Martha wrote: This is the first time I have found an association of WOOTEN with Quaker genealogy (Ancestry Database): My ancestor, Edward Wootten, may have married a quaker woman. Records of early Quaker meetings on the Eastern Shore of Maryland have been lost, but George Fox, founder of Quakerism, visited very near where John Frizzell and Edward Wootten were living ca. 1670. On July 27, 1681 Edward's father John Wootten purchased from Col. William Colbourne a tract of 300 acres called Vulcan's Vineyard for 10,000 pounds of tobacco. (Som. Deed MA-06 folio 513). This tract was on the north side of Cuttomactico Creek a tributary of the Wicomico lying eastward of the Rocawauckin, near White Haven, where Fox is believed to have visited. Fox's trip is described in his writings. NB IKL, below, refers to Liber IKL of Somerset County, into which many of the 17th century records were inscribed. Oddly, my mother now lives on Beaver Dam Creek just east of Salisbury, very close to where John Frizzell lived. GENERATION 1 1. John FRIZZELL. Married Cullett. Died __ ___ 1713. Possibly a Quaker. John Frizzell was possibly a Quaker since in a deed to his son-in-law Edward Wootten he uses the date the 6th day of 9ber, 1702, a term the Quakers used instead of the pagan Latin names for the months (L#2-07 folio 706). This property called Coxes Choice was situate at the head of the Rocawauckin River on the North side of the Southeast branch of said river. This would place it east of Salisbury on what is now Beaver Dam Creek. Mary, younger sister of Sarah Fizzell, was born on October 16, 1690 (IKL 282) and they were married before 1713 when John Frizzell died. Data from Mr. John E. Jacob. Ancestry Database: Description: The First Census of the United States in 1790 comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. The total population of the United States in 1790 as derived from the schedules was 3,231,533. The only names appearing upon the schedules, however, were those of heads of families, and at the time, families averaged 6 persons, making the number approximately 540,000 or slightly more than half a million. I believe, because of its length, it was probably exceeded the allowable size limit of the rootsweb server. Therefore, I will attempt once more to share this information with you, by dividing it into three separate submissions. THE WOOTENS OF DEKALB COUNTY AL PART I of 3 parts: FOR WOOTEN RESEARCHERS (OR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE DEKALB COUNTY ALABAMA WOOTEN LINE) (Please NOTE: This document is from a a study by Richard C. Wooton, prepared for Calvin Wooten prior to the Wooten Family Reunion held at Noccalula Falls Park, Gadsden, Alabama on Saturday, October 22, 1988. This outlines the research Richard Wooton had completed at that time regarding the DeKalb County Alabama Branch of the Wooten line and his comments regarding how he believed it connected to the Isle of Wight, VA (IOW) Wooten line. Since this study was completed, however, other research has taken place and it is safe to say as of this date we have not proven beyond any doubt our connection nor do we know for sure who the father of our William J. Wootten (b. 1801 Pickens SC) was. So we are still looking! We would like to know more about both William and Jesse Wootten who lived in Marlboro County, SC per the 1820 Census, roll 121 p. 83: WILLIAM WOTON, with males 1 16-25 (himself) and females 1 16-26 (his wife Susanna) (Richard's references). Jesse was listed also on page 83, with males, 2 under 10, 1 16-25 (himself), and females, 1 45 and over. Richard surmised this older female might have been Jesse's mother or mother-in-law. He has further suggested that since Marlboro is bounded on the northeast by NC and that Sampson County, NC was just to the northeast, and since Sampson County NC was home to numerous Wootens between 1790 and 1840, that perhaps Jesse might have moved to SC from Sampson County, NC. Fortunately, there is some evidence that this is exactly the case, as he explained: The evidence is that Jesse and William likely were brothers, since Robert, William Jr. Jesse, Thomas and James (sons of William Sr.) jointly deeded a tract of land to their younger brother or nephew, Brittain Wooten (Sampson Deed Book 10, pp 535-536 15 April 1797.) If anyone has any additional related information to this branch, we would be grateful to receive it or to have it posted here.) (The spelling variations of WOOTEN, WOOTON, WOOTTEN, WOTON, WATTON were utilized in the original documents.) (I would like to thank Janet Walsted especially for sharing this information with me and for her continuing diligent effort to find our missing link. I regret I was unable to maintain the original formatting of this document but I believe the data contained therein will come through in a readable form.) