    3. Just a note to say that I descend from George the son of Richard Woolsey and Nancy Plumstead. I am new to the internet, but have dabbled in the family information for 30 years. I have the recent information on my family and am trying to get it into good shape before sending it out to be shared by all. I have really enjoyed the postings on the L-list and have quietly appreciated all the work I see others doing. I'll be happy to share with you all soon. Just a note to Wilford, my father's sister Marie Woolsey, married Alfred Whiteaker. I know the name is spelled differently, but wondered if there could be an additional connection through the Whitaker side as well as the Woolsey side of the family. I probably don't have anything that would help you, but wanted to take the time to say hello to another cousin. 3. To Shirley Petty and interested Woolsey researchers: I received the following from Shirley Petty: Wilford, did you ever come up with anything on Nathaniel Woolsey of IL? You said you thought he might hold a key to the other Woolseys in IL and TN. Just wondering. He is my dead-end/brick-wall/toe-stumpper/mind-boggler................. Shirley Petty Hi, Shirley: Thank you for remembering. I was excited about doing more research on Nathaniel Woolsey, but when I got to that county in Illinois, (I don't have the name of it at hand right now.) I discovered I had already searched all the books in the SL Family History Library, with very little success. There were several microfilms on land transactions, etc. which I spent several hours searching, but found nothing of consequence except some land dealings of Thomas Woolsey, son of Nathaniel. I have concluded that Nathan Woolsey (with Thomas in the census records) is a son of Nathaniel Woolsey and an earlier wife. Very disappointing. I was hoping I would find more in cemetery records, etc, but didn't. I'm doing this from memory right now but I think you can get the idea. I didn't have much success there. Sincerely, Wilford W. 3. Cardinal Thomas Wolsey 1475 - 1530 Cardinal Wolsey was an English clergyman and statesman, born in Ipswich, Suffolk, East England, United Kingdom. He studied at Oxford, was ordained in 1498, appointed chaplain to Henry VII in 1507, and became dean of Lincoln. Under Henry VIII, he became Bishop of Lincoln, Archbishop of York (1514), and a cardinal (1515). He was made Lord Chancellor (1515 - 1529), and pursued legal and administrative reforms. During this time, he became Henry VIII's leading adviser, in charge of the day-to-day running of government. He aimed to make England a major power in Europe, and also had ambitions to become pope, but his policy of supporting first Emperor Charles V (1523), then Francis I of France (1528) in the Habsburg--Valois conflict was unsuccessful, and high taxation caused much resentment. When he failed to persuade the pope to grant Henry's divorce, he was impeached and his property forfeited. He was arrested on a charge of high treason, and died while travelling to London! .

He was chairman of the America committee for the revision of the New Testament (1871 - 1881). 1. Woolsey superstition at Yale
    2. Wilford Whitaker
    3. To any interested Woolsey researchers: I found this interesting anecdote concerning Theodore Dwight Woolsey, President of Yale College. !ON-LINE: Yale Daily News. 1995. Shahenna Ahmad, A&L Reporter. Superstitions persist throughout Yale campus. "A statue of Theodore Dwight Woolsey sits in the middle of Old Campus, its left foot worn smooth and shiny by the countless Yale students who have rubbed it in hope of boosting their GSAs. In the midst of Yale's serious academia, superstition is alive and well. Every year upperclasspeople in Saybrook and Branford warn newly arrived freshmen against stepping on the millstones embedded in the courtyards. Stepping on the millstones, which were delivered to Yale by oxen in the 1920's, is said to jinx a student's chances of graduating. The superstition that rubbing Woolsey's foot before a test brings good luck is one of many perpetuated by students year after year. ... 'I've rubbed Woolsey's foot several times,' said Tauss, 'There wasn't any noticeable improvement in my grades, but then I've stepped on the millstone many times, so maybe they cancel out or something.' Most,! like the Woolsey superstition, are academic in nature, but a few involve the supernatural. The fact that the New Haven Green was once a graveyard and 5,000 bodies remain buried there has fostered rumors of ghosts and hauntings." (more in article) Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

Dear Glenda Argo: Thank you for your recent post re: "General William H. Woolsey". I am interested in helping you with this line and want to work with you. Please keep in touch. I had seen your post in GenForum 18 Jul 2000, but I didn't have anything to add to what you had so I never followed through on it. Even now, I'm afraid I can't help you very much as this is a new line to me. However, I will send what I have. First, I am having a little trouble "interpreting" your data and have come up with a little different pedigree chart than what you may have. I really need more details and data, so if you can fill in the blanks, it would be most helpful. Here is my "interpretation": [Click on the "maximize" square to make a full- page.] __Peter Lovejoy Sr. __Mr. | 1755 - MA | | 1793 - VT | __Peter Lovejoy Jr.____| md 1775 - VT? J. D. I do have some William Woolseys in New York who were in the Revolutionary War, but no indication that they were Generals. There is a William Woolsey from Maryland in the Rev. War, but again no rank, and very little information. There were a couple of William Woolseys in the Rev. War from Tennessee, but their offspring is pretty well accounted for. There is a William Woolsey in Lincoln and Fayette Counties, KY land entries, 1779 - 1817. Index to Mayfield's entries. FHL film #272977. 30 May 1780 - He received quite a bit of land, indicating higher rank, but I know almost nothing of him. He received 1000 acres on "Buckskin including a small cabbin built by George McClure 3 miles below the Fall's trace." On 18 May 1780 William Woolsey 1000 acres "on a creek of Kentucky river." On 18 May 1780 William Woolsey 1000 acres "on Bullskin" On 30 May 1780 William Woolsey 400 acres on Solomon Branch. There was a Henry Wolsey (also Wooley) who entered land and a Peter Wooley 400 acres 9 Feb 1780 on the Dividing ridge between Paint Lick and Dick's River. The above William Woolsey may be a William Wooley. I have not traced these men. We do have one Colonel and one General in the Woolsey family. Colonel Melancthon Taylor Woolsey, b 1710 (s/o Rev. Benjamin Woolsey & Abigail Taylor) who was in the French and Indian War and was killed while serving. He had a daughter who lived to maturity and I don't know what happened to her. She could be the daughter in question?? Also Colonel Melancthon Taylor had a son, General Melancthon Lloyd Woolsey, but he is one generation too late, I think. He had daughters who have not been accounted for. I wish I could have been of more help, but I am interested and will work with you on this problem. Sincerely, Wilford W. Oberlender. In the article she makes the statement, "My grandmother was Miss Anna Lovejoy of Iowa, whose father's mother was General William Woolsey's daughter." > Anna Lovejoy married Peter Lovejoy Jr. (1783-1874 Vermont). Peter Lovejoy Sr. (abt. 1755 - 1793 Mass. -Vermont) married Anna Averill in 1775. If Jessie Oberlender's statement was correct, Peter Sr. must have had another marriage...to the daughter of William H. Woolsey. I have not seen any mention so far of a Woolsey & Lovejoy arriage ....but then I have just started working on the Woolsey family. Churchill is another line connected with the Lovejoy line. Do you have any information on a William H. Woolsey who was a "General?" I realize the information in the article could be incorrect but I have to start somewhere. I am thanking you in advance for any ideas or information you might have. Sincerely......Glenda Argo

    1. Joell Woolsey
    2. Hello Wilford. In Ancestry.com I found the following Woolsey. Do you have anymore on him? Search Results Search Terms: WOOLSEY (1) Database: The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-33 Combined Matches: 1 JOEL WOOLSEY In the 2 December 1631 patent from the Council for New England of the land that would become York, one of the patentees was "Joell Woolsey, gent.," who was the last among eight who were described as "all of New England" [Council NE 101]. COMMENTS: Of the eight patentees supposed to be of New England only two, Thomas Coppyn and Joel Woolsey, left no record in New England. THOMAS COPPYN was brother-in-law of WALTER NORTON, also a patentee. Perhaps Joel Woolsey was himself related to one of the patentees.
