    1. HELP! -Pickens Co., SC Wootens
    2. Fellow ancestor detectives. After several years of searching for the birth place of my ggggrandfather, Henry Wooten, I have finally found a valuable clue. In my research in Lumpkin & Habersham (see related posting to Wooten-L this date), I found the following documents in Deed Book B, that were not included in the index. For some reason I decided not to trust the index prepared by the clerk(s) and looked at every page of the deed books just trying to pick up familiar names. On the very last page of Book B, Henry's name leaped from the page. Needless to say, I looked at every page of the other deed books but never found another Wooten deed that was not indexed. 3 March 1835, Lumpkin Co., GA Deed Book B, pg 332/3) I, Henry Wooten, of Lumpkin Co do appoint John Reece (or Rice) of Union Co., GA my lawful attorney to do and transact business for me in the selling of a parcel of land lying and being in the State of South Carolina and Pickens District containing 140 acres more or less and to make Title in the said possession in my cause, given under my hand and seal this 3rd day of March 1835. Wit: John F. Field, E.P. Hale, J.P. Recorded 7 March 1835 (Henry signed with an X) Following on the same page, but dated 2 March 1832, Robert Reece (or Rice) gave John Reece power of attorney to sale 1,047 acres in Pickens District, SC. Robert also signed with an X. I would sincerely appreciate any information on any Wootens in Pickens District from about 1780 through 1840 as well as any info on John & Robert Reece. Forrest Hale

    1. Wooten - Habersham & Lumpkin Cos. GA
    2. Hi Wooten Researchers- I was able to spend some time in the court houses of Lumpkin & Habersham counties. GA, last week. The following may be old to some of you but helpful to others. Lumpkin Co (organized 1832) 7 March 1837, Deed Book D.pg 455 James N. Wootten to William Wootten, for $50.00, a lot in the 15th District of the Cherokee District, now Lumpkin Cty, No. #424, 40 acres. Wit: D. Killiam J.S. Chastain, J.P. 16 Nov 1840, Deed Book F, pg 314 William Wootten to Alsey B. Barker, for $50.00,1/2 of the tract of land (Tract 424) in the 15th District, 40 acres Wit: M.P. Quillian Wm. Martin, J.P. 18 Nov 1843, Deed Book H, pg 302 William Woottan to William W. Woottan, for $100.00, 40 acres in the 11th Dist, 1st Section, known by numbers 1262 and 1259, except for the gold and minerals of all kinds. Wit: M.P. Quillian E.P. Hale, J.P. Recorded 22 March 1844 5 Jan 1848, Deed Book J, pg 427 William Wooten to Joseph Martin, for $40.00, No # 1260, 40 acres. Wit: Hiram L. Hinson Obediah Truitt, J.P. Recorded 5 April 1849 23 Feb 1846 William Wooten of Cherokee Co., GA. to Madison Grizzle of Lumpkin Co., GA. for $60.00,Lot 1072, consisting of 40 acres. Wit: William W. Wooten James C. Coffee, J.P. Note: The above deed was re-recorded in Deed Book U, page 404 in Jan 1881. The recording of the deed was exactly as in 1846 except the name of Madison Grizzle was changed to Andrew J. Grizzle. There were no notes or cross- referencing of the deeds but I assume Andrew was an heir of Madison Grizzle. 1 Dec 1858, Deed Book O, pg 188 William W. Wooten to William K. McAllister, for $425.00, 11th Dist, 1st Section, Lots 1215 and 1216, except for 1/2 of all mineral interest. (no acreage shown) Wit: I.L. Eadey 19 July 1864, Deed Book Q., pgs 159 & 160 Mary and John A. Wooten to Mrs. Boyd, for $120.00, a town lot and building, lately unoccupied, joining said Mrs. Boyd on the South and West of a lot owned by J.H. Mosley, in Dahlonega, 1/4 acre. Requested by husband, John A. Wooten who is now in the military service. signed: Mary Wooten Wit: Adaline Parker The next entry on page 160 is dated 24 Aug 1866 where John A. Wooten affirmed by his signature that he had given his wife Mary permission to sell their town house. HABERSHAM CO., GA (origanized 1832) 2 March 1822, Deed Book B, pg 17 Joe Ball to William Wootten, for $100.00. 250 acres in Habersham Co., GA. (Note: Description of land and witnesses unreadable due to water damage) 3 Feb 1823, Deed Book B, pg 90. Ferdinand Davidson to John Wooten. (water damage) 25 Oct 1844, Deed Book R, pg 127 J.T. Cole to Aaron Wooten, for $100.00, Land Lot 96, 10th Dist, 250 acres. Wit: Wm. Harris. recorded 28 Aug 1845 The following land conveyances were in the Grantor/Grantee Deed Index but the deed books were so water damaged that nothing could be extracted. The index does give the date so it may be of some use. 5 Feb 1827, John Wooten to William Shefffield, Book G, pg 44 27 Oct 1835 , John Wooten to John McFarbin, Book M, pg 453 15 Oct 1836, J.W. Wooten (atty) to Wm. Lackey, Book O, pg 64 Clerks at both counties told me that there were no will books or books on administration of estates. (And I have never found any microfilm on such books at the Ga State Archives) I researched the Superior Court minutes of both counties but found nothing pertaining to the Wootens. I hope the above helps someone. Forrest

