concerning Roger WOOLFORD I, d 1701, of Somerset or Dorchester counties, Maryland, who came from England to Virginia, and then to Maryland... previously, my only info re dates of arrival in Virginia and Maryland was that he was in Virginia prior to 04 February 1663, which was the date of his immigration to Maryland (as well as that of his wife Mary, and his daughter Mary), as listed in the transcription of the Maryland land patent records. recently, I read the transcribed records of the Hungars Parish in Northampton County, Virginia for 1660-1661. There was listed his marriage: Roger Walford & Mary Denwood Mar. 1st ( 01 March 1661, I believe... the introduction said that the records were from 25 March 1660 to 25 March 1661) Is WALFORD a common alternate spelling of WOOLFORD ? Or is it more likely that there was an error in the entry in the Parish records, or in the transcription ? Should I be researching WALFORD as well as WOOLFORD in an effort to trace Roger back to England ? What other spellings should I be searching ? Alfred Elston Sr. died May 1, 1891. Then Ellen had Henry James Woods born May 12, 1992 in St. Marylebone, Mdx. Family rumor says that Ellen never married Henry Woods, father of Henry James. I am interested in the WOLFORD -WOOLFORD-WOHLFORD families however you want to spell them. I have a lot of information from records on Dorchester Co and appreciate you all putting them together. My burning question is about those WOOLFORDs or whatever who might have migrated west. I can';t believe all of them stayed in Dorchester Co. Where did they go to? There are WOLFORDs in western MD. Where did htey come from? Filter south out of Somerset and Bedford Co? from some of the eastern counties of PA? or even follow the National Road west from Baltiomore area? I live in Woodstock Illinois and have pursued family history for better than 10 years. I would like to let you know how someone with very little information was able to find "needles in haystacks". My father, Henry Woolford, did not know the origin of our name. His father, Henry Sr. was killed in action in the 1st World War when my dad was an infant. Although he had Aunts and an Uncle in Green Bay Wis., no earlier ancestor information was known. It more or less wasn't talked about much in those days. I started poking around the historical libraries in Wisconsin. I found some census data which gave some info, but the real find was mention of my great grandfather William Bassett Woolford in a book dated 1895 which contained biographical sketches of individuals in Brown County Wisconsin. I obtained a copy of the sketch and it was pure genealogical pay dirt!! It contained his entire family, that he was born in Dayton Ohio, had lived in Palatine Illinois ( a mere 25 miles from my home), and also included background about his parents ( my G G Grandparents) William Woolford and Eunice Fairchild Smith. The sketch stated that William was from Wiltshire and that he had learned railway surveying. Eunice was from Sandusky Ohio. It continued to say that William and Eunice were alive and well in Rockford, Minnesota. It even gave religious affiliations and other bits of info where they had lived and what work he had done. I eventually went to Rockford Minnesota. There were no Woolfords in the area. The local newspaper publisher suggested I talk to an Old Timer. He sent me to another person and that lady knew the Woolfords well. They'd left the area but she had addresses in California. I contacted them and then things really snowballed. Suddenly I was in direct contact with Woolford cousins in Canada, and several states. I was invited to a family gathering in Swan River Manitoba put on by the Woolfords living there. I took my youngest son and it was a wonderful experience in my life. We have had several reunoins and get togethers since. We have located ALL the decendants of William and Eunice Woolford. Before you think you have heard the whole story, there's more. My curiosity led me to Wiltshire. I concluded from studying IGI's, census records, Mr. Greenslade's (YES!) birth and death records, that my ancestor was born in Haydon Wick Rodbourne Cheney Parish Wiltshire. It appears that prior to Rodbourne Cheney, they were in Highworth. I went to Swindon in 1993 and found Woolford cousins. We established that we were 3rd cousins. We are are great friends and cousins. Our families have since visited back and forth several times. I also attended a meeting of the Wiltshire Family History Society during my first visit. I am still looking for Wiltshire information on any Woolford connections. I would be happy to share any information I have with any others. I have Family Tree Maker. I am hoping someone on the list might have a common WOOLFORD family to my wifes or who knows of this line. She has an ancestor, Jacob WOOLFORD (although sometimes seemed to use WOLFORD