Trying to track the children of Citizen Stovall Woods (b 1785 @ Franklin Co VA) and Jane Hale (b ABT 1898 @ Franklin Co VA). They were married on 15 Mar 1821 In Franklin Co VA. Their children heir children (not confirmed yet) are: William Henry Woods Peter Hairston Woods Sarah Anne Woods Elizabeth Hairston Woods Specifically I'm trying to connect the son William to James H. Woods (b. 1847 in SC). Family tradition indicates his father was a William. For a number of reasons (and I will not bore all with the details at this point) I believe this William is the William Henry Woods mentioned above. Other material. Citizen and and Jane are on the 1850 Carroll County Census with no children. On the 1860 Census, they appear with 3 children: Mary (b. 1855) Wiley (b. 1845) James (b. 1847) What I believe is that something happened to William Henry Woods and that his children Wiley, James and Mary, went to live with their grandparents Citizen and Jane. I am reasonably familiar with Citizen's line: son of John Woods - Ann Hairston; g/son of Robert Woods - Elizabeth Middleton. (I do not know who Robert Woods' parents are, although I have found entries indicating James (Blair Park Michael's brother) and a "Mary," last name unknown. All suggestions appreciated. Brett F. Hello, I'm looking for the parents and/or siblings of JOHN WOOD b. abt 1823 in Indiana was in Grant Co., KY by 1850. He married MARTHA J. GIBSON b. abt 1831 in KY. Their children: MARY H. Thank you for your time Debbie jjure@aol.com
Finally made it to James, this is the last of the four brothers (Michael, William and Andrew being the others) who emigrated from Ireland with their sister Elizabeth Woods Wallace. James parents were John Woods and Elizabeth Worsop or Elizabeth Woods or Elizabeth Adams depending upon the source documents. (Hopefully this festering issue will finally be resolved after the research project is finished) In any event, does anyone, and know anything about James? I have found one reference that his wife was named Mary, but no last name was provided. There is also information that James was the father of a Robert Woods, born 1719 in Ireland, and died in 1811 in Franklin County VA. Robert married Elizabeth Middleton (b 1725) in Lunenburg County VA in 1752. Her parents were John Middleton and Margaret Ainsworth. Some questions. Is James the father of Robert and, if not, who might Robert's father be? Does anyone know where James lived or what he did for a living? Did James have any other children? Finally, what was the last name of James' wife Mary, presuming her name was indeed Mary. James is really a black hole. There are very few references to him and at most he is described as being just "one of the brothers." Thanks for any assistance. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, NM
My wife, Mary, born 3/11/45, was adopted. Recent access to her adoption records names a MELVIN WOOD(S) as her birth father. He apparently was not informed of the pregnancy or birth. Info on Melvin is limited assuming it was not a fabrication by birth mother (who will not talk to or have anything to do with Mary). Melvin was about 26 years of age in 1944 and supposedly was a barber in Billings, MT. Parents were farmers, possibly in Harlowton or Scobey area. He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. We have exhausted all leads thus far. We are discouraged but still holding to the hope that this name is birth father's actual name and that we will find him. Any fresh leads will be apreciated. After reviewing the following, I would appreciate any suggestions as the who the parent(s) of the David, Mathew, Robert and William (1790 Census) might be. Or is one of them the parent? I'm trying to identify a David L. Woods (b. 1880 NC) and a Henry J. Woods (b. 1826) in NC. Thanks and I hope someone finds this information relevant. Brett F. In my continuing quest to identify the ancestors of William Woods (born Ireland 1695 - died Orange County NC 1785) it seems he was buried in the Little River Presbyterian Church graveyard. Evidently the church was organized in 1761 by a Rev John White and is described (in 1905) as follows: "This historic old church stands between the North and South Forks of Little River, in Orange County, about eight miles northeast of Hillsboro." My question are two: Does this church still exist? If so, has anyone done some kind of inventory of the graves? It occurs to me that that at least some of William's children were buried there. His son John (1720-1813) was a church member, as was John's son William. In fact all three of them were reported to be ruling elders. Thanks for any clues. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

The following information on the family of William Woods (b. 1695 Ireland - d. 1785 Orange County NC) is taken from the Woods-McAfee Memorial. This William is the brother of Michael Woods of Blair Park who came from Ireland with Michael in the 1730s. However when Michael went to Virginia, William went to Maryland, then South Carolina sometime between 1730 and 1735. Please note that there are a lot of new names in this line as the descendants of William Woods of North Carolina have not been that fully researched. Woods (b. 1800 in NC) shows up on the 1880 Greene County TN Census. Also I want to find out who is the father of Henry J. Woods who was born in NC in 1826. Henry also shows up on the 1880 Greene County TN Census. Is David L Woods the father of Henry J. Woods? On the 1800 Orange County Census, there are entries for: David; Elihu; Harrison; James; James (followed by the initials B.S. whatever this means); John (who is the former Orange County NC sheriff and the son of William); John W.; two Josephs; Leven; Sampson; Samuel; Thomas; and a William (2). Obviously some of these can be associated with the names above. But I would like to figure out the total family picture for the first generation or so after the William Woods who started the NC line of Woodses. Thanks for any help and I hope some of the above material helps someone out. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, NM

