After reviewing the online Chaukey's material, I ran across the entries that to relate to the following individuals who evidently left PA (moving to Augusta County) owing a Samuel Smith money. Although the suit appears to have eventually been settled, it raises some questions. These are the particular citations: NOTE: The "ditto" is with respect to the phrase "debtor to Samuel Smith" January 18. William Robinson's account, debtor to Samuel Smith, 1739 Richard Wood's ditto, ditto, 1738. Mrs. Margaret McDowell, ditto, 1737--June 14. Mrs. Mary McDowell, ditto, 1737--January 17, three yards ribbon to sister. Mr. Michael Woods, ditto, 1738--October 7, one dozen catechisms. 1739--Credit by six foxes, seven raccoons, and one beaver. Samuel Woods, ditto. 1734--11 1/4 yards masquerade, 31/; 7 1/2 yards sagathee, 32/6. 1735--June 26, credit by 36/ discounted with his son, Richard, by Michael Woods. Michael Woods, formerly of Pextunk, ditto, 1733--February 12; 1734--March 28. My question pertains to the Samuel Woods. Does this indicate that Richard Woods was his son, and that perhaps Samuel had died and Michael was resolving the account? -- OR -- Does it seem to indicate that Samuel was also a son of Michael? -- OR -- Were Samuel and Michael brothers? Further, what were the relationships, if any, of Margaret and Mary McDowell? I realize that Magadelina Woods married Captain John McDowell. Were Margaret and Mary their children? Thanks for any comments. Brett F. Woods
Hi, Looking for anyone with information on Samuel Woods who would have been living in present Pocahontas Co. WV in the 1770-80's. I am trying to find his descendants in an effort to identify his children. I have a suspected child William Woods (b. ca1785)who married Rebecca Edmiston and migrated to Gallia around 1807. I believe Samuel would have lived in the Little Levels area between there and Droop Mtn. since that's where his wifes kin was located. Any help or guidance is appreciated. Thx, Kent Gossman.
I am currently transcribing the marriage and death notices from an old Vermont newspaper - The Vermont Chronicle - published between 1826 and 1898. I have posted indexes to the notices online, (currently only 1826, 1827, 1828, 1830, 1831 & 1832, more to come as I get them done!) with instructions as to how to get the rest of the information contained within the notice. Check it out - who knows, it could be YOUR ancestor! <A HREF="http://www.middlebury.edu/~swilson/introvc.html">Vermont Chronicle Introductory Page</A> Good luck! Sylvia

There is a Bible for sale on eBay (not by me or anyone I know), auction # 176239243, until October 12 (Tuesday). The seller is in upstate New York, so perhaps that is where these WOODSes are located. Here is the eBay description: This is an old leather cover Bible, Old and New Testaments, translated out of the original tongues with references and marginal readings , with numerous additions from Bagster's Comprehensive Bible, printed in New York by Robinson, Pratt & Co., in 1839. In the geneology [sic] it has 2 marriages, 10 births, 15 deaths. Of the last names mentioned are "Day", "Fritz", "Woods", "Ward", plus some others. The records date from 1752 to 1898. Plus there are 6 loose pages in the Bible of family records that different people recorded. I hope this can get to a related family. URL is <http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=176239243>
Woods family information is incorporated into the lineage of John and Mary (Espy) Woods and Col. David and Jane (Woods) Espy and was found in a book ("The Espy-Espey Genealogy Book with Branch Lines and Allied Families," Vol. 2, George Chapter II and by Rita Espy Kuhbander and William G. Espy (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1987) and from Ruby Wigley Pullman, CHARLOTTE M. BRETT, Lois M. Postel, Gloria Sutcliffe; and Joseph L. Delafield, "Genealogies of Penn. Families" published by the Genealogical Publishing Co. note that there are discrepancies! The Espy book does not show the descendants of George Woods, b. in 1740, but it does for 11a. John Woods, b. 1742, 11b. William Woods, b. 1747; and 11c. Anna Woods, b. 1753 all shown to be children of John and Mary (Espy) Woods. It states that John Woods was b. c. 1720 in Ireland, d. 1769; m. Mary Espy, b. 1722. It further states that John Woods was the son of Andrew Woods b.c. 1690 in Blair Park, Ulster, Ireland and d. Aug. 1756 in Lancaster, Penn. He and his wife Sarah, who was b. in Ireland may have had 9 children, three of whom were John, and perhaps, Jane, and perhaps George. Jane Woods who m. Col. David Espy and lived in Bedford, Penn. was probably the daughter of Col. George & Jane (McDowell) Woods also of Bedford, Penn.. John Woods m. Marey Espy (sister of David Espy who lived next door to George Woods in the town of Bedford, Penn.; Margaret w/o PATTON; Jennett w/o John CALHOUN; Agnes w/o Neal McALLISTER; Sarah w/o Andrew COCHRAN; Martha w/o James McCLENAGHAN. The children of John and Marey (Espy) Woods were: i. George, b. 1740; ii. Andrew; b. 1742; iii. John, b. 1745; iv. William, b. 1747; Samuel, b. 1749; Daughters: Martha, b. 1749; Sarah, b. 1751 m. William Clark; Anna, b. 1753; Margaret, b. 1755; Janet, b. 1758; Marey/Mary, b. 1758 d. 1759; and Elizabeth, b. 1760 d. 1760?. {See Will below contributed by Lois M. Genealogies. and "Ferguson of Hanover" in Penn. Genealogies.} This John Woods married Marey ESPY, the daughter of George Espy! This John was possibly the brother of George Woods (1st), and could be the John Woods that Howard Nelson Hickock wrote in 1938 was the father of Rebecca Woods who m. George Nixon. I am researching Hugh Woods of Cass co IN and Cumberland co PA. He was born around 1760 in Pennsylvania and he served in the Revolutionary War- a monument to his service was recently erected in Cass co IN. He served in the 4th Pennsylvania Continental Line. Hugh's wife was Barbara and she may be Barbara Snyder who married Hugh Woods in Berkeley co VA in 1798. Their first two children Sarah and Mary were born in PA and both women married sons of John FITZER. A son John WOODS was born somewhere in Kentucky and the rest of their children were born in Lawrence co OH (James, Andrew Jackson, Joseph). Hugh died in Cass co IN 2 Feb 1854. He appears to be the son of John WOODS of West Pennsboro in Cumberland co PA. I would like to exchange info with anyone researching this family. Thanks Pam Shelton-Anderson pshelton1@compuserve.com
Woody - A couple of links that might help. First, to find out about the Masons, this may be useful: http://www.mit.edu/people/dryfoo/Masons/Main-page.html Second, for a couple more days, Ancestry.com is allowing free searches on this database which has some MA vital records from way back. It's a long shot, but could pan out for you. Scroll down to the MA link (about half way down the page. http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/recent.asp Cheers.
Good Evening, I have been trying to find out information on my g-g-g-grandfather for two years. The only problem is, I don't know where to go from here. His name was Nathaniel Wood, born on September 12, 1789. He was married (to Eunice Draper) in Whitehall, New York, in February 1818, and died on October 11, 1852. That's all I have on him. I'm trying to find out who his parents were. The problem is, I don't know where he was born. In the 1850 census he wrote MA, but didn't put a specific town. From what I've been told, any birth before 1841, I have to go to the town clerk where the birth took place. Does anyone have any ideas on where I can go to get more info? HELP! Thanks, Woody
Hello, I back at it again. I've come across some more info on a relative who was a Mason, but I don't know what it means. I found out that my great uncle was a 32nd degree Mason. What does that mean? Thanks for your help. Woody
