    2. Wilford, Great story. I could feel the fear rising in my throat as you were recalling the visit! I haven't had a chance to work any further on my poor little unknown line of Woolsey's, but I do listen in to every exchange. I will be so very happy to let you all know if I find anything new. In case there might be a cousin from my pitiful little line, I will give you the sparse details and hope to hear from you. Emeline Woolsey b. 1824 d. 1900 married Isaac L. Hamm 23 May 1844 in St. Francois County, MO. She is buried in the Libertyville Christian Church Cemetary in St. Francois County, MO. There was only one other Woolsey in that county at the time, one Catherine Woolsey that lived with the Rachel Needham family. Have not done enough research with the census yet to see what clues it might bring me. Wilford, you are such a generous fella sharing all of your hard work with the rest of us. I know that I am not alone in saying "thank you". I tend to stay in the background evesdropping, so if I don't say something before next week, I'd like to wish you all a great Thanksgiving holiday, hopefully spent with your families and friends. Please be safe in your travels and let us all give THANKS! Cathy Hill

    1. James Woolsey/Elizabeth Stone
    2. Wilford, I was able to locate the gravesites of my James Woolsey and his first wife Elizabeth Stone on my recent visit to Mississippi. They are located in the Cox Cemetery near Olive Branch, MS. The cemetery is located on the private property of Norfleete Ellis, and is a family cemetery. The property is located next to what used to be my grandfather's farm. The tombstones are weathered pretty well, and appeared to be hand made by a W M Woolsey, and his "trademark" appears to have been the backward "S". Anyway, neither sites have been listed in any books, that I have seen, but they are there. His second wife, my grandmother Laura Carr, is also in the same cemetery. The visit to the DeSoto County Genealogical Society was very interesting, especially looking at the original records. Just didn't have enough time to go thru everything. Norb

Harvey and Mary Spaulding, b. 1838 in NY, had six children:Keziah (Kittie) A., Arthur, and Harriet with dates and locations you showed(1870 Census). Arthur and Harriet were not listed in 1880 Fed. census where Wesley D. b.1862; Ohio; Mabel A. b.12/1864 Oh.: Mary B. b 1869, Oh are found. Harvey died 3/24/1892 in Burton, Burton Twp Geauga Co. Oh. Same for Mary B. and any clues from listers would be greatly appreciated. A Kittie A. Woolsey (b.1852,IL.) mar. a Henry T. Morris in 1883 in Lake Co. Oh. NFI yet- unless a census entry in 1900 for a Kittie A. Morris with dau. Jessie b.1887 found in Ashtabula Co. , Orwell Twp. indicates she may be a widow. Wesley D. Woolsey mar. Minnie A. Pierce (b. ) , 9/7/1887 in Madison Twp.Lake Co. Oh. d/o of Hollis Pierce and Miranda Weeks of Lake Co. Wesley's date and place of death unknown. Minnie d. 1903 in Akron Oh. Children were Pierce E. Morris (my aunt) (b.8/6/1896 in Ashtabula Oh; d. 2/1982 Houghton NY) on 6/11/1921 in Unionville, Ashtabula Co. Oh. She was d/o Earl L. and Addie (Harmon) Morris (d/o Edwin Harmon and Harriet Harback). Children of Pierce and Mildred are still living. Ruth Woolsey mar. Walter James s/o Edward James and Mary Conklin, in Delaware Co. Ohio 3/15/1915 . Most of their children are still living. Mabel A. Woolsey d.1/20/1904 in Akron Oh and was listed as an invalid. In 1900 fed census she was enumerated with her son-in-law Arthur Johnson and wife Bertha Woolsey in Geauga Co. where Arthur and Bertha were married 6/4/1893. Her obit(Akron) indicated burial in Rock Creek Cem. (presumably in Ashtabula Co.NFI yet.). Arthur and Bertha recorded as having 2 children in Geauga Co.-birth records online. I need to get more documentation for some of the above. I have more "incidental" info for some of these poeple. My focus surname is Morris but have more on NE ohio for Stanton, Harmon, Fargo, Wheeler, West connections. Thank you Wilford for your prompt reply and huge opening to the more distant past. Roger

