    1. [WOODS-L] Rev. Frame Woods NC/SC 1754-1816
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. I'm trying to verify the following data, and obtain additional information, on the family of Frame Woods. The below material has been compiled from a number of sources. I am particularly interested in any information on Frame's son William Woods and am trying to determine if he married an Elizabeth (surname Henry?) who was born in SC ABT 1791, or, if not, who William did marry and where they lived. FRAME WOODS (son of Joseph Woods and Elizabeth Logan) was born January 28, 1754 in Craven County, South Carolina, and died November 28, 1816 in York County, South Carolina. He married EDITH ROGERS 1780 in South Carolina. She was born in 1758, and died July 02, 1824 in York County, South Carolina. Frame Woods was a Baptist minister and (between 1800 and 1809) is of record being the pastor of the Welsh Neck Baptist Church in the town of Society Hill, Darlington County, South Carolina. Toward the end of his life (years 1810-1815) presided over the Deep Creek Baptist Church in Anson County, North Carolina. He is enumerated on the 1790, 1800 and 1810 Censuses from Anson County NC and appears to have frequently traveled between North and South Carolina. Also, enumerated in 1800, and living near Frame, is a Moses Woods. While doubtless a relative, Moses' relationship to Frame has yet to be determined. In the reference text "Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution," (Moss, B.G.; Limestone College; Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1983) Frame is enumerated as having served as a Captain in the South Carolina Militia during 1780-1781. Children: i. WILLIAM WOODS, b. 1792, Anson County, NC;. ii. JOSEPH WOODS, b. July 1781; d. January 13, 1845; m. HEPHZIBAH DARGAN. iii. ISHAM FRAME WOODS, b. March 12, 1772; m. HARRIET BYRON EVANS. iv. ANDREW B. WOODS, b. 1789, Darlington County, SC; d. January 26,1825, Sumter County, SC v. MARY PAMELIA WOODS, b. 1791, Anson County, NC; d. 1849, West Feliciana Parish, LA; m. WILLIAM LATTA vi. MARGERY WOODS, b. 1784, SC; m. WILLIAM HENRY, JR., Anson County, NC; b. 1765, Anson County, NC vii. ANNE WOODS, b. 1787. Thanks for any comments. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    1. [WOODS-L] Robert Woods of Abbeville County South Carolina.
    2. I have posted quite a few times on this but I figure what the heck! Try again. I have been searching for information on Robert Woods b 1783. To be more specific ,I was wondering if this Robert Woods was the son of William Woods b 1744 -1804 and Sussanah Catherine McKinley who probated her will in 1829. Robert along with his brothers and sisters were listed as heirs. His brothers were;James,William, Andrew, and John. His sisters were,Martha Bell Drinkwater,Sussanah C.M Smith and Isabella G Harden. According to the 1850 Coosa County Alabama Census, Robert and Elizabeth Woods had the follwing children;Jane age 40 b Georgia,Elizabeth age 35 b Georgia, Mary age 23 b Georgia and John Wesley age 21 b Georgia. I dont have any idea if this was all his children or not but they were all born in Georgia. The 1860 Coosa County Census gives Robert's and Elizabeth's ages as 70. Probably a lazy census taker that didnt get it right. Anyways my question to the forum is this! Is this Robert Woods the same son of William and Sussanah C Mckinley Woods? Would anyone out there recognize this family anyway? I wont give up but Ive been trying to make a connection for over 3 years. Some out there has to recognize this family as relatives or descendants! It has been suggested that Robert married Elizabeth somewhere in Georgia before the Indian Lands opened up. At least his oldest daughter would have been born around 1810. There were several Woods lines during this time but I have not been able to prove or disprove of Robert's relationship to the Abbeville Woods. I have the 1829 probated estate but it doesnt give me any needed clues. Please Help or advise! Russell

    1. [WOODS-L] Civil War Tennessee - Shadrack WOODS
    2. Jessie Blalock
    3. Hello. I am researching the Civil War regiment 4th Tennessee Cavalry (Union), and will eventually be concentrating on Co K of that regiment, about which I intend to write a book. In Co K of that regiment there was a soldier named Shadrack WOODS, b abt 1845 in Tennessee. He enlisted Feb 14, 1864, and survived the war, mustering out with the regiment in July 1865. However, I do not find his name in the 1890 Tennessee Veteran's Census, and neither he nor his family applied for any sort of Federal pension based on his military service. If you have any information about this soldier, or his family, which you would be willing to share with me, I would be grateful. Thank you Jessie Blalock http://users.rootsweb.com/~tn4cav/index.html

    2. J. L. WOOD
