    3. Jill Jessen Hernandez sent the following: Wilford, HOPE I find you ??? I have a GGGG Grandfather named "George PLUM WOOLEY" for the life of me I cannot find any reference to that middle name of PLUM.......until NOW with a message (excerpt below) that you wrote a few years ago.. I am amazed.... NOW, my line is from NJ, Monmouth and Hunterdon Counties.. my George's parents were Ezekiel WOOLEY and Mary/Polly PHILLIPS..we cannot find Ezekiel' parentage... I do not have my records handy..... I have a new computer ahahaha... "I got started documenting this family because I found that there were enough children in the Ancestral File and IGI for Richard and ***Nancy Plumstead Woolsey **** for 5 families, 1 in Bedford, Westchester, 2 in Virginia and 2 in Kentucky! Thomas Woolsey, son of Joseph and Abigail Schaeffere Woolsey, had over 30 pages of references to him alone. I have this pretty well worked out." I would appreciate anything that you could share or any insight to the PLUM in Grandpapa name Jill Jessen Hernandez Laguna Niguel, Ca To Jill and other Woolsey researchers: We have a Woolsey family that crossed the river from NY into NJ in the late 1600's, but I have no indication of an Ezekiel Woolsey. Nor do I have any indications of a George Plum Woolsey. The names Wooley and Woolsey are two separate names and there is very little indication of the two names being used interchangeably, although there is a Wooley/Woolery family in Madison County, Kentucky, that I wonder may be a Woolsey family. Also Plum/Plumb and Plumbstead are two separate families with little indication of being interchanged, although one can see the possibility in unique situations. One would need a lot more information about George Plum Wooley and Ezekiel Wooley before one could even suggest that there may be a Woolsey connection. Having said that, in Jackson County, Indiana, my ancestress Sarah Woolsey Hickerson's two brothers' marriages were indexed as Thomas Woolery and Richard Woolery, so I learned early to check every possible spelling in the indexes. But those were mis-readings by the compiler of "s" and "e". Sorry I can't be of more help. Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

