a small fee and a land grant was made. None of these grants were recorded in District or County Land offices. The State Archives in Columbia has copies of these grants & plats and they are on microfilm at the Greenville County Library. >From 1784 until 1826, land transactions on land granted individuals, who then sold it, were recorded in the Pendleton District Court. In 1826, Pendleton District was divided into two Districts, Anderson and Pickens. (now counties) All of the land transactions in the Pickens District, prior to 1826, went to the Anderson District. All land transactions in Pickens District after 1826 are in the Pickens Co. court.
