    1. Re: [WOODS-L] Wood/Woods Bibliography (long)
    2. George W. Page
    3. Probably the best authorities on the Woods families of Colonial Penn. are the Hickock brothers who spent many years researching the family and then writing about it [Charles Nelson Hickock, who was a Life Member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, "The Hickock Genealogy" (Rutland, VT: The Tuttle Publishing Co., Inc., 1938), pp. 432-446.] He lists the children of George and Rosanna (Hall) Woods who were married in Ireland as: i. George Woods, d. Oct. 1796 who m. Jane McDowell. (He was the surveyor of Pittsburgh, Militia Col. & Judge) ii. Hugh Woods, emigrated to America. iii Edward Woods, emigrated to America. iv. Alexander Woods, emigrated to America and settled in the western part of U.S. probably western Penn. v. Robert Woods, remained in Ireland, m. his cousin, Margaret Hall. vi. William Woods, remained in Ireland and m. Rebecca Birney; he d. comparatively young, and had two sons: George and Edward. (A letter from Dungannon, county Tyrone, Ireland dtd. 23 March 1801). vii. Rose Ann Woods. m. Francis Kirkpatrick, he was brother of Nat or Matt Kirkpatrick. This same author shows Thomas Woods, d. May 1793, m. in Ireland, Agnes; He kept a tavern in Bedford, Penn. and traded with the Indians. In 1787 he lived in Providence Twp. (Near present-day Everett) in Bedford Co., Penn. His will is dated 27 Mar. 1792 and proved 18 July 1783. It names his wife, Agnes; his children: Sarah wife of Robert Bradshaw; Rose wife of Hugh Means; Nancy wife of John Culbertson; Margaret wife of Thomas Collins; a son Thomas; a son George living at Hendrick's Farm in Westmoreland Co., PA; sons, John and Joseph; and Robert a natural son of his daughter. The sister of Thomas Woods is shown by Hickock to be my Rebecca Woods; and the author shows them both to be the children of John Woods who emigrated to America with his brother George (who m. Rosanna Hall) from Dungannon, Ireland (Ulster) before 1733. Other info on the Woods family is incorporated into the lineage of John and Mary (Espy) Woods and Col. David and Jane (Woods) Espy in a book ["The Espy-Espey Genealogy Book with Branch Lines and Allied Families," Vol. 2, George Chapter II by Rita Espy Kuhbander and William G. Espy (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1987)] and from Ruby Wigley Pullman, CHARLOTTE M. BRETT, Lois M. Postel, Gloria Sutcliffe; and from Joseph L. Delafield, "Genealogies of Penn. Families" published by the Genealogical Publishing Co. note that there are discrepancies! The Espy book does not show the descendants of George Woods, b. in 1740, but it does for 11a. John Woods, b. 1742, 11b. William Woods, b. 1747; and 11c. Anna Woods, b. 1753 all shown to be children of John and Mary (Espy) Woods. It states that John Woods was b. c. 1720 in Ireland, d. 1769; m. Mary Espy, b. 1722. It further states that John Woods was the son of Andrew Woods b.c. 1690 in Blair Park, Ulster, Ireland and d. Aug. 1756 in Lancaster, Penn. He and his wife Sarah, who was b. in Ireland may have had 9 children, three of whom were John, and perhaps, Jane, and perhaps George. Jane Woods who m. Col. David Espy and lived in Bedford, Penn. was probably the daughter of Col. George & Jane (McDowell) Woods also of Bedford, Penn.. George W. 3. Pink BREALEY m Samuel M. SULLIVAN around 1890-1900. Their son was Will M. SULLIVAN b March 23, 1900 in Russellville, Pope, AR On his birth certificate, his mother signed her name, Mrs. Pink Woods. Where it asked if the child was legitimate, it was marked yes. The father was listed as Samuel Sullivan. I was told that Pink or Pinky was Cherokee Indian. This is all the information that i have on my mothers grandparents. Has anyone heard of Mrs. Pink BREALEY Woods? Also, this is my first ever post. Hope I am doing this correct. Did print out the instructions that came today and tried to follow them. 1. [WOODS-L] New Member
