    1. PART III - The Wootens of DeKalb County AL
    2. Edward & Della
    3. Dear Friends, {This is PART III (and the final part) of The Wootens of DEKALB County, ALABAMA, an analysis prepared for Calvin Wooten by Richard C. Wooton in prior to October of 1988): CONTINUING... But there is a ray of hope! Remember that William's eldest son Jeremiah said he was 30 in the 1850. This would make him born around 1820, and consequently his parents should have been married by 1819 or early 1820 at the latest. In that case, William might appear in the 1820 Census in SC, probably with a household consisting of a young married couple with no children as yet. There is exactly such a household in Marlboro County SC in the 1820 Census, Roll 121 p 83: WILLIAM WOTON, with males 1 16-25 (himself) and females 1 16-25 (his wife Susanna). Now, curiously there is another WOTON household nearby, also on page 83, that of JESSE WOTON, with males 2 under 10, 1 16-25 (himself) and fems 1 45 or over. Who is this old lady, the only female in Jesse's household? Certainly not his wife! But she then almost has to be an older relative, possibly Jesse's mother or mother-in-law. There are no other Wootons/Wotons in Marlboro at this time. How then do these two young men come to be here, certainly not very far apart? Their age ranges are too close for them to be father and son. There seems a good chance that they may be brothers, in which case, the older lady could be their mother. If they are brothers, we luck out with rock solid evidence of whence they came. Marlboro is bounded on the northeast by North Carolina. Not adjoining Marlboro, but not very far to the northeast, is Sampson County, NC, a county chock full of Wootens between 1790 and 1840. In Sampson County Deed Book 19 page 41, is entered the following: Jesse Wooten Power of Attorney to A. Mobley "…I Jesse Wooton of the State of South Carolina Marlborough District do constitute and appoint my friend Allen Mobley of the State of North Carolina Sampson County my lawful Agent & Attorney to act for me…in…ways as he may think proper in Demanding sueing (sic) for or recovering a legacy due me from the Estate of Catherine Williams decd., either real or personal. (made) Feb. 19 1823, Registered March 5, 1823." Conclusion: Jesse Wooten of Marlboro District SC came from Sampson County NC to South Carolina. If William Woton of Marlboro and Jesse were brothers, their father must have come from NC (probably Sampson County) as early as 1800, since your William said he was born in SC around 1801. This suggests that we might check the 1790 and 1800 Censuses of Sampson County NC, to see if any Wootens present in 1790 are missing in 1800. There are four Wooten households in the Sampson 1790 Census, all on p 51 of the printed version: WILLIAM WOOTTEN SR. 3 white males over 16, 1 white male under 16, 3 white females WILLIAM WOOTTEN JR. 1 male 16 or over, 3 females THOMAS WOOTTEN, 1 male 16 or over. JESSE WOOTTEN 1 male over 16, 2 females. In the 1800 Census, there are again four Wooten households in Sampson County (Roll 32 ). Page 496 - JAMES WOOTEN, 19TH on page, with males 1 26-45, no females. Page 496 - BRITAIN WOOTEN, with males 2 under 10, 1 26-45; females 1 under 10, 1 10-16, 1 26-45. Page 499 - THOMAS WOOTEN, with males 2 under 10, 1 26-45; females 1 under 10, 1 10-16, 1 26-45. Page 517 - BRITAIN WOOTEN, with males 1 16-26, 2 26-45; females 2 16-26. Note that three of the 1790 heads are missing in 1800, the two Williams and Jesse. We can eliminate William SR because a record cited below will show him certainly to have died before 1800. This leaves only William Jr. And Jesse of Sampson as most likely to be the father of our two Marlboro SC young men of 1820. We get some further help from Sampson Deed Book 10, pp 535-536, made 15 April 1797 , between Robert, William, Jesse, Thomas, and James Wooten of the one part, and Brittain Wooten of the other part, for 22 pds, 100 acres on each side of Little Cohara (Creek) and on the head of the great swamp. This format indicates that William Sr. Has died, and that Robert, William Jr., Jesse, Thomas, and James are brothers (sons of William Sr), jointly deeding a tract of land to their younger brother (or nephew?) Brittain Wooten. Since James, Brittain, and Thomas are still in Sampson in the 1800 Census, and there is no later trace of a Robert Wooten in SC, we are still left with William Jr. and Jesse of Sampson as most feasible fathers to your William Wooten born SC around 1801. However, note that if this reasoning proves to be correct, William Wootten Sr of Sampson emerges as your 4-Great Grandfather. We are not yet 100 percent certain of the origin of the Sampson Wootens, and will leave detailed treatment of them to a possible later report. At present, I project their (and your) possible Wooten line of descent is as follows, starting with your 4-great grandfather: 1. WILLIAM WOOTTEN SR of Sampson, NC, b. Northampton or Johnson County NC around 1750, d. Sampson County around 1796; wife, Sarah, as per Sampson Deed Book 10, pp 536-537. 