    1. [WOODS-L] WOODS, William, Orange Co, NC b. 1835
    2. Renee Roderiques
    3. Looking to fill in the gaps on the following family line: William W. WOODS, born Feb 1835 in ?, died March 20, 1918 in Durham, NC. Married Martha L. CLINTON, born 1838 in Orange Co., NC, died Feb 28, 1913. They married in Orange Co., Jan 1858 with A. Wilkerson as a witness. Martha was the daughter of Rachel VICKERS and Jesse CLINTON. Children of William W. and Martha Clinton WOODS: * Harris WOODS born 1860 (per Orange Co. 1860 Census) * ? WOODS died prior to 1900 (per 1900 Orange CO Census) * ? WOODS died prior to 1900 (per 1900 Orange CO Census) * Jesse Harrison WOODS, born June 8, 1860 in Orange Co., NC, died Sept 27, 1935 in Durham, NC. Buried Rose of Sharon Cemetery in Durham, NC. Married (1) Martha Ella Pickett on Dec 12, 1880. Married (2) Ada Dollar on Sep 15, 1918 * Ailsey C. WOODS (female) born about 1861 * Lou WOODS (female) born about 1868 * Joseph R. WOODS, born Sep 5, 1870, died June 18, 1923 in Durham Co.NC (Are Harris and Jesse the same person? Or could they have been twins?) Jessee Harrison WOODS married Martha Ella PICKETT (daughter of Elbert Washington PICKETT and Martha Helon RIGSBEE) on Dec 12, 1880. Martha Helon RIGSBEE died 1916 in Durham Co., NC. Children of Jesse Harrison and Martha Ella Picket WOODS (all born in Durham Co., NC): * Unknown WOODS, born and died prior to 1900 per 1900 census. * William Washington Woods, Sr. born Oct 26, 1882, died Apr 22, 1968 in Guilford Co., NC. Married Lillie or Lizzie DICKERSON in 1923. * Irena WOODS born Oct 1887. Married L. W. JONES prior to 1915. * Effie C. WOODS, born July 1890. Married ? DICKERSON. Died between 1910 and 1935. * Hubert Lee Woods, born Dec 19, 1892, died April 12, 1948 in Durham, NC. Married Ethel Mary CARRINGTON on Nov 23, 1911. * Della WOODS, born April 1, 1895. Married E. (Evlyn?) WILKINS. * Stella WOODS, born April 1, 1895. Died June 14, 1919. Married L. G. or J. G. LATTA. (Probably died from complications of childbirth. Buried next to baby whose birth and death dates are June 13, 1919) * Berbie B. WOODS, born March 1898. Married Annie TAYLOR. * Martha Espie WOODS, born after 1900. Married ? CHAMBERS. Children of Jesse and Ada Dollar WOODS: * Clara Bell WOODS, born Jan 1920. Married James MORRIS * Baby Boy WOODS, born and died May 1, 1922. According to Jesse WOODS' obit in 1935: "He was survived by his wife: Mrs. Ada Woods, 2 sons: W. W. and H. L. Woods, 2 daughters: Mrs. Espie Chambers and Miss Clara Bell Woods, and 1 sister: Mrs. J. W. Pool all of Durham County. Then, in Hubert WOODS' obit in 1948: "He is survived by his wife: Ethel Carrington, daughter: Mrs. Harry Hutchins, 3 sons: Crawford, Vernon, and Herbert all of Durham, 1 sister Eppie Woods of Washington, D. C. and 1 brother William H. Woods of Durham" I think it is not unreasonable to assume (at least until death certs, etc can be gathered) that all Jesse Woods' children from his first marriage -- except William, Hubert and Espie - died prior to 1935. I am curious about Espie (Eppie) emerging in the latter obit as a WOODS again.

