    3. Some of information in the following selection does relate to a study done by Richard Wooten, however, not all information corresponds to his study. When you see a reference to "WARFA" this a reference to the previous association of " Wooten and Related Families Association"....studies were completed primarily by Richard Wooten. This information was received from Belinda Melton Hughes: Thomas Watton, baptized 9/27/1612 St. Kyneburgha, Castor, Northhamptonshire, Eng. Died 1669-1670. Arrived in Virginia 1639, appearing in document 6/18/1639. Bought first land 1/11/1645, witnessed by Arthur Wood. He married Wood’s widow. His land located head of Lawnes Creek, Isle of Wight Co., VA. His will provided that if his only son, Richard, died without issue, his lands would go to next of Kin in Castor, Eng. Married Sarah Jennings, widow of Arthur Wood. Sarah probably daughter of Matthew Jennings who died between April 1823 and February 16, 1624 at “Plantation over against James City”. Thomas was 3rd son baptized in Sept. 1612. John Pawley of James City, VA paid passage for 12 servants, namely: Thomas Watton, Richard Newland, George Armstrong, John Price, Hugh Carron, Thomas Edwards, Arthur Hughes, Samuel Crockett, Eliz Lucking, Richard Floyd, James Barnett (Burnett) and Ann Heyward. 6/18/1639, John Pawley received Patent of 600 acres in James City County for transport of above. 50 acres per person plus 4 years of their service paid passage. Patents were given for each person coming to Colonies. See Nell Marion Nugent’s “Cavaliers & Pioneers”. Vol. I, p.110 (Patent Book No. 1, pt. 2, p. 651) 1/11/1645-6 Thomas Watton acquires 150 acres from William Troloder, IOW Co. VA. Richard Wooten I, b. 1647-1652, IOW, VA d. 16587, m. Joyce. His son Thomas Wooten II, b. 1647-1652 and son Richard II, b1672-80. Thomas II m. 1703-04 m. Ann Smith?. sister of Sarah Bulger whose will of 1/4/1720, gives to her Sister Wooten some items, and after her decease to Joseph Wooten, apparently son of Thomas & Ann Wooten. Ann had a brother named Joseph, William, Nicholas and sisters Sarah and Martha. Richard Wooten II, b. 1672-80 m. 1703 to Lucy Council, daughter of Hodges Council. She had a brother Hardy Council. Richard Wooten II and Lucy Council both died before 1738. William Wooten, son of Richard II, b. c1710 m. Ann Bryant, daughter of James Bryant, Edgecombe Co., NC was a Cordwainer. William is a minor 3/28/1759 and lived in Edgecombe Co., VA/ William, Hatter, oldest son. Richard II, 2nd son. If you have additional information or corrections to this info, PLEASE post these to the Wooten list. I have also spent several hours reviewing all the WOOTEN information at Belinda's web site and will be posting additional information with requests that you correct and/or add to this information using the Wooten list. This way all researchers will benefit from our research. I hope that you are enjoying the wonderful posts by fellow researchers. Martha Wooten Solomon

    2. Al Wootten
    3. I have just joined this list, so I will post an introduction. My Wootten genealogy has been worked out by a cousin, Mr. John E. Jacob of Salisbury, Maryland, who is currently working on publishing it. The portion directly relevant to me is on my genealogy WWW page at http://members.tripod.com/~astral where it may be read in a somewhat fractured html format (I used a LaTeX to html translator). As you will see from the wWW site, my branch arrived in Somerset Co., Maryland in 1671 or thereabouts (that is when the headrights were filed) 'from Virginia'; we have never been able to prove whence John Wootten and his wife Mary originated. After a generation or so, they found themselves near Laurel in Sussex County, Delaware, where my great grandfather lived. My grandfather moved to Salisbury, Maryland, where my branches (except me!) currently reside. I hope to hear from others in this branch, or others. 3. Richard Wooton's collection of Wooten genealogy was donated to the Special Collections at the Joyner Library at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. The Joyner Library is on-line, but the catalog of the Special Collections is not. I understand the collection contains all his books, newsletters, photographs of tombstones and properties, etc. You can also find some of Richard's books at the State Library of North Carolina (where the NC Archives are located) in Raleigh, NC. I think they have 4 of his books. The Library of Congress in Washington, DC, has a couple of them. The LDS has all his books available on microfilm (and the originals in their library in Salt Lake City). I checked with the National Genealogical Society Library in Arlington, VA (Richard's hometown), but they do NOT have any of his books. 1. Re: Additional information on WOOTEN family members
    2. Charles, Jennifer and Michael Bell
    3. Hello all, I was the one who sent this information to Belinda. Actually, another family member who has researched this branch of the family sent it to me to pass on. I little explanation is needed on what we are trying to prove. In Richard Wooton's book, "John Wooten Sr. of Pitt Co, NC and his sons", the author states on page 69, " We must note that Shadrach was living in Pitt County at that time, and did not move to Dobbs until late 1788 at the earliest." The documents quoted below, show that Shadrach Wooten was in Dobbs County in 1776. The first list dated April 16, 1776 list the officers. The second document states that they were from Dobbs County. Note how many names, including Shadrach Wooten, are on both lists. Therefore, our conclusion is Shadrach Wooten WAS living in Dobbs county in 1776, long before the 1788 date that Richard Wooton determined. The reason we even bring up this point, is that our family's ancestor, Thomas Box Wooten, was born in 1783. If we went by Richard Wooton's research, then he must have been born in Pitt County. Going by the below documents that prove his father was already living in Dobbs County in 1776, then Thomas Box Wooten must have been born in Dobbs County. 1. Richard C. Wooton of Arlington, Va.
