My late dear friend was Harkless Wooten of Beaufort, N.C., a descendant of the little Washington, N.C., manumated slave Harkless Wooten, buried in the woods of the allegedly 600 acreas given him by his master, now part of Washington, N.C. Alledgedly, Harkless was the most skilled and brightest slave of the master. Harkless given his freedom, 600 acreas, a wagon, plow, and mule; on the condition that Harkless wed the master's mulato daughter by a slave. Alledgedly the master's wife could not stand the sight of the master's mulato daughter, and wanted never to see her again; the agreement with the master's wife being the mulato and Harkless would remove over a day's journey away. Harkless, the slave died, I believe, 1914, and recorded on it is the African name of his father; likely a clue to his tribe in Africa? I have four names (not counting Native American); were Harkless the manumated slave my ancestor, all my children, male and female would have the Harkless middle name! , and the males the African name too. My grandfather (James Gaston Wooten) and great-grandparents (James Sr. and Ruthie) are from that area before moving to Georgia around 1900. Any help would be appreciated.
