His parents were Joseph Woolford and Martha Iles. His convict indent states that he left a wife (Elizabeth from Chippenham) and 7 children behind. I am trying to establish where they moved to from Purton because the only marriage record I can find for a Robert and Elizabeth was an Elizabeth Clifford from Eisey (I have mislaid the IGI record for the moment) In the vital records index posted today i see two births to an Elizabeth and Robert Woolford, both at Purton (Emanuel and Joseph). At the time of his capture for sheep stealing he was living somewhere a place called Tytherton Lucas in the Parish of Chippenham as the offence was committed here at the farm of a Mr Ferris. The records of his place of abode are nearly impossible to read but look like Slumley (or Stanley?) in the Parish of Chippenham. He was tried at Devizes and committed in 1846 I am writing a small book and would love to be able to put in a bit more "meat" of his past. I need to establish if Elizabeth Clifford was his wife and also records of birth or christenings for the children. Joseph and Martha (my Robert's parents) began their family soon after marriage and had three children in six years and then seem to fade out of existence. One presumes that the migration which was to lead to Robert being elsewhere in Wiltshire had started and taken him with it. If I can find his Elizabeth and their children it will give me an idea of what happened to them after Robert was transported. He married out here in Van Dieman's Land and had 7 more children! I am interested in the brothers of my great-great-grandmother Ellen WOOLFORD. They were Mark WOOLFORD, b/bap 24 December 1843, Lydiard Millicent and Eli WOOLFORD, b/bap 17 June 1845, Lydiard Millicent Does anyone have them in their family tree? Did they marry? Any help appreciated. Also, on the 1861 census for Lydiard Millicent, "Street", lists another sister as well, Martha WOOLFORD, age 8, b. Lydiard Millicent and also a George WOOLFORD, age 12. On the 1851, 61 there is not an Eli listed at all, yet parish registers have him as a son of George WOOLFORD and Mary Ann PINNELL. thanks Janice

Janice sent me an extract from the 1881 census mentioning a George Tyler born at Woolstone, Berks whose family lived at Lydiard Millicent in the 1870s and whose son married Ellen Woolford. This interested me as my Woolford branch (and that of Clifford Walters) come from Woolstone, which together with Baulking are part of Uffington in Berks. There are several Woolford families there and I have put below one which seems to connect with Lydiard Millicent. Anyone spot any connections ? Apologies for the abbreviations etc. As Woolstone/Uffington & Lydiard Millicent are not very close geograohically, it certainly makes me think the Uffington & Lydiard families are really all one. The daughter of Ellen WOOLFORD was born in 1877 and I have her birth certificate which *does* not list her father-a line goes through that block which requires his name. I have the 1881 census for Lydiard Millicent "the Green" and lists the following: George WOOLFORD-57-Butcher-Lydiard Millicent Mary Ann " -60- -Brinkworth William George-grandson-14-GWR general laborer-Lydiard Millicent Edwin G. LARGE-border-4-Lydiard Millicent Ellen WOOLFORD-unmarried-30-Dressmaker-Lydiard Millicent Lily Mary WOOLFORD-daughter-3-New Swindon Lily Mary Ellen WOOLFORD was b. 27 October 1877 at 9 North Wilts Terrace in New Swindon, Wilts; she d. 7 March 1883 of diphtheria. Death certificate does not mention a father. I have my suspicions on what family line may be the father of Wm. George but I do not know if William and his sister Lily even shared the same father, or if they were different men. Also, on the 1881 census is the Tyler family "In The Butts" George TYLER-47-Farm Laborer-Woolstone, Berks. Elizabeth (STURMEY)-45-Wanborough, Wilts. Robert-14-Farm Laborer-Lydiard Millicent William-11-Scholar-Lydiard Millicent Ernest-4-Lydiard Millicent Charles Sturmey-65-Farm Laborer-Lydiard Millicent I mention this family as Ellen married above Robert who was a contemporary of her son William and 16 yrs her junior. Ellen and Robert raised my grandmother as their daughter-she didn't know the facts (that Ellen and Robert were not her parents but grandparents) until Ellen died in 1910. My grandmother also looked very much like Robert in later years. So now you know how convoluted this bit of history is! If I cannot find out the identity through birth/death certificates or Bastardy records, I doubt there is any hope at all and will have to be satisfied with conjecture. The Society of Genealogists in London has a transcript of at least part of the Lydiard Millicent Registers. I have never looked at it. In an old listing they have copies of the registers up to 1840. Their Web site may have a more up-to-date listing. The original parish registers are at the Wilts Record Office in Towbridge. I don't think you can find any Bastardy records as late as 1867 to find the father of searching for the father to William George WOOLFORD, son of Ellen WOOLFORD. Have you checked the birth certificate of the sister ? Who does the 1871 census show in the household of Ellen Woolford ? Peter Lowe

Peter Your Lydiard Tregoze posting was a big help to me I have been able to add to my family tree for Woolfords. I think John Young Woolford is the first born of my John Woolford and Mary Young married 21 December 1784 at Wootton Bassett. I don't have a baptism for him probably baptised in the mother's parish perhaps Wootton Bassett. the first child I hd was William Bap. Peter I want to thank you for taking the time to post this to the list. It is greatly appreciated! Are you aware of records such as these for Lydiard Millicent? I am still searching for the father to my ancestor William George WOOLFORD, born out of wedlock to Ellen WOOLFORD (daughter of George WOOLFORD and Mary Ann Pinnell). I have his birth certificate, but it does not name father. I know there are Bastardy records, but do not know where to search for them. William George was born 7 March 1867 in Shaw, Lydiard Millicent. He also had a sister born out of wedlock named Lily Mary Ellen, but she died in 1877 of diphtheria. My maternal grandmother was Eugenie Goodwin, nee WOOLFORD, the daughter of Caroline Hannah SILK and Benjamin WOOLFORD. They were married Aspley Guise in Bedfordshire April 29th 1846 and were, I suspect, a mismatched pair socially.On their marriage certificate she signed her name but he made his mark.The SILKS were a well to do family from Cambridgeshire and Essex. My grandmother was born on the 7th December 1858 at 3, Williams Mews, Marylebone. These WOOLFORDS, that is, my great grandfather and his family, came from the Didcot area of Berkshire. However, there seems to have been quite a group of them in the St Pancras area of London later in the century, engaged in the greengrocery and coal merchant trades - the former possibly deriving from their agricultural associations in Berkshire. I would have thought that there must still be a fair number of WOOLFORDS about in this part of London still, with whom I would have a familial association and, of course, in Berkshire, too. Hi all, I see that both Janices are related to Lydiard Tregooze/Lydiard Millicent Woolfords. These villages have probably the largest conentration of Woolfords. How far are we at working out how they are all interrelated ? Although I have no known connection (as yet)with these families, I do have some information about them. My notes include transcript of Woolfords from Baptisms, Marriages & Burials 1666-1967 from Lydiard Tregooze, which I guess the Janices already have. Let me know if anyone wants things looked up in them. In 1862 there was an Administration of the estate of Thomas Young Woolford of Lydiard Tregooze who died 16 May 1862 (age 50) to his brother James Young Woolford. There were marriages in 1843 of Elizabeth Young Woolford (bap 1822), in 1843 of Ann Young Woolford (bap 1815) and in 1857 of James Young Woolford (bap 1826), all children of John Young & Mary Woolford. A John Young Woolford died age 73 in 1856. Was this John Young Woolford son of John WOOLFORD/Mary YOUNG, Janice Walsh's direct ancestors ?