    3. To Norb Woolsey and interested Woolsey researchers: This is a three-part reply to Norb Woolsey, of Tucson, and his query regarding the two Samuel Woolseys, one of Lawrence County, Tennessee, and one of Washington County, Arkansas. 1. First of all, I'm going to talk about the GILBERT family. If anyone can add to this, it would be greatly appreciated. One Reverend Samuel GILBERT seems to have been in Westchester and Ulster Counties, New York. Much of what I give following is conjecture and educated guesses, so no one should accept it at face value, as yet. But Rev. Samuel GILBERT seems to have followed the same migration as our Reverend Thomas Woolsey of Westchester County, New York, and Washington (and Smyth) County, Virginia. Rev. Samuel GILBERT may have had the following children: 1. Stephen Gilbert, b 5 Aug 1762 of Salem, Westchester, New York, d 25 Jun 1844, at Salem, Westchester, New York. He md Sarah _______ abt 1785. 2. Phoebe Gilbert, b 10 May 1763 at Esopus, Ulster, New York, d 1835, possibly in Greene County, Tennessee. She md 1) abt 1779, probably in Washington Co, VA, Rev. Thomas Woolsey, Jr. (son of Rev Thomas Woolsey, above) and she md 2) 10 Jan 1799 in Greene Co, Tennessee, to Giles Parman, Sr. 3. Mary Gilbert, b abt 1767, probably in New York, died abt 1846 in Clarksville, Red River, Texas, md 14 Jun 1787 in Greene County, Tennessee, to John Woolsey IV - (War of 1812). 4. Hannah Gilbert, b 1771, probably in Washington Co, VA and died 1855 in Henry County, Tennessee, and buried in the Breedlove Cemetery. She md abt 1792, possibly in Greene Co, Tennessee to Thomas Haynes. 5. Cassandra Gilbert [Gilbird], b 20 May 1773, Tennessee [?www], died bef 1820, Greene Co, Tennessee. She md 1 Sep 1801, Greene Co, Tennessee, to Samuel Woolsey who d 25 Nov 1844 in Lawrence Co, Tennessee. I don't think that this was any coincidence that this group of Woolseys married into this Gilbert family, but rather there were close connections between the GILBERTS and WOOLSEYS. Can anyone shed further light on this family? 2. Second, I'm going to discuss the wonderfully convoluted, intermarriages of several branches of our WOOLSEY family. One needs a precise "roadmap" to keep these families all straight. Again, some of this is conjecture and should not be incorporated into your family history until [unless] proven!! Samuel WOOLSEY b 1 Jan 1774 in Washington Co, VA, d 25 Nov 1844, Lawrence Co, TN, md 1 Sep 1801 in Greene Co, TN, to Cassandra Gilbert (above). They had a large family and Norb Woolsey thinks that his ancestor James WOOLSEY b 22 Nov 1813, Greene Co, TN, d 11 Oct/23 Oct 1871, in Desoto Co, MS, and md abt 1843, in Desoto Co, MS, to Elizabeth Stone is a son of this Samuel WOOLSEY. We find this Samuel WOOLSEY in the Court Docket Minutes of Lawrence Co, TN from 1818-1822, as well as in the 1820 Census of Lawrence Co, TN. In 1830 Samuel WOOLSEY buys land in Lawrence Co, TN and sells that land in 1834, he signed his name with an "X". It appears that Samuel WOOLSEY may have been i! n the War of 1812. We find a Samuel WOOLSEY in the 1840 census of Limestone Co, Alabama, but not known if the same as Samuel of Lawrence Co, TN. This Samuel WOOLSEY who md Cassandra Gilbert is the son of John Woolsey III and his 2nd wife Sarah Oliphant. [Samuel WOOLSEY, s/o John Woolsey & Sarah Oliphant, s/o John Woolsey II & Mary Sammis, s/o John Woolsey & Abigail (Stephenson?), s/o George Woolsey & Rebecca Cornell, our immigrant ancestors.) I have found evidence that Mary Sammis above, wife of John WOOLSEY II, could be the daughter of Mary Cornish, but the name of Mary's father is unknown at this time. Also I have a pedigree of Sarah Oliphant above, 2nd wife of John Woolsey III, showing her parents and grandparents. I haven't tracked them down but the names came from the Oliphant - List on rootsweb.com. 3. Third, I guess the "wonderfully convuluted, intermarriages" begin here, as I discuss the other Samuel (Gilbert) WOOLSEY of Farmington (Fayetteville), Washington Co, Arkansas. Samuel Gilbert WOOLSEY b 31 Aug 1791, Greene Co, TN, d 1858 near Farmington, Washington, AR, md 11 Jan 1810, Randolph Co, IL to Matilda Thompson b 20 Jan 1794, , Kentucky, d 1871, Farmington, Washington, AR. They had a large family. [Samuel Gilbert WOOLSEY was the s/o John WOOLSEY IV and Mary GILBERT (above). John WOOLSEY IV b 22 Feb 1763, Marlboro, Ulster, NY, d 13 Aug 1842 at Clarksville, Red River, Texas, md 14 Jun 1787, Greene Co, TN to Mary GILBERT (above). John WOOLSEY IV was the s/o John WOOLSEY III (above) and his first wife Priscilla WOOLSEY b 1741, Bedford, Westchester, NY, d 1772, Marlboro, Ulster, NY. They md 20 Nov 1761 at Marlboro, Ulster, NY. John Woolsey III s/o John Woolsey II and Mary Sammis, s/o John Woolsey & Abigail (Stephenson?), s/o George Woolsey & Rebecca Cornell.] {Priscilla WOOLSEY was the d/o Rev. Thomas WOOLSEY (above) of Westminster Co, NY and Washington Co, VA., s/o Richard WOOLSEY & Sarah Fowler, s/o Thomas Woolsey & Ruth Baylis, s/o George Woolsey & Rebecca Cornell}. Samuel (Gilbert?) WOOLSEY is found in Johnson Co, IL County Commissioners' Minutes from 1814-1817. It is believed that this Samuel (Gilbert?) WOOLSEY is the man named in the will of Thomas Woolsey of Hempstead Co, AR 1828, as Exo'r. To Illinois abt 1810, possibly in War of 1812, with his father John, to Arkansas after 1816. Samuel WOOLSEY was granted land in Hempstead Co, AR in 1827, in Howard Co, AR in 1827 and several grants in Washington Co, AR in 1838. Samuel WOOLSEY is found in the 1840 Census of Washington Co, AR, in Prairie Twp, where is also found one William WOOLSEY, possibly a brother of Samuel. Samuel (Gilbert?) WOOLSEY is found in the 1850 Census of Prairie Twp, Washington Co, AR with his wife Matilda, and 5 children. So, Norb, there are the two Samuel WOOLSEYS. I hope that helps. I would be interested in a copy of the "Arkansas Democrat - Gazette, Inc" article, if you would care to send it. Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

