    3. The following pages from the Wooten and Related Families Association (WARFA) may be of help to some researchers. (Scanned 26 March 2002 by Forrest D. Hale, Sr. from WARFA Volume VIII, No 4, December 1988; by Richard C. Wooton) THE WOOTEN ANCESTRY OF JAMES IAURENCE WOOTEN OF GREENE COIJNI'Y GEORGIA by Richard C. Wooton, with major contributions by Nina Sadler Bell and Harold W. Jones Among the early Charter members of our Association is Nina Sadler Bell, of Miami Florida, who first wrote to us in February 1981, asking our help in finding the Wooten ancestors of her husband Edgar E. Bell. According to family records, Edgar's mother Lillian Bond Wooten was born Memphis 23 Dec1891, and married William Carroll Scott Bell 6 Aug 1914 at Memphis. Lillian's parents were Lucius Edgar Wooten, born 24 July 1860 Brunswick Tennessee, and Lillian Theresa Beaty, born 22 Apr 1863 in Shelby County 'TN, married 9 Nov. 1890 at Brunswick. Lucius Edgar I s parents were James Laurence Wooten, born 21 Sept 1818 Greene County GA, and Laura Frances Whitley, born 21 Dec 1836 Hamilton NC. They were married 18 Dec1855 at Brunswick TN. Of their 11 Children, the first 6 were born in Shelby County 'TN, the 7th in Panola County MS, the 8th and 9th in Yalobusha County MS, the 10th and probably the 11th in Shelby County TN. On the basis of this information, we started our usual search. We found records showing several Wooten and Laurence families in Greene and its predecessor Georgia counties between 1773 and 1820, but none of these appeared to include the parents of Edgar's great grandfather James Laurence Wooten. We did find a James Wooten in the 1850 Census of Shelby County 'TN, age 30, carpenter, born Georgia, a single man living in the household of J. W. Gillespie, carpenter age 33 [Roll 895 P 151]. Edgar and Nina confirmed that his grandfather Lucius Edgar had been a skilled carpenter and that at least three generations of the family had been carpenters. In spite of this promising beginning, I found no more clues to James I parents for nearly seven years, except for the Georgia Laurence/Wooten connections already mentioned above. Fortunately, we now finally have what seems a certain identification of James I parents as BRANSON D. WOOTEN and his wife MATILI:DA. IAURRENCE. We have had records of Branson for years, starting with his winning a lot in the Georgia Land Lottery in 1820, when he is shown living in Greene County GA. We then find him in the 1830 Census in Troup County GA, and in the 1850 Census in Tishamingo County Mississippi. This latter census household names his wife Matilday and several children, but with no mention 165 of a James Laurence Wooten, Who would have left home by this time, being about 32 in 1850. It therefore did rot occur to me that Edgar Bell's great-grandfatl1er might be found in Branson I s family. I eventually reported all this to our Associate Harold R. Jones of San Mateo CA-.., Who is descended from Branson's daughter Syntha Who DOES appear in the 1850 Census age 16 born Tennessee. Recently, I received a letter from Harold reporting his discovery of a transcript of a Wooten Bible in GENEALOGICAL REOORDS 1939-1979, Natchez Trace Chapter (DAR) No. 3-041-MS, Booneville Mississippi, compiled by Mrs. Paul F. Dobbins 1974-1980. This Bible is described as II formerly owned by Aunt Annie Johnsey later owned by Mrs. Henrietta Majors Hollingsworth", the latter being a daughter of Branson I s daughter Syntha (cyntha). The first WOOTEN entry is found under MARRIAGES, as follows: Branson D. Wooten and Matilda his wife was married 11th Sept AD 1812. NOTE: THIS IS CLEARLY A MISTAKE, SINCE WE SHALL SHORI'LY FIND BRANSON'S AND MATILDA'S BIRTHS GIVEN AS 1793 AND 1801! Harold and I believe the year of tl1eir marriage should be 1817. The next marriage is much later: Thomas Swiney and Matilda his wife was married 25th October AD 1855. [We shall see later that THIS Matilda is almost certainly daughter of Branson and Matilda Wooten. ] Then