    2. Hi to all, I am a new member to this mailing list and thought I should introduce myself and let everyone know who I am looking for. My name is Carrie Pierce and I am tracing my family tree on both my mother and father's side as well as tracing my husbands fathers side of the family - quite a bit of tracing. As to who I am looking for I have the following information: My grandfathers name is Oliver Junior Woods born to Oliver Andy Woods and Dorothy Marie Maloy on January 23, 1930 in Union City, Darke County, Ohio. My great grandfather was Oliver Andy Woods born to Harry C. Woods and Mamie Mary Edith Kissinger on February 17, 1909 in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. He married Dorothy Marie Maloy on February 17, 1930 in Union City, Darke County, Ohio. He died on April 24, 1977 at Lehigh Acres General Hospital in Lehigh Acres, Lee County, Florida. My great-great grandfather was Harry C. Woods born to Thomas L. Wood (Woods) and Laura Nibarger on April 7, 1885 in Redkey, Richland Township, Jay County, Indiana. He married Mamie Mary Edith Kissinger on August 17, 1906 in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. He died on July 16, 1945 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. My great-great-great grandfather was Thomas L. Wood (Woods) born to Isaac Wood and Delilia (Anderson - we think) on July 21, 1859 in Jay County, Indiana. He married Laura Nibarger on May 27, 1880 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana. He died on April 13, 1900 in Jay County, Indiana. My great-great-great-great grandfather was Isaac Wood born to John Wood and Elizabeth Landes (Landis) about 1834 in Ohio. He married Delilia about 1857-1858. He died about 1878 in Jay County, Indiana. Most of this information I received from my aunt - and I'm not sure where she obtained the information. Would love to find a family connection. I do have other information on children but think I am taking up too much space now. Please if you think we may have a connection contact me. Thank You Carrie Pierce

    2. J. L. WOOD
    3. Dear Carla, Thank you greatly for the additional info. It is interesting that the Jesse WOOD you mentioned b. 1804 in VA was a minister. My g-grandfather, Jesse Lee WOOD b. 1839, became a Methodist Episcopal (North) minister 1868 in TN and his father's name was possibly Jesse. However, I don't believe my family has any ties to Minnesota. There is a large, prominent WOOD Family line that I researched in England (and one branch went to Ireland). Family hearsay said that my WOOD line was related so, hoping to find my Family roots, I tried to identify the immigrant ancestor and thought I could work backwards but I never could. Does the manuscript give more information about the specific Families (e.g., parents) and locations in England where the immigrants that you mentioned came from? Thank you again for all your help. 1. [WOODS-L] Addendum to W/W Manuscript
    2. Pages 1 and 2 of the typewritten addendum to the manuscript were posted previously. The material below is from pages 3 and 4. I will type it as exactly as possible from the original, with as few changes in format as possible. There are many blanks, shown by (?), which are illegible on the copy found at my local library. It, itself, was mimeographed, and had probably faded over time. The format is confusing, and I apologize for that, but the copy I'm transcribing from is equally confusing. The writer mentions several different publications during the notes, which are in very rough form. Still, they may provide a clue, or at least point to a source, for someone. There will be one more post which consists of a Bible record, which contains mostly Wood and Pickering names, of a New York family which moved to Illinois. 1. [WOODS-L] Excerpts from W/W Manuscript
