Hi Jennifer: I would like to help you tie-in your William Woods to the rest of the clan. Perhaps with some more info we can come up with some possibilities and rule-out other possible leads: 1. Can you provide any of the names of his children (Thomas, Henry, George, William, and/or John; and Rebecca, Agnes, and/or Nancy?) as well as the first name of Susan (Mary?) Baltzell's father? 2. Are you positive about the year and county of William's birth as Aug. 1817 in Westmoreland Co., PA? What is the source of this important evidence? 3. Do you have any names of William's siblings, or any other info yet from your query? 4. Did William live in any other county in PA (or OH) before he ended-up and married in Knox Co., OH; and did he live the remainder of his life in Knox Co.? George W. Hi Russell & List, I ran across a Robert W. WOODS who married Elizabeth ? in Coosa County, AL. I don't know if he is the son of our William WOODS and Susanna MECKLIN. There were a number of SC families that moved on to AL. Perhaps Robert was among them. My line is through Robert's brother, John WOODS and Pheraby GLOVER. They ended up in Pulaski County, GA. BTW, does anyone have any information on William's wife, Susanna MECKLIN? This is from VA Genealogies # 2 l600-l800, Vol. l In the parish register of Leonardstown, Md., were recorded the births of the children of James Wood, who imigrated to Maryland prior to l689. His sons were James, John, Gillam, Samuel, Peter, Benjamin, Joseph, Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. Gillam had a son Leonard, who had an only dau. Patsy, living in l838. In l838 there appeared an advertisment for the heirs of Isaac Wood, a lunatic in England, whose grandfather, Clement Wood was believed to have settld in Virgtinia about l748; anotherr son Clement Wood, a cousin of the lunatic, settled in Virginia in l784. John Baker and Judith, his wife had a dau. Susannah, who married. first James Wood, of Botetourt Co., Va. and had: James, Stanhope, and Fonrose. She married second, James Tapscott, the immigrant of English descent, and had Baker Tapscott who married Ellen Morrow B aker, his cousin. Vol. III Abraham Wood came to Virginia in l620 as a little boy of ten years in the Margaret and John, commanded by Capt. Anthony Chester. In l625 he was living at Jamestown in the employment of Capt. Samuel Mathews. He became a member of the House of Burgesses, a member of the council an in l67l was one of the four major general commanding the military establishment of Virginia. In l646 he was made captain of Fort Henry and in l658 was colonel of the militia of Charles City and Henrico counties. The land at Fort Henry, with all the houses, boats and ammunition belonging therto was granted to Captin Wood, on the condition that for 3 years he should keep up a garrison there for the defence of the colony. In l680 he negotiated a treaty with the Indians . He died soon after. Major Peter Jones was put in command of 57 men from Elizabeth City, Warwick, andf James City counties. All though there is not direct proof, he is almost certin that he married a daughter of General Wood. He occupied the same land, and by the constancy in which the names Abraham and Wood have reappeared among his descendants. Major Jones had sons which were named Abraham and Peter. One was Lt. Abaraham Jones whose land adjoined the land of Major General Abraham Wood. Note : A second son of Edmund Chamberlayne of Maugersubry "Thomas of Virginia, who married Mary, daughter of Abraham Wood of Virginia. Deed dated Feb l686-7 from Thomas Chamberlayne and Mary his wife, dau of Maj. Gen. Abraham Wood, was conveyed to George Archer and Joseph Royall.land which hadf been devised them by General Wood. The first deed was dated July l8, l675 , conveying land from Wood to Chamberlayne. These notes may be of help to some other researcher. DEE 6465@aol.com

I recently came across a message I copied from this list in December of 1998. It was from Bettie Wood and referred to two Wood families in Kentucky. I have been trying to contact her at the address she gave mailto:bettiew@internetwork.net; however, mail I have sent her has bounced with the note that she is an unknown user. If anyone has a good address for her please send it to me. Merrill Reich mreich@rocsoft.net
Does anyone have any information on the Wood(s) family of Goochland County VA? I received a note that the following Wood(s) names all show up in Goochland County on a 1740 Virginia Census: John, William, Hugh. Henry and Thomas. It seems that a Hugh Wood(s) received one of the first land grants in Orange County NC in 1753. The land was on the south side of the Eno River. Orange became a county in, I believe, 1752. I'm unsure if he was living there prior to receiving the grant. Thanks for any help. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico
