I believe these Hampshire Wolfords of the 1830s belong to the family of John-from-Maryland Wolford. My John's family, by 1830, was in Radolph/Tucker county, WV. And Martin was in Indiana/Illinois at that time. I'm not sure where the Jay County Wolford fits in. Not my direct line...but it may be a cousin or nephew...or not a relation at all. Basically, my John served part time in NJ militia during the Rev war. Shortly afterwards, he moved to Hampshire county for 19 years, (which consisted of many current day counties back then) until 1800s when he bought land in Randolph County...which branched off to Tucker County. The "other" John Wolford's family stayed in Hampshire. Mine, however, did not return to Hampshire. Have a good weekend, Diane

    1. Micheal Wolford
    2. Hi! To all of you who are researching the Wolfords of Western PA, particularly, Michael Wolford of Shade Twp., Somerset Co., I recently learned something interesting that may end up giving us the answer to the question, Was Michael born in PA or MD? I was recently sent the following information from the Rev. Pension Files by a professional genealogist. Michael Woolford (also shown as Wolford) Enlisted 15 May 1777 in Cpt. Griffith's Co. and Capt. Gray's Co., 3rd Maryland Regiment. Living in Somerset Co., PA in November 1815. His land warrant for 100 acres was delivered to the Honorable William Piper. He was also allowed land - 50 acres by Maryland and the land was t the west of Ft. Cumberland in Allegheny Co., MD. No family data. Affidavits were sworn by Andrew & Jcob Borenbile on Michael's behalf. Handwritten note says to see MD Archives, Book pages 35 and 490 - have no idea what that is about. Thomas was born January 10, 1755 in Dorchester Co., MD. Enrolled in Cpt. Edward Noll's Co. and William Richardson's Co., 5th MD Regiment. An iquiry to the file was made in 1925 by Mrs. Sarah E. Stuart, 204 N.Pierce St., Chestertown MD and another in 1925 by L. E. Hugnes of Mnneapolis, MN. Thomas died Oct. 8, 1841. Married to Elizabeth. Two children: Isabella Byns/Byus/Byers who died 9/12/1853 leaving a daughter, Eliabeth, issue. Son, Thomas is sole survivor in Novemer 1857 when he is petitioning for pension from his father. I posted the information on Thomas for contrast. Note that no birth information on Michael was included because none was available. Whereas for Thomas there was known birth information. Could this be because Michael wasn't born in MD? So then why would he enlist in the MD 3rd Regiment as stated above and also in his Rev. Pension file I received. I also received the following tidbit from another researcher from a different line of my family. "Some concerns Jake Sr's Rev War experience. However, there were 2 Jacob Moseses (sp?) in the Maryland 3rd regiment. It ties in with, I believe, the fact that there was a Jacob Moses in Chester Co." This researcher believes that though our common ancestor Jacob Moses was born in Chester Co. he ended up in the Maryland 3rd Regiments with bounty land in Somerset Co., PA. Then she went on to explain... "It's really interesting you mention another Pennsylvanian who was in the Maryland 3rd regiment. Once, a few years ago, I swear I saw a referrence in a Pennsylvania Archive that the Pennsylvania Rangers of the Frontier (I think-but definitely some Pa unit) were transferred to the Maryland 3rd regiment. Unfortunately, that was before I wrote down any referrences. I was strictly flying by the seat of my pants, but do remember a feeling of "oh, that's how he ended up in a Maryland regiment." Could it be that our Michael ended up in a MD Regiment by transfer? Could he too have been originally from Chester Co. just like Jacob Moses? So, what do you think? Leigh Ann

    1. Too Quiet Folks!
    2. Now, I know as list owner, there are a lot of new subscribers. Instead of lurking, how about posting who you are looking for? And for the folks that have been on this list since it's inception, now is the time to repost your queries. I am still seeking William George WOOLFORD, b. 7 March 1867 in Shaw, Lydiard Millicent to Ellen WOOLFORD. William was born out of wedlock. At some point, William George m. Blanche BECKETT Austin although I've had not success in locating a marriage license. Blanche was married to Henry Thomas Austin on 3 May 1881 at Old St. Pancras parish church, Middlesex, London. Henry died 30 November 1888 in London. I am unaware of any children that may have been born during this seven year marriage. If anyone is available to check that I would sure appreciate it! My grandmother, Lily Florence WOOLFORD was b. 17 September 1895 to William George and Blanche on 9 Bournemouth Street, Clapham, London. At the time William George was working as a porter for the L. B. & S. C. Railway. However, he was dismissed for some infraction. My grandmother Lily was raised by William's mother and stepfather. I also do not know if William G. & Blanche had any other children. They were living in Nottingham in 1910 when Blanche died. William died in Chelsea Hospital 24 December 1938, no known family members (his daughter had left for Canada in 1912). Any help in any of these areas greatly appreciated! Janice List Owner

I have other stuff the scan and send and hope to get to it one of these days. I have a lot of information from records on Dorchester Co and appreciate you all putting them together. My burning question is about those WOOLFORDs or whatever who might have migrated west. I can';t believe all of them stayed in Dorchester Co. Where did they go to? There are WOLFORDs in western MD. Where did htey come from? Filter south out of Somerset and Bedford Co? from some of the eastern counties of PA? or even follow the National Road west from Baltiomore area? Did any of the Dorchester Co WOOLFORDs take advantage of the Bounty lands in the west? I am not really concerned with the spelling of the name - just relationships and where they came from. I also have a Wolford/Wohlford Resource Center web page. If interested, e-mail me and I will send Hyperlink. Jim in Vermont