    2. Dear Jack Wood and Renee Rodriques: Thank you so much for your kind notes. The main difficulty in using the manuscript for clues is chiefly because the latest dates it mentions are pre-Revolutionary, and even then, there are a great many Wood/Woods who were in America at that time. I haven't been able to get back beyond 1810 with my own Samuel Wood/s, and can't connect him with anyone with any certainty. In response to both your notes, I re-read the manuscript, looking for mention of family branches which migrated to the south, and below are the excerpts which specifically mentioned individuals who landed first in Virginia (possibly having descendants who migrated southward). The following appears below exactly as in the original copy, with no changes in spelling, punctuation or form. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------------- "The brothers William, Michael, James and Andrew Woods, before mentioned immigrants to Pennsylvania and the South, came over about 1724. Of these brothers, the first made his home in North Carolina and was the father of John, William, Samuel, Elizabeth and Mary; and the second, Michael Woods, resided in Albemarle County, Va., and is said to have had issue by his wife, Mary Campbell, of six sons, Richard, William, Michael, John, Archibald, and Andrew, as well as of five daughters, including Magdalena, Margaret, and Sarah. Descendants of this line resided in Rockbridge County, Va., whence some removed to the West and Southwest." "Robert Woods, possibly related to the last-mentioned immigrants, settled in Charlotte County, Va., before 1730. he was the father by his wife, Elizabeth Middleton, of John, Middleton, George, Robert, Hugh, Josiah, and several daughters. This family settled at an early date in Franklin County, Va., whence many of its descendants removed to Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky." "About the year 1750 Nehemiah, Asa, and James Wood, brothers, came from England to Virginia and settled, respectively, in the Shenandoah Valley, in Stafford County, and in Frederick County. Of these, Nehemiah had four sons, Benjamin, John, Joshua, and David, some of whose descendants settled in Missouri; while James is said to have been the grandfather of John Wood, first Governor of Illinois." "Alexander Woods, who was born in Tyrone County, Ireland, came to America in 1790 and settled first at Hanover, in Dauphin County, Pa., later removing to Kentucky and then to Ohio. He married Mary Robinson in 1794 and their children were John, Samuel, James, Jane, Alexander, Mary and William." - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------------------------------- Best regards, Carla W. 1. RE: [WOODS-L] Wood/Woods Bibliography (long)
    2. J. L. WOOD
    3. Dear Carla, Thank you so much and may God bless you for sharing the information on the WOOD/WOODS Bibliography and Addendum. I'm sure it will help many and I hope it will help me in finding a clue to the parents and/or siblings of my g-grandfather, Rev./Dr. Jesse Lee(Leonidas?) WOOD. I am running out of time due to chronic health problems in trying to reach my goal of being able to leave a family history as a legacy to my Family. Jesse was reportedly b. 1839 in MS and I believe his family may have been farming there at the time. However, Jesse doesn't show up until age 21 years on the 1860 Census in rural Dyer Co., TN and he lived much of his adult life in TN. The only thing I know about his family is that although Jesse enlisted in the 7th Tennessee Cavalry Reg., U.S. Army, he had three brothers (names unknown) that fought for the CSA in the War. His parents were reportedly also born in MS and his father's name may possibly have been Jesse. The Surnames AYLMORE/ELMORE(sp?), BRAZEAL/ BREAZEALE(sp?) and/or ESSARY may possibly be in our ancestry and Jesse may also have been part Indian. If you happen to run across any info. that you think might provide a lead, I would very much appreciate hearing from you and thanks again for all your help. Sincerely, Jesse Lee "Jack" WOOD, III Powell, OH (Formerly from TX) jwood1@mindspring.com

    1. [WOODS-L] Follow our SUBJECT LINE GUIDELINES
    2. Chris Lamesfield
    3. Dear WOODS list member: Please show respect for other WOODS list members by following these "subject" guidelines in all messages to the WOODS list. It will also help others who search the archives of the list as well as those who receive the messages in either Index or Digest mode. Not all subscribers have the time or energy to read all messages in search for that elusive match. Many, open only those which appear promising. MAXIMISE the chances of YOUR MESSAGE BEING READ BY YOUR INTENDED AUDIENCE, that is YOUR MATCH! HOW? Use the SUBJECT LINE to give very SPECIFIC DETAILS about the individual/family your are looking for. Subscribers to most other genealogy lists do precisely that. Furthermore, to facilitate reading, they tend to follow some sort of 'not so rigid format'. Examples: WOOD John, b1840, Miami, Florida, USA WOODWARD Timothy, m1790, SMITH E., in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil WOODY, Ray, Elaine, Susan, res. 1870, in Bs As, Argentina WOODS Joshua & Jessie, res. 1891, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada Notice the pattern? 1) SURNAME always in capital letter (even within the text of the email), then 2) First and Second names of individuals. Commas to separate individuals. 3) Date with a letter indicating whether it is birth, marriage, death, residing. Worthwhile, even if it is very broad. If someone is looking for WOODS in 1600s, they don't really mind if your 1800 date is off by some years. 4) Location, State, Country. In full, to reach those yet unfamiliar with the area and its abbreviations. Subscribers AVOID using subject lines that may not carry sufficient meaning to others, such as: Woods family My family My Woods My neck of the Woods Aim for QUALITY AUDIENCE: YOUR MATCH. These guidelines were created by: Jorge Woods, in Canberra, Australia. Thanx, Chris Lamefield WOODS list Owner/Moderator ==== WOODS Mailing List ==== Do NOT send messages to the WOODS list that are also sent "TO" or "CC"ed to others. If you must send messages to multiple private or list addresses do it using "BC" so the addresses cannot be harvested by spammers. I will permanently remove anyone who does not follow this rule.

    2. Sally Phillips
    3. It has been 6 months since my last post, so I'll try again: I'm looking for info regarding __?__ WOOD who was the 2nd husband of "Aunt Eva". Here's what I "know": Eva HICKS was born ca. 1865 in Readsboro, VT. Her first marriage was to Gregory(?)MCGREGORY; they had 2 children (according to a family photograph taken in Springfield, MA about 1893). The older one's name was Wayne, who was born 8 Jul 1888. Eva was living with him in the eastern part of MA when she died (obit isn't dated). Eva's second husband was _?_ WOOD. I have no information about him, whatsoever. That's where you come in. Please reply if you think you connect!! Eva's third husband was Ora KNOWLTON. My Mom has no recollection of him from her childhood, only Aunt Eva with the last name of Knowlton, living in Springfield, MA. That would have been in the '30's. Thanks in advance for your help! -Sally

    1. [WOODS-L] Addendum to The Name and Family of Wood or Woods
    2. Greetings: The manuscript in the previous post contains a four page, narrative addendum, with the following note at the beginning; "Wood data. The following is taken from records of my father John F. Lafferty (b. 1828 d. 1920) and his Uncle Rev. Aaron Wood (b. 1902 d. 1887) and his father's mother Lydia Wood Lafferty (b. 1810 d. 1903)" I'll do my best to convey this as clearly as possible, because it's from a blurry copy, and wasn't typed very neatly (my apologies to the typist). Hopefully, this will help a researcher with early roots in the American mid-Atlantic and midwestern states. This particular branch of the family did an excellent job of dispersing itself! (beginning) Three brothers came from England and one of them or his descendant settled in Virginia. Our ancestor Isaac Wood, lived in Pendleton County, Virginia. His wife was Rachel Ramey who descended from French Huguenot who also settled in Virginia. They had ten children. They were: 1: James Wood m. Elizabeth Gillespie 2: Elizabeth Wood m. Thomas Gillespie 3: Susan Wood m. 1st Leonard Miller 2nd John Strode or Stroud. 4th or 5th: Daniel Wood m. 1st Widow Carr 2nd Sarah Ramey 4th or 5th: John Wood m. 1st Elizabeth Harper 2nd Mary Hornbeck 6. Joel Wood m. 1797 1st Ann Miller 2nd Widow Lilley 7. William Wood b. 1781 m. in Virginia by Rev. Moses Hinkle Dec. 31, 1801 Mary Kahn, who was b. 1778 York, Pennsylvania. 