interchangeably). Jacob 1800-1848 is first found on a census at Butler Co, OH in 1840. I don't know what state he was born since he died priot to the 1850 census and since we have no handed down details from the family. The first written evidence of him is from his marriage to Hannah BECHTOLD (many spellings also, including BECHDOLT/ BECKTOLD) at Butler Co, OH in 1825. Despite this evidence of him in Butler Co, OH in 1825, I cannot defintely find him on a census in 1820 or 1830. There are two Jacob WOOLFORDs on the 1830 OH census in Ross Co & Muskingham Co, OH then on the 1820 OH census two again, one in Pickaway Co. & one in Fairfield Co. (some of these Jacob's are spelled with one "O" -WOLFORD only, but most with two "O"s. I hope to hear from anyone who can not only suggest one of these men as mine who migrated to Butler Co, but also to show good evidence which ones of these men on the 1820/30 census can NOT be mine. I know there are some Jacob WOOLFORD men on early 1800s Pennylvania censuses, but I have no clue if these are parents, uncles, brothers or any connection whatsoever. His gravestone in Butler Co, Madison twp, OH clearly shows the years 1800-1848 for his lifespan. His children were: John 1827, Mary 1829, Daniel 1832, Samuel 1834, Joseph 1841, Susan 1843, & Eliza A. 1846 (these +/- One yr.) Of these, I only can track: Susan who married Daniel STOVER and moved to Douglas Co, Illinois; John who married Elizabeth STOVER- they remained in Butler Co.; Daniel who married Elizabeth ECKERT and who also moved to Douglas Co, IL; Joseph married Catherine ?. I have some of Jacob's grandchildren from: Susan (Alda & Ella STOVER), John (Charles E. & John H.) & Joseph (Hannah). Please help me. I must aplogise to the list owner and to other contributors, particularly Peter Lowe, about my apparant failure to respond to messages. I subscribed some little while ago and sent details of my WOOLFORD connection which I know tie in with those of Peter Lowe. However, I never ever received any further communication from the List, and I assumed that there had been no further interest shown. However, I recently appeared to suffer the same problem with the Bristol and Somerset List, which I know is quite busy. I was sending messages out, but none came back. Until this afternoon when idly trawling through an entirely different system on my computer, I found great wedges of previously unseen Bristol and Somerset piled up, all unread !! Jodie, I cannot be of direct help here. Just a few thoughts: 1. Have you looked at the 1841 census for Purton ? 2. Have you checked the 1881 census for the two sons (Emanuel and Joseph) baptized in Purton ? Are there any Woolfords in the 1881 census index born in Chippenham, Tytherton, Stanley ? 3. You wrote "Tytherton Lucas in the Parish of Chippenham". Tytherton Lucas had its own church and records from 1813 onwards. It now is West/East Tytherton 4. You mentioned "Slumley (or Stanley?) in the Parish of Chippenham". You should be able to find this place in the 1841 & 1851 Census indexes. There is currently a place called Stanley a mile from Tytherton and a couple of miles East of Chippenham. 5. Have you checked baptisms of Eisey & Chippenham/Tytherton for further children ? I am researching a convict ancestor of my husband's - Robert WOOLFORD who was christened in Purton, Wiltshire in February 1803. His parents were Joseph WOOLFORD and Martha Iles. His convict indent states that he left a wife (Elizabeth from Chippenham) and 7 children behind. I am trying to establish where they moved to from Purton because the only marriage record I can find for a Robert and Elizabeth was an Elizabeth Clifford from Eisey (I have mislaid the IGI record for the moment) In the vital records index posted today I see two births to an Elizabeth and Robert Woolford, both at Purton (Emanuel and Joseph). At the time of his capture for sheep stealing he was living somewhere a place called Tytherton Lucas in the Parish of Chippenham as the offense was committed here at the farm of a Mr. Ferris. The records of his place of abode are nearly impossible to read but look like Slumley (or Stanley?) in the Parish of Chippenham. He was tried at Devizes and committed in 1846 I am writing a small book and would love to be able to put in a bit more "meat" of his past. I need to establish if Elizabeth Clifford was his wife and also records of birth or christenings for the children. Joseph and Martha (my Robert's parents) began their family soon after marriage and had three children in six years and then seem to fade out of existence. One presumes that the migration which was to lead to Robert being elsewhere in Wiltshire had started and taken him with it. If I can find his Elizabeth and their children it will give me an idea of what happened to them after Robert was transported. He married out here in Van Dieman's Land and had 7 more children!
