    3. I also had a question about the date of the death for LURANEY WOOTEN (dau. of Joel Wooten): My records had indicated her date of death as being "after 1870." I do not have an exact date for her death. But, I do not think that she died in 1859 as cited in a question to me. The following is from my database: "In the 1870 Census, Luraney is in her son's household. Henry's household contained Henry H. Love, age 28; Jenny Love, age 22; Ann Love, age 38; and Lourana Love, age 64 (Gadsden Co. Roll 129, Page 777)." [This is a Florida county census.] Hopefully, this will assist other researchers. Please continue to provide any additional info that you have on this family. Thanks, Martha Wooten Solomon

    3. Additional questions and answers: BRYANT WOOTEN son of JOSHUA WOOTEN and KEZIAH____. There was a question about his date of birth. This is all the info I have on this topic in my database: "Bryant's will was probated in New Hanover Co., NC, September 1856. Census data indicates Bryant Wooten was born in 1789 in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina. " Does anyone have additional info on this family? Thanks, Martha Wooten Solomon

    3. To clarify and answer questions sent to me by a fellow researcher: 1. STEPHEN W. WOOTEN born 1820 (son of STEPHEN WOOTEN, who was born on July 22, 1783) DID marry DELPHA ANN WOOTEN. They are not brothers and sisters. Delpha Ann Wooten is the daughter of AMOS WOOTEN ( born abt. 1781). This was in the information given. 2. SUSANNA BRYD, wife of REDDEN WOOTEN, was married on May 17, 1810. Her date of birth was an error. I do not have her date of birth. 8-) 3. BRYANT BEN WOOTEN's info on his marriage should be correct. Note that in our family we have not ever spelled JINCY LEE's name as "LEA." Also, several of their sons carry the middle name of "LEE"; these include my g-great grandfather [BRYANT LEE WOOTEN]. The marriage info was cited as follows from local Telfair Co., GA records: "Bryant applied for a marriage license to wed Jincy LEA in Telfair, County, GA, December 16, 1825. Bryant's will was probated in Telfair Co., in September 1867. Bryant Wooten was born in Edgecombe Co., NC in 1795. He gave his age as 55 in the 1850 Census." 4. ROXANN WOOTEN (dau. of BRYANT BEN WOOTEN and JINCY LEE) was not born before Feb. 29, 1895. This was her date of death in the info posted. I have not had a chance to contact family members and inquire if there is any error in her date of death which was the Feb. 29, 1895 cited. Can anyone offer assistance on her date of death? I received a message that 1895 was probably not a leap year. ROXANN was born on March 23, 1846 (as posted). 5. AMOS WOOTEN m. PRICILLA TAYLOR.....I have his death as Dec. 28, 1812. One researcher had this as Oct. 23, 1813. I now realize that both of our dates are probably wrong. However, Amos does not seem to have died in Oct. of 1813. The following is from the original documentation in my database: "In the 1810 Census Amos' household has males: two 10-16 years, two 16-26, one 26-45, one 45+; and females: one 45+ (Edgecombe Co., Roll 40, Page 52). On 11 April 1811, Amos made his will (Edgecombe County Loose Wills), and it was probated May 1812 (Edgecombe County Inventories and Accounts of Sales, Volume 1811-1813, Page 173). In February 1813, Amos' children filed a petition for the division of his land. The Division was recorded in February 1814 (Edgecombe County Deed Book 15, Pages 37-38). The children were identified as: Amos Wooten, Winney Cobb, Eli Wooten, Absalom Wooten, Eliza Edwards, Milly Corbitt, Ann Edwards, Ephraim Wooten, William Wooten, Hardy Wooten, Stephen Wooten, David Wooten, and Jesse Wooten." Does anyone have any additional info on this family? I hope this clarifies any questions. I do appreciate receiving your comments and questions. All corrections are appreciated. Please continue to post any additional resources or information you have on this family. Thanks, Martha Wooten Solomon

    1. WOOTENS IN SUMTER CO. AL
    2. Joseph F. Stegall
    3. There are courthouse and cemetery records of at least one family of Wootens in Sumter Co. AL in 1800s. Search of courthouse records would probably provide relationships of these Wootens to others. However, we can tell from cemetery records that a Richard Wooten married Mary Martha Malvina Arrington, daughter of General Joseph & Mary J. Arrington, prominent Sumter Countians of the time. A child of this marriage, Joseph Richard Wooten, is buried in a marked grave with the tombstone inscription, "Son Richard & Malvina Wooten, Mar 22, 1862 - Nov 7, 1915". The only other marked grave has a stone inscribed, "Mary Martha Malvina Wooten, Dau Gen Joseph & Mary J. Arrington, Aug 3, 1820 - Mar 30, 1862". >From these dates, one can justifiably conclude that Malvina died a few days after giving birth to her son, Joseph Richard. Joe Stegall Demopolis, AL