    2. I received a newspaper clipping from a cousin in which Samuel Woolsey was mentioned in the article. The article was about a neglected cemetery in Fayetteville, AR. They discovered the grave marker of Samuel Woolsey, whose 1800s farm was part of the land bought by the city. It also mentioned mentioned that Woolsey's tombstone described him as starting a farm on the site in 1830. It is going to be considered for placement on the National Register of Historic Places. Would anyone happen to have any information on this Samuel? I don't believe this is the same Samuel I am claiming from Lawrence Co, TN, but then again, I could be wrong. 3. To interested Woolsey researchers: Our Immigrant ancestors George Woolsey and Rebecca Cornell had their two youngest children baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church in Flatbush, (Brooklyn), Kings County, Long Island, New York, in 1677. I have found a drawing of this church as well as two photos of the Van Pelt - Woolsey Home in Brooklyn. Are there descendants of this branch of the family out there? OLD DUTCH HOUSES OF BROOKLYN VAN PELT - WOOLSEY HOUSE Brooklyn, Kings County, New York One of the most ancient streets in Brooklyn is called Hubbard Place. It was formerly Hubbard Lane and was originally part of an Indian footpath. On it stands a small house. The picket fence of early days has been replaced by a tall ledge [hedge? www]. It was built, so the story goes, about 1791 by Aert Van Pelt, who came from New Jersey and married Sarah Van Brunt, widow of Coert Van Voorhies, about 1765. - Aert and Sarah Van Pelt had three daughters and a son Coert, all of whom were baptized in the Flatlands Church. - When Aert died, Sarah inherited the house and farm. She died 31 Mar 1799 and eleven days later a vendue was held at her house. - On 31 Mar 1810, the property was bought for 505 lbs by Israel Woolsey who had married the Van Pelts' daughter Catlina (baptized 16 Jan 1772 - died 12 Mar 1837) on 13 Oct 1793. - [picture] - The Woolseys' youngest son Roeluff (17 Oct 1809 - 6 Feb 1860) inherited their house and farm. On 15 Dec 1849 he md Martha Bergen (12 Aug 1821 - 1! 8 Dec 1884) had two children: Tunis Bergen Woolsey, who moved to Minnesota when a young man, and Harriet Anna (18 Nov 1858-15 Dec 1907). - Harriet Anna was married in her home on Hubbard Lane to Dr. Clark Beckwith Glover on 14 Apr 1881 and went to Flatbush to live. The house was then rented and finally sold. - Israel Woolsey was probably descended from that George Woolsey, an English boy born in 1610 [1616 www], who had lived with his parents in Rotterdam and who came to America in a Dutch vessel in 1623 [probably not before 1643 www]. Later he went to Plymouth Colony [www doesn't think he was in Plymouth Colony.] but in 1647 was again in New Amsterdam where he was known as Joris Wolsey and where he married Rebecca Cornell on 9 Dec 1647. In 1648 he was a fire-warden there. - He had four [actually 8 www] children, the two younger of which were baptized in the Brooklyn Church, 30 Jun 1678. The Woolseys who lived in Flatlands early in the eighteenth century were no doubt his de! scendants. [picture] Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

    3. To Shirley & interested Woolsey researchers: Shirley suggested that Noah Woolsey may be the son of Stephen C. Woolsey. I thought that may indeed be the case, but I have the following: (From memory right now, I'll post the full source and quote later) During the Civil War there was a Missouri Northern Militia that surprised a Southern band of guerilla raiders. There was a skirmish and one of the Northern Militia was killed and also a young man named Noah Woolsey, son of Stephen C. Woolsey - there was no date of the source but probably about 1863-65. So Noah could not be your ancestor Noah who died in 1906? Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

    1. Missouri Woolsey's
    2. About 2 years ago, I was on an email list that described a connection with Jesse James and his gang. Apparently, a female resident of Missouri would hang a red item clothing on the clothesline as a signal to the James gang that the coast was clear and they could come inside for a meal. (This seem to only happen when the females' husband was travelling on business) I read this on either INGRAM or WOOLSEY list, but can't remember which? Does this ring a bell with anyone? Val

    3. Jennie McQueen and I had the following discussion: Wilford, Thanks for the info. I will see if I can find anything further on the children of Nancy and Matthew. I've been trying to go back generations and haven't feally pulled out all I can on the more recent ones. Will send anything I find. Whitaker > When I started this Woolsey family "documentation" about three years ago (this October) I stated that I thought that there was a great deal of material "out there" if we could only find it. As more and more Woolsey descendants are getting in touch with me, we are able to "document" more and more of the Woolsey family. I am in a very exciting position because I am able to hear from all of you and then am able to put it together in a reasonable form. However, I won't be working on this family indefinitely. I'm already one year over what I had originally planned on. Maybe one more year!! Right now I'm working with an individual on the Woolseys in Bedford, Westchester Co, NY and have been able to clear up several problems. I'll share that with you once I have his permission. Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

    3. To descendants of Richard Woolsey & Nancy Plumstead: I received the following post from Jennie McQueen: <Wilford, I noticed your post on Wollsey list on Thomas Woolsey, son of Richard Woolsey and Nancy Plumstead and was wondering if you have any further info on this line? Richard is my 5GGrandfather. I descend through his and Nancy's daughter, Nancy who married Matthew Hall. I would appreciate any info on this line. I'm willing to share whatever I have, although not a lot on this line. Looking forward to hearing from you. Jennie McQueen> Is anyone else out there connected to Matthew Hall and Nancy Woolsey? This is one line I don't have too much on. Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker
