I rec'd the following in response to a query to Sullivan county Indiana. This is the family of Henry Wood (son of Richard & Rachel Cockram) married Nancy Bryant. In a message dated 9/18/99 9:15:46 AM EST, jprince@cwv.net writes: > > I am researching the Wood family of Virginia. Supposedly a Henry Wood went west late 1700's to early 1800's and his nephew Henry Wood to Sullivan County Indiania. I wonder if you have info on a Henry Wood family? > visit my Raleigh County, WV homepage > http://spitfire.cwv.net/~jprince/ > Hi Judy, Yes, there is a bio on Henry WOOD in the 1884 book, page 785. The following is typed exactly as written. "HENRY WOOD is a native of Virginia, born January 3, 1824, being the second of seven children born to Henry and Nancy (Bryant) Wood, who emigrated to Clay County, Ind., in 1836, they removing two years later to Sullivan County. July 13, 1848, our subject married Almarena Rundle, daughter of Jared and Martia (Clark) Rundle, who were natives of the State of New York, who came to Indiana in 1818. He was an early teacher, and died in 1833. By this union, Mr. Wood has had seven children born to him, six of whom are living -- Elvira, wife o George R. Tilford, of Kansas; Maria, wife of William D. Tilford; John, a teacher; Nannie B., Carrie and Ed H. Mr. Wood's two daughters, Nannie and Carrie, are engaged in teaching in Merom. Mr. Wood served for a period of seven months as a member of Company C, One Hundred and Thirty-fifth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, being Sergeant. He and wife are members of the Universalist Church; is a Republican, and has been Justice of the Peace for seven years. He is now operating a cooper shop in Merom." There is another bio in the 1909 book on Walter F. WOOD, but there is no mention of a Henry. Walter's parents were Jesse A & Elizabeth (Jones) Wood. His grandfather was Lacy Wood. I will check some of the other books that I have and if I find any more on any Henry's I will let you know. And if you have any other questions, also let me know Judi ****************************************************** Hi Judy, I found some cemetery info in a cemetery book I have. Yesterday I forwarded a list of Wood (s) marriages for Wake Co. to this list in hopes that it might help someone find a link. I guess in my haste to share it, I plain forgot that not everyone is psychic and would automatically just KNOW which Wake County it was. :) This particular Wake County is Wake County, NC, which is located in north central NC. Wake was formed in 1770 from Johnston, Orange and (I believe) Cumberland Counties. Raleigh, the county seat and state capitol was founded about 1792. In 1881, Durham County was created from Western Wake and Eastern Orange Counties. Apologies on that - we native Tarheels can be so state-centric. <grin>

I would love to make contact with any Woods Family researcher who would have information on the family of Robert W Woods who is listed on both the 1830 and 1840 Censuses of Bibb County Alabama. Does anyone recognize this person ? Russell
Hi, My name is Jeffrey Alan WOODS and I am looking for my grandfather. My dad is dying of cancer and he wanted to talk to his father before he leaves us. There are a few things that never got said before. I have been looking for 3 or 4 months before I found out my dad was dying but they told me that he will be lucky to make it to christmas. I hope that someone can help me find my grandfather. My grandfather was born on 03/22/20 in Trenton NJ. He was born as John Robert WOODS Jr./II. His first wife was Helen Elaine WALKER (b.05/24/24). Last known wife; Pat or Patricia, and they had a son; Chris or Christopher WOODS (b. 03/18/70). They were last known to be living in Pacifica, California. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help in this matter of finding my grandfather before it is too late. Jeff A. Woods
After finding so many errors in the Woods-McAfee text, I thought I would take a look at the John Woods-Isabella Bruce information, particularly the question of who were John's parents. To this end, I have looked at the following material. I found the book entitled "The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland" that was published in the 1800s and is based upon the official records of the English Government. It contains numerous lists and charts and, as a practical matter, is very boring. This said, there are listed only 7 Wood (no s) "adventurers," as they were called. Further, the only John was in the "sea service." The others were: 1. a Robert or Richard of Harlow 2. an Edward 3. a Thomas who was a tailor from London 4. a Richard of Chesterfield 5. a Robert of London who was a "wax chandler," whatever that was. 6. another Robert who is described as "of Kingston, of Surry, Gentleman" As to why these individuals joined with Cromwell, there is a very detailed explanation that boils down to anybody who wanted to go could put up a bond of "x" amount of funds. These funds could them be used to to purchase some of the 2,500,000 acres of Irish land that were to be forfeited to those who put up the funding. According to the text: "The subscribers were to have estates and manors of one thousand acres given to them in Ireland at the following low rates: Ulster (200 pounds); Connaught (300 pounds), in Munster (450), and in Leinster for (600), and lands proportionately for less sums." In short, they were opportunists. The second issue revolves around an entry in yet another academic book entitled "The Scottish Migration to Ulster in the Reign of James I." There is a record, in 1609, of an Andrew Wood of Ayr, Scotland, who emigrated to Ireland. He had a brother named John who was from Geilston, outside of Edinburgh. Now the big question. Does anyone have a clue as to the identity of John's parents. I know there is the Yorshire reference, but I can find nothing to support other than Woods-Mcafee and the Miller text and a few others. And all of them simply restate the same thing. It seems to me that the Woodses had to be Scottish. If they weren't why were they so cozy with the Wallaces and the Campbell families. For that matter, there is even a record of a Wood Clan in Scotland. I personally feel that the John Wood who provided the "sea services" is probably the same John who married Isabella Bruce. I also think John is probably descendant of the Wood family of Fife, Scotland who, according to some, had land holdings in Yorkshire and Lancaster Counties, England. There were numerous John and Andrews in the family, including a few Archibalds, Thomases, Williams, Jameses , Andrews and the rest of the family names. But the generations seem to rotate between John and Andrew. They were also sea captain types, going back to Sir Andrew in the 1400s. This, I suppose, might connect with the John in the "sea service." I want to stress that don't claim to have all the answers, for that matter, I'm not even sure of the questions. I don't know who John's parents might be. But I would like to hear some other opinions. A few day ago I posted the following query to both the Woods and Campbell GenForum sites: Looking for information on the Charles Woods who died 1761 in Augusta County, Virginia. Augusta County Court Records indicate that Samuel McDowell and Richard Woods [with David Stuart] were appointed as guardians to Charles' orphan children: Samuel, Arthur, Elizabeth, Esther and Charles, Jr. (b ABT 1748). I have found one reference that the Charles who died in 1761 was married to Elizabeth Campbell, the daughter of a Gilbert Campbell. Does anyone know anything about Charles, Sr.? Since he was doubtless the brother of Richard Woods and somehow connected to the McDowells, Campbells and Stuarts, any ideas who might his parents have been? Thanks for any suggestions. I received this response on the Campbell site. Dear Mr. Woods, Charles' father was Michael Woods, Sr (b. 1684, in Ulster, N. Ireland. He died in 1762 in Albermarle Co., Va. He married Mary Campbell, who was born in 1688 in Scotland, died 1742 in Albemarle Co, Va. They had the following children: 1) Magdeline b. 1706, 2) Richard b. 1707, 3) Michael, Jr b. 1708, 4.) Hannah b. 1710, 5) John b. 1711, 6) Margaret b. 1714, 7.) William b.1715, 8.) Archibald b.1716, 9.) Martha b. 1718, 10.) Andrew b. 1720, 11.) Sarah b. 1723, 12.) Charles b. 1725. I have more information on Michael Woods. I also wrote a book titled: "The Campbell Family of Virginia." It lists who Mary Campbell's parents were. It goes back to the 13th century. I descend from Mary's brother, John. Sincerely Donald H. Campbell. As a practical matter, when you think about it - and considering the relationships of the guardians - this kind of makes sense. And the "orphan son" Samuel (probably the oldest) would have been born in about 1738-40. Arthur remained in Augusta/Botetourt County and became a deputy when his uncle Richard Woods became sheriff. Charles ended up in Orange County, still getting married in 1829 and still alive on the 1835 listing of Revolutionary Pensioners. But back to Samuel. Isn't there a Samuel Woods born about 1740 -- and I want to say in NC -- that is unable to be connected any particular line? I look forward to any comments. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico
Hi All! Sorry about leaving the address off, guess I was so excited I forgot the most important part. So here it is again. I finally got my family web pages to a point that I could load them onto the net. I don't promise anything, but it's a start. Please remember that a lot of the information comes from living family members and therefore is subject to change (as verification and confirmation occurs). Anyway, I hope to find some new cousins out there. So visit my pages and let me know what you think. http://www.concentric.net/~lmagel/family.html Thanks! And happy hunting to all. Linda
