    1. Deposition of Jane Wootten - October 31, 1900
    2. Della Tenney
    3. (Following is a copy of the Deposition of Jane Wootten which was taken in connection with a pension application. It is handwritten and I have done my best to transcribe it as written -- for information): "DEPOSITION Case of Jane Wootten, No. 706,459 On this 31st day of October 1900 at Chavies, County of DeKalb, State of Alabama Before me, N. Smith, a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Jane Wootten, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: I was married at the home of Nancy Powell. She and her husband Mariner Powell (dec'd) and Bird Cannon who went to Texas whereabouts unknown, were the only persons present outside of the contracting parties and Jim Russell who performed the ceremony. Nancy Powell is the only living witness to our marriage. Bird Cannon must be dead as he was an old man then. In regard to the land, I own only the widow's interest. When I married my mother was dead and my father was married again and I was living with my brother Cyrus Powell (dead). Cyrus did not want me to marry and this is why I was married at Jane (struck through) Nancy Powell's whose husband was a cousin of mine. The soldier died and I had eleven children. We have now living seventy-one grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The rebal (sp) home guards came to our house and arrested the soldier and put him in chains. They first chained him to Milligan Fancett who died in service. They kept the soldier and Fancett chained together at my house with a guard on them for two days until they gathered up some more men. Then when ready to take them away they separated my husband and Fancett and chained him to old man Musgrove and carried them off that way -- To the best of my recollection they carried him off on Friday and he returned home on the following Sunday and at once made his way to the Union lines across the Tenn river in Jackson County, where I joined him and from there we made our way together until we crossed the Ohio river to Indiana. My answers are correctly recorded. (X) Jane Wootten Witness J.J. Wooten (Another witness signature, undecipherable) Sworn to and subscribed before me this 31st day of Oct, 1900, and I certify that the contents were fully made known to deponent before signing. /s/ N. C. Smith Special Examiner" (Reproduced at National Archives)"

    1. Wootton family in London
    2. Mohr One-Name Study
    3. Hi all, Since we've had more subscribers to the list, I'd like to repost the info about my Woottons in Southwark & Bermondsey (London), Surrey, England. Hope someone out there might know something! I'm researching this family who appeared on the 1861 Census for London, England (Southwark, Surrey): John WOOTTON, husband, age 44, woodcutter employing 2 men & 2 boys, born Bermondsey, Surrey, England. Harriett WOOTTON, wife, age 45, born Southwark, Surrey. John B. WOOTTON, son, unmarried, age 20, woodcutter, born Southwark, Surrey. William WOOTTON, son, unmarried, age 16, woodcutter, born Southwark, Surrey. Thomas WOOTTON, son, unmarried, age 10, scholar, born Southwark, Surrey. William WRIGHT, visitor, unmarried, age 23, chemist & druggist, born Bermondsey, Surrey. They lived at 21 King's Bench Walk. William WOOTTON (age 16) is my gg-grandfather. He married Mary Ann WRIGHT (d/o Thomas WRIGHT of Cheshire, ENG and Ann OWEN of Gyffin (sp?), Caernarvon, North Wales) who was born in Dwygyfylchi, Caernarvon, North Wales. After his death, Mary Ann married a man named LAW, brother of Andrew Bonar LAW of parliament. The two young sons of Mary Ann and William WOOTTON were sent to live with friends/relatives by the name of YEO in Ontario, Canada. John and Harriet WOOTTON are my ggg-grandparents. We believe Mary Ann was married to a MAYERSBACH before her marriage to William WOOTTON. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me. Thank you for your time. Best wishes, Karen Mohr [email protected] http://www.buffnet.net/~mohr/allied.html