    3. Hi, Heather and interested Woolseys: This is the first record I have of a lady doctor (Physician) in the Woolsey family, though we have several nurses and quite a few men doctors. 1. Thomas Woolsey & Ruth (Baylis?)
    2. Wilford Whitaker
    3. To Woolsey Researchers: Marcella Massey sent the following: > Wilford, > I list the names of the children of Thomas Woolsey & > Ruth Bayless or Bailey as: > Richard Woolsey b. 1697 m. Sarah Fowler > Thomas Jr. b.ca 1729 m. Sarah Pierce (2nd wife) > Abigail > William b. 30 Jan 1687 m. Darcas Williamson > John > Johathon > > Does this coincide with your info? If so WHERE did you > get the facts? LDS files are not acceptable. I need info > for Colonial Dames XVII Century. > Please!!!!! > Marcella Massey in So. IN > To which I answered: Hi, Marcella: I really want to work with you on these families. I just don't have them "proven" at this time. Here is what I have on the family of Thomas Woolsey & Ruth (Baylis?): 1. Thomas Woolsey (s/o the Immigrant George Woolsey & Rebecca Cornell). He is not listed in the Dutch Reformed Church records of Nieuw Amsterdam but is on a list that was sent to me by Harry Macy, Editor NYGYB Record, 1 Jul 1998. (From the NY Public Library) "Thomas Woolsey b at Hempstead 10 Apr 1655, bapt Sunday 11 Apr 1655 at ye Englandlish Church by Mr. Denton" (This would be the church at Newtown (Middleburg) Long Island.) Thomas Woolsey followed some of his sons into Bedford, Westchester Co, NY. (bef 1720) Thomas Woolsey was buried in the Old Bedford Village Cemetery, Bedford, Westchester, NY. "Town of Bedford, CEMETERIES FHL #974.7277/B1 N2b. Vol. 8. p iv. "One such stone, preserved underground for perhaps a century, has recently been unearthed in the village graveyard. Its inscription reads: "1742 [next line illegible] Deceased Thomas Woolsey Born in the yeare 1656" This stone was evidently left behind when bodies of the Woolsey family were removed to the Bedford Union Cemetery in the Nineteenth Century." IBID: p. 393. "A gravestone for Thomas Woolsey, dug up in the Old Bedford Cemetery in 1976 bears the dates 1656-1742." >From at least two deed records in Jamaica, Long Island, we know that Thomas Woolsey's wife was named RUTH and that they both could write their names. I have the following, again from Harry Macy: [Op.Cit.: "You asked if I had any further information on Ruth bailey or baylis, who md Thomas Woolsey. My colleague Henry Hoff is descended from this couple (I think through a dau) and has done research on them. He says there is no question Thomas' wife was named Ruth, but he never found any proof that she was Ruth Bailey, although he thinks that is a good possibility. John(1) Baylis of Jamaica did have a dau Ruth who was unmarried when he made his will in 1682 [Legacies to daus Ruth & Rebecca Baylis]. As most of her sisters were married by that time, she probably was also close to marriageable age. Henry says there is a marriage date of 11 Jan 1684 that has been quoted for Thomas and Ruth, but he has no idea where it came from. [That reminds www of the 27 Oct 1610 date for the birth of our Immigrant ancestor George Woolsey, no one knows from whence it came.] There are no Jamaica church records for this period." Note by www: This would also apply to the dates given for the births of the children of Thomas Woolsey and Ruth (Baylis?). Jamaica church records for this period have not been found, although some of the dates are from headstones. Thomas Woolsey is also named in the will of his father, written in 1791 and proved 1798 in Jamaica. "2nd item: I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Thomas Wolsey all ye fifteen acre lott of land lying to ye westward of Anthony Walters home lott in Jamaica afor said to have and to hold ye said lott of land all ye appurtenances there unto being to him ye said Thomas Wolsey, his heirs and assigns to ye only proper use, benefitt and behoof of him ye said Thomas Wolsey, his heirs and assigns for ever." (This was part of the land in Jamaica that Thomas and his wife Ruth sold.) Children of Thomas Woolsey and Ruth (Baylis?): 1. Thomas Woolsey, Jr. He is given a birth date of Dec 1684 at Jamaica, Long Island. It is not known where that date comes from. He is listed in most of the early family histories, but no documentation has been found. He is probably the Thomas Woolsey buried before 1721 in Bedford. Unmarried as far as known. 