    3. Looking for information on my G.G.Grandfather, Abraham WOOTEN, m. Malinda JOHNSTON. All I have is his name on the death certificate of my G.Grandfather, James Hile WOOTEN, b. 2 Oct. 1863 Ohio, d. 6 Mar 1917 Alger, Hardin Co., Ohio, m. Anna Mae MASSEY. Supposedly, Abraham was born in Ohio, as that is listed on the death cert., but the informant could have been wrong, just taking a guess. Any help with this is deeply appreciated. 1. WOOTEN, Rebecca
    2. Rev. John
    3. I apologize if I am on the list wrongly, but I am trying to jump a name change in my family. My great great grandfather was A. B. Ewton (Albin Buchanan) of Dunlap, Tennessee. I was told that he was an Irishman with flaming red hair and a "matching" temper. No one has been able to prove our lineage past him. One researcher says that A. B. Ewton was really A. B. Wooten and that his mother was Rebecca Wooten. The source indicated that the name change came between 1830-1840. There is an Albert Wooten listed in Bledsoe County, Tennessee who is the right age to be A. B. Ewton. The family members listed are also the same age as his family. He is apparently also listed in the same period as A. B. or Albin Ewton in the deed books which this person has researched, but I have not seen. He is also listed in court records in 1836 as A. B. Wootson. In the 1830 census of Marion county, Tennessee there is a Rebecca Wooton listed as head of household. The family members listed are the right sex and age range to be the siblings of and A. B. Ewton. A Fannie Ewton Smith remembers a Roy Wooten telling her that her maiden name should be Wooten. His son, Roy (Buster) Wooten had a business in Jasper, Tennessee in 1988. The researcher (whose name I don't know without consulting a family member who send me copies of his work) said he visited this man in 1988 and Buster Wooten told him the Frank Ewton had told him that the family name had been Wooten. This Frank Ewton was said to be F. P. Ewton who later became the casket maker and farmer in Dunlap, Tennessee and was my great great uncle. By the way, in the 1830 census, Rebecca Wooten is listed as between ages 40 and 50 which would put her birthday between 1780-1790 (if my math is correct!) :-) This person proposes that she was born in Kentucky, but I have been unable to find census records to verify that. A Sequatchie county, Tennessee history book said that most of the residents of Sequatchie county came from North Carolina and the areas around there. Sequatchie and Dunlap are on the Georgia border near the Smokie Mountains. If any of these names is familiar to anyone, I would be deeply grateful for any information that could be shared. If I cannot establish a viable connection, I will quit the list, since I am unable to meaningfully contribute without a "real" Wooten connection. Thanks again for your time. Rev. John Ewton [email protected] Rev. John ---------- "When faced with a mountain I WILL NOT QUIT! I will keep on striving until I climb over, find a pass through, tunnel underneath--or simply stay and turn the mountain into a gold mine, with God's help! --Robert A. Schuller

    1. JOEL WOOTEN FAMILY
    2. Martha Wooten Solomon
    3. We just returned from a visit to our hometown of Douglas, GA. I was able to collect additional information on the family of JOEL WOOTEN, son of WILLIAM WOOTEN. Since 1854, Douglas has been located in Coffee Co. Prior to this date, Douglas was located in Telfair Co. We also visited relatives in Telfair Co. and I was able to purchase a book on the history of Telfair Co. [History of Telfair County Georgia 1807-1987, vol. I]. Unfortunately, when items were being submitted I was not aware of the planned publication and no one submitted info on the family of Joel Wooten, however, the book does contain info on Joel and his family within the text of relationships and marriages with other families of the area. Joel Wooten, Revolutionary soldier, is also buried in this area. If you are from Joel's family and are seeking info on specific people, I will be glad to examine the book for the desired information and send it to you. Most of the text is about the history of development in the area. We also purchased a text on the VICKERS and LOTT Families. There is some mention of the WOOTEN family, but it is minimal. However, I will be glad to look up individuals for you. WOOTEN LIST INFORMATION: Recently, I have received messages from two different people that puzzled me. In both messages the sender commented on sending info to people, who were managing the WOOTEN list for me. If you have received information that someone else was managing the list, please contact me, via personal e-mail. There has not been anyone else authorized to manage the list or use my password at Roots Web at any time. As you can understand, I am puzzled by this information. Several posts on the list have not been included in the digest format of the WOOTEN LIST. Roots Web is in the process of upgrading their systems and this may be the cause of this problem. Please feel free to post your messages again, if you are aware that they were not included in the digest format. Thanks, Martha Wooten Solomon List Host

You can find it at the State Library of NC, East Carolina University, or get it through the LDS. Maybe you can find a connection through his research. Jennifer Bell -----Original Message----- From: Peggy Loar <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Sunday, April 12, 1998 09:40 Subject: Malinda ?WOOTEN? Hello fellow researchers, Does anyone have a Malinda WOOTEN, b. 10 May 1804 d. 24 Oct 1883, who married possibly William T. HAYNES and resided in Iredell, Surry and Yadkin counties N.C.??? I am brand new to this list having just found a possible connection to the WOOTEN surname. Someone on another list told us that on old deeds, the names of witnesses in the lower left corner could be a great lead. The first name listed is supposedly a member usually of the man's family and the second was usually a member of the woman's family. This protected her interest in the property. Which brings me to WOOTEN. I just received a deed record for W. T. HAYNES, which I think is my William T. HAYNES, transferring 100 acres in Iredell N.C. to Thomas HAYNES in 1840. It is witnessed by a Thomas HAYNES and Thomas WOOTEN. I have my ggg-grand parents William T. and Malinda HAYNES on census records for Iredell, Surry and Yadkin counties N.C. in the years 1840 thru 1870. Malinda would have been born 10 May 1804 according to her cemetery marker in Sandy Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Iredell county. William T. died in 1880 and Malinda died in 1883. Any help would be greatly appreciated Peggy Haynes Loar [email protected]

