    3. To Chuck Taylor, Donna Briggs & other interested researchers: I have been aware of John Thomas Woolsey for some time -I have been unable to fit him into any of the Tennessee Woolsey families. After re-reading your recent post, I have decided to look closely at the Ohio Woolseys, which I have not checked for John Thomas Woolsey. It will take me some time to do this, so I will get back to the Woolsey list with what I find. I do have the following, which please notice one census says he was born in Tenn, and another census says Ohio. I am inclined to believe the Ohio birthplace is more correct. !RESEARCH: FHL Automated Resources Center. Auglaize County, Ohio. John T. 2. Here's something that could help us all... my Hubs showed this to me and it is very cool... it allows you to share an application...like a genealogy program... without the other person having it on their computer. (they can also take control of your program if you wish but you should trust them first!) During this you can talk to them with the microphone . it is called netmeeting. to get net meeting you go to searc.com, type "netmeeting" into the search frame at the bottom of the page. scroll through until you find "microsoft netmeeting" download and install it. then after you are connected to the internet you start this program. you find out your IP number (use the start button at the bottom left then run winipcfg and it will give you that number. It will be different each time you are on the net.) You find out the other person's IP number and you can connect up and actually talk about your genealogy by showing your program to the other person while you verbally (or chat dialogue box) talk. photos and everything show up. will be great for trying to figure out connections. 1. Looking for UR Thoughts
    2. Good Day to all WOOLSEY Researchers: Name here is HOLLIS DON WOOLSEY. It has been several months scenes I posted a note on the list. That post listed the family of William A. and Caroline WOOLSEY of Jackson Co. Ill. 1840 to 1869. I made my first post around the first of this year, looking for info on my great grand parents, John Johnson WOOLSEY and wife Armildia. At that time, Whit graciously did a search in Ill. for any matches for a John. He found none, but very quietly suggested that I look at the above William A. family. Now I do not know if Whit knew something special or just wanted to teach me to play this game of "find the lost stick "(branch)! At any rate, I got into the game pretty well and did a fair job of researching them. I will not repeat that listing now, but would like to add to it. I lost trace of the William A./ Caroline Woolsey family in Ill. at 1869 and with no John there. I have not yet been able to do a line by line search of the 1860 Census in Ill, but could not find anything on the Web for that one. 1870 Census Lynn Twp Cedar Co. Mo. And Sarah's husband Francis Marion VOUGHT died Feb 6 1862 in the Civil War. 1880 Census Denton Co. Tx. I also find Armildia's family RUTHs. If I were playing poker, here is where I would increase the money in the pot. FOUR names found in the William A. WOOLSEY family from Jackson Co. Ill are repeated in my John J WOOLSEY family. William, Milton, Caroline, and Lockey. This last name Lockey is very unusual and I do not see it but three times in any of my searches anywhere. The other time I see Lockey is in the family that might be Caroline's parents. That is another story to be worked out. OK group, here is where each of you can put your 2 cents into the $ 64 million question. Is the JOHN in the Mo. family my JOHN? Would like to receive as many thoughts on this as possible, and what more would it take to solidify the connection? Thanks for putting up with such a long post. Hollis D Woolsey

    1. Jamaica, Long Island, Early Ministers
    2. To interested Woolsey researchers: In some of my very earliest postings, I referenced the baptisms of the children of our Immigrant Ancestors George Woolsey and Rebecca Cornell and suggested that there were at least two congregations in New Amsterdam, the Dutch Reformed and the English Protestant, probably the Congregationists. Later on, the English Episcopal Church struggled to get a foot hold and it was in the Jamaica area that the first Churches were started. I have been researching the early ministers of that area and am particularly interested in the Rev. Poyer because he preached the sermon at the funeral of Rebecca Cornell Woolsey. Some of his sermons have been preserved and I am attempting to locate them, but so far without success. Following is my incomplete research on the early Ministers of Long Island. There was an on-going controversy in Jamaica between the traditionalists and the new Episcopalians over the ownership of the Church at Jamaica. George Woolsey, Jr. (son of our Immigrants) was right in the middle of it and his son the Reverend Benjamin Woolsey (I wonder if this man was the one the early researchers mistakenly ascribed as Rev Benj Woolsey, supposedly the father of our Immigrant Ancestor, which is not correct.)was also involved, through his wife, the daughter of Abigail Taylor, widow of the Rev. Urquart. And speaking of George Woolsey Jr, I ordered a microfilm of an account book of his in which he kept accounts of a "general" store in Jamaica before 1700. Very interesting but not much family data. And now the MINISTERS OF LONG ISLAND: MINISTERS OF LONG ISLAND 1657 17 July Mr. Robbert fordim 1657 25 July Mr. dentons ministrie 1676 19 June Certificate from Jemaica to treat with Mr. John Prudden to be their minister 1678 24 June Rev. 1. Gold and James Bradshaw Woolsey
    2. To Nancy Kent Thoben and interested Woolsey researchers: One never knows what one will turn up when digging around. I found this interesting story on James Woolsey and thought it may be the brother of my ancestor, Sarah Woolsey. I have since decided that this is James Bradshaw Woolsey and I have a great picture of him. !HIST: The Smithsonian Magazine. January 1998. (ON-LINE: www.smithsonianmag.si.edu) "The Lure of Gold" Collection of Matthew R. Isenburg, et al. "The nugget he had pulled from the mine near Sierraville, (Sierra County), California, weighed a whopping eight pounds, so JAMES WOOLSEY did what came naturally during the gold rush: he had his "likeness" taken to commemorate the event. For three or four dollars, a forty-niner could walk into a daguerreotype studio - located in the tent city that had sprung up in San Francisco, or in one of the portable wagon-studios that plied the mining camps - and have a cased image made to send to loved ones back home. Business was especially brisk when a steam was about to leave for the East. In his advertising broadside, photographer William Shew advised: " ... it is for your advantage to call soon after the steamer leaves, and you will have a much better chance to get good pictures." The picture isn't with the above but is in the Time-Life Series "The West" and its special 49'ers. Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