    3. Hello Helen, Don't know if there could be a connection with my WOOD(S) but I would be interested in info. on your WOOD/WOODS line. I'm searching for the parents and/or siblings of my g-grandfather, Rev./Dr. Jesse Lee (Leonidas?) WOOD. Jesse was b. 1839 in Carroll (now Montgomery) Co., MS; however, he doesn't show up until age 21 on the 1860 Census in rural Dyer Co., TN. His 1st wife is known only as "M" WOOD on the 1860 Census in TN when she was age 20 years. A child, Anna, was born that same year. The 1st wife "M" reportedly died in TN during the War and nothing more is known of her. I did receive info. re: a marriage record for a J. WOOD and a Margaret CADELL m. 9 Mar 1860 in Carroll, Co. MS which could possibly be Jesse's 1st marriage if they immediately left to go to TN before the Census was taken later that same year. I believe Jesse's family may have been farming in MS at the time he was born. He spent most of his adult life, however, in TN. Without the names of his parents or siblings, I don't have much to go on. The only thing I know about Jesse's family is that although he enlisted in the 7th Tennessee Cavalry Reg., U.S. Army, he stated that he had three brothers (names unknown) that fought for the CSA in the War. His parents were reportedly also born in MS and his father's name may possibly have been Jesse also and his mother's name possibly Mary BRAZEAL(sp?). In addition to BRAZEAL/BREAZEALE(sp?), the Surnames ESSARY and/or AYLMORE/ELMORE(sp?) may also possibly be in our ancestry. Jesse may also have been part Indian (possibly Choctaw or Chickasaw) according to family hearsay and by appearance but probably no more than 1/4. Hope we can find a connection. Thanks! 1. [WOODS-L] Woods Family - Christian County KY [c1800]
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. Looking for information on the following Woods family members who lived in early Christian County KY. They are of record of receiving the following land grants. Note that a number of these individuals received subsequent grants. The date indicated corresponds with their first grant. Robert Woods (11-10-1798) Bartholomew Woods (12-27-1798) John Woods (4-6-1799) Henry M. Woods (4-8-1799) Sally Woods (7-26-1803) Thomas Woods (2-28-1807) Kentucky received statehood in 1792 and the 1800 Christian Census enumerates only Bartholomew (from an early tax list) with no additional information. The 1810 Census enumerates: Henry Woods (born before 1765) David Woods (born between 1765-1784) Isham F. Woods (born between 1765-1784) Thomas Woods (born before 1765) Jessy Woods (born between 1784-1794) It should be noted that it is conceivable that Bartholomew (and perhaps his father?) earlier received the following North Carolina Land Grants in TN: #204 Bartholomew Woods, 1782 Washington Co, 558 acres "on the waters of Big Limestone Creek." #435 Bartholomew Woods, Jr., 1783 Washington Co, 200 acres "on the waters of the Little Nolechuky River." I would appreciate any information or comments indicating from where, or from whom, this family might have descended. Thanks for any assistance. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    1. [WOODS-L] Tally Ended: list moderator message
    2. Chris Lamesfield
    3. Thanx for sending me your thoughts. Here is the tally, and I think this is enough to make the decision. About 5 to 1 for keeping the list CLOSED/PRIVATE, and there are a couple volunteers to help. All the WOODS list members comments as of 10:00 PM (EDT): … Keep it closed. I want you to know that I do enjoy this list as I have left others over wars and bickering back and forth. I wish I would have known your reasons for all the questions in the beginning, my emails would have been nicer. Moderator note: Sorry for not telling you all the reasons. This was a way to protect the CURRENT members even at the cost of offending some potential members. Perhaps you might take the time to modify the request for information to make it less offensive (I'll send you a copy privately). … Keep it closed (by proxy). Whatever works best for you is fine with me. … Keep it closed. You might be able to use an "outreach" software pkg to work your list from afar, if indeed you'll physically be somewhere else during the week. Moderator note: I have access from nearly everywhere. However with a new job I will have lots of new stuff to learn and I'm not sure that I'll have the time during the week. And for a while, every day will bring new challenges. I'll be tired at the end of the day until I get used to the new job. … Keep it closed. If someone is seriously interested in joining the list, they will wait until the week-end for you to add them. … Keep it closed. Either appoint a temporary list moderator or let new subscribers wait. One of the joys of the WOODS list is that I dont have to be wary of spammers or 'enjoy' inflammatory dialogue. I truly wish other lists were so organized. Asking for needed identification and receiving it is a test of honesty and faith on both the moderator and the person seeking membership. … Keep it closed. If I was truly interested in wood/woods, I would not be put of by waiting a week to be added to the list. … Keep it closed. I would not mind waiting a week to be able to subscribe. … Keep it closed. keep it private, i don not think people truly interested in joining will mind that weeks wait. … Keep it closed. My opinion is to catch up on the weekends. Those who want the Woods list will persevere until subscribed. You're quite correct on all your thoughts about compromises