    3. Hi all! I got this sent to me from someone who is working with me on one of my other lines. I thought I might post it here since it does not help me, but may help some of you. Cheers, Mark Wooton Lichfield, UK http://www.btinternet.com/~mark.wooton/Mark1.htm Found this surfing, is this yours? http://www.flash.net/~kbourne/white_lw.txt Mrs. Lilly Wooton White Goose Creek, Ky., June l0, 1898. The Wootons are of English origin. The brothers came from England in the very early part of the 18th century and settled in North Carolina and bought 1800 acres of land but they afterwards removed to Wilkes Co., Georgia. The sons of one or both of these men were: Richard, Thomas, James and Lemuel (Samuel?). I have no account of what became of the latter two. They married Smiths. Richard, my great grandfather was a commissioned officer in the Revolutionary War. I was born in Ringold, Georgia, near Chickmauga Battle Ground. In a correspondence with Mrs. L. Scifert of New York City, I have learned that Lord Wooton of England was in the Peerage, that she was fourth in descent of him. She said there was a fortune of $100,000,000 to be distributed now, and she was tracing the Wootons. The residence of George W. Childs of Philadelphia was called by Lewis Wooton. I would like to know who (I am). I am assured that Col. Wooton of Revolutionary fame was wealthy and influential. My mother was a Wells, her mother a Caldwell of South Carolina, a relative of John C. Calhoun. My mother was at John C. Calhoun's funeral. ---------------------------------------------------------------- started here to find theabove article; http://www.flash.net/~kbourne/dickey.html

    2. F HALE
    3. Hi - This is in response to the enquiry by Victor Crawford, Jr. on John T. Wooten. I have had the marriage & census data on John T. Wooten for several years but I have no definite proof of his parents. I think he is most likely the son of John M. Wooten, b ca 1755, NC, d. ca 1820, Oglethorpe Co., GA and Betsy Anderson, d. ca 1860, GA. They were married 30 Aug 1796 in Oglethorpe Co., GA. John M. Wooten was in the 1800 census of Oglethorpe Co., GA with his brother Thomas Wooten. They had at least one son, Henry A. Wooten, b. 1804, d. before 1870 in Dahlonega, Lumpkin Co., GA. My line from Henry is James Madison Wooten, b. 1836 GA, d. 1865 (POW) John Anderson Wooten, b. 1859. d. 1928, GA Augustus Anderson Wooten. b. 1882, GA d. 1969, Ga Bonnie L. Wooten, b. 1911, GA d. 1993, GA Please note the name Augustus - I have not run across this name for any other Wootens until your message that said John T. Wooten may have had a son Augustus. Please email the data you have on John T. Wooten and his children, especially dates & places of birth. We may have a connection in that John T. and Henry A. Wooten may have been brothers. Thanks, Forrest Hale

    2. SHERRY OWENS
    3. I'm new to the list and hope to find someone with information on Ann WOOTEN, b ca 1754 NC married Lewis PIERCE (b ca 1755, prbly NC) abt 1783, prbly in NC. Their son, my ancestor, Jeremiah PIERCE, was b ca 1783 NC and married Nancy MCLAIN 20 Nov 1805 in Oglethorpe Co, GA. Lewis and his family removed to GA by 1789, when Lewis appears on the Wilkes Co Militia Roster. Children born in GA: Ann (Nancy), b ca 1792 (md Joseph BRIDGES), Rebecca, b ca 1798 (md Daniel MALONE), and probably Lewis P., b ca 1795, apparently died before 1850. Lewis and Ann may have had other children that I am unaware of at this time. Lewis and his family moved to Covington Co, MS by 1820. Lewis PIERCE died 1833, Ann WOOTEN Pierce died July, 1853, both in Covington Co. Jeremiah PIERCE moved his family to Mobile Co, AL. Daniel and Rebecca PIERCE MALONE were on the 1850 Lawrence Co, MS census. Joseph and Nancy PIERCE BRIDGES were on the 1850 Covington Co, MS census. Much of my information comes from the pension application of Joseph BRIDGES on Lewis PIERCE's Revolutionary service. I have not been successful in finding Ann WOOTEN PIERCE's parents and would love to hear from anyone with information that may help me place her with the proper family. Thanks, Sherry Owens [email protected]

    1. John T. WOOTEN & Mary WILSON, Henry Co. GA
    2. Victor Crawford, Jr.
    3. Hi all, While researching my John T, Wooten, I have found that his first wife was Mary Wilson. They were married in Henry Co., GA July 6, 1828. I believe she was born in Miss. circa 1812 and died on May 15, 1845 and was buried in Rose Hill Cem., Macon. He lived there, owned property, etc. until before 1840 when He moved to Macon, GA. He is listed on the 1830 census for Henry Co. The only other Wooten on that census is a THOMAS WHOOTEN Does this ring any bells, I am sure that they have several children, possible a Wilson W., and a John T. Jr, and Augustus