I'm trying to determine the details on the David Woods line of Orange County NC The census indexes I have copied from the library indicate: 1790 one David Woods in SC before 1790 (no county specified) 1800 one David in Orange County, another in Rowan 1810 one David in Orange County 1820 one David in Orange County, a David Jr. also in Orange County (I suspect this is the one born in 1800) 1830 one David (no Jr) in Orange County perhaps David Sr died. 1840 one David in Orange County By 1850 there are three Davids: one in Orange County (age 46); another in Mecklin; and a David K in Rowan. Question 1: Does anyone know who started this line? Question 2: Does anyone have the names of their wives and children? Question 3 A David L. Woods (age 80, b. NC) shows up on the 1880 Greene County TN Census. Who are his children? Additionally, there are a number of Henry Woodses who seemingly parallel the David Woodses indicated above. Are these sons or brothers? I would appreciate any help. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, NM
I am researching the WOODS families who lived in COOSA COUNTY Alabama during the 1850'-1860's. The WOODS families who lived in ST CLAIR County Alabama during the 1870'S -1880'S. Lastly, the WOODS families of BLOUNT COUNTY Alabama during the 1890's -1940. These would be the families of Robert Woods, John Wesley Woods and John Wesley Woods Jr. I have been searching for ancestors or descendants for any of these for 3 years-w/no luck. Can anyone help. I believe that that Robert Woods born around 1783 was from S.Carolina. RUSSELL E WOODS

Darrell, Maybe we are related. I have another Wood branch in my family that I have yet to post. I am related to Thomas WOOD (1658-1702) of Rowley, MA and Mary HUNT. So, are we cousins? Darrel Wood
Sharon, I agree that it is interesting that the name of Ellsworth appears in our families as middle names and that your family lived in southern IN. But this seems to be little to go on. It may bear checking out. I have always wondered why my family had members with the Ellsworth middle name but I have never found a reason for it. I have not been able to discover enough about my family in IN or before to connect with your family. Let us continue our research. Darrel
Angela, I have been waiting for a response like yours. I am very much interested in your James Cole WOOD. First, I must know, do you know FOR CERTAIN that the childen you listed are the children of James Cole WOOD? Cynthia Ann WOOD was married to Thomas PEEK(PEAK) in Martin co, IN on December 30, 1847. She has been confused with Cynthia Ann (McCART) WOOD at times. I have found Thomas and Cintha(sic) A PEEK in the 1860 census for Martin co, IN: Thomas PEEK age 38 b. IN Cintha A age 29 b. IN Dom ? age 11 b. IN male Sarah M. age 9 b. IN female John age 4 b. IN male Alice age 5/12 b. IN female Mildred age 70 b. SC female Christopher age 2 b. IN male I, also, have a note that states that Thomas was born May 15, 1818 and died Oct 29, 1886. Cynthia Ann born July 9, 1830 and died Mar 1, 1889. I strongly suspect that the father of William WOOD was Nathan WOOD. 1820 census Orange co, IN page 125 Nathan WOODS Thomas WOODS page 129 Mark D WOODS page 130 Samuel WOODS Joseph WOODS Only Nathan, Mark D and Samuel could be William or James' father. (only ones of age and male children) 1830 census Orange co, IN (WOOD's of interest) page 28 Nathan WOOD page 29 Lewis B WOOD James C WOOD 1840 census Orange co, IN page 97 William WOOD (Southwest twsp - next to Martin co, IN) (no Nathan, Lewis B or James C) With William is his wife, Cynthia Ann (McCART), two young girls and an elderly woman could be his mother (she fits the age line of Nathan's wife). I found a marriage record for a Nathan WOOD in Barren co, KY. He married Lettis MITCHELL on Sept 16, 1803. I have found no reference to Nathan WOOD in Barren co, KY after 1818. (I find it very interesting that James C has a daughter named Lillas, I believe that "Lettis" is incorrect. I have never seen this name before or since. Lillas and Lettis may be the same name.) Are you still with me? Lewis B WOOD was born abt 1804 in KY. Married Mirah HALL in Orange co, IN on March 31, 1825. His first child in the 1850 census in Crawford co IN was born in Orange co, 2nd born in Crawford co, next two were born in Dubois co, IN. So, Lewis was moving around, from Orange co to Crawford to Dubois to Crawford, counties. Lewis B WOOD had a son named Nathan. James C WOOD seems to be in Martin co, IN in 1840. There are 4 boys and 4 girls in the family at this time. By 1850, there are other WOOD families in Orange co, however, it seems they are from other areas than KY and only lend to confuse the WOOD families in the area. Can you lend any further light on the info I have? Darrel

I thought I would put this out one more time in the event someone new may have joined the list. I'm trying to find the parents of my great-grandfather James H. Woods, who shows up on the 1880 Greene County TN Census (and nowhere else that I have been able to locate). In 1880, James lists his age as 33 and his place of birth as South Carolina. The remainder of the household (all born in Tennessee) is composed of the following: Elizabeth, age 39 (her maiden name is Fox) Rachel, age 7 Mary, age 4 Leroy, age 2 (my grandfather) Mary Fox, age 44 (there is a notation on the census that she is a sister-in-law) After spending the better part of six months online and looking through innumerable rolls of census records and indices, I have determined that I would be better served to find someone who knows a bit more about genealogical research to assist me in my search. To this end, I am offering a $150 reward to the first person who can provide me proof of James H. Woods' parents. The clues, I suppose, lie somewhere in South Carolina birth, deed or census records. If you are interested in this project, or have the relevant information, please contact me. However, aside from this entry, and as a matter of courtesy to others, please E-Mail me directly do not post your replies in this list. If requested, I will then provide you my telephone numbers and addresses, as well as any other material you feel it necessary to verify the legitimacy of my offer. If you are interested in what I do, check: http://www.nmgcb.org/ As those of you who have been reading my queries for the last six months or so realize, this is a legitimate offer. Personally, I believe there ought to be a REWARD-L list...obviously coordinated by someone who knows quite a bit about research. In any event, I hope this will spark some interest out there somewhere. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico
