    1. Re: [WOODS-L] "Buck" Woods, Orange County, NC

    3. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has a connection. My Nancy Woods b. 1806 Orange Co, NC, married Hymelius Patton b. 1805 Orange Co, NC on 26 Oct 1824 Orange Co, NC. I have been told by an elderly family researcher that Nancy's family was connected to the Chisenhalls--perhaps her mother was a Chisenhall--however her memory was fuzzy on this and her research was stolen from her home many years ago, so there is no possibility of her backing up this claim. I believe my Hymelius Patton may be a descendant of Alexander Patton of Haw Olde Fieldes (a son was named Alexander). There were Woods who lived nearby. Among them were Matthew Woods and Margaret Faucette, who although they appear to be the most likely candidates as Nancy's parents, have all but been ruled out by Woods researchers who are more knowledgeable about this particular Woods family that ended up in SC. Hymelius & Nancy left Orange County ca. 1833 for the Sequatchie Valley of Tennessee, possibly migrating with one of Nancy's brothers. Hymelius himself claimed to be Cherokee! , according to a grandson. It is likely he was of mixed descent. It may be that a prevailing prejudice against the Cherokee in those years was what prompted the migration to Tennessee. The Woods and Pattons, by the way, have connections that go back to Pennsylvania and ultimately Scotland.
