    3. Henry A. Wootten writes: Greetings, Syoung1016! Glad to meet you, and I am glad you enjoyed the website. I belong to an email list whose purpose is to explore the roots of the Wooten/Wootten family. Not long ago, we had a report on Thomas Wooten, Surgeon, of Jamestown, who was among the first immigrants to Jamestown. Jennifer Bell summarized what is known about him: 'The document... about Thomas Wooten, Surgeon, is taken from Richard C. Wooton's book, "Wootens of Isle of Wight County Virginia". Richard investigated the history of Jamestown and all references to the surgeon, to determine if he could possibly be the ancestor of the Wootens of IOW. Richard's conclusion was that this Thomas Wooten was not the ancestor. To sum it up: There is no mention of the man after that first cruel winter in Jamestown, when half the population died. A new surgeon was brought to the colony the following year, perhaps as a replacement. There is no mention of Thomas Wooten having returned to England either. His conclusion, was that the man probably died that first winter. There weren't very many women in the colony at that time, so it was unlikely that he was married and left any descendents. Jennifer Bell' I don't have your gggrandfather or his descendants in my data; I have only obtained a fraction of the work John Jacob, of Salisbury Maryland, has done on my line, which insofar as I know did not head south. We have always used two t's, back to John Wootten who arrived in Somerset Co., Maryland before 1671 with his wife Mary. As I understand the origin of the name, it is thought to originate in Shropshire near Wales, where the town 'Wootten-under-edge' is found. Wootten here means wood tun, a sort of corral made of wood. We pronounce the name with a short 'oo' as in Wood, though most people mispronounce it with a long 'oo' (never found in English before a double consonant). I am forwarding your message to the Wootten discussion list, as many there are quite knowledgeable about the Isle of Wight branch of the family, which populated much of the South after settling in Virginia early on. Richard Wooten (noted above) did an immense amount of research on this branch, much of which was published in the newsletter of his Wootten and Related Families Association. Alas, he is no longer with us but his spirit lives on in the discussion list, run by Martha Wooten Solomon. Can anyone on our list answer Syoung1016's question? 3. Hi, Penny My Wootten line is on the WWW at my genealogy site. I suspect your Woottens are probably members of the Isle of Wight branch, researched by the Wootten and related families association some years ago. I will crosspost your message to the Wootten email group I subscribe to, whose members are more familiar with that branch of the family. The family association died several years ago when the fellow who was running it took ill and passed away, as I understand it. 3. Another family post: Hi All. It's been a while since I posted any of my information...so here is the update and the brick wall. My GreatGrandfather: EBER WOOTEN (name possibly Heber) ELIZABETH HARVEY I located them in the 1900 Buncombe County NC Census, listed were: Eber @ 34 b. Georgia Dec. 1865 w/wife Elizabeth C. (Harvey) b. NC April 1870. I have no death info on Eber Wooten, but I know that Elizabeth Harvey Wooten d. in Greenville, SC in the early 1930's. My father was born in 1923 and does not remember ever meeting his Grandfather Eber Wooten. I am assuming he died before 1923 or when my father was still very young. Eber and Elizabeth's children, they had 8 that I am aware of: My Grandfather: Amos Bead Wooten - b. Brevard, NC (Transylvania Co) Feb. 1900 d. Honea Path, SC (Anderson Co) Nov. 1962. Married in Greenville SC April 1920 to: Ethel MATHEWS, b. Arthur, TN (Claiborne Co) Feb. 1900 and d. Honea Path, SC (Anderson Co) Oct. 1985. children: Lucille, Walter Bascom, B.A., Jack Alton, Stella, Elsie Mae, Forrest Claude, and Samuel "Boyd" Wooten. (all but Walter Bascom Wooten still live in SC, and are living.) Walter Bascom Wooten is my father b. 1923 Greenville, SC. Forrest "F.A." Wooten - nicknamed "Skinner". From Amos Bead Wooten's obituary resided in Gastonia, NC. Claude Wooten - from Amos's obit in 1962 lived in Rocky Mount, NC. Will/Bill William Wooten - not mentioned in Amos's obituary in 1962. d. before 1962? Sam/Samuel Wooten - not mentioned in Amos's obituary. d. before 1962? Believe he d. in a car accident with wife Flore ? in Greenville, SC. Walter Wooten - youngest of the brothers, not mentioned in obituary in 1962. d. before 1962? Delia "Deely" Wooten - lived in Greenville, SC, m. to ? ELLISON. Jess/Jesse Wooten - lived in Greenville, SC, m. to Leury/Laurie GLAZNER, had a son named Alvoid GLAZNER, b. abt. 1920. - Hopefully someone out there can help me, or if something sounds familiar, please email me. Any help appreciated. Sincerely, Beti [email protected]

    3. The following information was received for the family of James Garrett: WHITLEY/WOOTEN - Marriage 12/26/1825 in Johnston, Co., NC: Daniel R. WHITLEY (1802-1856) married Sarah WOOTEN (1810-1850). The couple moved, along with other family members, to Henry Co., TN for a very short period in early 1830s, then settled in Tipton Co., TN. Daniel and Sarah are buried in a cemetery on the grounds of their original property, Red Bud plantation, in Tipton Co., TN. This is my only WOOTEN connection. Can anyone provide additional information about Sarah's parents or siblings? Thanks, James Garrett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submitted by Martha Wooten Solomon

I guess this was a previous life. Belinda sent us a copy of a short abstract from R. Harris of the will of: Wooton, Richard undated/ 1-1-1655 9 (Woolton) Stephen Costyne, John Pashe, Marke Manlowe, Francis Stockley and his brother John Stoclkey Witt: William Geldinge, Francis Boulton I think that this Richard left no issue, but I have a copy of the will should anyone be interested. I still know no origin for John Wootten who came to the E. Shore of Maryland 'from Virginia' with his wife Mary before 1671. 3. Hi Thomas, Thanks for your response to my query. I have to say this adventure on the Wooten side of my family tree is at the very beginning. As you can see I don't have alot, much less any documentation ( first hand ) for proof. My source of info comes from a book "An Alverson Family History" compiled by Barbara Alverson Morris and published by James Gibson Alverson of San Gabriel, Ca. dated 1980. Barbara and her husband, Prof. Wesley Morris lived in Houston TX at the time of publishing. I have done a search on the internet for them and have not been able to locate them at this time. Also I have as a source my great aunt and grandmother on my mother's side who told me about "Maggie" Wooten being the wife of Charles A. Alverson. Barbara sites as her sources for the info on Maggie (Margeret) and Charles as Mrs. Ruth Wilson, Mrs Jon Stubbs, and Mrs. Robert Reid, 1978. Us Census Records, Death Certificates for Gus and Maggie Alverson, and Tombstones in Pelzer SC, Pelzer Cemetery. Considering your statment about being a "generation off" with our similar people, it looks to me that we aren't that far off. Margeret was born in 1875 which would make her the right age to be a sibling to the rest of your John Henry Wooten's children. However you do not have her listed. The only other possible clue I have been able to come up with is from David Wooten's web site http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/davidwooten/default/index.htm That lists a Margaret E Wooten born abt. 1875. daughter of, see below: James David Wooten and Mary Ann Brown had the following children: 472 vi. Eli Bryant Wooten was born about 1865. MARRIED 1ST COUSIN MOLLY PINSON 473 vii. Catherine Wooten was born about 1867. MARRIED SEABORN HARRELL 474 viii. Molly Wooten was born about 1872. MARRIED PRESTON PARKER 475 ix. Margaret E. Wooten was born about 1875. Hope to keep pecking away with this and get to the bottom of who her parents and grandparents are. I feel that all I would need is a generation or two and I will be able to plug into one of these well established lines. Please keep in touch!
