Passing this info along, hopefully something for someone out there. :)
Dear Fellow Wooten Researchers: To set the record straight -- with reference to my earlier posting inquiring as to any information as to the forebears of William J. Wootten, b. 1801, m. Susannah Grant, I indicated he was born in Pickens (Walhalla) SC. It has been called to my attention that we have no authentication that this is indeed the birthplace for William J. Wootten. I do not, in fact, know where William J. Wootten was born; however, his son, Francis Marion Wootten, according to information, was born in Pickens (Walhalla) SC in 1828 (d. 14 January 1901 DeKalb County, AL) -- Sorry for the error and the confusion. For those researching the Wooten line in MS. I ran across a Thomas H. Wooten, who married Lizzie Gill, on July 23, 1911. This is in the Newton County, MS marriage records, book E, page 45. BFH
I am having a problem locating the father of William J. Wootten, b. 1801 Pickens (Walhalla) SC - m. Susannah Grant. William is where my line begins -- believe his father might have come from Sampson County, NC -- interested in information that could possibly link up William to his (probable NC) ancestors. William is the forebear of many of the Alabama (DeKalb County) Wooten line. This has been previously posted sometime ago but thought I'd try again -- mostly out of desperation. Thanks to all for all the very helpful information everyone is posting. Really appreciate this resource. DellaphineWooten Tenney

Recently, I lost information in my database and need assistance in recreating the family of PETER BOND WOOTEN. I would like to request that subscribers to the list with information on PETER BOND WOOTEN, please post information on his family and his descendants. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Greatings from the United Kingdom!! I have just completed and updated my new homepage. Please come check it out at: http://www.btinternet.com/~mark.wooton/Mark1.htm I have been watching this listserv for several months and have noticed that most of you are searching for ancestors in the South of the United States. I am searching for WOOTON's in New Jersey who decend from Staffordshire around the 1850s. Happy Hunting!! Cheers, Mark Wooton Lichfield, U.K.
In reviewing my notes this morning, I came across the following, which I do not believe I have posted previously: From: Settlers of Northeast Alabama - January 1971 - Volume IX - Fort Payne Library: WOOTEN, James Ephrem N., PO Higden, Alabama - Born January 15, 1819 in Habersham County, Georgia; first entered service as Private on February 18, 1862 (?) at Tullahoma, Tennessee in Sander's Co. Captured in 1864. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Obituary From The Fort Payne Journal, Fort Payne, AL - Wednesday March 23, 1952 JOHN WOOTEN - Funeral services for John M. Wooten, age 103, who died at the residence Saturday in Flat Rock were held Monday morning with the Rev Clarence Rogers, Rev. Harold Mills and Rev. Frank Ryan officiating. Interment was in Payne Chapel cemetery. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Francis Edwards, Flat Rock; Mrs. Pairsilin Smith, Trenton, GA; and Mrs. Sallie Bell Hays, Birmingham; three sons, Jim Wooten, Trenton, GA; Houston Wooten, Chattanooga; and Vance Wooten, Lookout Mountain, Tenn; one brother, Sam Wooten, Flat Rock. Active pallbearers were Scott Tinker, John Tinker, Brady Boatner, Bobby Lance, Hanson Rogers and Oliver Hands. Honorary pallbearers were Walter Austin, W.A. Blain, George Young, O.R. Hubele, Russell Blevins and Denver Blevins. +++++++++ From my notes: In other documents John Wooten is referred to as "Kinky" John Wooten. Della
I'm looking for Wootten families who have George William Wootten and George Stephen Wootten in them. Also George Stephen's mother was Mary Morris dau. of William Morris and Mary. Additionally, I thought I remembered seeing a Sylvester Kirkendall (or Kuykendall) on someone's web page who is on this list, but I can't for the life of me find that page again. Does the name sound familiar to anyone? My most uptodate website is: http://www.inficad.com/~markermaid Ruth Michunovich
Hello all....re-posting my home page address...please visit...thanks. Still pretty new, but hoping to add to it soon. Trying desperately to connect to the Georgia Wooten's. Beti [email protected] http://members.aol.com/bayersfine/home.html
I have just finished updating my Wooten page. It traces three generations of the descendants of William J. Wooten (born 1801 in SC) and his wife Susannah Grant (born abt. 1795 in SC). Most of these descendants lived in Northern Alabama/Northwest Georgia. It can be accessed from my main page at: http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/6661 If anyone finds a connection, please let me know! Janet
Walter, Looks like you are on the right track. I didn't have that Thomas Box Wooten was a Col. Yes, Robert D. Wooten was a confederate veteran. You may be right that Bettie Maultsby is a corruption of Elizabeth Morphis, but I'm quite sure he was married to Elizabeth Morphis. From the 1850 Cumberland Co census: Robert (age 35) Constable Elizabeth 30 wife John W. 6 Son Sabrina T. 3 Dau Mary E. 8/12 Dau Ellen Morphis 17 sister in law. I don't have anything from further census records on this family. In regards to family of James M. Wooten, most of the information we have is from two articles that appeared in the "Lenoir County Heritage Book" about his son, James Singletary Wooten Sr. (Articles 829A and 829B). In these articles it states that Josie Ann Bryan Wooten was the daughter of Joseph W. Bryan (c1820 - c 1844) and Charlotte Elizabeth Oliver Bryan (19 Jan 1824 - 21 June 1889). So I don't know where the surname Thomas comes from, unless it was a first marriage of Josie, and her marriage to James Monroe Wooten was actually her second marriage. The Bryans were from Louisburg. There is an additional daughter, Maud Bryan Wooten mentioned in the article. Still don't have proof about the marriage to Margaret McLeod. Thomas Box Wooten was single in the 1850 census, so that marriage didn't last long. Thomas does not appear in the 1860 census, so we presume he died between 1850 and 1860. Some researchers also say there was a daughter of Thomas Box Wooten's first marriage. The daughter was possibly Sarah Oliver Wooten or Sarah Jane Wooten. Belinda Hughes, who has put together that wonderful web page on the Wootens, is a descendent of Sarah Oliver Wooten. However, the birthdate that Belinda has for Sarah Oliver Wooten is 20 years AFTER her alleged mother DIED! If anyone can provide us proof of this daughter, we'd love to have it! In Richard C. Wooton's book, "John Wooten, Sr of Pitt County, NC and his sons" he states that TBW was born in Pitt Co, but our independent research shows that he was born in Dobbs County. Dear Martha: I hate to be a pain, but I'm unable to open any of the attachments. I guess it's because I operate on a Macintosh platform. I do great with cut-and-psste. Thanks -- Sharleen Johnson Rhinock Ooltewah (a suburb of Chattanooga) TN [email protected]
Dear Wooten Relatives, I have a web page thanks to my smart son-in-law! I am still adding to it of course. There are four databases listed. McCown is the one that has the most Wootens. My Grandson--Timothy's--will have the directs only. Takes a while for McCown to load as about 30,000 names in it. NO NOTES are included on purpose. That way you must contact me. Thanks.