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++ Study of DeKalb County Wootens by Richard C. Wooton WOOTENS OF DEKALB COUNTY ALABAMA AND THEIR ORIGINS BACKGROUND (Pages originally numbered 101-108) It was over eight years ago, at the US National Archives 27 June 1980, that I first encountered records of some Woottens who moved from Georgia to DeKalb County Alabama around 1856-57. Since that time, we have found more records pertaining to these people, but as none of our members at that time claimed descent from them, we made no systematic attempt to trace their further Wootten ancestry until recently, when two of our valued Associates, Anita Wootten Herlong of Birmingham and our Past-President E.C. Wooton of Huntsville, sent us clippings of articles published by the Birmingham News and the Huntsville Times respectively. One Birmingham News article was entitled "Blind business owner Calvin Wooten plays successful sales tune," on page B-11 of the September 3 issue. The article describes how Calvin Wooten, now age 64, became a successful piano tuner, and how he has operated the Wooten Piano Company of Anniston, Alabama for over 40 years. The News reporter further that last year he had received the Ambassador Award of the American Council for the Blind, being chosen over 35,000 others throughout the nation, and that he has now been awarded the 1988 Migel medal, the highest honor given by the American Foundation for the Blind, to be presented to him 27 October 1988 in New York City. On reading the similar Huntsville article, E.C. Wooten wrote to Calvin Wooten, telling him of the work of our Association. It turned out that Calvin and his wife Winell Wooten are already deeply involved in Wooten genealogy, and have in fact organized a Wooten Reunion to take place Saturday October 22 at Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden Alabama (announcement reproduced herewith). Consequently, Calvin Wooten lost no time in joining our Association, and wrote to me giving his known Wooten ancestry as follows: "My grandfather was Barney Wooten from Rainsville, AL. His father was Dr. William Jasper Wooten (Bill) from DeKalb County, Alabama, but we understand he may have been from Indiana, born about 1830 and died August 25, 1899. WOOTON In your letter of 26 September, you name your great grandfather as William Jasper Wooten from DeKalb County Alabama. A quick check of our files shows that we have him as a Justice of the DeKalb County Court, hearing depositions relative to Civil War pensions on 22 Feb 1868 and 28 March 1868, name given as William J. Wooten. Then on 14 Oct 1871, a Thomas A. Wootten is a witness in a similar case. These two Woottens are identified as father and son in the 1860 US Census for DeKalb County, Roll 9 pp 82-83, post office Rawlingsville, where there are three Wootten households side-by-side starting on page 82 line 31 through page 83 line 4, as follows: Line 31 WILLIAM J. " The above records clearly show your great grandfather himself saying he was born in Georgia, and HIS parents saying THEY were both born in South Carolina, thereby proving the claim that he was born in Indiana to be incorrect. Also note that the birth dates and birth states show that your 2-great grandparents William and Susanna were still in South Carolina around 1827-29, when their sons Francis M. and Lorenzo D. Were born, but that they had moved to Georgia around 1834 when your 1-great grandfather William J. was born. Further, the birth dates of the younger children of William J. and Lorenzo show that they have been in Alabama less than five years in 1860, William's son Lorenzo L. age 5, being born in GA, and Lorenzo D.'s son John J. age 4 being also born in GA, while the later children are all born in Alabama. This indicates that we should find your people somewhere in Georgia in the 1850 Census, and sure enough, here they are all together in Gordon County, Roll 71, p 14, visit 64. WM WOOTEN 49 farmer b. They were the parents of 11 children." Upon receipt of Calvin's letter, I reviewed the records in our files pertaining to DeKalb Alabama Wootens, and prepared a report on our findings to date. We now present this report for the benefit of any readers who may be be descended from or otherwise related to this interesting Wooten family cluster. I feel we're so close to breaking through to the wooten/Morris connection. Lorenzo Dow Wooten, Izard County, Arkansas, born @ 1850, had at least two daughters, one of whom was sarah jane wooten who married Wm Riley