To Edith Pimentel and interested Woolsey researchers: James Woolsey is not a common Woolsey name, but I do have several early James, all from New York. There is also an early James WOOSLEY, wife Elizabeth, born in Virginia, but is of a different family. 1. James Woolsey b abt 1766 of Marlborough, Ulster, New York, s/o Rev Henry Woolsey & Abigail Woolsey/Wright - may have md Abigail Higgins and had a son John P. Woolsey. 2. James Woolsey b abt 1772, Hillsdale Town, Columbia Co., NY s/o Rev Richard Woolsey and Ann Fuller. Nothing further. "went South" 3. James Woolsey b 1798, d 1876 - s/o Josiah Woolsey & Abigail Lyon. All in New York. 4. James Woolsey b 1787, NY, s/o Daniel Woolsey & Ann Halstead. 5. James Woolsey b 1776, NY, d 1857, Newburgh, Orange, NY, s/o William Woolsey & Abigail Northrup, md 1799 Abigail Lockwood. 13 Children, all b NY 6. James Woolsey - 1811 - in Lincoln Co., KY 7. James Lloyd Woolsey b 1788 of Plattsburg, Clinton Co., NY s/o Melancthon Lloyd Woolsey & Alida Livingston. md Roxanna Ackerman. 10 children, all in NY. 8. James Woolsey, 1830 Washington Co., MO census, b 1780-1790 Also here is Thomas Woolsey, b 1790-1800. Thomas Woolsey was an early settler of Missouri (bef 1812). 9. James Woolsey, jury duty 1821 in Lawrence Co., TN with Samuel Woolsey and Daniel Woolsey. 10. James Woolsey, War of 1812 - Col. McNair's command, in Missouri Militia, and Lt. James Woolsey, Col Ashley's command, Mounted Missouri Militia. 11. J. (ames) Woolsey, b 1776, NY or NC, in 1850 census of Crawford Co., Missouri. It's possible that the KY, TN & MO James Woolseys are one and the same. Any suggestions and additions would be greatly appreciated. Wilford W. Whitaker

Hi Edith, > In hopes this will be of help to someone: > WOOLSEY burials taken from the “Cemetery Records of Crawford Co., MO. > Complied by Helen Marie Wright, 1998.” Thanks for the SUPER posting and welcome to the list! Check out my AOL page. There's also a WOOLSEY Street in Delavan, WI. I'm standing under the street sign. It was named after one of my first cousins, once removed, who was aboard the U. S. S. To Edith Pimentel & interested Woolsey researchers: Thank you for submitting your James Woolsey data to the WOOLSEY List. This is the type of data that we need to help straighten out the Missouri WOOLSEY families. I only have one James WOOLSEY born that early in New York who may fit into this family. 1. James Woolsey b 1772 (approx. date) in Hillsdale Town, Columbia Co., New York, son of the Reverend Richard Woolsey, Jr. & Ann Fuller. (Rev. Richard Woolsey, Jr. was the son of Richard Woolsey & Sarah Fowler). The information I have on James Woolsey was from Robert M. Woolsey and stated that James Woolsey "WENT SOUTH"! I have no further information on James Woolsey in New York. 2. There is a James Woolsey in 1811 in "Early Kentucky Households", 1:83. Also a John Woolsey. 3. James Woolsey on Jury Duty in 1821 in Lawrence Co., Tennesse, with Samuel Woolsey & Daniel Woolsey. 4. James Woolsey in War of 1812 - Col. McNair's command, Missour Militia. (You might want to check pension records.) 5. Lt. James Woolsey in War of 1812 - Col. Ashley's command, Mounted Missouri Militia. (Probably the same James as above.) 6. James Woolsey may have been an early settler of Missouri with Thomas Woolsey (who md Milly & Rebecca). 7. Abigail Woolsey b abt 1823 md 1845 in Crawford Co., Mo to B. J. Pettyjohn. (Probably one of the older daughters. See 1830 census, Washington Co., Harmony Twp., Missouri) 8. I have an Elizabeth Pyatt b 1841 md 1861 in Fayette Co., Illinois to J. Yarborough. I have none with spelling Piett or Piatt. 9. I would be interested in the Woolsey burials in Crawford Co., MO. 10. Yes, it is quite possible that James Woolsey, the elder, was born in New York State, as almost all of the Woolseys in the West originated in New York state. He could have come with cousins, etc. 11. The reasons for coming West are almost as many as there are immigrants, but the lure of owning their own land was as strong as anything else. 12. Please keep in contact. We need this information to make our Woolsey family more complete. Thank you for your help and interest. Wilford W. Whitaker

