He took up quite a number of acres on both sides of the South Fork of the Holsten River, and settled near what is known today as Sinclair's Bottoms. They built a stone church there where he preached and visited the surrounding areas. It is good to hear from you. Thank you for responding. Let's keep in touch. Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

There is some uncertainty about whether I have the children assigned to the correct parents, however. Merritt

    3. To all interested Woolsey Researchers: There is a site on-line that the BLM has made available and many land records are available. Some states even have a copy of the original that one could down load. I have checked some of them and they look very accurate and interesting. To see this site, click on the following: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/search.asp?s=1&ts=false (I think that will get you in. You may have to type it in.) Check it out. For example, Fethias Woolsey, Mathias Woolsey and Margaret Woolsey are patentees of 120 acres in Mendocino County, CA 30 Jun 1879. Who would have thought they would show up in CA? 1. James Woolsey
    2. Wilford W. Whitaker
    3. To Edith Pimentel & interested Woolsey researchers: I spent seven hours Monday in the FHL center and researched these Washington Co., Crawford Co. and Franklin Co., MO records. In HISTORY OF CRAWFORD COUNTY, MISSOURI.1987. FHL #977.862 D3c I found the following: p. 403. JAMES "JIM" WOOLSEY. Jim Woolsey was a prominent farmer, bricklayer and carpenter of the Steelville area. We believe he helped to build the old rock jail and the old Presbyterian Church. He was born in 1834 or 1835 in Washington Co., MO. His father was born in New York and was reported to have lived to abt 102 years old. Jim's mother was born in Tennessee. // Jim Woolsey and Sarah Pyatt were married in Steelville, MO, on 1 Dec 1859. Sarah born in MO in 1839, but here parents were born in Tennessee. Her father didn't return from the Civil War, then her mother Avis married her husband's brother Elijah Pyatt. Her (Sarah's) brothers were Daniel, William and John and at least one sister. // Jim Woolsey's sisters were Bethena who married William N. Hopkins in 1852, Catharine who married John Nichols 30 Jan 1860. Linda Abigail, and Amy who married a Howard. // Children born to Jim and Sarah Woolsey were: William, Jeff, Ferd, Frank, John (md Lydia Harmon and father of the late Johnny Woolsey), Ava Clara (8 Aug-1872 - 16 Jul 1941) md "Ike" Cassady in 1890, Ida md Ed Withrow, Florence md a Coleman, and Susie md 1) Sam Housewright 2) Tim Lakin. Sons Jeff, Ferd, and Frank moved to Arkansas and there are many descendants there. // There was a Woolsey School near the old homeplace which was somewhere near the Midland Church of today - south on Highway 19 and then east on Woolsey Road. // Sarah died in 1910 the home of her daughter Ava Cassady, and Jim died in 1922. Both are buried at Martin Cemetery near Cherryville. Also: !HISTORY: HISTORY OF CRAWFORD COUNTY, MISSOURI 1821-1987. 1987. FHL #977.862 D3c. p. 403. JOHN and IRMA WOOLSEY. John Jiles Woolsey was born in Steelville, MO, 17 Mar 1904 to John Woolsey and Lydia Ann (Harmon) Woolsey. Lydia Ann had come over to this country on a boat from Germany at the age of three and her family lived in Virginia before moving to Steelville. They had three children: John, Jr., Lillie and Ethel. Irma Elizabeth housewright was born in Steelville, MO 3 Sep 1909 to the union of Sanford Housewright and Lizzie Reynolds. // On 9 Sep 1925 John Woolsey and Irma Housewrighty were md at the home of Rev Todd in Steelville, MO. Three children were born, Mary Lou, Shirley Jean and John Dale. Dr. Parker delivered all three at their home place, in Steelville. // While small Mary Lou and Shirley attended the old Woolsey School, which their grandpa Woolsey helped build. Mary Thurman, a friend of the family, was their teacher. They attended Pleasant View School on Highway 19, for a short while. As small children we can remember going into town on Saturdays and getting a bag of candy. Also we remember going to Jonas Drug Store and buying ice cream called a laddie bar and if you got one with pink ice cream instead of white you recived another one free. We couldn't wait to bite into the bar to see what color it was. // John worked on the WPA while young, also with the highway department for many years before moving to St. Louis. After numerous jobs John formed his own Asphalt Paving Company, Woolsey Const. Co. // Mary Lou md Norman West from Leasburg, MO and they have one son, Larry Notice there was a Catherine Woolsey who md John Nichols in 1860. I found the following in Crawford County PROBATE COURT, 1835-1878. FHL film #914159. E:102. Estate of John W. & Preston R. Nickols, minors 7 Mar 1872 - Balinda Woolsey apptd Curator of Estate. E:103. order of sale of R. E. Lots 1 & 2 block 19 in Steelville, Crawford Co., MO, for above. E:144. 2 Sep 1872 - Report of Sale - see DEEDS O:446. DEEDS OF CRAWFORD CO, MO. FHL film#914719. 2 Sep 1872. Probate Court of Crawford - May Term - 1872. On petition of Balinda Woolsey grdn of John W. & Preston Nichols, minors, to sell Real Estate for education etc. to S. J. Martin for $52. Appraised by R. W. Dunlap, W. W. Mattax & J. W. Jamison - Deed to S. J. Martin - land in Crawford Co. - Lots 1 & 2 in Block 19 in town of Steelsville. Balinda Woolsey, grdn. - Judge Wm. W. Robinson, Judge of Probate. Filed 3 Sep 1872 & Recorded 5 Sep 1872 by R. W. Dunlap, Recorder. It appears that Catharine Woolsey md John Nichols and they had the two minor children listed above and Catharine or perhaps both had died by 1872 and Catharine's sister Balinda was named guardian for the minor children, John W. & Preston Nichols. Enough for now. Wilford W. Whitaker