Morris, My Grandfather. Lorenzo Dow Wooten is buried, along with his wife, Martha(?) in the Bigflat cemetery , Bigflat arkansas. I have pictures of this man with his daughter, Sarah jane, for whom I'm named. He also had another daughter Elizabeth, who died the same day as her sister, October 16, 1953, however, was buried in Oklahoma. (Last name unknown, however, nowhere can I find she ever married). William Riley Morris and Sarah Jane Wooten Morris had five children: Addie, born 1892, buried also in the bigflat cemetery. She was married at least three times that I know of. Covey, was the name I knew her by. Then there was Lillie Morris Wallace, born in 1894, who's husband was always called "general" I remember seeing a commendation/land grant from the spanish-american war on Aunt Lillie's wall. Then there was William Roscoe Morris, who later changed his name to fred mason. He was born in 1896, married three times, to Amanda Curtis, Jewel Page(her sister) then to Anna Lily Page Barnett. There was Riley Hobson Morris, born in 1898(the only person in the Baxter County Bigflat, Arkansas to be buried there in 1976 with a Jewish star on his tombstone(long story and very amusing person) then Miller Morris, who came along in 1906. As you can see I don't have alot, much less any documentation ( first hand ) for proof. My source of info comes from a book "An Alverson Family History" compiled by Barbara Alverson Morris and published by James Gibson Alverson of San Gabriel, Ca. dated 1980. Barbara and her husband, Prof. Wesley Morris lived in Houston TX at the time of publishing. I have done a search on the internet for them and have not been able to locate them at this time. Also I have as a source my great aunt and grandmother on my mother's side who told me about "Maggie" Wooten being the wife of Charles A. Alverson. Barbara sites as her sources for the info on Maggie (Margeret) and Charles as Mrs. Ruth Wilson, Mrs Jon Stubbs, and Mrs. Robert Reid, 1978. Us Census Records, Death Certificates for Gus and Maggie Alverson, and Tombstones in Pelzer SC, Pelzer Cemetery. Considering your statment about being a "generation off" with our similar people, it looks to me that we aren't that far off. Margeret was born in 1875 which would make her the right age to be a sibling to the rest of your John Henry Wooten's children. However you do not have her listed. The only other possible clue I have been able to come up with is from David Wooten's web site http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/davidwooten/default/index.htm That lists a Margaret E Wooten born abt. 1875. daughter of, see below: James David Wooten and Mary Ann Brown had the following children: 472 vi. Eli Bryant Wooten was born about 1865. MARRIED 1ST COUSIN MOLLY PINSON 473 vii. Catherine Wooten was born about 1867. MARRIED SEABORN HARRELL 474 viii. Molly Wooten was born about 1872. MARRIED PRESTON PARKER 475 ix. Margaret E. Wooten was born about 1875. Hope to keep pecking away with this and get to the bottom of who her parents and grandparents are. I feel that all I would need is a generation or two and I will be able to plug into one of these well established lines. Please keep in touch! I would be very happy to share information on any of the above Wootens and allied families. I have been "stuck" on Henry Wooten for several years and I am not sure John M. Wooten was Henry's father. Any help would be appreciated. Of course, I don't know exactly who John Wooten was, but of all the John Wooten's on my data base, the John Wooten, b. ca 1777 in SC, the son of Aaron Wooten fits the profile best. If so, John & Rosannah Wooten could be two of my ancestors. Laurens Co., SC Deed Book F, pg 396. "On July 14, 1797, personally appeared Manah Barker and on oath sayeth that she was married to Lauren Barker and that several years thereafter a certain Rosannah Wooten proffessing to be a widow was marrying to Lauren Barker. Said Manah and Lauren Barker were married and it was then reported that said Rosannah's husband, John Wooten, was yet alive, which said Rosannah denied but after some time she confessed that her husband was yet alive and that she would leave the said Lauren Barker and would not live any longer with him, for if she lived and died, so she should go to Heal(sic), accordingly she went away acknowledging she was no lawful wife to said Lauren
Thanks for your input. I have been led to believe this family is not related to me, but I will check it out. I would like to find the parents of Webb Wooten or siblings. Maybe someone will have some info on this family. Thanks again Daisy Wooten Callaway Arthur P. Callaway P. O. Box 403 Bethany, LA. 71007