    1. Fw: John (Adams) Snead Info.
    2. Hi Wilford: This is one of the messages I tried to send you earlier. The Memorium for John Snead identifies the father of Snead's second wife (Nancy Marietta Woolsey) as John C. Snead of Kentucky. Isaac Gray Woolsey baptized Snead several years before he and Nancy were married. If Isaac and John C. Woolsey were brothers(there was also a sister Agnes - this would make 3 of Zephaniah's 4 children), as you have speculated, then Isaac could very well have taken in Nancy and her sister Agnes (named after her aunt?) when the girls were orphaned and introduced Nancy to Snead. Another point of interest: Isaac lived in Locust Grove, Ga approximately 1865 - 1875. Snead and Nancy (according to her grandaughter, my mother) lived there also for a while. Their first child, John Woolsey Snead, was born in Woolsey, Ga 1889. So it would appear Nancy was connected to Isaac, probably his niece. Apparently in Biographical Sketches of Prominent Baptist, which I am trying to locate, Isaac is reported as the youngest of 4 children of Zephaniah and Anna Crouch Woolsey. Would be interested in your thoughts. More to follow. 3. To all interested Woolsey researchers: I went away on a vacation and while I was gone, my internet provider made changes and didn't notify me. If you sent me any messages in the past month or so, please repost them, as I didn't receive any. Also, if you posted to the Woolsey list, and haven't heard from me, that is the reason. Please repost any Woolsey List messages that you think I should have received. I don't have my new address yet, but can be reached here. Thank you. Wilford W. Whitaker

    1. Fw: John C. Woolsey
    2. Hi Marjorie: Found this reference to Isaac G. Woolsey while going through my database. I believe the John C. Woolsey mentioned here is the father of my gggrandmother, Nancy Marietta Woolsey who married John Adams Snead (think I sent you his memorium - Antioch Baptist Church, Fayette Co, Woolsey Ga which names John C. Snead as the father of John Snead's second wife, Nancy M. Woolsey). This is the closest I have come in confirming (loosely!) a family connection to Isaac. Nancy had a sister, Agnes. She and the girls were ophaned at some point. The 1870 Clinton Co Kentucky census shows a John C. Woolsey 51, Nancy M. , Agnes, Elizabeth . I speculate John C. Woolsey and Elizabeth(I assume this is another daugher of John C.) probably died before the 1880 census. Also, Nancy M. and John Snead lived in Locust Grove, Ga for a time (as did Isaac). Isaac baptized John Snead in 1881, and Nancy M. and John Snead's son, John C. Woolsey was born in Woolsey, Ga (June 1, 1889). Hope this isn't too overwhelming and I appologize for any repetition of information. Sincerely, Gail -----Original Message----- From: Wilford W. 3. Dear Listers, I have just joined and hope that someone will be able to please assist me with my extremely elusive WOOLSEYs. I am particularly looking for information on the parents, grandparents and siblings of my great grandmother Amy Maud PANNELL, born 25 Oct 1888 in St Paul Hammersmith, Middlesex, England. She died in Vereeniging, South Africa on 12 Mar 1962. She emigrated to South Africa as an adult and worked as a nurse, when soon after she married my great grandfather Elijah John Henry TURNER in Grahamstown, Cape, South Africa on abt. 1905. They had 4 children. Amy Maud PANNELL's father was George Ernest PANNELL, born abt. 1851 in Marlybone, Middlesex, and her mother was Harriet WOOLSEY, born abt. 1855, Kent, London.