I found the following THOMAS marriages: p. 46. 5 Mar 1787 John Knox & Elizabeth Thomas p. 72. 23 Sep 1787 Lewis Thomas & Elizabeth Widner p. 66. 4 Sep 1788 Samuel Sprauls & Susanna Thomas Rev. Thomas Woolsey lived on the South Fork of the Holston River, in Washington Co., (now Symthe Co.), VA. at a place that still appears on the maps as Sinclair Bottoms, where there was a stone church, I believe a Primitive Baptist Church. Descendants moved to KY, IN, TN, IL, etc. Some moved to Greene County, TN. As I am "documenting" the whole family, I am interested in all WOOLSEYS anywhere. Thank you again. >Wilford W. 3. To Pat, of Lawrence Co., TN, Norb Woolsey and interested researchers: In a message dated 29 Jan 2000, Norb asks if anyone has information on Ada Woolsey, as prompted by a query by Pat. of Lawrence Co., TN, 28 Jan 2000 as follows: < Have you come across an Ada Woolsey who married Homer L. Gibson? She was born 9 Nov 1891 and died 10 Jul 1969. I don't know who her parents were. The Rev. Euphrates Boucher wrote "The Biographies of the eight children of George & Mary Hopkins Woolsey" in which he metions Ada Woolsey and her line back to George Woolsey & Mary Hopkins. I have this 19 page biography and it is available with pedigree chart and family group sheets for $25.00. I am saving this money to apply toward Early English research in Norfolk County, England. (There are over 80 Woolsey wills from 1350 to 1600 in Norfolk County, England, alone). It would be great working with you on this family. Sincerely yours, Wilford W. James Woolsey, jury duty 1821 in Lawrence Co., TN with Samuel Woolsey and Daniel Woolsey. >> Hi Wilford, it good to see your back and the list coming to life again. You mentioned James Woolsey on jury duty in 1821 in Lawrence C., TN, with Samuel and Daniel Woolsey. What would have been his age? As you probably recall we had discussed the possiblity of my possible James Woolsey, as a son to Samuel Woolsey and Cassandra Gilbird(Gilbert) as being the lost one that married Elizabeth Stone and moved to MS. His birthdate was 22 November 1813, in Lawrence Co., TN, so I don't believe he would have been old enough for jury duty. Do you have ideas on who the James Woolsey was that was on Jury duty, and his age? Maybe he is the James I am looking for! Would the Samuel on Jury duty be the same Samuel that may be the father of the James I am looking for? I never did hear back from the young lady in UT, who submitted this information supposedly from the Bible Pages of an Alma Woolsey, did you? Best regards, Norb Woolsey Tucson

    3. To Rhonda Friedman: Welcome to the Woolsey list. If only all inquiries were as easy as this to connect!! Martha P. Woolsey, the d/o Wm. Harrison Woolsey & Sarah Huffman, descends from the Rev. Thomas Woolsey through his son George Woolsey who md Mary Hopkins. I have the 20 pp "Descendants of the Eight Children of George Woolsey & Mary Hopkins" by the Rev. Ephrates Boucher, which I obtained two summers ago researching in the New York Bio. & Gen. Society library in New York. Also I have the pedigree chart from Martha P. back to the immigrant ancestor George Woolsey, 1616-1698, in New Amsterdam, New York. And family group sheets from Rev. Thomas Woolsey through Martha P. Because I am raising money to apply towards early English Research (bef 1600) in Norfolk County, England, on the Woolsey line, I have asked that people send a contribution of $25 for the above information. (or whatever one can afford). Our immigrant ancestor George Woolsey was christened 1616 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, and lived there and in Rotterdam, Holland, and in New Amsterdam, New York. I know who his parents are and his grandparents. There are over 80 Woolsey wills between 1350 and 1600 in Norfolk County, England, that need to be read and although I can read the early English down to about 1600, I need help before that. Please keep in touch. Wilford W. Whitaker 6094 Glenoaks Murray, UT 84107-7761 801 263 0432