2. JAMES WOOTEN of Johnston County, NC, b. Isle of Wight County, VA around 1715-1720, d. probably Augusta, GA as prisoner of the British, 1780; wife of Faitha Rogers. 3. RICHARD WOOTTON II of Isle of Wight Co. VA, where born around 1675-80, died after 1730 IOW Co. VA. Wife Lucy Council. 4. RICHARD WOOTEN (WATTON) I of IOW Co. VA, b. around 1650, d. 1686 IOW, wife Joyce (Floyd?) 5. THOMAS WATTON (WOTTON), b. Castor, Northamptonshire, England, 1612, d. IOW CO VA 1669, wife Sarah Wood (widow of Arthur Wood). 6. THOMAS WATTON, b. probably Northamptonshire England around 1585, d. Castor 1648. Wife Jane Watton d. Castor, 1642. We have not yet identified the parentage of this first Thomas Watton; the only Watton recorded before him in the Castor Parish is John Watton, buried September 1588. This concludes my first report on your Wootens as reflected in our files. From Carroll County Georgia through 1860 in DeKalb AL I believe it is completely accurate, based entirely on original source records. As to their South Carolina years, much remains to be researched, but aside from locating their places of residence, the main points seem to be established. The account of their move from North Carolina to South Carolina is admittedly conjectural, but is compatible with the census and other original source records cited. Your questions or comments will be most welcome. S/Richard C. Wooton ***************************************************************** TWO WOOTEN MARRIAGE LICENSES FROM LAMAR COUNTY TEXAS Our Associate Virginia L. Ming (a genuine descendant of the first Shadrach Wooten) has sent to us originals of two Wooten marriage licenses that were given to her several months ago. Virginia says: "I thought that you might run them in the Quarterly and get the originals to some branch of the family that will rejoice to have them. Or put them in the files that you have." These are licenses for Josh Wooten and Miss Mollie Nicholson dated 17 Dec 1887, and for Chas. B. White and Miss M. Nicholson dated 17 Dec 1887, and for Chas B. White and Miss M. (or W.?) E. Wooten dated 7 Sept 1888, both in Lamar County, Texas. We have reproduced Josh Wooten's license on our front cover, and the White-Wooten license following this page. We have as yet been unable to identify the parentage of either Josh or Miss M.E. Wooten despite the copious material in our Texas files. Lamar County (seat Paris) was formed from Red River County in 1840, and the two counties are still adjoining today. For that reason, the Red River Wootens should be checked for a young male Josh in the 1880 Census. A most prominent Lamar citizen was Judge (first name) Given Wooten, superintendent of schools in Paris for over 20 years, but he did not arrive in Paris until some years after our two marriages. At any rate, we shall be glad to send the original Licenses to the first members who can PROVE close relationships to either Josh or Miss E.M. Wooten. ++++++++++++++++++++ [Note: The Notice that goes with this study was as follows: (Original format somewhat different)} WOOTEN FAMILY REUNION SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22,1988 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. NOCCALULA FALLS PARK GADSDEN KIWANIS PAVILLION #9 (Inside) BRING PICNIC LUNCH (Kitchen available for warm-ups, etc.) Lunch - 1 p.m. Bring young and old - Playground for small children Botanical Gardens and Pioneer Homestead Photographer available for family pictures from 2;00-4:00 p.m. A group picture will be taken. 8x10 color pictures can be ordered from photographer for $6.00 payable day of reunion - pictures to be mailed. 1. PART II - The Wootens of DEKALB COUNTY, AL
    2. Edward & Della
    3. Dear Friends, This is PART II of The Wootens of DeKalb County, Alabama -- a document that has been divided into three parts because of its length THE WOOTENS OF DEKALB COUNTY, AL PART II (From document prepared by Richard C. Wooton for and on behalf of Calvin Wooten of Anniston, AL -- with appreciation to Janet Walsted and to Calvin Wooten): REPORT TO CALVIN WOOTEN FROM RICHARD C. WOOTON In your letter of 26 September, you name your great grandfather as William Jasper Wooten from DeKalb County Alabama. A quick check of our files shows that we have him as a Justice of the DeKalb County Court, hearing depositions relative to Civil War pensions on 22 Feb 1868 and 28 March 1868, name given as William J. Wooten. Then on 14 Oct 1871, a Thomas A. Wootten is a witness in a similar case. These two Woottens are identified as father and son in the 1860 US Census for DeKalb County, Roll 9 pp 82-83, post office Rawlingsville, where there are three Wootten households side-by-side starting on page 82 line 31 through page 83 line 4, as follows: Line 31 WILLIAM J. WOOTEN 26, farmer 150 Born GA Jane WOOTEN 26, domestic Born SC Thomas A. " 9, GA Lorenzo L. " 5 GA William A. " 2 AL Robert K. (?)" 