    3. While researching my Scotch-Irish BROWNs last week, I was pointed in the direction of York Co., PA, where they were prior to the late 1700's. In George R. Prowell's , "History of York County, Penn." Vol. 1, (Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co., 1907) under the Scotch-Irish section is a part about "Manor of Maske," and the Scotch-Irish settlement there of which the present town of Gettysburg is the center. (Gettysburg is now in Adams county which was taken from part of York Co. in 1800). Quoting from pp. 126-7, "These early settlers seemed to have crossed the Susquehanna at Harris' Ferry and came through South Mountain to what was then the western part of Lancaster County and from 1749 to 1800 embraced York County. The name of the settlement is taken from Marsh Creek, a small stream. ... As early as 1736 , a goodly number of Scotch-Irish had settled here, upon invitation of the Penns, to take up lands 'common terms.' ... Finally in 1741, an order was issued for the survey of a manor to be called 'Manor of Maske.'" In the list of many settlers between 1736 and 1741 are the following: Hugh Woods, March, 1741; John McDowell, Apr. 1741; James McDowell, March, 1740; John Little, May, 1741; and John & Samuel Brown, May, 1741. Sorry, I can't provide additional info about the settlement or the people in it at this time. George W. Page
