    1. [WOODS-L] Charles Woods(es) Augusta County VA and Orange County NC (1760-1820)
    2. Brett Woods
    3. Does anyone have any information on the following Charles Woods: Charles Woods married Beddy [sic] Lynch on 11 Mar 1812 in Orange County, North Carolina A Charles Woods shows up on both the 1810 (p176) and the 1820 (p302) Orange County NC Censuses. The only other reference to a Charles Woods in this area comes from the following excerpt, but many years earlier: CHRONICLES OF THE Scotch-Irish Settlement IN VIRGINIA EXTRACTED FROM THE ORIGINAL COURT RECORDS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY 1745-1800 ABSTRACTS OF WILLS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA. AUGUSTA COUNTY COURT. WILL BOOK NO. 3. ADDITIONAL MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. Page 236.--21st May, 1761. Samuel McDowell and Richard Woods' bond (with David Stewart), as guardian (appointed) to Samuel, Arthur, Esther, Elizabeth, and Charles Woods, orphans of Charles Woods. Who was this Charles Woods and what was his relationship with Richard Woods and Samuel McDowell? Further, is his son, the orphan Charles, related somehow to the Charles that married Biddy and shows up on the early 1810 and 1820 Orange County censuses? Thanks for any information. Brett F. 1. [WOODS-L] Catherine Elizabeth (Kitty) WOOD - ca. 1900 TX
    2. William Thompson
    3. Greetings, I am seeking the parents of Catherine Elizabeth (Kitty/Kittie) WOOD, married to Robert N. MIERS ca. 1901 in Dallas, TX. I found an entry for this family in the 1920 US Census, no records for 1910, and no luck looking for her family in the 1900 census. I have found a marriage certificate from Dallas, but no mention of her parents. I'm feeling rather stuck at this point. My inclination is to approach the Dallas Public Library, but am not sure what to request, beyond the above. Can/Will they check newspapers for that era, or does this require a trip to Dallas? What can I reasonably request, given the limited information I have to offer? Regards, Bill Thompson wthompso@bbn.com

    1. [WOODS-L] $100 REWARD: Find the Parents of Henry J. Woods (b 1826) NC/SC/TN
    2. Brett Woods
    3. As those of you who have suffered through my innumerable queries for the last year or so realize, I am quite serious about tracing my ancestry. However, I have exhausted the resources available here in New Mexico, and seem to be at a dead end with the queries and other online databases. I have previously placed a reward notice. It worked. I found the individual for whom I was searching in about two days, and the researcher received a cashier's check. As I understand it, the search was not that difficult as they had access to relevant archival material and considerably more experience in genealogical research. Accordingly, I thought I would try it once more and am offering a $100 reward to the first researcher who can identify the parents of my great-great-grandfather Henry J. Woods who was born (depending upon which census one believes) in either NC or SC in about 1826. On the 1860 Spartanburg County SC Census, Henry's family is enumerated as follows: Father: Henry J. Woods (b. 1826) various censuses indicate both a NC or SC birth Wife: Mary H. Woods (b SC 1822) (possibly a Lynch?) Children: Nathan J Woods (b SC 1851) Lynch E. Woods (b SC 1846) female (perhaps a previous Woods-Lynch marriage?) James H. Woods (b SC 1848) (my great-grandfather) John B. Woods (b SC 1849) William B. Woods (b SC 1850) Thomas J. Woods (b SC 1854) Luther L. Woods (b SC 1856) Margaret C. Woods (b SC 1858) Robert H. Woods (b SC 1859) It should be noted that the LDS entry on Henry's family is incorrect...possibly due to the fact it was evidently taken from the 1860 Spartanburg County Census which is fairly illegible. The children Luther and Margaret were identified from later Censuses, specifically the 1870 and 1880 Greene County TN rolls. Regarding Henry's parents, the clues, I suppose, lie somewhere in either North or South Carolina birth, deed, probate or census records. However, as I posted last night, I personally feel -- but cannot make the connection -- that Henry may well be the son of one of the following Woods families that show up on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Spartanburg County SC Censuses: 1. James Woods b. 1788 - wife Rachel (Hawkins?) b. 1797 SC. James and Rachel had at least four children: Susan b. 1829; Nathan Richmond b. 22 Sept 1831; Elizabeth b. 1833; and William James (James William) b. 4 Oct 1839. 2. William Woods b. 1780 - wife Jane (Babb?) b 1785. William and Jane (according to LDS-consider the source) had the following children: Clarissa b. 1808; Abner b. 1809; Susan b. 1812; Hugh b. 1814; Kellet b 1816; Larissa b. 1820; Polly b. 1879; Nancy b. 1824; William b. 1827; Martha b. 1829; Martin b. 1831; and Harvey Harney b. 1833. 3. John Woods b. 1787 - wife Agnes (unknown) b. 1790. 4. Robert Woods b. 1788 - wife Jane b. 1790. I have not yet determined if James, William, Robert and John are brothers. Nor do I have a clue as to their parent' identity. And again, this is just a guess on my part. Obviously, due to the similarities of names, it would appear that Henry would most likely descend from James and Rachel (there was even a Nathan in that family). Further, my great-grandfather James H. Woods b. 1848, named his first born daughter Rachel...but perhaps this is merely a coincidence. James ended up marrying an Elizabeth Fox (daughter of Isaac Fox) and living in Greene County TN. If you are interested in this project, or have the relevant information, please contact me. However, aside from this entry, and as a matter of courtesy to others, please E-mail me directly do not post your replies to this list. If requested, I will then provide you my telephone numbers and addresses, as well as any other material you feel is necessary to verify the legitimacy of my offer. In any event, I hope this will spark some interest from an individual who feels they might just be up to the challenge of finding Henry's parents and receive $100 for their efforts. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico Please Note: I will, of course, verify the information.