9/12 AL Line 37 LORENZO D. WOOTTEN 31, farmer 200-500 born SC Elisabeth " 24, domestic GA Riley H. " 6 GA John J. " 4 GA p. 83 Line 1 Mary F. " 3 AL Martha J. " 1 AL Line 3 WILLIAM J. WOOTTEN 59, mechanic 50 b. SC Susanna " 65, domestic b. SC Just a bit further on (post office Lebanon, p 85 line 22), we find a fourth household, that of FRANCIS M. WOOTEN 33, farmer 200 b. SC Mary " 26, domestic b. GA James A. " 10, b. GA Ancil F. " 9, b. GA Mary A. " 7, b. GA Josephine E. " 6, b. GA Lucinda C. " 4, b. GA John N. " 3, b. AL Nancy J. " 1, b. " The above records clearly show your great grandfather himself saying he was born in Georgia, and HIS parents saying THEY were both born in South Carolina, thereby proving the claim that he was born in Indiana to be incorrect. Also note that the birth dates and birth states show that your 2-great grandparents William and Susanna were still in South Carolina around 1827-29, when their sons Francis M. and Lorenzo D. Were born, but that they had moved to Georgia around 1834 when your 1-great grandfather William J. was born. Further, the birth dates of the younger children of William J. and Lorenzo show that they have been in Alabama less than five years in 1860, William's son Lorenzo L. age 5, being born in GA, and Lorenzo D.'s son John J. age 4 being also born in GA, while the later children are all born in Alabama. This indicates that we should find your people somewhere in Georgia in the 1850 Census, and sure enough, here they are all together in Gordon County, Roll 71, p 14, visit 64. WM WOOTEN 49 farmer b. SC Susanna " 55 SC Jeremiah " 30 farmer SC Mary A. " 25 SC Lorenzo " 23 SC Wm Jasper " 18 GA Susanna " 16 (SC ?) Ellinor S. " 10 GA The very next household, Visit 65, indicates that the eldest brother is enumerated twice in this Census: once in his father's household, and once as head of his own household: JEREMIAH WOOTEN 30 farmer SC Elizabeth " 3? SC Charles W. " 4 GA WM Taylor " 3 GA Thomas M. " 1 GA Also on page 56, visit 642 is the household of MARION WOOTEN 22 SC Mary " 20 GA James W. (A) " 1 GA This is clearly the same man shown in 1860 as Francis Marion Wootten. As Gordon County had only just been formed in 1850, we must look elsewhere in Georgia for William's household in 1840. Our files show FIVE William Wooten households in Georgia in that Census; fortunately, only one of them closely matches our William's 1850 household, in Carroll County, Role 38 p. 64: WILLIAM WOOTEN, WITH MALES 1 5-10 (Wm Jasper), 2-10-15 (Lorenzo and Francis Marion), 1 15-20, 1 20-30, and 1 30-40 (himself); females 1 5-10 (dau Susanna), 1 15-20 (Mary A.), and 1 40-50 (wife Susanna). The son Jeremiah should be one of the males between 15 and 30, since he gave his age as 30 in the 1850 Census. That is as far as we can trace your Wootten ancestry with 100 percent certainty, on the basis of my preliminary check of our files. However, your 2-great grandfather William J. SHOULD be somewhere in South Carolina in the 1830 Census. Unfortunately, the only William Wooten head of a household in SC in 1830 is already of a completely different Wooten family. It thus appears possible that your William was enumerated in some non-Wooten household, most likely that of his father-in-law, whose surname we do not yet know. If so, it may be very difficult to find him, since in the Census before 1850, only the head of the household was named. (To be concluded with PART III) submitted by Della Tenney [email protected]

    3. I am a recent subscriber to the list and would like to solicite any information on the following: Mary Wootan married Benjamin Hood about Feb. 1807. She was born about 1794 in Fairfield Co. SC. Benjamin was born abt 1792 in Orangeburg Co., SC. They had 9 children. Her father was Matthew Wootan, born about 1775 in Georgia. He died July 19, 1852 in Fairfield Co., SC. Her brother was Matthew Wootan born about 1823 in Fairfield Co. SC. I would gladly exchange information on this family. Although they're lengthy, I'll also include some of my general notes on Wootens and related families. Tom Corder [email protected] Berry R.W. Estate of James H. Wooten, Fairfiield Co. S.C. 1. PART I of 3 PARTS -- WOOTENS OF DEKALB COUNTY, AL
    2. Edward & Della
