The document that Della sent you and me, about Thomas Wooten, Surgeon, is taken from Richard C. Wooton's book, "Wootens of Isle of Wight County Virginia". Richard investigated the history of Jamestown and all references to the surgeon, to determine if he could possibly be the ancestor of the Wootens of IOW. Richard's conclusion was that this Thomas Wooten was not the ancestor. To sum it up: There is no mention of the man after that first cruel winter in Jamestown, when half the population died. A new surgeon was brought to the colony the following year, perhaps as a replacement. There is no mention of Thomas Wooten having returned to England either. His conclusion, was that the man probably died that first winter. There weren't very many women in the colony at that time, so it was unlikely that he was married and left any descendents. Thomas Wooten, Surgeon, had a son but he died early. From all that I have read the Surgeon had no claimable offspring. I believe that Richard Wooten also confirmed this. I have a copy of Richard's exhaustive work but have "cleaned up" for Christmas. Sure hated to lose the Surgeon. Could just picture him traveling up and down the rivers with Capt. John Smith! Oh well. I have the document completed by Richard Wooten on THOMAS WOOTEN, Surgeon, that I can share on the list or via e-mail. This was sent to me by Della, so I cannot take credit for obtaining it. This document is approximately 22 pages long, but I will send it to any researcher via e-mail upon request. I am also in the process of entering the total document (about 78 pages) in my word processor. This document was recently received from Christine Wooten. When this is completed, I will be glad to share it with others via e-mail. I will enter it in sections to facilitate fewer e-mail pages per document. I have a new scanner and may experiment with scanning the document. Additionally, I have William Preston's 1947 work on Thomas Wooten, Surgeon. I have discovered some conflicts with historical dates found in encyclopedias and have not shared this work with many people. However, I will enter it and let you know when it is available for request. Preston's work is a fairly short document. Please let me know if you want copies of these documents and I will start a list and send sections when they are entered into my word processor. Hello all. I just recieved the Death Index for the surname Wooten from the Register of Deeds of Buncombe County, NC. Wooten Honea Path - Amos Bead Wooten, Rt. 3, Honea Path (SC) died at his home Friday at 8:15 p.m. after a year of declining health and an illness of six weeks. A native of North Carolina, he was a son of Eber (Elber) and Elizabeth Harvey Wooten. He was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church and was a deacon of the church. He was employed by Chiquola Mfg. Co., of Honea Path. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ethel Mathews Wooten, five sons, Walter Bascom Wooten of Washington, Forrest Claude Wooten of Honea Path, Jack Alton Wooten of Clinton, B.A. and Samuel Boyd Wooten of Honea Path, three daughters, Mrs. Haynie Dean (Lucille) of Ware Shoals, Mrs. Charles E. Brown (Stella) of PresquiIsle, Me., and Mrs. William Boyd Alewine (Elsie Mae) of Honea Path. Two sisters Mrs. Delia "Deely" Ellison of Greenville, and Mrs. Laurie Glazner of Travelers Rest, three brothers, F.A. Wooten of Greenville, Claude Wooten of Mt.
