Woods family information is incorporated into the lineage of John and Mary (Espy) Woods and Col. David and Jane (Woods) Espy and was found in a book ("The Espy-Espey Genealogy Book with Branch Lines and Allied Families," Vol. 2, George Chapter II and by Rita Espy Kuhbander and William G. Espy (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1987) and from Ruby Wigley Pullman, CHARLOTTE M. BRETT, Lois M. Postel, Gloria Sutcliffe; and Joseph L. Delafield, "Genealogies of Penn. Families" published by the Genealogical Publishing Co. note that there are discrepancies! The Espy book does not show the descendants of George Woods, b. in 1740, but it does for 11a. John Woods, b. 1742, 11b. William Woods, b. 1747; and 11c. Anna Woods, b. 1753 all shown to be children of John and Mary (Espy) Woods. It states that John Woods was b. c. 1720 in Ireland, d. 1769; m. Mary Espy, b. 1722. It further states that John Woods was the son of Andrew Woods b.c. 1690 in Blair Park, Ulster, Ireland and d. Aug. 1756 in Lancaster, Penn. He and his wife Sarah, who was b. in Ireland may have had 9 children, three of whom were John, and perhaps, Jane, and perhaps George. Jane Woods who m. Col. David Espy and lived in Bedford, Penn. was probably the daughter of Col. George & Jane (McDowell) Woods also of Bedford, Penn.. John Woods m. Marey Espy (sister of David Espy who lived next door to George Woods in the town of Bedford, Penn.; Margaret w/o PATTON; Jennett w/o John CALHOUN; Agnes w/o Neal McALLISTER; Sarah w/o Andrew COCHRAN; Martha w/o James McCLENAGHAN. The children of John and Marey (Espy) Woods were: i. George, b. 1740; ii. Andrew; b. 1742; iii. John, b. 1745; iv. William, b. 1747; Samuel, b. 1749; Daughters: Martha, b. 1749; Sarah, b. 1751 m. William Clark; Anna, b. 1753; Margaret, b. 1755; Janet, b. 1758; Marey/Mary, b. 1758 d. 1759; and Elizabeth, b. 1760 d. 1760?. {See Will below contributed by Lois M. This John was possibly the brother of George Woods (1st), and could be the John Woods that Howard Nelson Hickock wrote in 1938 was the father of Rebecca Woods who m. George Nixon. Someone should try to contact her to see what other info she can contribute!] Written on 16th ___ 1765 (16 Dec. 1768 , see below) by John Woods of Hanover in Lancaster County (now in Dauphin in County, Penn.), To be buried in the grave yard at Paxtown. "... my beloved wife and children to live on my Plantation til all my children come to mature age and that those of my children that is not be schooled be scooled and have the mantenance of the whole of my Estat till they are forteen years of age." Mentions Beloved wife Marey to receive the third part of his moveables and that his land be not sold til all his children reach maturity unless the executors deem it best, in which case his wife was to receive 1/6th part for her support. Their children: Son GEORGE ten pounds; Son ANDREW fifty pounds as long as he is carefull industrious and stay with the family to he come of mature age and if he chus to go to a trade I appoint him thirty-five pounds; Son JOHN the same or as much as I have appointed my son Andrew upon the same condition; Son WILLIAM forty pounds; Daughter SARAH ten pounds; Daughter ANNA forty pounds; Daughter MARGARET forty pounds; Daughter JANET forty pounds; Daughter MAREY forty pounds; Daughter ELIZABETH forty pounds; Daughter MARTHA forty pounds. Executors: Josiah ESPY, James McCLANAGHAN and MAREY his wife. Will proven on 17 January 1770 in front of Dr. Edward Shippen by Jas. McClannaghan; Robert Hutchison; and DAVID ESPY. At the bottom are some notes: "(From "Espey of Derry," in Pennsylvania Genealogies it appears that John Woods married Marey Espy, daughter of George Espy and granddaughter of Josiah Espy. Mary was born 1722 in the north of Ireland. John and Mary's children were named in his will, the eldest being George, born 1740. The daughter SARAH married WILLIAM CLARK and daughter Anna married JAMES MONTGOMERY. "John Woods was the second son of ANDREW and SARAH WOODS of Hanover. Andrew died August 1756, children: 1) ANDREW, died 1761, leaving a wife Jean, a son MATTHEW and daughters SARAH and AGNES (See "Ferguson of Hanover" in Penn. Genealogies) [QUERY: Is this your line Howard?]; 2) JOHN, m. MARY ESPY; 3) MARGARET; 4) JENNETT, m. JOHN CALHOUN; 5) AGNES, m. NEAL McALLISTER; 6) SARAH m. ANDREW COCHRAN; 7) MARTHA, m. JAMES McCLENAGHAN. "ANDREW WOODS was an emigrant from the north of Ireland, came to Pennsylvania prior to 1740. According to "Ferguson of Hanover" his daughter MARGARET married a PATTON." Continuing with the descendants of 11a. John Woods, Jr., b. 5 June 1745 in Penn, the third child of Mary Espy and John Woods, died 27 June 1821 in Cumberland Co., PA. He m. Elizabeth HERRON from Conedoguinet Creek, dau. of David Herron. Elizabeth died 3 Nov. 1810. There children were (From Lois Postal of Sherman Oaks, CA): i. J. Matthew Woods, b. 1775; went to Kentucky. ii. Ann Woods, b. 1777; m. in 1805 in Cumberland Co., PA, William Green. (?) iii. David Herron Woods, b. 1782; m. 1815 in Franklin Co., PA, Catherine CAMPBELL. He moved his family of eleven to Ohio, and on to Illinois in the 1840's. (Lois Postel's grandparents. No further info from her.). iv. Joseph Woods, b. 1784; m. in 1811 in Cumberland Co., PA Agnes CROSSAN. Moved to Ohio in 1828. Their son, John Simpson Woods, moved to Missouri in the 1860's. 11b. William Woods, fourth child of Mary Espy and John Woods, was b. in 1747, died in 1782. He married Ann SEAWRIGHT dau. of William and Ann (HAMILTON) Seawright of Lampiter, Lancaster Co., PA. Child: i. Seawright Woods, b. 1 Jan. 1770. 11c. Anna Woods, b. in 1853 in Lancaster Co., PA, d. before 29 Oct. 1793 in Mecklenberg, NC. She m. 11 Sep. 1770 in Hanover, Lancaster Co., PA James MONTGOMERY, b. in 1745 in Paxton )Paxtang) Twp. Dauphin Co., PA, d. 1793 in Mecklenberg, NC. He was the son of John Montgomery and Martha MONTGOMERY. John was b. in 1710 in Ireland d. 1778/9; He m. in 1735 Martha MONTGOMERY, b. 1715 in Ireland, d. 1799, and they had a son James who m.