8. Ann Wood m. 1797 Michael Miller 9. Isaac Wood m. Ellen ---------- 10. Jacob Wood m. Rachel Ramey * The Millers were brothers and sister. * Daniel and Jacob Wood both married their cousins, Sarah and Rachel Ramey. James and Elizabeth were Presbyterians; moved to Tennessee. Susan and her husband were Baptist; moved to Kentucky. John was Methodist. Daniel was a Baptist-- married his cousin and moved to Indiana. Isaac Wood married and moved to Indiana. Jacob Wood married his cousin and moved to Washington Co., Indiana. William Wood married Mary Kahn in Virginia Dec. 31, 1801. William Wood was b. June 1, 1781 in Pendleton Co., Virginia (now West Virginia) They and Michael Kahn and his wife Mary Schenck Kahn were first in Ross Co., Ohio then in Champaign Co. Michael Kahn, his wife and son Henry, William Wood and son Wesley Wood were all buried on their farm which i believe is part of a cemetery now. Two of William Woods' children, Aaron, b. 1802 and Jesse, b. 1804, were born in Virginia. Enoch b. 1805 in Ohio. A marker was placed at their graves in 1881 by Aaron Wood, son of William Wood. William Wood died Nov. 23, 1834 in Ohio. Mary Kahn Wood died Sept. 18, 1854 and is buried here at Martinsville, Illinois. They went to Ohio about 1805. They (William Wood and Mary Kahn) were married by the Rev. Moses Hinkle in Virginia). My great-grandfather William Wood preached my great-grandfather John Lafferty's funeral in 1822. William Wood and Mary Kahn Wood had the following children: Aaron Wood was born in Virginia March 24, 180(?) Jesse Wood was born in Virginia 1804. (Father's records has Pendleton Co., Va., but records his cousin sent me just has Virginia. I think Pendleton is right). Enoch G. Wood born in (illegible) Jan. 6, 1806. Wesley b. in 1807 Lydia Wood b. July 15, 1810 died in Martinsville, Ill July 1902 (this was my grandmother Lafferty) Mary Ann Wood b. in (illegible) July 12, 1810 m. Hezekiah (???) Henderson. He was her second husband. Moses Wood b. in (??) August 23, 1814 Rachel Wood b. Nov. 17, 1817 in Champaign Co., Ohio m. George M. Bennett in Mt. Carnell, Illinois All of these son were ministers. Wesley died in Ohio. Aaron and Enoch and Moses in Illinois and Indiana. Jesse went to Minnesota, the Bennetts to Corvalis, Oregon. I have their records down three and four generations. Aaron Wood had two sons who were missionaries. Thomas B. Wood was head of a Methodist school in Lima, Peru. All of them were of some note. (end of pages 1 and 2 of narrative manuscript addendum to The Name And Family of Wood or Woods) There are three more pages of this to transcribe, and I will try to get them posted shortly. Best regards to all, Carla Wheeler Woods Marietta, Georgia

    1. [WOODS-L] Wood/Woods Bibliography (long)
    2. Greetings: I have given up on determining the ancestry of my "stuck" Elbert County, Georgia WOODS, person for the time being, but thought some of you might be interested in the following bibliography which appeared in the back of a manuscript I found at the Cobb County, Georgia Public Library's genealogy room. Many of the sources are from the 1800's; it's my guess (and it's only a guess) that this manuscript is a typewritten transcription of an earlier work which could have been done anywhere between 1870 and 1950. The writer's style is very formal, and typical to that period. I will type the bibliography of the work below exactly as it appears in the manuscript, with no eliminations, abbreviations, or changes. The manuscript is on copy paper, and is in a buff-colored report cover. The date stamped on it as to when it was placed in the library is June 6, 1990. The manuscript itself makes for interesting reading, and I have a complete copy. I'm willing to do lookups, although please note that the names noted in its sixteen single-spaced pages date are those of almost two hundred years ago. It didn't provide any trails for me to follow, so to speak. That's it for this post. Stay out of this heat, ya'll. Best regards, Carla W. Woods (great-great-granddaughter-in-law of Samuel Wood(s) of Elbert, Newton, and Fulton County, Georgia, and we SURE do welcome all information as to his forebearers!)