    1. HENRY WOOTEN
    2. Martha - following are the facts on my HENRY WOOTEN. (Note: You researched your data about 8 months ago but maybe there is something new) I would appreciate any info , no matter how small, from anyone. I have been searching for Henry's parents for about 20 years. HENRY A(?) WOOTEN, B 1804 SC, died after 1870, Fulton Co., GA married ca 1830, MARTHA ANDERSON b. ca 1814, SC, died after 1870, Fulton Co., GA Children: JOHN ANDESON WOOTEN, b. ca 1832, died ca 1900, Lumpkin Co., GA. married MARY A. ANDERSON, ca 1858 JAMES MADISON WOOTEN, b. ca 1836, died 14 June 1865, Camp Douglas, IL(POW) married MARY ELIZABETH FITTS, 25 July 1858, Lumpkin Co., GA MARY ANN WOOTEN, b. ca 1836, died ca 1900 WILLIAM JASPER WOOTEN, b, ca 1839, died before 1908, Lumpkin Co., GA married SALLIE MERCK, 12 Oct 1863, Lumpkin Co., GA FRANCIS M. WOOTEN, b ca 1842, Lumpkin Co., GA, died 4 Dec 1862, Vicksburg, MS LAUZA J. WOOTEN, b ca 1846, died before 1850, Lumpkin Co., GA ELIZ MARTHA WOOTEN. b. ca 1849, Lumpkin Co., GA. HENRY WOOTEN has not been found in the 1820 or 1830 censuses of GA, SC, NC, or TN. There was a HENRY WOOTEN in the 1820 census of Pitts Co., NC but no information shown and another HENRY in Williamson Co. TN, age 26-45. My HENRY WOOTEN also has not been found as a successful drawer in the land lotteries of GA. HENRY WOOTEN first shows up in the 1838 GA State Census of Lumpkin Co., There were 5 people in HENRY's household, 1 male 6-10, no other infor shown. Other WOOTENS in county were WILLIAM WOOTEN, with 10 persons, and ANN WOOTEN with 4 persons. HENRY is in the 1850 census of Lumpkin Co., HENRY was 46, b. SC, NC, or GA. (Entry was apparently originally GA but overwritten with NC or SC) MARTHA age, 36, b. SC. All six children were listed. HENRY's occupation was carpenter. HENRY and his sons were in the 1860 Census of Lumpkin Co. After the war in 1870, only HENRY's son, JOHN ANDERSON WOOTEN, and his widowed daughter-in-law, MARY ELIZABETH FITTS WOOTEN were in Lumpkin Co. The 1870 Census shows HENRY age 64(?), b. SC, MARTHA, age 55, b. SC in Fulton Co., GA (West(1-WD)). Others in household, W.G. female, age 10, Igemiah(almost unreadable) female, age 17, b. GA and JOHN,age 11, b. GA. JOHN was my greatgrandfather, the orphan of JAMES MADISON WOOTEN, so the 2 females are most likely other grandchildren. HENRY was a carpenter with real estate valued at $100.00. A review of Franklin Garrett's death rolls failed to reveal anything on HENRY. Correspondence with Franklin several years ago failed to reveal anything except that HENRY owned a small tract of land on Bankhead Highway. Circumstantial evidence points to JOHN M. WOOTEN and BETSY ANDERSON as the parents of HENRY but it is not enough to make a call. JOHN M. married BETSY ANDERSON 30 August 1796, Oglethorpe Co., GA. In the census of 1850. HENRY was shown as HENRY A. WOOTEN, the A. never to be found again. Could this have been A. for ANDERSON? The middle name of Anderson has followed my WOOTENS through the current generation. BETSY ANDERSON could have been the daughter of WILLIAM ANDERSON, who died in 1800 in Edgefield Co., SC. He namen a daughter ELIZABETH (BETSY?) but did not add a married name if ELIZABETH were married. WILLIAM ANDERSON's will describes his home plantation as sitting on the river so you "can see Georgia". This could explain the confusion on HENRY's birth state if ELIZABETH ANDERSON was his mother and she went home to give birth. This is very long but I wanted to give all the facts I have. Thanks in advance - Forrest