2. Abigail Woolsey, b 1685 (again no documentation for this date) at Jamaica; buried 4 Apr 1716, in the old Jamaica Cemetery (Probably where George, the Immigrant and his wife Rebecca are also buried.) This burial record comes from the Register Book of Jamaica kept by Rev. Thomas Poyer, (who also preached the funeral sermon for Rebecca, above), p. 287: "Abigail ye Daughter of Thos & Ruth Woolsey 4 Apr 1716". The next four children are named in a remarkable deed (Original p. 52-3) given 16 Jul 1740 by Thomas Woolsey. Ruth is not mentioned and probably died 1739. 3. William Woolsey b 30 Jan 1687 (again not known where date comes from) at Jamaica, Long Island. He died 7 Mar 1771 at Bedford and was buried in the Old Bedford Cemetery, removed to Bedford Union Cemetery, 1976. He married in Jamaica and is recorded in the old Register, p. 278. "Wm Woolsey & Derica Williamson of Jamaica at Jamaica 4 Jan 1711/12 - Published. (This may not be the date of marriage, but the date of one of the three bans published.) (Derica in the Dutch for Dorcas, or Dorothy) He is named in the above deed as " . . . to my son William Woollseys land . . . .". Willliam Woolsey was earlier named in a Deed (G:58-8) given 12 Jan 1729/30 by Thomas Woolsey of Bedford, Westchester, with the "consent of wife Ruth, and sons William, Jonathan, Richard, and John Woolsey) sold to Henry Dusenbury of Rye, yeoman, for 105 pounds, NY money." 4. John Woolsey b 1691 Jamaica, d Nov 1751 at Bedford, bur Old Cemetery, Bedford. John Woolsey is named in his father's 1730 Deed and in the 1740 Deed. John Woolsey also names his brothers William, Jonathan and Richard in his will. He also names his wife Sarah (Woolsey?) and, evidently, his only child, his son Gilbert Woolsey. 5. Jonathan Woolsey, b 1695, Jamaica, d 1754, in Marlboro, Ulster Co, NY and is buried in the Riverview Cemetery there. He is also in the Deeds above. His wife was named Abigail. They had only one child identified: a son John Woolsey. 6. Richard Woolsey "a farmer", b 1697, Jamaica, d 21 Apr 1779 (C.Meech Woolsey gives the death date as 1777, but must be in error here as we find him later than 1777 and his headstone gives the date as 1779. He is buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Marlborough, Ulster Co, NY. He married in Jamaica (just before leaving for Bedford) on 24 Jan 1718 to Sarah Fowler. They had 12 children. He is also in the above Deeds. These are the children of record which have been "proved". More work needs to be done, and I am "hurrying as fast as I can." There is a girl Deborah Woolsey b bet 1700-1710 at Newtown, Long Island, md 5 Jan 1730 at Newtown, to Thomas Lawrence, who belongs in here somewhere, possibly not a daughter of Thomas and Ruth, but possibly. ?? Now, just a word about Thomas Woolsey who md Sarah Pierce - He is not a son of Thomas and Ruth, but rather a son of Richard Woolsey and Sarah Fowler. In Richard Woolsey's will he is named as "eldest son Thomas". This is the Reverend (Baptist) Thomas Woolsey of Westchester, Ulster Counties, New York, to Washington County, Virginia, before 1771. Some researchers have him marrying twice : 1) Sarah _______, who is the mother of his children and 2) Sarah Pierce. The research I have done indicates, but not conclusively, that he may have only md once, and Sarah Pierce is the mother of his children. Rev. Thomas Woolsey and Sarah (Pierce?) settled at "St. Clair's Bottoms (Sinclair's Bottoms), on the South Fork of the Holstein River in that part of Washington County, Virginia, that became Smythe County, Virginia. He had many land transactions on the South and Middle Forks of the Holstein and married about 80 couples (I forget the #) in Washington County, Virginia. He left a will in Smythe County, Virginia, but only names a son Zephaniah. His son Richard Woolsey and Richard's wife "Ann" (Nancy Plumstead) were witnesses to the will. Well, Marcella, does that help? Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

