Is there someone else that has provable documentation that ANDREW of 1760 IS their son? Or do you have proof positive that he ISN'T their son? Archibald didn't leave a will that I can find, just an inventory - oopsy, no children listed. Thanks listers! I'm running out of time - help me if you can. PAT in Oregon pat@skyride.net

Fellow Listers, I think the most important thing or highest priority is to make certain that you have Virus Protection software on your computer system. Until you do, you will always be at high risk. The next thing is to make sure you update online your virus protection on a regular basis to keep it current. In regard to attachments distributed through the List, I guess I missed something. I was under the impression that on most Lists, attachments on e-mails was prohibited and couldn't be sent to the List. If you did it was automatically stripped off. For help on the latest Virus that we had on this List called: "W32.Badtrans.13312@mm" check out this site: <http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/> Hope this helps someone. Regards, Jesse Lee "Jack" WOOD,III Powell, OH (Formerly from TX) jwood1@mindspring.com P.S. See e-mail below for more info. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: [ROOTS-AND-OTHERS-L] the Kak worm/virus - from the listowner Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 09:48:09 -0500 From:"Stephens, Larry V" <stephenl@INDIANA.EDU> To: ROOTS-AND-OTHERS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU Several people have reported their anti-virus filters have picked up the Kak worm/virus in list mail. Listserv has put filters in place and I've tried to limit the spread of viruses and worms by disallowing attachments. But, some of the smarter ones don't need to be "run" or opened, per se. We're doing everything we can on this end to prevent them, but people with nothing better to do keep trying to harm you. * Don't open attachments from anywhere unless you know who sent it and expect it (don't forget some of these programs use your address book to send out mail). Even then it's safer to save it to disk and let your virus program check it - and that's not 100% safe. * If you email program has a preview feature, disable it. If you can tell it to not run scripts, do so. * Keep your virus software up-to-date. * BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP! If you are not backing up your data files on a regular basis then you're being foolish - it's that simple. If it's not a virus it may be lightning, or theft, or fire, or plain old mechanical failure. I know budgets are tight, but buying a computer without having the ability to back up the data is like buying a car with no brakes: you can use it but it's not smart to do so. Zip disks, ORB drives, CD burners, tape units all make good backup devices. * Write down all the programs you use. You don't need to back those up because they need to be installed from scratch, anyway. But, you need to have an idea what you're using and be able to find the original CDs or disks. (You do need to backup any patches you download, though.) * Back up your data! If you think you don't have time to back it up, ask if you have time to recreate it. Have a good day. Hi Lists, My friend suggested that if we are sending an attachment we mention it right "up front." Would this solve the problem since a "virus attachment" is listed at the end? I have a Charles Woods born abt. 1750 somewhere in America. He became a physician and took citizenship papers in St. Croix, then Danish West Indies, in 1781, in the midst of the Revolution. St. Croix gave out lots of citizenship papers at this time, as the islands were crucial to commerce and the British were unable to stop the trade with the Americans. I do not know whether he was a Loyalist seeking refuge from his native land or a Revolution sympathizer whose eyes in a port such as St. Croix could be crucial to the cause. In the next generation, there was a connection to Philadelphia, where Charles's son William Henry Woods died in 1854 or so. Let me know if any of this rings any bells, please. Laura
Hi Fellow listers, I am also getting the virus's sent to me with your attachments. I know you probably don't realize this is going on. I won't be opening any attachments for awhile. Thanks to everyone that is trying to help me track Andrew Woods 1760. I'm still looking. PAT in Oregon
While I was at the library on Friday I overheard this interesting tidbit from the genealogy librarian. (It's really fun at our genealogy section, everyone talks out loud and the librarian especially for those people who are too shy to ask!) She said the entire 1870 census for the state of Michigan is now on-line, free, at the Library of Michigan. I sent this informiiton to another researcher and sure 'nuff, it's there and she found her people. These are images, not transcriptions. So for what it's worth: http://envoy.libofmich.lib.mi.us/1870_census/ Happy time travels. Susan.
> unsubscribe for the time being > note I have received 'badtrans' virus through one of the listers tagged to a 'please open' attachment. Fortunately my anti-v norton protection deleted it. You have all been warned. Do not persecute the offender, they are probably doing it unknowingly.
Judy, I thought I had sent a good deal of material on James E. Wood of Winchester. I have a file that contains an article from Cartmell's History, Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and Their Descendants. Cartmell VA. Books Co., 1963. I ran across this material at the Hagerstown, Maryland Library, Maryland Room. The librarian is Mr. John Fry. I also have a publication from the 1999 Appleblossom Festival in Winchester with information about James Wood. In the article in Cartmell's James Wood made a point of listing his descendants as he was aware that there were many other Wood individuals with similar names. This article also refers to the Glass family. Someone was recently researchin a James Wood and a connection to a Gass (?) individual. I e-mailed them to the effect I had some information about a James Wood and the Glass family. I have not heard from them. If anyone want's the material I have they can let me know and I will create a file I can send to them. At one time I furnished material to two other individuals. I don't know if it is appropriate to give their names or e-mail address here. Let me know. Hi everyone Due to work pressures, I shall be signing off in a week or two. But before then I thought I would just re-post my interests in the hope of some response. I am researching my male line WOODS descendants in the UK, based mainly around the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk in the East of England. The main names I am researching are Enoch and Amos Woods, which are probably son and father, both born in the 1700's. If anyone feels they could have a connection with this branch of the family I would be pleased to hear from you off-list. Regards in anticipation. nick woods