    3. The family of BRYANT BEN WOOTEN (son of Joel Wooten, Revolutionary War veteran, and JINCY LEE suffered greatly during the Civil War. Their son, (1) WILLIAM JORDAN WOOTEN (I) and (2) JOEL WOOTEN , both lost their lives in the war. Their son, (3) BRYANT LEE WOOTEN ( my g-g-grandfather) also served in the war, Bryant and Jincy's daughter's ( 4) husband also died in the war. Their eldest son, (5) SIMON LEE WOOTEN, is being honored in Texas. SIMON LEE WOOTEN is a grandson of JOEL WOOTEN, who was a Revolutionary Soldier. SIMON LEE WOOTEN is from the area of Telfair and Coffee Co., GA. SIMON LEE WOOTEN was a soldier in the Confederate States Army. At one point he was taken prisoner. After the war, Simon and his wife, CLARA JANE RICKS, went to live in TX. They took their children with them and had additional children after arriving in TX. Simon is buried in Kimble Co., TX and had already been honored with a confederate veteran memorial marker. After posting inquiries on web sites in TX, we located his burial site and discovered that he and the Wooten Cemetery are receiving additional honors and other markers for the cemetery from the the Historical Commission of Kimball County. The next paragraph is included to provide additional information on this event. If you live in the area, this would provide opportunities for you to be a part of this historical event. We are hoping to fly to TX for these services. I am also seeking to locate other members of the family of SIMON LEE WOOTEN and of his nephew, another SIMON LEE WOOTEN, who moved from GA to TX. The nephew, Simon Lee Wooten, went to TX with his grandmother, Jincy Lee (Wooten) and his brother, WILLIAM JORDON WOOTEN (II) after the war. During the Thanksgiving holidays we went to TX and had a wonderful time meeting the descendants of William Jordon Wooten (II). Thanks, Martha Wooten Solomon "Martha, I was happy to find you on roots web. Just an update....the historical marker for Wooten Cemetery (Kimble County, Texas) is on order at the foundry and should arrive shortly. We will be planning a ceremony after the first part of the year (probably early spring). We have also ordered and have in place a replacement Civil War marker for Simon Lee Wooten, who is buried in the cemetery. The first marker was in error, and some descendants requested us to order another marker that was furnished without charge by the Veterans Administration. The historical marker was a project of Kimble County Historical Commission, of which I am chairman. Sincerely, Frederica Wyatt"

Thaks to Della for posting David Wooten's home page address. Among other early John, Richard and Thomas Wootten families are those of the Eastern Shore. My own family derives from John Wootten, about whose origins all we know is that he came 'from Virginia'. I have examined the will of Richard Wootten, d. 1654 in Northampton County, but that gives no clues as to whom his antecedents were; he left no descendants. I also have a reference--only a court record with a statement of age--for a Thomas Wootten on the Eastern Shore of Virginia at an even earlier time. I am interested in any information anyone may have on these Eastern Shore Woottens. The information following was researched by Mr. John Jacob, of Salisbury, Maryland, a cousin. desc-henry: Descendant report for John Wootten (I1294) Generated by the LifeLines Genealogical System on 24 Mar 1995. 1. John Wootten (I1294) b: ca 1630 d: aft 1699 On October 2, 1671, Randall Revell applied for headrights on 50 acres of land for bringing John Wootten into Maryland from Virginia. (Md. Ret. Rec. Vol. 16 p. 297). Between then and 1681 I (J. E. Jacob) have found no record on him, but on July 27, 1681 he purchased from Col. William Colbourne a tract of 300 acres called Vulcan's Vineyard for 10,000 pounds of tobacco. (Som. Deed MA-06 folio 513). This tract was on the north side of Cuttomactico Creek. On November 1, 1681 he purchased from Capt. Henry Smith an additional tract of 300 acres in Nasewattux Neck called Mitten for 9,000 pounds of tobacco. (Som. Deed MA-06 folio 515). In the Coulbourne deed John was described as a sawyer. He kept Vulcan's Vineyard until June 8, 1686 when he sold it to Richard Nickells. Mary, his wife, joined in this deed. He sold for 9,500 pounds of tobacco losing 500 pounds in the deal. He and Mary sold Mitten on Sept. 12, 1699 to Thomas Pool (Som. Deed L\#2, folio 521). This deed was erroneously indexed under Outten. Since the two tracts were well separated it is possible that their son Richard lived on Vulcan's Vineyard. SOURCE: J. E. Jacob 1.s. 3. Fellow Researchers, We have added almost 100 new WOOTEN names to the lineage on our web site. If you didn't find an ancestor during previous searches give it a try again. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/7241/ We also updated some of the dates on some people. Please check your lines again to see if we have added any new info to them for you. Please let me know if you have any additions, corrections or suggestions on this web page. People have asked why I'm doing this. I was been bitten by the genealogy bug back in 1975, put the family away for about 10 years, and now the genealogy bug has become an addiction. I love making new connections on our lines and finding new and interesting information about our family. I thoroughly enjoy this! My goal with the web site is to put the lineages out where people can get to them so that they might make a connection or two into this family. I keep source records on as much info as I can, hoping if someone asks about a collateral line I can put them in touch with a cousin who is working that same line. I just thoroughly enjoy the total genealogy puzzle! I am not making any money on this site. People have been afraid to send lineages and info for fear that I'm making a profit here. This is actually costing me money and a lot of time. I do it for the sheer enjoyment of helping others! My satisfaction comes when someone discovers something new about their family from the information that we have placed on this page. This is "our" site. I use the terms "our" and "we" when talking about this web site because without you sharing the information you have, no matter how small or large, this site would never have come into existence. Thank you everyone for all you have so willingly shared and continue to share! thank you belinda melton hughes http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/7241/