    3. Has anyone ever determined identified the parentage of following family group. I know they are not sons of Michael Woods of Blair Park. His son Richard married, I believe, a Jennie, or something similar. In any event, the following seem to be of record in both Albemarle and Augusta Counties. James Woods (patented land on Stockton's Creek In Albemarle Co c1749) Wife UNK. Children: UNK Samuel d 1784 (lived near James, one of the original purchasers of lots in Charlottesville) Wife: UNK. Samuel McDowell and Richard Woods' bond (with David Stewart), as guardian (appointed) to Samuel, Arthur, Esther, Elizabeth, and Charles Woods, orphans of Charles Woods. The orphan Charles seems to have survived, showing up on the both the 1810 and 1820 Orange County Censuses. Also, I recently received this information: In DEATH and MARRIAGE NOTICES OF THE HILLSBOROUGH RECORDER 1820-1879; HILLSBOROUGH, NORTH CAROLINA Complied by SHIRLEY JONES MALLARD there is a marriage abstract on Page 47 as follows: 18 Nov 1829 Vol X #507 Married - CHARLES WOODS, 81, of the Revolutionary army, to MRS. MARGARET MACKLIN, 55, in this place, Thursday 5th inst, by THOMAS CLANCY. Charles is not enumerated on the 1830 Orange County Census. 1. [WOODS-L] Charles Woods [Orange Co NC] 1810-1820
    2. Brett Woods
    3. Looking for information on the Charles Woods who shows up on the 1810 (p176) and 1820 (p302) Orange County NC Censuses. In Orange County, he appears to have married a "Beddy" Lynch on 11 March 1812; and then a Margaret Maclain on 6 Nov 1829. Perhaps Beddy died? After his enumeration on the 1820 Census, he seems to have disappeared from view. However, the following four individuals, due to their close proximity in both 1810 and 1820, are probably somehow connected: Thomas, William, Sampson and Joseph Woods. Any ideas out there? Brett F. Does anyone have any idea of their children' names, or what happened to them? Thanks for any input.. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    1. [WOODS-L] Woods, Lynch and Fox Families TN circa 1840-70
    2. Brett Woods
    3. I was wondering if someone could offer some insight into the following families, and perhaps help me straighten out some of the familial relationships. And please indulge me, as this seems rather confusing. 1. In Jefferson County TN, on 11 Oct 1859, Elizabeth Ann Fox married an Elihu Lynch. 2. In Williamson County TN, on 2 Feb 1843, Nancy Fox married a Joseph Woods. 3. On the 1880 Greene County TN census my ggrandfather James H. Woods (b SC ABT 1847) is shown with a wife Elizabeth Fox (b TN ABT 1840). Also living in the household (and indicated to be a sister-in-law) was a Mary Fox (b. TN ABT 1846). Elizabeth and Mary are the daughters of Isaac Fox (b TN ABT 1796) and Rachael Craddick. Isaac's father was Andrew Fox (b. Culpepper VA ABT 1742). Keep in mind that the names Elizabeth and Nancy seem to run rampant throughout the Fox family. 4. Now, the final stroke. James H. Woods' oldest sister was named "Lynch" Woods, (b Spartanburg SC abt 1846). Both James' and Lynch's father was a Henry J. Woods (b ABT 1826 in NC). Their mother (last name unknown) was known both as Mary H and Polly on later censuses. Perhaps she was a Lynch? I haven't a clue. In any event, if anyone knows anything about this group, please let me know. Since Henry is my gggrandfather, I really would appreciate any information that may help me identify his parentage. Thanks for any assistance. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico
