Glenda Argo sent information about a "General William H. Woolsey. I replied as follows: If anyone can add anything, please jump in. Dear Glenda Argo: Thank you for your recent post re: "General William H. Woolsey". I am interested in helping you with this line and want to work with you. Please keep in touch. I had seen your post in GenForum 18 Jul 2000, but I didn't have anything to add to what you had so I never followed through on it. Even now, I'm afraid I can't help you very much as this is a new line to me. However, I will send what I have. First, I am having a little trouble "interpreting" your data and have come up with a little different pedigree chart than what you may have. I really need more details and data, so if you can fill in the blanks, it would be most helpful. Here is my "interpretation": [Click on the "maximize" square to make a full- page.] __Peter Lovejoy Sr. __Mr. | 1755 - MA | | 1793 - VT | __Peter Lovejoy Jr.____| md 1775 - VT? J. D. D.'s grandmother) | b. abt 1788 | |___ Mrs. ___ Now I don't have any General William or William H. Woolseys. I do have some William Woolseys in New York who were in the Revolutionary War, but no indication that they were Generals. There is a William Woolsey from Maryland in the Rev. War, but again no rank, and very little information. There were a couple of William Woolseys in the Rev. War from Tennessee, but their offspring is pretty well accounted for. There is a William Woolsey in Lincoln and Fayette Counties, KY land entries, 1779 - 1817. Index to Mayfield's entries. FHL film #272977. 30 May 1780 - He received quite a bit of land, indicating higher rank, but I know almost nothing of him. He received 1000 acres on "Buckskin including a small cabbin built by George McClure 3 miles below the Fall's trace." On 18 May 1780 William Woolsey 1000 acres "on a creek of Kentucky river." On 18 May 1780 William Woolsey 1000 acres "on Bullskin" On 30 May 1780 William Woolsey 400 acres on Solomon Branch. There was a Henry Wolsey (also Wooley) who entered land and a Peter Wooley 400 acres 9 Feb 1780 on the Dividing ridge between Paint Lick and Dick's River. The above William Woolsey may be a William Wooley. I have not traced these men. We do have one Colonel and one General in the Woolsey family. Colonel Melancthon Taylor Woolsey, b 1710 (s/o Rev. Benjamin Woolsey & Abigail Taylor) who was in the French and Indian War and was killed while serving. He had a daughter who lived to maturity and I don't know what happened to her. She could be the daughter in question?? Also Colonel Melancthon Taylor had a son, General Melancthon Lloyd Woolsey, but he is one generation too late, I think. He had daughters who have not been accounted for. I wish I could have been of more help, but I am interested and will work with you on this problem. Sincerely, Wilford W. Woolsey > Mr. Whitaker - > It is evident that you have done a tremendous amount of research on the Woolsey family. I am looking for information on one William H. Woolsey. The only information I have to go on was taken from a wonderful article written in a Woodward, Oklahoma newspaper in January 1925. The article focussed on the life and family of Miss Jessie D. Oberlender. In the article she makes the statement, "My grandmother was Miss Anna Lovejoy of Iowa, whose father's mother was General William Woolsey's daughter." > Anna Lovejoy married Peter Lovejoy Jr. (1783-1874 Vermont). Peter Lovejoy Sr. (abt. 1755 - 1793 Mass. -Vermont) married Anna Averill in 1775. If Jessie Oberlender's statement was correct, Peter Sr. must have had another marriage...to the daughter of William H. Woolsey. I have not seen any mention so far of a Woolsey & Lovejoy arriage ....but then I have just started working on the Woolsey family. Churchill is another line connected with the Lovejoy line. Do you have any information on a William H. Woolsey who was a "General?" I realize the information in the article could be incorrect but I have to start somewhere. I am thanking you in advance for any ideas or information you might have. Sincerely......Glenda Argo