To all interested Woolsey researchers: The Missouri Woolsey families are very difficult to follow and need much more research. It is my hope that some of you who are related to the Woolsey families there will seek more census records, obituaries, estate files and marriages, etc. to help define these families more clearly. In regard to the different suggestions re: Abigail Woolsey who md William Zuck: 1. There is nothing I have found that would indicate that Abigail is a dau of Zephaniah Woolsey and Delilah Masoner. In research, however, one must start with a premise and then try to prove or disprove it, so Zephaniah Woolsey and Delilah Masoner must remain as possibles. 2. Abigail Woolsey, d/o Nehemiah and Mary Ruth Curtis. Again this is a possibility, but I have a different connection for Abigail, d/o Nehemiah and Mary Ruth Curtis. Abigail, b abt 1822, md as his 2nd wife, Stephen Woolsey (s/o Gilbert Woolsey and Abigail Woolsey) (These families really become convoluted.) Abigail had at least four children by Stephen Woolsey so I don't think she is a possibility. 3. At first glance, Abigail Woolsey, d/o of Jeremiah Woolsey and Polly (the Ancestral File has Mary Stephens, but I haven't proved that) seems to be the best possibility. The ages are about the same. However, Abigail Woolsey, d/o Jeremiah Woolsey shows up in the 1850 census of Fentress Co., TN and in the 1860 census of Fentress County, TN, as Abigail Woolsey in Mary Woolsey's (and George Woolsey, her brother's) family. So, I think we can rule out Jeremiah Woolsey as her father, although I don't have a marriage for this Abigail Woolsey. 4. Which leaves us where we started. I don't know the parents of Abigail Woolsey who md Wm Lafayette Zuck. According to the records sent to us, Abigail Woolsey md William Zuck in 1848 and so should appear in 1850 and 1860 censuses under his family. That would be the first place I would look. Where were the Zucks in the Census years? Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

AHHHHHH Chuck, Here I thought I was finally getting my records in order and here I go again <lol lol> I show this Abigail as a d/o Nehemiah and Mary Ruth (CURTIS) WOOLSEY married to Stephen Marion Woolsey b. 7 Oct 1813 Greene County, TN. Now I do have where I got the information but ----. Now what do I do with Stephen and his Abigail? I was reading the new released book "History and Families of DeSoto County, MS" and noted to Woolsey names, I had not seen before. Would anyone have any ideas of who they might be? 1. Ina Belle (Woolsey) Crouch, wife of Auzie Paul Crouch of Marshall County. They had a daughter Ruth Crouch. 2. Katie Bolton Woolsey, and her daughter Mary, were original charter members of the Horn Lake Baptist Church. Just curious to see if they fit in my James Woolsey/Elizabeth Stone Woolsey line. Hello John, Thank you for the greetings. I live in Houston, TX, USA. I have many John Woolsey ancestors like John 2nd, John III, there is John Sr., and John Jr., Johnny and then just John. We even have some John's that use their nickname "Jack" now I still have that one to figure out. Supposedly we decend from George Joris Woolsey who was born at Yarmouth, Isle of Wright, England. Here in Texas we have many John's but they don't add to the name or take way from it like it's Juan Cantu Gonzales or Gonzales Juan Cantu or maybe even Cantu Gonzales Juan. If you get up today and don't like you name just change it around until it suits you. I love it. So glad to have you on the list and maybe you can help us with our English Woolsey's. Hello List Members, A Happy & Blessed New Year to you all! I hope your holidays were filled with many happy and meaningful memories. I read on another list that I belong to, that the 2000 Census forms should be in the mail by April 1st. Even though I didn't start doing genealogy until 1991, I've done my part in the past, but I fully intend to be on this one.......even if I have to write the Census Bureau personally.