    3. Dear friends, I originally submitted this document in one part and it never saw the light of day. I believe, because of its length, it was probably exceeded the allowable size limit of the rootsweb server. Therefore, I will attempt once more to share this information with you, by dividing it into three separate submissions. THE WOOTENS OF DEKALB COUNTY AL PART I of 3 parts: FOR WOOTEN RESEARCHERS (OR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE DEKALB COUNTY ALABAMA WOOTEN LINE) (Please NOTE: This document is from a a study by Richard C. Wooton, prepared for Calvin Wooten prior to the Wooten Family Reunion held at Noccalula Falls Park, Gadsden, Alabama on Saturday, October 22, 1988. This outlines the research Richard Wooton had completed at that time regarding the DeKalb County Alabama Branch of the Wooten line and his comments regarding how he believed it connected to the Isle of Wight, VA (IOW) Wooten line. Since this study was completed, however, other research has taken place and it is safe to say as of this date we have not proven beyond any doubt our connection nor do we know for sure who the father of our William J. Wootten (b. 1801 Pickens SC) was. So we are still looking! We would like to know more about both William and Jesse Wootten who lived in Marlboro County, SC per the 1820 Census, roll 121 p. 83: WILLIAM WOTON, with males 1 16-25 (himself) and females 1 16-26 (his wife Susanna) (Richard's references). Jesse was listed also on page 83, with males, 2 under 10, 1 16-25 (himself), and females, 1 45 and over. Richard surmised this older female might have been Jesse's mother or mother-in-law. He has further suggested that since Marlboro is bounded on the northeast by NC and that Sampson County, NC was just to the northeast, and since Sampson County NC was home to numerous Wootens between 1790 and 1840, that perhaps Jesse might have moved to SC from Sampson County, NC. Fortunately, there is some evidence that this is exactly the case, as he explained: The evidence is that Jesse and William likely were brothers, since Robert, William Jr. Jesse, Thomas and James (sons of William Sr.) jointly deeded a tract of land to their younger brother or nephew, Brittain Wooten (Sampson Deed Book 10, pp 535-536 15 April 1797.) If anyone has any additional related information to this branch, we would be grateful to receive it or to have it posted here.) (The spelling variations of WOOTEN, WOOTON, WOOTTEN, WOTON, WATTON were utilized in the original documents.) (I would like to thank Janet Walsted especially for sharing this information with me and for her continuing diligent effort to find our missing link. I regret I was unable to maintain the original formatting of this document but I believe the data contained therein will come through in a readable form.) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Study of DeKalb County Wootens by Richard C. Wooton WOOTENS OF DEKALB COUNTY ALABAMA AND THEIR ORIGINS BACKGROUND (Pages originally numbered 101-108) It was over eight years ago, at the US National Archives 27 June 1980, that I first encountered records of some Woottens who moved from Georgia to DeKalb County Alabama around 1856-57. Since that time, we have found more records pertaining to these people, but as none of our members at that time claimed descent from them, we made no systematic attempt to trace their further Wootten ancestry until recently, when two of our valued Associates, Anita Wootten Herlong of Birmingham and our Past-President E.C. Wooton of Huntsville, sent us clippings of articles published by the Birmingham News and the Huntsville Times respectively. One Birmingham News article was entitled "Blind business owner Calvin Wooten plays successful sales tune," on page B-11 of the September 3 issue. The article describes how Calvin Wooten, now age 64, became a successful piano tuner, and how he has operated the Wooten Piano Company of Anniston, Alabama for over 40 years. The News reporter further that last year he had received the Ambassador Award of the American Council for the Blind, being chosen over 35,000 others throughout the nation, and that he has now been awarded the 1988 Migel medal, the highest honor given by the American Foundation for the Blind, to be presented to him 27 October 1988 in New York City. On reading the similar Huntsville article, E.C. Wooten wrote to Calvin Wooten, telling him of the work of our Association. It turned out that Calvin and his wife Winell Wooten are already deeply involved in Wooten genealogy, and have in fact organized a Wooten Reunion to take place Saturday October 22 at Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden Alabama (announcement reproduced herewith). Consequently, Calvin Wooten lost no time in joining our Association, and wrote to me giving his known Wooten ancestry as follows: "My grandfather was Barney Wooten from Rainsville, AL. His father was Dr. William Jasper Wooten (Bill) from DeKalb County, Alabama, but we understand he may have been from Indiana, born about 1830 and died August 25, 1899. They were the parents of 11 children." Upon receipt of Calvin's letter, I reviewed the records in our files pertaining to DeKalb Alabama Wootens, and prepared a report on our findings to date. We now present this report for the benefit of any readers who may be be descended from or otherwise related to this interesting Wooten family cluster.
