    1. WOOTENS - Pendleton Dist SC 1787 - 1860
    2. I researched records in the county offices of Pickens and Anderson Co., SC and the Greenville County Library last week and following is what I found. Some of it may old to you but Ihope it helps someone. Pendleton Dist Probate Records, Wills, Estates 1787 - 1860 (Includes Pickens & Andeson Counties. ZILLAH WOOTEN Named as daughter Benjamin Armstrong in Benjamin Armstrong's LW&T, dated 19 Oct 1831. Proven 13 Dec 1832. Benjamin also directs in his will that his grandson BENJAMIN CORNELIUS WOOTEN, son of ZILLAH & JOHN WOOTEN, two years schooling "at a plain respectable country school". (Ref:Pickens Co Estate records, box 3, packet 35) NOTE: John E. & Zillah WOOTEN were in Henry County, GA in 1845 (see deed record below) and are listed in the 1850 census of Habersham Co., GA. BENJAMIN CORNELIUS WOOTEN m. CHARLOTTE ?. On 24 Aug 1861, he enlisted in Hall Co., GA in the 24th Ga Voluneer Infantry. He died 18 June 1862 in Farmville, VA. No other Wootens shown in estate records. LAND RECORDS: I feel an explanation of land records in this part of SC is necessary. Again, it may be old to some of you but may help others. Until 1784, all land in the Pendleton District belonged to the state. In 1784, the governemnt passed a statue detailing how this land was to be sold to the public. Individuals had surveys made and then sent them to Columbia with a small fee and a land grant was made. None of these grants were recorded in District or County Land offices. The State Archives in Columbia has copies of these grants & plats and they are on microfilm at the Greenville County Library. >From 1784 until 1826, land transactions on land granted individuals, who then sold it, were recorded in the Pendleton District Court. In 1826, Pendleton District was divided into two Districts, Anderson and Pickens. (now counties) All of the land transactions in the Pickens District, prior to 1826, went to the Anderson District. All land transactions in Pickens District after 1826 are in the Pickens Co. court. 2. James Garrett
    3. I have studied the 6/25/98 message from Sharleen that covered the results of her search of Johnston County, NC records (Wooten). This has been the only message, besides those sent by myself, that mentioned my gg-grandmother Sarah Wooten. The particular references that I am interested in are as follows: 1809 Wm. md. Winifred O'Neal 1812 LW&T Jesse Wooten Children of Jesse Wooten & May Berry: 1. Jesse Jr (not named in father's will) 2. William 3. Sherrod 4. Berry 5. Mary (not named in father's will) 1825 Sarah md. Dan'l. Whitley The last entry in 1825 is the marriage of my gg-grandparents, Daniel R. Whitley b. 1802 in Johnston Co, NC to Sarah Wooten b. 1810 in Johnston Co, NC. I strongly suspect that one of the males mentioned in the 1809 or 1812 entries is the father of Sarah Wooten; I just cannot prove it. Does anyone have any other information on these people that may help me to find a link to Sarah's parents? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! James C. 1. Thomas A. Wooten
    2. I hope someone can help me. Information given to me says that a Thomas A. Wooten, born in VA in 1808 married a Jane Castle born in Kentucky in 1813. They were married in Lawrence County, Kentucky on 1 August 1827. Have confirmation of the marriage, but need additional information on Thomas and Jane. I believe that it's possible that Thomas was Thomas Alfred Wooten and may possibly have been a minister. I also believe it's possible that Jane is actually Sarah Jane Castle. If anyone has any info, clues, thoughts, etcetera, I'd deeply appreciate hearing! Thanks! Donna

    1. Poisoning of Mrs. Wooten (Savannah Courier)
    2. I found this sad but interesting story on the web and thought I'd pass it on. It comes from the Savannah Courier which was published in Savannah, Tennessee in Hardin County. "Jackson was the scene of the enforcement of the lynch law on the night of Aug 18th. Eliza Wood, a negro woman the victim. She was accused of poisoning, with Rough on Rats, Mrs. Wooten, for whom she was cooking, the previous week. An analysis of the stomach of Mrs. Wooten showed arsenic in sufficient quantity to produce death. When this fact became known a mob was organized who took the woman from the jail and hung her to a tree in the courthouse yard, stripped her of all clothing, fired shots into her body and left her hanging. It is generally believed that she had poisoned several other persons." "Nov 23, 1886 - Jesse Wooten, whose wife was poisoned by a negro woman at Jackson last summer, has been pronounced insane and carried to the asylum in Nashville." Hope you find it interesting. Donna

    3. I am looking for any information on Connie Standley Dickerson Wooten who married J.H. Wooten in Franklin County, Arkansas on May 10, 1911. J. H. Wooten was born about 1859. Connie was born 1891 in MO & moved to AR with her parents when young. Connie was first married to Gerome Dickerson in 1909. She accidently shot him and he died shortly thereafter. J. H. and Connie had 2 sons (don't know their names). She evidently died very young after 1916. I don't know where J. H. was born or his parents information. I was told that J. H. may have been a preacher. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Jean Paneitz [email protected]

    1. Civil War Medals - Wooton, George C.
    2. Hello everyone, THis URL was in one of my Emails. I looked and found this. If you can prove you are a descendant, you can claim the medal. Joan Wooten Wooton, George C.; K; 1st Reg Vet Inf Vols LIST OF UNCLAIMED UNION CIVIL WAR MEDALS M-Z AT THE WEST VIRGINIA STATE ARCHIVES In order to claim an ancestor's medal, a claimant must submit his or her line of descent from the veteran along with documentation to support this line of descent. To establish line of descent, claimants must include copies of primary sources, including birth, death, marriage, will, deed, military, census, Bible records, etc. Old letters, diaries, marriage announcements, or obituaries may also prove helpful in verifying a descendant's claim. Please note that a family chart submitted without further documentation is not sufficient.