    1. Early Richard and John Wootten
    2. Al Wootten
    3. So far, much of what has come across this list relates to descendants of Richard Wootten, of Thomas Watton. SOURCE: J. E. Jacob 1.s. 3. I am researching my husband's family. His great grandfather was William Thomas (W T) Wooten born 30 June 1846 (either Sc or Leon Co, FL depending on the source) and died 21 Feb 1929 in th Old Confederates Home in Jacksonville, FL. He married Mary Ann Carolina HERLONG on 25 Dec 1871 in Edgefield District, Saluda Regiment. W T served in the same regiment during the Civil War as Mary's father Vastine Jehu HERLONG. As far as I can tell from the 1860 Edgefield District, Saluda Regiment, Richardsonville, W T's parents are Jas? and Julia Wooten. W T is the second of 6 children at the time. Jas? is 36 and Julia is 35. Just above Jas? in the census is Aaron WOOTEN aged 74, and a few above Aaron is John Wooten aged 44. Vastine HERLONG and most of his children including W T and his family moved to Columbia Co, FL around 1895. I have a great deal if info on Herlong but nothing on my WOOTEN. If any of these names are familiar I would appreciate an email. Thanks so much Sue Cherok Wooten

    3. After receiving several requests for additional inforamtion on WILLIAM WOOTEN, I have reviewed my files and am sharing (1) the following post that is dated for the times it was recorded in my database and (2) computer database for four generations of William's family. WILLIAM WOOTEN Files: August 1989 William Preston article: "Records indicate that he pushed deeper into NC and settled in Edgecombe Co. william had land holdings in Edgecombe and Putt Counties. Through his sons, William became progenitor of practically every Wooten born in Edgecombe, Pitt, Greene, Lenior, and Wayne counties. He added a fourth son to his will in 1792. [Will: "To 'Ann all of my property escept a piece between Hog Pen Branch & Causeway Branch, which is for James Wooten. Witnesses: Joel and Joshua Wooten."]." mws May 1996 files of A. Wooten/source WFT CD's / received from D. Wooten "William's will was probated in Edgecombe Co., NC, May 1792. On 17 November 1728 the nuncupative will of William Rutter leaves articles to William Wooten (Isle of Wight County Will Book 3, Page 142). An inventory lists tools of the trades of leather goods maker and hatter. William Wooten was apparently an apprentice cordwainer and hatter. The occupation of hatter ties together the evidence for William's descendants in later years. On 21 November 1744 William Wooten deeded land, with "... the consent of his wife...", to James Council and James Bryant [Bryant limited to a life interest]. The land is described as "being part of a tract and deed that Mr. Hardy Councill recorded to the aforesaid William Wooten after his father's decease which deed bears date the 22nd day of March one thousand seven hundred and thirty..." The deed is signed by William Wooten and Ann Wooten (Isle of Wight County Deed Book 7, Page 16). James Bryant was the father-in-law of James Council, who had married Elizabeth Bryant (Isle of Wight County Will Book 7, Page 240 will of James "Briand" names son-in-law James Council). James Bryant was also the father-in-law of William Wooten, married to Ann Bryant. The Bryant families owned land adjoining the Wooten families' lands. William named one of his sons James, and two of William's four sons named their sons Bryant. On 6 June 1756 William Wooten, Hatter, buys land in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina (Halifax County Deed Book 6, Page 75). In a deed of land on 30 December 1779, William Wooten, of Edgecombe Co., North Carolina, sells land which he inherited from his nephew, Hardy Wooten. In this transaction, William identifies his family members as he explains how he inherited the land: Hodges Council, his daughter Lucy married Richard Wooten [II]; the son of Lucy and Richard [II] was Richard Wooten [III]; the son of Richard [III] was Hardy Wooten who died intestate and without issue. William is the eldest brother and heir-at-law [primogeniture] to Richard III (Isle of Wight County Deed Book 16, Page 222-223). On 27 April 1792 William Wooten made his will leaving property to his wife Ann, and land to James Wooten [his son] (Edgecombe County Will Book C, Page 197). " November 9, 1997 File received from Belinda M. Hughes/ Internet: "22 Mar. 1730...Hardy Council, Gent. to Richard Wooten and wife, Luch Wooten and their son, William Wooten as consideration of a law suit over trepass [Lucy Wooten was the sister of Hardy Council.] ... 500 acres on Bever Dam Swamp.
