    2. Donna Harris
    3. I don't have any information about who this Thomas Wood(s) was, but it appears that he died on this expedition, according to two sources which I have read, The JONES GENEALOGIES. . .by Fothergill, and the History of Dinwiddie County by Richard L. Jones, 1976. And Major Gen Abraham Wood emigrated to Jamestown in 1620 at 6 yrs of age. I have not seen any proof that he had any sons, only two daughters, Mary and Margaret. There is also a Henry Wood listed in the Muster of the VA residents in 1624. I don't have any further info about him. Regards, Donna in Lake Co., CA

    3. In the History of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, as excerpted below, there is a reference to a Thomas Woods in the county in 1671. Does anyone have a clue who this Thomas Woods might be, or from what family he is descended? If this record is valid, then this puts some Woodses in VA long before the emigration from Ireland of Michael Woods of Blair Park and his family. THE HISTORY of PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY VIRGINIA CHAPTER I THE INDIANS The following year, 1671, these local Indians were again visited by explorers with a commission, when Thomas Woods, Thomas Batts and Robert Fallan were sent out by Major Abram Wood "for the finding out the ebbing and flowing of the waters on the other side of the mountains in order to the discovery of the South Sea." They set out from Appomattox18 Town on September 1, 1671 and traveled from the Occaneechi Path due west two days and came to the Sapony Indian Town, about two o'clock. In the evening they reached the Saponeys west (probably Pintahae) where they were "joyfully and kindly received with firing of guns and plenty of provisions." After [p.9] securing a Sapon guide to show them a nearer way to the Toleras than usual they continued their journey about twenty-five miles and came "to the town of the Hanathaskies, lying west by north, in an Island in the Sapony River, rich land." Twice more in one day they passed the Sapony River; but after crossing the mountains the river became the Roanoke, a curious custom which it follows today. The river is called Roanoke at its head until it breaks through the Blue Ridge Mountains, when it becomes the Staunton until its conjunction with the Dan a hundred miles lower down; then it again becomes the Roanoke, which name it bears until its mighty waters reach Albemarle Sound. The travelers discovered a great river flowing north by west, which they named in honor of their chief, Wood River (now New River), and after taking possession of all this western domain in the name of the English monarch, they returned home by the same route, visiting the towns of the Tolero, Hanathoskies, and Saponies where they were well and kindly received. On October first they reached Fort Henry and closed their diary with the pious exclamation, "God's Holy name be praised for our preservation! 2. Brett Woods
    3. I'm continuing to narrow down the players in the Citizen Woods family of Benton and Carroll Counties TN. This is the family as I understand it: Citizen Stovall Woods (b. VA 1797 - d. Carroll County TN 8 Dec 1850) m. Jane M. Hale (b. VA 1800) 1. William Henry Woods 2. Peter Hairston Woods m. Jennie Haines 3. Sarah Anne Woods m. Peebles 4. Elizabeth Hairston Woods William Henry Woods (b. VA 1822 - d. TN 30 Sep 1855) m. Martha E. Hogan (b. TN 30 Aug 1827 - d. Aug 1890) 1. James M. Woods (b. 1847) 2. Wiley H. Woods (b. 1846) 3. Mary E. Woods (b. 1845) 4. Susan Y. Woods 5. Thomas J. Woods After William Henry Woods' death, his sons Wiley and James lived with their grandfather Citizen Stovall Woods. There are some online entries that both James M. Woods and Wiley H. Woods (plus a number of other Woods cousins) served in the 7th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry (U.S.) and may have been taken prisoner and held at Andersonville. Does anyone know anything about their military service? I am particularly interested in any information -- particularly collateral material -- on Citizen, William Henry and James M. Woods, and would appreciate any comments, additions, suggestions or corrections. Thanks for any help. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    3. Does anyone have CD # 354, Passenger and Immigration Index, 1538-1940 FTW lists an Alexander WOODS as being on this CD. I have a cousin with an old pedigree stating that Alexander died aboard ship during the crossing. Need to know if this could be him. Don't know his age, but he could have come from Scotland through England to end up in Connecticut, around 1728. His wife's name was Margaret (MORE) WOOD, b. Scotland, and his record shows that John WOODS may have been born about 6 Wks before sailing. The IGI has a (b.) record for John WOODS, s. of Elexander dated 15 Oct 1728, in Hartford Co. Farmington Twp. CT. This could be a baptimal record after they arrived, but don't I understand why Margaret isn't listed and Elexander is, IF THIS IS HIM. I just haven't made it to the Family History Center here to send for the film. With a Scottish brogue, Alexander would be pronounced Elexander. We've been looking for this guy for a long time. Hope someone can help. Kenneth, ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 3. There were a number of WOOD families from Clermont Co. OH that moved to IL in the early to mid-1800's. I have a number of them on my web. The only James WOOD I have was born in 1790 and I do not have any other information on him. My WOOD family comes from Clermont Co. and they visited IL on several occasions. In fact, my grandfather was born in Windsor, Shelby Co. IL but his birth was recorded in Clermont Co. You might want to check this connection. 1. [WOODS-L] WOODS, Berbie B. approx 1885 NC MYSTERY???
    2. Renee Roderiques
    3. Ok, I'm ready for pure speculation and theory at this point because I'm not getting anywhere on logic. Berbie B. Woods was born to Jesse Harrison WOODS and Elizabeth HORNER in March, 1898 in Durham/Orange NC. He supposedly married an Annie Taylor and had four children: two boys (born no more than two years apart before 1935) and two girls. The two boys spent some time at Caswell Training School. They ran away when in their teens. No one seems to know what became of them. I am told their names where Robert and John. They both had albinism and mild hearing loss. The two girls, I was told, were placed in Oxford Orphanage after Berbie's death (before 1942). Oxford has searched their files and find no records of children of a Berbie Woods and Annie Taylor Woods. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I know Berbie showed up in the 1900 Durham Co Census. I know that he had these children (my sister met the two boys about 1950 when they were still at Caswell.) I have no idea where the parents died, what happened to the sisters or what their names were.
