    2. Sharleen Rhinock
    3. Hi all: I'd like to make a small suggestion here. When people post queries such as: >Does anyone know the names of the brothers and sisters of Richens Lacy >"Uncle Dick" Wooten/Wootton?> It would certainly be helpful for anyone trying to answer to give a time reference (i.e. 1700 or 1900), as well as a geographic reference (i.e. Florida or Wisconsin). Just a thought to make things easier. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Sharleen Johnson Rhinock, Ooltewah, TN SHOW ME YOUR HEART, ebook now available from Treble Heart Books THRILLWIND, historical mystery, coming soon from RFI-West ANGEL ON THE MOUNTAIN, coming soon from Atlantic Bridge STORMY NIGHTS, coming soon from Wings Press WHISPERS IN THE MIST, paperback now available from website MY WEBSITE: http://www.geocities.com/sharleenjohnson/index.html

    3. I have received a great deal of help from Jerry in Denver whose wife descended from my Silas P. Wooten. Her earlier ancestors were: Silas Penix Wooton and Phebe Worth Levi Wooton (later changed to Ooton) and Alpha Omega Tailor Nancy Ann Ooton and John Johnson ........ So here is a documented case of a name being changed by one son while other sons continued to go by the original name. Levi moved out of Ky as I recall--to Illinois. So perhaps his change of name was because of his change in location. I also remember something that I received from Michael Wooten and Carl Wooten one weekend--are you out there Michael to verify if you are the one who told me this or Carl?--that Silas and his son Levi had a falling out that probably led to Levi's leaving Ky. Perhaps his anger with his father led him to the name change? The story that was told indicated that Phoebe left with Levi and also moved to Illinois....but I have never double checked this information. Carl and Michael gave me some other stories that weekend as well that I have not gotten around to trying to verifying. Perhaps I can do some work on that this spring. I do not descend from Levi. I descend Silas>Thomas Alfred>Silas>Sarah Jane. All of my line continued to go by Wooten. Perhaps the original Silas pronounced it differently than we do now? Making the spellings both seem correct? Interesting! Marsha in WV Al Wootten wrote: .... > > Gale sent a note to Lower-Delmarva Roots with a question on Wooten and Outen > in Georgia. 1. Outens and Wootens
    2. Glenda Inabinet
    3. I know that the Wootens of Fairfield County, SC were listed on the cencus several times as Outens and one time as Ortens another time they were Woolens because someone forgot to cross the t. I thought I would never find them because of these spellings. but I went through the entire cencus and they were there from 1790 to 1900. Aaron, John, Matthew, Daniel, Moses, from grandfathers to sons. The only question I have had on this Wooten/Outens is was the original spelling of these Wootens or Wootan and I know that in 1778 Daniel signed his name as Daniel Wootan and it was easy to read when he recieved payment for Rev. service. Today the name is spelled Wooten but as long as they are my ancestors that too is OK. Glenda

On pg. 225 & 226 respectively are listed Moses Outen and Aaron Outen. The Little River Baptist Church Minutes, also posted at this website, mention Moses Wooten (abt 1802) and Aaron Wooten (1805). There are no WOOTEN's listed on the 1800 census and there are no OUTEN's listed in the church record. The 1810 census index lists these same OUTEN's but no WOOTEN'S. To me, though I have not looked further afield, these look like the same people. Gale

    1. Major John Wooten, Killed 1 May 1794, GA
    2. Forrest D. Hale
    3. Looking for info on Major John Wooten. "On May 1, 1794, Capt McKenzie of Lt Col Runnels Hancock Co., GA regiment held muster at Ft Wilkenson to draft men for frontier service. As it happened, the muster ground was only two miles from Ft Wilkenson and about 25 of the Federal troops at the fort came over to the muster ground to watch the activity.A fight broke out in which a Federal soldier struck Major John Wooten in the head killing him" Ref: History of GA Militia 1783-1861, Vol i, page 88. The same information is shown in the Historical Collections, Joseph Habersham Chapter DAR, VOL i, pages 6 & 7 except that this reference also shows that Major John Wooten was married to Mary Sims. I believe this Major John Wooten is the John Wooten, born 1735, Orange Co., VA son of Daniel Wooten. John moved to Cumberland Co., NC about 1755; then to Fairfield District SC about 1770; then to Hancock Co., GA about 1793/1794. John's son HARDY, also went to Hancock Co in 1794 where he became a Federal Spy against the Indians for Col Runnels and Col Elijah Clarke. Mary Wooten and James Cathell were appointed administrators of John Wooten's estate in Hancock Co on 16 Sept 1794. I would appreciate any information on John Wooten, especially any document that shows he was a Major in the Hancock Co., GA militia in 1794. Forrest Hale fdhale@mindspring.com