    3. I'm trying to uncover more about Andrew Woolsey, since I think he might be the father of George Woolsey (1851-1906) my great-great-grandfather. I believe he was one of the Greene County, TN Woolseys who migrated to Missouri. He was in Pierce Twp, Lawrence County on the 1870 census and died in St. Louis in 1897. I believe I've found him in the Missouri State Gazetteer and Business Directory (R.L. Polk and Co, Detroit and St. Louis), both the 1879-80 directory and 1885-6 directory. They list him as a physician in Granby, Newton County, Missouri. - Heather

    1. Amsterdam, Holland Shipping Lists:
    2. Wilford Whitaker
    3. To all interested Woolsey Researchers: I have been spending some time researching the Dutch West Indies Company and records in New Amsterdam concerning the Dutch before 1664 (the date the English "captured" New Amsterdam (New York) from the Dutch. I found reference to a thesis by Jaaps Jacobs of old Amsterdam, Holland, in which he named the ships coming from Amsterdam to New Amsterdam. Finally, found him at a museum in Amsterdam and then found his lists on-line. He's working on a larger work to encompass shipping lists, etc. I found the following in the Museum of Shipping in Amsterdam: !ON-LINE: Scheepvaartmuseum Amsterdam : Mi-94-0329. Henry WOLSEY BAYFIELD Sailing directions for the Gulf and River of St. Lawrence. 1837. Hydrographic Office, Admiralty. London, England. English language. Pagination VIII, 276 p. : 25 cm. Inventory No. 1993.2024. Navigation. Previously I had found the following reference: !ON-LINE: Rootsweb.com 29 Mar 2000. CEMETERIES. Old Protestant Burying Ground, Elm Ave Cemetery, Prince Edward Island. (Canada) Capt. Henry Wolsey Bayfield - Hydrographic Survey. [n.d.] Probably no connection, but just shows what happens when one keeps turning over "rocks" and keeps looking. Those ship lists are good, but unfortunately, they seldom include the names of the passengers. They give the name of the ship and the captain, the date sailed from Amsterdam and arrived in New Amsterdam, with the notation only of a number of "freights" (passengers), like "30 passengers", etc. Well, I'll keep looking. Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

    1. Leander Woolsey - Jayhawkers to CA - 1849
    2. Wilford Whitaker
    3. To interested Woolsey researchers: I have always been interested in the 49's of California. I thought the following was interesting: Does anyone know of Leander Woolsey - as follows: !ON-LINE: Rootsweb.com. 29 Mar 2000. Knox County, Illinois "Jayhawkers" to California 1849. Woolsey, Leander, From Knoxville, IL. b Ashtabula, Ohio 18 Jun 1828, died at Oakland, CA 8 Sep 1881 or 7 Oct 1881. The Jayhawkers were a group of young men from Galesburg area, their name was taken from their initiation, each candidate for the trip had to pass a Courage test (or idiocy test) by having a pinch of flesh "gyped" from his body, without flinching. They left Galesburg 5 Apr 1849 for the California goldfields. As they traveled west they often were accompanied by other groups. About 250 miles south of Salt Lake City, they met a group of Mormons who told them there was a shorter route. Many of the larger groups felt this was too dangerous but the Jayhawkers went on. They went through Death Valley and did lose some of their members to death. Luther Abijah Richards called "Little Deacon" did find a spring and the group finally after much hardship came through the San Francisquito Canyon into the Santa Clara Valley. A rancher there fed them even after they killed one of! his cattle to eat and they went on to the Gold Fields withoout notable success. A number of them settled around San Jose, California and some went back to Illinois. They had a Reunion every February 4th as long as any of them were alive, sometimes in the midwest, sometimes in California. The last Jayhawker died in 1921. Among them: Leander Woolsey.

I also did not list any authors published after the early 1900's. Maybe Wilford Whitaker knows of some of these authors. Love to all the Woolsey descendants, Barbara Kalin Samardich

    3. To any interested Woolsey researchers: I received an interesting post from Orin R. Wells of the Wells Family Association concerning the following: "A few days ago you posted the following to the Woolsey list. I am not a member of the list, but I trap anything with Wells in it. I am wondering if you have any more detail on this person? [I have over 40 individuals who have the first name Woolsey (Wolsey) or middle name Woolsey. I thought you may be interested in them and if anyone can add to any of these, it would be appreciated. Recognizing that often names were given because of respect, I think that a lot of these are descended from the Woolseys through a daughter, so that is my interest. WOOLSEY FIRST NAMES Wells, Woolsey B. of Vigo Co, IN] " I don't know if I can identify this person, but I do know of a Woolesy Wells b: Cir 1805 in MA who was in the 1850 census in Defiance Co, Ohio. He was actually named Melancthon Woolsey Welles and had a son born 1848 by the same name. The name in this family came from the following: Noah Wells, born 25 Sep 1718 in Colchester, New London Co., CT and died 31 Dec 1776;.married Abigail Woolsey 17 Sep 1751. Their son Melancthon Wells wasborn 06 Dec 1770 and married Abigail Buell. I have not been able to put the last piece in place linking THIS Melancthon with Melancthon Woolsey Welles b: 1805, but I am fairly certain this is what we will eventually find. Orin R. You will notice from the following record that the son of Noah Wells and Abigail Woolsey was named Melancthon WOOLSEY Wells from the following record. I only had one dau for Melancthon Woolsey Wells and Abigail Buell. It appears there may be three generations of Melancthon Woolsey Wells here. Abigail Woolsey's brother was named Melancthon Taylor Woolsey, children of Rev. Benjamin Woolsey and Abigail Taylor. TOWN: Stamford, Fairfield Co, CT. Town Clerk. Town records 1640-1806.
