Hi janice and all Just got round to putting up my lot. Benjamin and Mary's son Jame baptised 24 Sep 1725 also Lydiard T. married Mary Tinson 19 Sep 1742 at Cholderton Their son James Woolford baptised 24 September 1725 married Grace Young 6th May 1751 Brinkworth Wilts. James and Grace's son John Woolford baptised 24 March 1760 married Mary Young at Wootton Bassett 21st December 1784 John and Mary's son William Woolford baptised 2nd September 1787 at Lydiard Tregoze married Ann Eatwell on 14th September 1787 at Wootton Bassett. William and Ann's daughter Mary Jane married john Coxhead which brings me to the Australian connection as this family came to Australia. Mary's brother Richard Woolford had been sent out for poaching but this is another story. I will check for other Woolford arrivals as I have noticed some not connected with my lot. Best wishes The other Janice Walsh
Folks, I tried posting this a few days ago. It came back to me from my ISP as undeliverable, which I do not understand. If this is a duplicate posting, I apologize. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello folks, This list is very quiet isn't it? I have found that the only way lists work is to post your interests. Maybe there will be a bite, maybe not. But it puts your interests out there. Don't wait for the other person to post. Personally, I am interested to find out who all of you are descended from. I live in the United States. My grandmother was Lily WOOLFORD and she came first to Canada in 1912, where she met and married a Gloucestershire man who had arrived in Canada two years before. They traveled up and down the eastern coastline until they settled in Middletown, Connecticut, where I was born. I never knew my grandmother as she died at the young age of 44, leaving three children. My Woolfords are from various parts of Wiltshire but mostly in Swindon and Lydiard Millicent. I still have cousins there and am in contact with them. I would like to hear about your ancestors and where they came from and what you are stuck on. So won't you think about posting? Hope to hear your stories soon. Janice WOOLFORD List Owner
Peter I want to thank you for these great suggestions. If anyone knows a *reasonable* researcher perhaps I can go that route. Yes, it would be wonderful for the membership to grow. My only suggestion there is to pass the knowledge of this list on to others you may have come in contact with who are also searching their WOOLFORD ancestors. I have been trying to get more members, but the task is not an easy one. I would like to get a "feel" for what the list members want from this list, but unless people tell me, I will never know. I do not want to sound like the proverbial broken record, but if you do not post this list will not work. You do not need to post your queries. Perhaps you knowledge of some great resource, or book or know something about the history of a village that the WOOLFORD may have lived, or occupations...anything goes here. Hope to hear you folks soon. Janice WOOLFORD List Owner
In a message dated 11/16/98 5:10:57 PM Eastern Standard Time, Peter.Lowe@Bigfoot.Com writes: << William WOOLFORD born 1803 in Shaw who married Harriet Tittcowl. >> Peter I have a William WOOLFORD who married a Harriet Tidcombe 15 November 1828 in Lydiard. Do you think perhaps your Tittcowl and the above Tidcombe are one in the same? My info comes from the I.G.I. index. I believe they are one in the same. I also have the following info. Woolfords of Shaw, hamlet of Lydiard Millicent William and Harriet WOOLFORD William-ag lab-Shaw Harriet- Alfred-bap. 23 Feb 1844 Daniel-bap. 23 Mar. 1845 Mary-bap. 17 Dec 1848 I also have a lot of info of Woolfords of Purton. There is also a great deal of info at the Wiltshire Family History Center that was deposited by the daughter of John Greenslade of whom I corresponded with until his death a couple of years ago. If it wasn't for this kindly gentleman I would never know what I know now about my Woolfords-he was a descendant of Woolfords as well. Now, Peter I have to find what connection you and I are! Janice
Janice wrote that her ancestors came from Shaw, Lydiard Millicient. Do you know the connection with William WOOLFORD born 1803 in Shaw who married Harriet Tittcowl. They had the following children: Charlotte (1829) Elizabeth (1832) William (1835) Eliza (1838) Ann Maria (1841) Alfred (1844) Daniel (1845-1909) [ I have a tree of his descendants from Edna O'Reilly] Mary (1851). I also have some charts of Woolfords from Ramsbury, Purton & other places in Berks & Wilts. Peter Lowe Hertford, England Peter.Lowe@Bigfoot.Com
You asked about sources to find siblings of your grandmother. This is not going to be easy. These sources might contain the information, but require quite some searching: a) 1891 Census b) Wills registered at Principal Probate Registry ( I have extracts for Woolford 1858-1917) c) Obituaries in Local Newspaper. Often in the period 1880-1940 these would include all the family, though of course only a fraction of people would have obituaries. d) Civil Registration Birth Indexes for WOOLFORD. Maybe someone has extracted these ? If more members joined the group and some have access to the registers maybe all Woolfords could be extracted. Town directories or electoral registers would nor really help. Peter Lowe Hertford, England
I have been searching for siblings for my grandmother, Lily Florence WOOLFORD, d.o. William George WOOLFORD and Blanche BECKETT Austin. My grandmother was born 17 September 1895 in Clapham, London on 9 Bournemouth Street. William George at the time was a Railway worker. Lily was raised by her grandmother, William's mother, Ellen WOOLFORD and her husband (not William's father) Robert Tyler for whatever reason. What kind of records can be checked to see if there were other children other than Lily? Keep in mind Blanche was married before to Henry Thomas Austin in St. Pancras, London. He died in 1888 (do not know if they had children together after seven years of marriage). William and Blanche were living in Nottingham on 14 Comyn Street, when she died 5 October 1917 (I have death certificate). Even though I have been doing research in England from afar for quite a few years I am still not familiar with the types of records that can be checked. The 1900 census is not available so what type of records can be had to learn if other children existed besides my grandmother? Do you have town directories that list members of households? How about obituary notices, do they get into any detail? Any help you folks can give would be greatly appreciated. I have been searching on and off for some years without making to much headway on this. Also, how about records for the period of 1881-1888 when Blanche was married to Henry? Thanks for any thoughts, ideas you can give. Janice List Owner

I have just joined the WOOLFORD mailing list, but as yet have received no messages. My interest is through some ancestors of my wife, descended from William Hayden WOOLFORD who was baptized in 1785 in Woolston, Uffington, illegitimate son of Ann WOOLFORD. William moved to Didcot, Berkshire marrying there Mary LEY in 1808, and dying there in 1865. They had at least 11 children including : Joseph (died 1878 in London) John (bap 1814) who married Amelia BATES in 1841 and lived in London Thomas (bap 1816) mar. Elizabeth (born in Ulverston) Abraham (bap 1818) lived in Harwell & Uxbridge. Married Anne NEWTON in 1843. Benjamin (bap 1822) lived London. Married Caroline Hannah SILK, with at least 8 children. [My wife's ancestors] Richard (bap 1824) mar. Maria. Lived in Edmonton in 1881. Henry (1827-1872) lived London. Married to Charlotte Robert (bap 1829). Lived in Portsea in 1851 I have more details of some of these and their descendants. Also I have been in correspondence with others interested in Woolford from Berks, Wilts, Bucks etc. I would be pleased to correspond with others with an interest in this family. Well, I guess everyone is waiting for someone to post first. So as your list owner, guess it's up to me! The membership list is very small. Please, if you know someone who is researching this name, pass the knowledge on that there is a list out there! If you have any connections, let me know. And if you live in the vicinity of Lydiard Millicent, stop by and say hello to my cousin John and his wife Beryl! ------------------------------------------------------------------- My Woolford Line Lily Florence WOOLFORD, b. 17 September 1895, Clapham, S.
