    1. RE: Richard Wooten (1620) and dau.Mary

    3. Joani - I have generally the same information you do on Mary Wooten Albrighton but I hope the following may help. Any records on her death would most likely be under Mary Harris and not Mary Albrighton. (I have not done this research so I don't have her death date either) Richard Albrighton, Mary's husband, wrote his LW&T 23 April 1683 in York Co., VA. He named his wife Mary and children Richard, Elizabeth and Mary. The following statement in the will is very helpful and important. "My daughter Mary may have to herself that mare with increase given to her by her uncle Richard Wooten". "I also leave her 10 pounds". (Ref: Some Descendants of Francis Albrighton, pp 39-42; Eleanor Davis McSwain) After Richard Albrighton died( apparently soon after his will was written),his widow Mary Wooten Albrighton married Robert Harris. (married between 1683 and 1693)Her daughter Mary Albrighton married Basil Wagstaffe some time in that 10 year period. On 24 Nov 1693, Basil Wagstaffe sued Richard Harris "who married ye widow of Richard Albrighton" for the 10 pounds left to his wife Mary by her father Richard Albrighton. I did not find a disposition of the suit. (Ref: York Co., VA Order Book 9, page 267) I don't have the parents of Richard Wooten, b. ca 1620, except I know he was born in England. I have done research on the web in English records and think I have reduced the shires where he could have been born to about 5 or6.Also, I have identified six Richard Wootens (various spellings) who were born around 1620 but it is impossible to tell if any of them are our Richard. I emailed "British Ancestors" last week hoping I could contract with them to do research but have heard nothing yet. In response to Dr. Martha Wooten Solomon's query on "Who were Mary's parents" - This Richard is a different Richard than your Isle of Wight Richard Wooten. We had many message exchanges about the IOW and York Co Wootens on the Wooten-L a couple of years ago but I feel many folks still get the IOW Wootens and the York Co Wootens intermixed. I have not found any connection between the IOW Richard and the York Co. Richard. Mary's parents were Richard Wooten, b. ca 1620, England; mother unknown. Richard landed on Mobjack Bay, VA ca 1637 on a ship Captained by Thomas Todd. Capt Thomas Todd was granted 250 acres on Mobjack Bay on 12 May 1638 for the transporation of Richard Wooten, John Williams, John Withers, John Johnson and John Fells. (Va Patent Book I, pg 577) Todd continued sea commerce and died at sea about 1676. As far as I can tell he was not a Wooten relative. Richard Wooten did not get his own land until 30 August 1647 in Shotball Quarter which was to become part of York Co., VA.(Va Patent Book II. pg 114) Richard Wooten's land adjoined the land previously granted Captain Todd. Richard Wooten died before 1696. On 19 Oct 1696, Samuel Chappell was granted 218 acres adjoining lands of the heirs of Richard Wooten in Shotball Quarter.(Cavaliers &Pioneers of VA, Vol III, pg 8.) Richard Wooten had at least three children. Richard (II) (II added by me), b ca 1640, m. Maryann Sandifer, Thomas Wooten, b. ca 1649, m. Judith ? Mary Wooten, b. ca 1653, m. Richard Albrighton.
