    1. Micheal Wolford
    2. Hi! To all of you who are researching the Wolfords of Western PA, particularly, Michael Wolford of Shade Twp., Somerset Co., I recently learned something interesting that may end up giving us the answer to the question, Was Michael born in PA or MD? I was recently sent the following information from the Rev. Pension Files by a professional genealogist. Michael Woolford (also shown as Wolford) Enlisted 15 May 1777 in Cpt. Griffith's Co. and Capt. Gray's Co., 3rd Maryland Regiment. Living in Somerset Co., PA in November 1815. His land warrant for 100 acres was delivered to the Honorable William Piper. He was also allowed land - 50 acres by Maryland and the land was t the west of Ft. Cumberland in Allegheny Co., MD. No family data. Affidavits were sworn by Andrew & Jcob Borenbile on Michael's behalf. Handwritten note says to see MD Archives, Book pages 35 and 490 - have no idea what that is about. Thomas was born January 10, 1755 in Dorchester Co., MD. Enrolled in Cpt. Edward Noll's Co. and William Richardson's Co., 5th MD Regiment. An iquiry to the file was made in 1925 by Mrs. Sarah E. Stuart, 204 N.Pierce St., Chestertown MD and another in 1925 by L. E. Hugnes of Mnneapolis, MN. Thomas died Oct. 8, 1841. Married to Elizabeth. Two children: Isabella Byns/Byus/Byers who died 9/12/1853 leaving a daughter, Eliabeth, issue. Son, Thomas is sole survivor in Novemer 1857 when he is petitioning for pension from his father. I posted the information on Thomas for contrast. Note that no birth information on Michael was included because none was available. Whereas for Thomas there was known birth information. Could this be because Michael wasn't born in MD? So then why would he enlist in the MD 3rd Regiment as stated above and also in his Rev. Pension file I received. I also received the following tidbit from another researcher from a different line of my family. "Some concerns Jake Sr's Rev War experience. However, there were 2 Jacob Moseses (sp?) in the Maryland 3rd regiment. It ties in with, I believe, the fact that there was a Jacob Moses in Chester Co." This researcher believes that though our common ancestor Jacob Moses was born in Chester Co. he ended up in the Maryland 3rd Regiments with bounty land in Somerset Co., PA. Then she went on to explain... "It's really interesting you mention another Pennsylvanian who was in the Maryland 3rd regiment. Once, a few years ago, I swear I saw a referrence in a Pennsylvania Archive that the Pennsylvania Rangers of the Frontier (I think-but definitely some Pa unit) were transferred to the Maryland 3rd regiment. Unfortunately, that was before I wrote down any referrences. I was strictly flying by the seat of my pants, but do remember a feeling of "oh, that's how he ended up in a Maryland regiment." Could it be that our Michael ended up in a MD Regiment by transfer? Could he too have been originally from Chester Co. just like Jacob Moses? So, what do you think? Leigh Ann