comes a series of births: JAMES LAURENCE WOOTEN son of Branson & Matilday his wife was born tHe 21st day of September A D 1818 FERRIBY WOOTEN daughter of B. D. Wooten and Matilda his wife was born 3rd of March 1820 MARTHA WOOTEN was born November 21st 1822 BRANSON DOBBY WOOTEN son of Branson & Matilda Wooten was born April 5th 1825 WILLIAM C. T. WOOTEN son of Branson Dobby and Matilda Wooten his wife was born October 16th 1827 THOMAS I. WOOTEN a son of Branson D. Wooten and Matilda Wooten his wife was born the 2 day of Feb. 1830 SYNTHA WOOTEN was born February 2th 1833 LUCRETIA WOOTEN was born January 9th AD 1840 MATILDA WOOTEN was born December 26th 1836 AMANDA WOOTEN was born June 12th 1843 We then apparently start a new birth list, of which we give the first three: 166 BRANSON DOBBY WOOTEN was born March 15th 1793 MATILDA LAURENCE was born 29th August 1801 NATHAN WOOTEN was borned 8th of Oct. 1783 There are also 8 additional Laurence births, 1 Garner, 3 Winsletts, and 1 Hendrix. Then comes a list of 7 deaths with 1 birth: CHARITY LAURENCE wife of Stephen Laurence separated this life July 24 1812 STEPHEN LAURENCE separated this life Jan. 3 1815 FERRIBY VAUN daughter of B. D. WOOTEN separated this life Feby 3m 1841 On the basis of the above Bible record, there seems no reason to doubt that JAMES LAURENCE WOOTEN the son of Branson D. WOOTEN was identical to JAMES LAURENCE WOOTEN the great grandfather of Nina Bell's husband Edgar Bell. Now, Who were Branson Wooten and his wife Matilda Laurence? Their trail leads us right to a little nest of WOOTENS Laurences , and Alexanders, living on Shoulderbone Creek in Greene County Georgia. Greene County was formed in 1786 fram parts of Wilkes, Washington, and Oglethorpe Counties. The first Wooten to appear in this area was Lt. Thomas Wooten, Who on 7 December 1773 was allotted "200 acres on the no. side Broad River opposite the Mouth of Long CK. Whereon is a tree inscribed TW & a fence & 300 acres on So. side said River joining Vann' s old field. He is described in this record as THOMAS WOOTEN North Carolina, a wife & 7 sons & 1 daughter from 18 to 1 year old & 8 slaves. [Georgia Archives, Drawer no. 154, Box 65, entitled "Records of the Court of Land Commissioners dealing with the Ceeded Lands 1773-1775.J The next Wooten to appear in this area is a James Wooten who on 19 May 1778 paid a fee for a grant of 150 acres in Wilkes County. We have identified him as the James Wooten of Johnston County NC reported to have died of smallpox in Augusta around 1779 While a prisoner of the British. His widow and minor children are discussed in detail in our article "Faitha Wooten, A Georgia Pioneer", in the March 1987 Quarterly W 5-15. This article gives firm evidence that this James can not possibly be the father of Branson D. Wooten, Who was born same 14 years AFTER James' death. However, I believe he may have been Branson I s great-grandfather! Further evidence identifying James I children is given in our March 1984 Quarterly article "James Wooten of Johnston County NC. II In our Special Study No. V, THE WOOTENS OF YORK OOUNTY VIRGINIA, we account for the children of OOLONEL Thomas Wootten 167 of Wilkes, as well as for those of PRIVATE Thomas Wooten of Wilkes and De Kalb Counties, showing that neither of THEM had a son Branson Wooten. By elimination, this leaves us with the probability that Branson I s father was one of the seven sons of Lt. Thomas Wooten as shown in Thomas I 1773 grant in the "Ceeded I.imds" cited above.. All seven of thses sons were under 19 at that time, but by 1793 when Branson was born they should all have been over 21 years of age, quite capable of having fathered Branson in 1793. We have as yet found no record specifically naming any of Lt. Thomas I seven sons or his one daughter, but the odds seem favorable that any otherwise unidentified Wooten recorded as in or near the Greene County area between 1773 and 1800 nay be a son of Lt. Thomas, and if alive in 1793 possibly father of Branson. Here are same examples of such recorded Wootens: 5 Jan 1784--Wilkes County Land Court Minutes 1784, in drawer 45 Box 19, Georgia Archives. Named in this record are p. 49-THOMAS WOOTEN proves one headright (his own) [This is probably Lt Thomas himself. ] p. 56-JEREMIAH WOOTEN proves one headright (his own) (He receives a 200 acre land grant in 1790) 10 Feb l786--Wilkes County Estates Book DD Folio 31: Inventory of Thomas Wooten dec'd made 1 Dec 1785; includes 200 acres in Wilkes and 2 tracts of 287 1/2 each in Washington County, recorded 10 Feb 1786. [NOTE: This Thomas is clearly the same man described as Lt. Thomas. ] 3 Feb 1790--Greene County Deed Book 1 pp 434-435. James and Charity Wootten, administrators of Thomas Wootten late of Wilkes County, deceased, convey 287 1/2 acres in Greene (fonnerly Washington County) to John Lamar, land granted to Thomas Wootten Jan 25 1785. In an earlier article, I suggested that this James might be brother or son to Lt. Thomas, and that Charity might be Thomas' widow. I have quite definitely changed my opinion, partl y as a result of Branson' s family Bible. I now feel certain roth James and Charity are children of Lt. Thomas (who showed one daughter in 1773) and that it is this Charity Wooten who married Stephen Laurence and died 24 July 1812, according to the Bible record. James the administrator thus becomes a prime candidate to be Branson 's father, especially since we now know that Branson named his first son James. 8 Oct 1783-Nathan Wooten was born He obviously can NOT be Branson's father, but may be his older brother. Another Nathan Wooten also received a 287 1/2 acre land grant in Washington 168 County 1784. HE may be Branson I s father. 6 April 1789--Greene County Marriage record of James Wooten and Elizabeth Laurence. 28 May 1792--Greene Deed Book 1 (Formerly A). James Wooten and Elizabeth his wife, with others, sell 50 acres where they now live on Shouldbone Creek", to Walter Ellis. All parties are of Greene County. Warren County GA 1803--Stephen Laurence applies for administration of estate of Nathan Wooten. (Remember that Stephen is husband of Chari ty , as shown in the Bible record.) CONCLUSIONS: (same are tentative) 1. The foregoing establishes with certainty that Branson D. Wooten and Matilda Laurence were parents of James Laurence Wooten, ancestor of Edgar Bell. 2. The most likely father of Branson was the James Wooten who was administrator of Lt. Thomas Wooten I s estate. 3. Lt. Thomas was born in North Carolina, probably Johnston County, from which he disappears in 1772, arriving in Georgia by 1773 when he applies for land in what became Wilkes County. He was almost certainly son of the James Wooten reported to have died in Augusta as a prisoner of the British around 1779. However, Lt. Thomas' mother was NOT Fai tha Rogers, but an earlier wife of James of Johnston. 4. James Wooten of Johnston County NC was probably born in Isle of Wight County VA around 1725, where he was probably third or fourth son of Richard Wootten II and Lucy Council. 5. Richard II was son of Richard Wootton (Watton) I of IOW County VA and his wife Joyce (maiden name possibly Floyd). 6. Richard I, born around 1650, was son of the emigrant Thomas Watton and his wife Sarah Wood., widow of Arthur Wood. Thomas was baptised 27 Sept 1612 at Castor, Northamptonshire, Eng1and. He is first recorded in Virginia in 1639, and made his will in lOW County 1669-70. 7. Thomas" parents were Thomas and Jane Watton of Castor, as shown in tl1e Castor Parish Register. The principal records supporting the above conclusions are given in tl1e following references: WARFA Special Study No. I, THE WOOTTONS OF ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY VIRGINIA, for Castor, England, and IOW County VA. March 1988 Quarterly, for Castor Parish documents, pp 5-24 169 March 1984 Quarterly, "James Wooten of Johnston County NC" pp 5-15. March 1987 Quarterly, "Faitha Wooten, A Georgia Pioneer" pp 5-15.