    3. We have just started a new page on our web site: "WOOTEN BURIAL SITES". This page is set up to list any and all known Wooten Burial Sites. These Wootens do not need to be related to each other. Hopefully through this page we can find some of our lost Wooten ancestors. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/7241/index.html All submissions are welcome on this page! If you have any Wooten burial information please post it to the Wooten Mailing List with "Cemetery" listed in the subject line. Eventually I will have a submittal form on the page for additional submittals, but until then, e:mail will work fine. By submitting through the Wooten Mailing lists you'll also be making this info available immediately to the other researchers. thank you belinda melton hughes -- BJ's Genealogy Site http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/7241/index.html Child Support Central http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/Garden/2342/

    3. Dear Belinda and other Wooten researchers: <James Shadrach Wooten 1816/1861> <Martha J. Hardy 1825/1902> <Their children:> <John Sutton Wooten (1856/1947)> <Martha F. Wooten (1859/****) m.Sansing> <Rosa Wooten (****/****) m.Aycock> When I saw the name Sutton in your query regarding MS, I started thinking. I’ve done a great deal of research on MS for my Durley/ Tarkington lines. There are numerous reels of microfilm held in the permanent file at the LDS/FHC. I’ll scan them when I have some free time. The Hardy surname was quite often listed in connection with my other ancestors. I found a Sutton Hardy, as well as a Hardy Sutton, who could be the same person. In fact, the man mortgaged every slave he had to start a bank c1830*40. He was also in a slightly shady land deal under cover of the New York & Mississippi Land Company. He bought many hundreds of acres of land from the Chickasaw Indians for a penny an acre and resold it for a huge profit. I’m always going off on these wild-goose-chases. There were no early Hardy wills probated according to my Mississippi Index of Wills covering 1800/1900. <A.H.1883/John H. 1873/ Mumford 1891> Betty Wiltshire, who compiled the book, noted that it was often the practice in Mississippi to file the will in the state and county of the heir instead of the testator. Weird, huh? Just a guess, but I’ll bet the parents of Martha J.Hardy were from NoCar. Here are the results of my search of Johnston County NC. I was disappointed because the films only yielded one bona fide find--Jesse Wooten’s 1812 will. If anyone would like a photocopy of this LW&T, I have it. It's short and to the point. 3. Reuben Wooten was my gggrandfather, I know he had siblings; John, Martha J., and Jacob. I have seen Reuben's father's name as Spatswell, Spotsid, Spalsed, and Spotwell. Spotswell's wife's name was Patre, I do not know her Maiden name. They lived in Russell County Ky. in 1860. I have very little additional information on Spotswell and Patre. This line does seem to be difficult to research. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rick

    1. Roots Web: Blocking Attachments and HTML
    2. Martha Wooten Solomon
    3. The following is an announcement from Roots Web: Hi, folks -- Well, it took almost two months longer than expected, but we're right now installing a SmartList hack that blocks file attachments (including VCARDS), HTML messages and enriched text postings. Sorry about the delay: things have been crazy around here. This note is to let you know how it works. When a poster sends something to a mailing list written in HTML, or with a non-plain-text attached file, the list server will send the poster's message back to them, with a note at the bottom explaining the plain-text requirement at RootsWeb. A COPY OF THIS REJECTION MESSAGE WILL BE SENT TO YOU [list owner] AS WELL! That's because the poster may write back to you to complain or to ask for help, and it can be pretty confusing if they write a reply to a message that you never saw. This change is not currently something the listowner can turn on and off. Attachments will be blocked from every list alike. This might not be to the taste of some listowners, so we'll consider closely whether it would be safe to make it an optional setting. Thanks to Marc Nozell for finding the SmartList patch that was used as the basis for this fix! Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative volunteer sysadmin and general hacker

"I am looking for any information my great grandfather John Wooten b 1843-44 in Clinton County Ky. I know that he had siblings, Jacob, Ruben, Nancy, and Sarah. I believe his father was Spotwell Wooten, and I do not know his mother's name. I believe her to be a Native American. This line has been hard for me to find any information on. I know that he was in the Civil War and where he lived most of his married life (Iowa). I would appreciate any information you may have on this line. Thanks, Connie" Thanks, Martha Wooten Solomon

    1. WOOTEN Family - Craven/Lenoir NC
    2. Hi There! I am working on my wife's family tree. Her Great Grandmother's name was Olivia WOOTEN, we think. There was some question as to whether it was WOOTEN or HOOTEN, but I have pretty much determined it was WOOTEN. Anyhow, Olivia WOOTEN (Born: August 1877 Died: March 14, 1907 in New Bern, Craven County, NC) was married to a Clifton Franklin DuPREE (Born: July 4, 1875 in New Bern, NC Died: April 14, 1962 in Vanceboro, Craven County, NC) down in the Craven/Lenoir County area. I was hoping that somebody might have some insight as to who her family is and where she came from. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You! Bryan L. Curtis Greensboro, NC [email protected]

    3. Hi, I extracted the following from a message that appeared earlier on the list. I am particularly interested in Moses Wootan because of the Illinois connection. My wife's ancestry traces back to James A. (Mes) Wooton (b. ca 1832) who is recorded as being born in Illinois but who moved to Texas. As Moses was already in Texas at the time of James' birth, he is more likely to be James' grandfather than father. Does anyone have any information on the family of Moses Wootan that remained in Illinois when he moved to Tennessee and then to Texas? Thanks for all assistance. Conrad >> THIRD GENERATION >> >> 6. Lewis , his wife, and 11 children are shown without any dates or places in any of the 13 GEDCOM records. Thanks Again Forrest Hale
