The Oregonian 10 July 1999 Joseph Leonard Woods A mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 12, 1999, in St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Oregon City for Joseph Leonard Woods, who died July 7 at age 81. Mr. Woods was born Sept. 29, 1917, in The Dalles. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He lived in Oregon City since 1950. He was a truck driver for Dwyer division of Publisher's Paper Co. for 30 years until retiring in 1980. He married Lorraine McDonald in 1940. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Janet Mauro of Petaluma CA, Phyllis Rutherford, Terry Pulse and Mary C. Woods, all of Oregon City, and Toni DePeel of Gladstone; sons, Joseph M. of Vancouver WA and Christopher D. of Tacoma; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. The family suggests re- membrances to Willamette Falls Hospice. Arrangements are by Hillside Chapel. 24 Jul 1999 Robert Ashley Wood Robert Ashley Wood died July 16, 1999, at age 81. A memorial service is pending. Mr.Wood was born Jan. 27, 1918, in Kansas City, MO. He attended the University of Hawaii and served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. A career Air Force veteran, he served at the Pentagon and established the Emergency Broadcast System, also known as Conelrad. After retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1959, he became an aerospace engineer and was involved in the "Spy in the Sky' program. He was a long-time member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He lived in Astoria for about four years until moving to Hillsboro in 1998. He married Virginia Miller in 1945. Survivors include his wife; sons, John of Astoria and Lee of Montrose, CO; daughter, Mary Watson of Tijeras NM and nine grandchildren. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Washington County Hospice. Arrangements are by Caldwell's Luce- Layton Mortuary in Astoria. The Oregonian 24 Jul 1999 Fern Arlene Messenger A private graveside service will be held for Fern Arlene Messenger, who died July 20, 1999, at age 76. Mrs. Messenger was born March 7, 1923, in Emmett, ID. Her maiden name was Woods. She lived in the Portland area from the late 1950's until moving to Centralia WA in 1997. She was a homemaker. She married Andrew in 1969; he died in 1989. Survivors include her sons, Dan Holbrook of Ukiah CA, and Frank Manville and Steve Manville, both of Chehalis WA; daughters, Donna Taylor of Portland and Janet Bauer of Apple Valley UT; sister, Evelyn Fons of Bloomington UT; brother, Amos Woods of Emmett ID; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Interment will be in Sweet ID. The family suggests remembrances to the Ronald McDonald House or Shriner's Hospital for Children. Arrangements are by Potter Chapel in Emmett.