    2. Leonard J. McCown
    3. Hello Wooten Researchers: Are all of you familiar with the research of the late Richard C. Wooton? He was a great researcher and got the Wooten and Related Families Association together, but it died about the same time he died. Richard developed Alzheimers and it took about 2-4 years for him to die. Anyway there was a newsletter, and the Association also did a series of Special Studies. Several of these were on my line--Thomas Watton, the Elder (abt 1585-after 1641, England). The papers of the Association were passed along to a institution in NC by his wife. Will have to check and see which one. I had a letter from her, but can't rememeber now! Leonard. -- Leonard J. McCown People will not look [email protected] forward to posterity who never Irving, Texas look backward to their ancestors. 1. WOOTEN, EBER
    2. Hello everyone. New to the list and wanted to just share the "little" bit of info I have. My GreatGrandfather was EBER WOOTEN. He was married to ELIZABETH HARVEY, I believe in NC, abt. 1885-90. I located them in the 1900 Buncombe County, NC Census. Listed were Eber @ 34 b. Georgia, Dec. 1865, and wife Elizabeth @ 30 b. NC, April 1870. Living in Black Mountain Township. Eber and Elizabeth's children's names were: 1. Forrest Wooten, b. NC 2. Claude Wooten, b. NC 3. Walter Wooten, b. NC 4. William Will/Bill Wooten, b. NC 5. Samuel "Sam" Wooten, b. NC 6. Amos Bead Wooten, b. Brevard, NC (Transylvania Co) Feb. 1900 and d. Honea Path, SC Nov. 1962 married April 20, 1920 in Greenville, SC to: Ethel Mathews, b. Arthur, TN (Claiborne Co) Feb. 1900 and d. Honea Path, SC October 1985. Amos and Ethel's children: Lucille Wooten b. 1921 Greenville, SC - m. Haney Dean SC Walter Bascom Wooten b. 1923 Greenville, SC - m. Christine Kovar in Vienna, Austria Forrest "Claude" Wooten b. SC m. Lillian Cole (dec) SC Stella Wooten b. SC m. 1st Charlie Brown SC - 2nd Jerry Owens SC Jack Alton Wooten b. SC m. Elise ? SC B.A. Wooten b. SC m. Marlene ? SC Elsie Mae Wooten b. SC m. Willie Alewine SC Samuel "Boyd" Wooten b. SC m. Ann ? SC 7. Delia "Deely" Wooten b. NC m. ? Ellison Greenville, SC 8. Jess/Jesse Wooten b. NC m. Leury/Laurie Glazner Greenville, SC This is pretty much what I have on my Wooten's...not much, and getting terribly frustrated. I have no death information on Eber Wooten, but believe that Elizabeth Harvey Wooten relocated to South Carolina after his death. She died in Greenville, SC in the early 1930's. Living with her at the time was a FRANK WOOTEN, not sure of relationship to them, but he died in Greenville, SC abt. 1935. Most of Amos and Ethel's children still live in the Honea Path, Anderson and Greenville areas of South Carolina except for one, the oldest son, Walter Bascom Wooten, who lives in Washington State. Please email me if you've ran across his name before during your researches. Any help or info would be greatly appeciated. Thank you in advance, Sincerely, [email protected]

    3. A few researchers have notified me that they missed this first post. Please post any additional information for Mary on this list. MARY WOOTEN, b. June 17, 1792, GA; married in 1811 in Putnam Co., GA. died April 17, 1862; buried in Beulah Cemetery/ Beulah Baptist Church/ Lee Co., Beulah, AL. ABEL ROBINSON POWELL (1828 GA - 1916 AL) m. JULIA ANN DELOACH Mary's father is unknown at this time. However, there is a POLLY ANN WOOTEN listed in the GA Land Lottery, drawing as an orphan. This researcher suspects that Mary may have been known as "Polly Ann". And has found a POLLY ANN WOOTEN m. to MILLINGTON POWELL. This researcher is also seeking WOOTENs from Putnam, Henry, Butts, or Harris counties in GA or Chambers, Lee, or Tallapoosa Counties in AL. Thanks for your patience with the establishment of this list. It is not yet posted on the regular Roots Web site, but is on the list owners pages. Sorry, things will soon be totally operational.