    1. [WOODS-L] WOOD, John Edward (Midwest U.S.)
    2. Susan Wood
    3. Hi, One of my "brick walls" is my husband's direct name line. Here is what I have been told... WOOD, John Edward m. FITZPATRICK, ??? They had the following children: WOOD, Jack m. ???, Stella WOOD, Anna WOOD, Herman m. ???, Fay WOOD, Dessie m. ???, Archie WOOD, Corbett (never married) WOOD, Harry Earl m. BRUBAKER, Agnes Lucille abt. 1909 Harry Earl WOOD was my husband's grandfather. Family stories say that Harry did not like his father's strong discipline and that as a teenager, he jumped off of a wagon and took off. He ended up in Jay County, Indiana and married Agnes Lucille BRUBAKER about 1909. Harry was born July 25, 1887 in Indiana so I suspect that John Edward WOOD and his family also lived in Indiana. I know that Jay County is close to the Ohio border and Agnes Lucille BRUBAKER has ties to Darke County, Ohio so that is also a possibility. I am also not positive that John Edward WOOD's wife's surname is FITZPATRICK. Does anyone know anything about this John Edward WOOD? Thank you, Susan Wood mailto:swood@bbn.com

    1. [WOODS-L] The Eno River Woodses, Orange County NC, circa 1750 (This is Thomas and Mary's Family)
    2. Brett Woods
    3. There seems to be a discrepancy as to whether the Thomas Wood(s) "of Eno" Orange County NC circa 1750, was actually a Woods (with the s) or a Wood. I answered a question earlier this evening and thought I would post it for the others, who might be looking at this line. (Also I, too, would like to know the ancestry of Thomas, b 1730...any ideas?) ************************* Sue, I thought I would drop you a note, regarding this family. I have kept coming back to it again and again. Finally, I made it to the library and looked at the census listings for early Orange County. It seems that this was actually a Woods family...with the "s." Here is a rough breakdown of what I found: First of all, check out the LDS entry on a Thomas Woods (b abt 1730) married a Mary. (I'm sure you've already done this) The easiest way to find him is placing the query for his son Blayton b. 1764, Orange County NC. Now, this family's name was Woods, not Wood (although the other three or so other entries indicate Wood). Further, Blayton, as well as his brothers Edward, James, Joseph, Thomas and William (plus father Thomas) all show up on page 96 of the 1790 Orange County Census...all with last name Woods with the "s." This is clearly the family of Thomas and Mary. So there is a starting point. Regarding the brothers Henry (b 1766) and Edward (b1760). I believe Edward died early, as there are no records in the United States for an Edward Woods (for 20 or so years) after the 1790 census. That leaves Henry. No entry for 1790, but in 1800 he shows up in Sampson County NC, page 516. (again the only Henry Head of Household in NC) The entry indicates he would be between 30 and 40 years old, which would generally match his date of birth. In 1820, Henry seems to show up in Burke County. Then he drops off the lists completely (and forever) by 1830. But in 1830 (Burke) Mary appears on page 180. I think she might be Henry's widowed wife. Also on page 180 in 1830 (Burke) is a William, a James on page 141, and a Joseph on page 142. This could well be the sons of Mary and Henry. In any event, since the Woods with an "s" continued with his male children -- all of them as far as I can tell -- I can only venture to guess that perhaps there was a transcription error in Thomas' will, or a typesetting error when it was abstracted. As this is food for thought anyway, I would enjoy hearing your comments. And by the way, did you ever determine who Thomas' (b abt 1730) father might have been? Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    3. Chuck: I looked through the few pages that I have of "The WOODS Family Index", by John Summer Wood, Sr. A Given Name Index 1966 (I believe this is out of print now) and on page 271 there is a John H. Woods son of Samuel & _____; b. 17--; of Albermarle Co. VA, (D.A.R. Mag. 1915),1916). I hope this helps..maybe it will give you a place to look in VA. Sorry, but I only have a few pages of this marvelous book. Maybe someone else in the group has access to the whole book and can help you further. Samuel is Samuel Woods number 106. I do not have any pages with Samuels' listed! 3. I am searching for any information on Tomptom and Matilda (Spicer) Wood in the Wilkes County NC. area. This couple raised four children or more in the Trap Hill area. William H. Wood, one of these children married a Higgins from that area. This was his first wife. I think that this couple had a family of two before the mother died. One of these, Frank (?) drowned in the Roaring River near his home. (Swep from a foot bridge during flood conditions.) The other son Tomas Avery Wood grew up in the same area. He Lost an arm in an accident while feeding cain into the machine. he was seven years old at the time. He grew up amd married a Higgins also. Probably a distant relative of his mother's. Tomas moved his wife and four children either to Colorado or Wyoming around 1896. He worked on various work projects such as the roads in Yellowstone National Park. Tomas and his wife were divorced prior to 1916 because Tomas has moved back to WV. and married a second time. During and prior to this, his father had moved to WV. and remarried a second time. Can any one help me with all the blanks? Is there any connections in the North Carolins area? Is this any of your WOOD family? Thanks for any help. Darrell
