My late dear friend was Harkless Wooten of Beaufort, N.C., a descendant of the little Washington, N.C., manumated slave Harkless Wooten, buried in the woods of the allegedly 600 acreas given him by his master, now part of Washington, N.C. Alledgedly, Harkless was the most skilled and brightest slave of the master. Harkless given his freedom, 600 acreas, a wagon, plow, and mule; on the condition that Harkless wed the master's mulato daughter by a slave. Alledgedly the master's wife could not stand the sight of the master's mulato daughter, and wanted never to see her again; the agreement with the master's wife being the mulato and Harkless would remove over a day's journey away. Harkless, the slave died, I believe, 1914, and recorded on it is the African name of his father; likely a clue to his tribe in Africa? I have four names (not counting Native American); were Harkless the manumated slave my ancestor, all my children, male and female would have the Harkless middle name! , and the males the African name too. Wooten is one of my brick walls, so I'm hoping you have some info that may help. There are many sites offering conflicting data regarding Jesse, Francis and daughter Mary Ann. My g-g-g-grandfather (we believe) was Jesse/Jessie/Jessiah Wooten b.~1805 NC, d.~1870 MS?. Data I've found via the web indicates sp.#1 was Francis/Frances Thompson b.~1809 NC, and they had daughter Mary Ann Wooten b.~1825 who married my g-g-grandfather Edgar Pollitt in TX ~1842-44. (Some records online show Mary Ann's name spelled Wootan). Jesse's sp.#2 was Laura Ann Brown and they had several kids, including twin boys. These folks are not in my direct line other than the link to Jesse. Would appreciate any info you (or anyone else) may be able to provide to clarify dates, places and, particularly, ancestors of Jesse and Francis. I sure need to knock a few bricks out of this wall!! At my wife's cousin's 100th birthday party in Poolesville, Md last weekend, where she taught 2nd grade from 1920-1962, there was a history of the school. The land was donated by one Dr. E. Wootton ca. 1900. I know of no connection between this branch of the family and mine, which was on the Eastern Shore of Maryland (i.e. East of the Chesapeake Bay) by 1671. Several Woottons, perhaps related, are to be found in my wife's family tree. Is anyone studying this branch of the family? The name was spelled Wootten, however, it was changed to Wooten later on. The will was written by someone other than William so, the spelling could have been a mistake. We don't know for sure. Has anyone joined then the DAR/SAR on the Patriotic service of William Wooten, Sr., of Pitt Co., N.C., who wed Nasncy Forbes? I have an SAR supplimental on Lt. Arthur Forbes, Sr.; hbis wife's father. I saw his vote on the U.S. Constitution in the Dobbs County collection, in N.C. State Archives, Raleigh. I've got his genes alright; he voted against it. Why I don't know; perhaps like me, he saw it as a too radical document? William Wooten, Sr's son, Shadrack 'Shade" Wooten wed Mary Elizabeth 'Eliza' Murphey (Murphy), daughter of Wm. Spencer Murphey* (witness on the will of neighbor Blount (John Gray?)), brother of Wm. Blount Murphey, and Wilhelmenia "Billie" Murphey. Wm. Spencer Murphey wed Sussannah Roach, the daughter of Capt. David Roach (Sr.?), Patriot. William Spencer Murphey's father was Capt. William Murphey who shared a Dobbs Co. militia company with his brother Capt. (I forgot which brother)(the company roster preample is so patriotic, so sincere; it moved me over two! hundred years later), and was the sibling of John Murphey, Jr., Jethro Murphey, Wilhelmenia "Billie" Murphey, and the brother who's name I forgot. Their father, Capt. John Murphey, Sr., killed in the chariot accident, should qualify as a DAR/SAR Patriot, as at the Constitutional convention, New Bern, he was appointed to the office of Doorkeeper when the intended appointee did not show up. The correction of any mistatements will be appreciated. Written from a poor memory. Need to see how Wm. Spencer spelt his last name on the Blount will, reproduced in the John Gray Blount Papers, but the signature is not indexed.