    2. Brett Woods
    3. Looking for information on the Charles Woods who died 1761 in Augusta County, Virginia. Augusta County Court Records indicate that Samuel McDowell and Richard Woods were appointed as guardians to Charles' children: Samuel, Arthur, Elizabeth, Esther and Charles, Jr. (b ABT 1748). Narrowing the field: (1) I have found reference that the Charles who died in 1761 was married to Elizabeth Campbell, the daughter of a Gilbert Campbell, and I understand Gilbert was the brother of Mary Campbell who married Michael Woods of Blair Park.. (NOTE: Gilbert's Will dated 29 August 1750 in Augusta County, clearly indicates an Elizabeth Woods. She is separate and independent from his daughter Lattice who later married a John Woods...I have John's Will abstract also (1790 - Washington County VA) indicating a spouse Lattice). (2) The above mentioned guardian Samuel McDowell is the son of Magdelena Woods and John McDowell. Magdelena is the daughter of Mary Campbell and Michael Woods of Blair Park. (3) The above mentioned guardian Richard Woods is the son of Michael Woods of Blair Park and Mary Campbell. He married a "Jenny" Unknown. When Boutecourt County was created circa 1760, Richard became it's first High Sheriff. There is a record of Charles' orphan son Arthur working as a deputy sheriff for Richard in 1770. Now, since the Charles Woods who died in 1761 was clearly connected to both Michael Woods' family, as well as the McDowells and Campbells, does anyone have any clues as to who his parents might be? Is it possible that Charles was yet another child of Michael Woods of Blair Park and Mary Campbell? The fact that he still had minor children in 1760 seems to indicate that he was not a contemporary of Michael, but rather of Magdelena and Richard's generation. And if he is not the son of Michael Woods, then whose son might he be? Thanks for any suggestions. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    1. [WOODS-L] Lee Wood Search
    2. No great nor small gains have been made in my search for my father Lee Wood, b. 1926. I believe he has changed his name, moved out of the country, gone to prison, died, became a Priest; he might be hiding is a cult commune, or some combination. The hard data is that he was born in 1926, he used the name Lee Wood during his brief tour with the Army Air Corp in San Antonio, Texas; his name is on my 9/13/44 birth certificate, he played tennis in high school; and he had/has blue eyes, blond hair and olive skin tone. Is there a listing of male children born in 1926? Is there a listing of WOOD male children born in 1926? Any leads, no matter how small, will be appreciated. Sincerely, hileewood@aol.com

    1. [WOODS-L] Matthew Woods (Rowan County ca 1750)
    2. Brett Woods
    3. Robert Ramsey’s Book, Carolina Cradle: Settlement of the Northwest Carolina Frontier 1747-1762, pages 120-121, mentions the WOODS family and associates them with the COCHRANs, LITTLEs, and PATTONs. He cites the will of Andrew WOODS of Hanover Township, Lancaster County, PA, who died in 1756 and had two daughters who moved to Rowan County. [NOTE: this Andrew (d1756) is also the father of the Andrew and John indicated below, as well as Sarah and Margaret] These daughters were Sarah who married Samuel COCHRAN and lived on Coldwater Creek and Margaret who married Robert PATTON. This Robert PATTON was the brother of William PATTON, several of whose sons and daughters settled along Coldwater Creek. Elizabeth PATTON, one of the daughters married John BRANDON. Ramsey also indicates that, "Matthew WOODS, sometime between 1752 and 1757, acquired Charles Burnett’s tract on the headwaters of Grant’s Creek and then sold it in 1757 to Robert WOODS..." This is where the inconsistency seemingly emerges. Which Matthew might this be? According to most estimates (and these may be completely wrong) the Matthew who was the son of Andrew Jr. (d1761) and Jean (Ferguson?) would have only been between 12 and 17 years of age if Andrew were born in 1716 and married Jean in 1740 or so. The second Matthew (the son of John Woods and Mary Espy) would have probably only been younger, as he was supposedly born in 1718. The question: Is the Matthew who acquired Charles Burnett's land the grandson (through Andrew Jr. or John) of the Andrew Woods who died in Lancaster PA in 1756, or is he yet another Matthew? Thanks for any comments. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico Brett Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    3. Hi George and list: Thanks! >1. Can you provide any of the names of his children (Thomas, Henry, George, >William, and/or John; and Rebecca, Agnes, and/or Nancy?) as well as the >first name of Susan (Mary?) Baltzell's father? William and Susan (Baltzell) Woods' six children were Joseph, b 1845 OH; Timothy, b 1847 OH; Eunice Jane, b 1850 OH; Hester Annie, b 1853 IN; William H., b 1857 IA; and Edward D., b 1861 IA. Unfortunately, I don't have the names of Susan's parents, although a Joseph and Lydia Baltzell are buried in Bladensburg Cemetery, Knox Co, Ohio, and I would like to suspect that they are Susan's parents. >2. Are you positive about the year and county of William's birth as Aug. >1817 in Westmoreland Co., PA? What is the source of this important evidence? I am not positive about the year and county of William's birth. Census gives birthplace as PA. The source of his birthdate and county of Washington, PA, was the book "History of Fremont County, Iowa", 1881, which included a biographical sketch about him, giving birthplace & date (year consistent in censuses), and naming wife Susan and names of their six children (also verified in censuses). >3. Do you have any names of William's siblings, or any other info yet from >your query? At this time, I don't have any names for William's siblings or parents, nor is there other information resulting from the query. >4. Did William live in any other county in PA (or OH) before he ended-up >and married in Knox Co., OH; and did he live the remainder of his life in >Knox Co.? According to his biographical sketch, he left PA with his parents at age 4 (which would be about 1821), and grew to adulthood in Knox Co., OH, learning the shoemaker trade. In 1850 (after daughter Eunice Jane Woods was born), he moved to Indiana (county currently unknown--I wonder if he made it into that census, in addition to the 1850 one for Knox Co., OH). In 1853 he and his family moved to Webster Co, IA, and in 1856 to Fremont Co, IA. His appeared to be the only WOODS family in Webster Co (from state census). He and his family were found in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses in Fremont Co, IA. "The History of Fremont County, Iowa" listed other WOODS families, but they were not born in the same states he lived in during his early years, and I did not see a connection. William's wife Susan is buried in an unmarked grave in Thurman Cemetery, Fremont Co, IA. Their son William H. Woods is also buried there. But I can't locate a grave record for my William Woods. I still need to check the death index for Iowa. Sons Joseph and Timothy Woods, and daughter Eunice Jane (Woods) Donnelly moved to Kansas by 1880. I have not located where daughter Hester Annie went. Sons William H. and Edward D. Woods (who married an Eva Baltzell) appeared to have stayed in Iowa. Jennifer
