To Edith Pimentel & interested Woolsey researchers: I spent seven hours Monday in the FHL center and researched these Washington Co., Crawford Co. and Franklin Co., MO records. In HISTORY OF CRAWFORD COUNTY, MISSOURI.1987. FHL #977.862 D3c I found the following: p. 403. JAMES "JIM" WOOLSEY. Jim Woolsey was a prominent farmer, bricklayer and carpenter of the Steelville area. We believe he helped to build the old rock jail and the old Presbyterian Church. He was born in 1834 or 1835 in Washington Co., MO. His father was born in New York and was reported to have lived to abt 102 years old. Jim's mother was born in Tennessee. // Jim Woolsey and Sarah Pyatt were married in Steelville, MO, on 1 Dec 1859. Sarah born in MO in 1839, but here parents were born in Tennessee. Her father didn't return from the Civil War, then her mother Avis married her husband's brother Elijah Pyatt. Her (Sarah's) brothers were Daniel, William and John and at least one sister. // Jim Woolsey's sisters were Bethena who married William N. Hopkins in 1852, Catharine who married John Nichols 30 Jan 1860. Linda Abigail, and Amy who married a Howard. // Children born to Jim and Sarah Woolsey were: William, Jeff, Ferd, Frank, John (md Lydia Harmon and father of the late Johnny Woolsey), Ava Clara (8 Aug-1872 - 16 Jul 1941) md "Ike" Cassady in 1890, Ida md Ed Withrow, Florence md a Coleman, and Susie md 1) Sam Housewright 2) Tim Lakin. Sons Jeff, Ferd, and Frank moved to Arkansas and there are many descendants there. // There was a Woolsey School near the old homeplace which was somewhere near the Midland Church of today - south on Highway 19 and then east on Woolsey Road. // Sarah died in 1910 the home of her daughter Ava Cassady, and Jim died in 1922. Both are buried at Martin Cemetery near Cherryville. Also: !HISTORY: HISTORY OF CRAWFORD COUNTY, MISSOURI 1821-1987. 1987. FHL #977.862 D3c. p. 403. JOHN and IRMA WOOLSEY. John Jiles Woolsey was born in Steelville, MO, 17 Mar 1904 to John Woolsey and Lydia Ann (Harmon) Woolsey. Lydia Ann had come over to this country on a boat from Germany at the age of three and her family lived in Virginia before moving to Steelville. They had three children: John, Jr., Lillie and Ethel. Irma Elizabeth housewright was born in Steelville, MO 3 Sep 1909 to the union of Sanford Housewright and Lizzie Reynolds. // On 9 Sep 1925 John Woolsey and Irma Housewrighty were md at the home of Rev Todd in Steelville, MO. Three children were born, Mary Lou, Shirley Jean and John Dale. Dr. Parker delivered all three at their home place, in Steelville. // While small Mary Lou and Shirley attended the old Woolsey School, which their grandpa Woolsey helped build. Mary Thurman, a friend of the family, was their teacher. They attended Pleasant View School on Highway 19, for a short while. As small children we can remember going into town on Saturdays and getting a bag of candy. Also we remember going to Jonas Drug Store and buying ice cream called a laddie bar and if you got one with pink ice cream instead of white you recived another one free. We couldn't wait to bite into the bar to see what color it was. // John worked on the WPA while young, also with the highway department for many years before moving to St. Louis. After numerous jobs John formed his own Asphalt Paving Company, Woolsey Const. Co. // Mary Lou md Norman West from Leasburg, MO and they have one son, Larry Notice there was a Catherine Woolsey who md John Nichols in 1860. I found the following in Crawford County PROBATE COURT, 1835-1878. FHL film #914159. E:102. Estate of John W. & Preston R. Nickols, minors 7 Mar 1872 - Balinda Woolsey apptd Curator of Estate. Balinda Woolsey, grdn. - Judge Wm. W. Robinson, Judge of Probate. Filed 3 Sep 1872 & Recorded 5 Sep 1872 by R. W. Dunlap, Recorder. It appears that Catharine Woolsey md John Nichols and they had the two minor children listed above and Catharine or perhaps both had died by 1872 and Catharine's sister Balinda was named guardian for the minor children, John W. & Preston Nichols. Enough for now. Wilford W. Whitaker