and the quality-decreasing tradeoffs therein. Many of the lists are 50% jibberish and some of the city-lists get downright inane. … Keep it closed. I do not want this list opened up--I was around when the list was wide open and was there when the spammer shut everything down in 1996 (I think). It casued everyone grief and pain until the lists went private. Perhaps, a committee could help you with reviewing applications and therefore lowering the load on your shoulders. … Keep it closed. Leave things as they are and wait until the weekend for to do the administrative stuff that needs to be done. … Open the list. I think you should open the list to all. For the following reasons. If 20% of the weekly 20 applicants actually join the list, that's only 4 people being added to the list a week or 208 a year. The list has a potential growth of 1040 new members a year. Based on current membership of almost 600. Or the list has a current growth rate of .0066% per year versus a potential growth rate of 17.33% a year. … Keep it closed. If it's not too much work for you keep it as it is. It's refreshing compared to the flaming, and spaming on other lists. … Use members to Keep it closed. I agree that waiting a full week is too long unless there is some way to notify applicants of the possible delay. Perhaps a committee could be formed where the members take turns being the end all, be all for membership might work. … I belong to other lists that irritate me with the flaming from "outsiders". I vote to keep the list closed and have the potential members wait the week. … Keep it closed. I vote for a continued closed list as in the past. I belong to other lists, one of which has had a battle going on which requires me to sort through 10 -25 messages a day which contain no genealogical information at all, and others which have the battle intertwined with data. … Keep it closed. I have to say that thus far I have been extremly pleased with the way this list has been handled. I am on a number of other lists and have been recieving a lot of spam because they are not closed lists. This has overloaded my system a number of times (as many any 30-40 spams a day). My vote is to keep the list closed and either go with the weekend answers or get a number of other persons involved with helping you on this. … Keep it closed. I, for one, enjoy the clean efficient operation of the current list. … In January of last year, we discussed the idea of Mentors for list "Newbies", a group of list "Veterans" who understand the workings of list functions and could guide the new ones in that aspect, and the "do's and don'ts" of posting messages. I believe this "Mentor" idea will work if you decide to open the list up. I would suggest at least a "Trial Run" of a few weeks or months to see if volunteer listers can keep things running smoothly. … Open the list If I were you I would just open the list. If something distasteful occurs, you can always explore other options. … Keep it closed. I like the way this list is run and would not want to have it opened up to spammers and nuts. … Open the list You could try waiting for the weekend and see how that goes and if it requires too much of your week end time. If that becomes unbearable, then you could open the list and make it public. Moderator note: I have done this often, generally it doesn't make much difference except that my wife and kids let me know I'm spending too much time on the computers. If it becomes out of control with spammers, etc. then you might ask for a team of monitors. … Keep it closed. Is it possible to send an automatic reply to the new applicant that says "you will be contacted at the end of the week to finish the application process. Possible notification will be between -such and such hours. Try to answer if as soon as possible." The benefits of this list outnumber those of other list and the possible wait. I LOVE the closed or private list. I unfortunately am a member of a couple of the "flaming, off topic, spamming" list. I hate them. I only tolerate them because of the bits of info I get once a month. … Keep it closed. I say leave it as it is and take care of new subscribers when you are able to do so. … Use members to Keep it closed. Why not select someone who has been on the list for a while to share your duties and keep the list as it is? … Keep it closed. I would like to see the list stay CLOSED/PRIVATE. It's working very well since you made that change. … Open the list. I manage 17 lists at Rootsweb and have no problem with open lists. Spam is not a problem, with the capabilities of Rootsweb to filter stuff. Frankly, I was insulted at the questions asked of me in order to join this list. I would prefer the list to be open. … 600 members -- that's a lot of folks who have information to be shared. Yet what percentage of those would you guess post at least once per month? Sure wish there was a way to spark those who don't into posting. Moderator note: I agree, perhaps we can ask newbies to post what they know as part of the subscribe process. … Thanx for the support. For now we will keep it "closed, private" and see if we can figure out how to make use of volunteers to notify new subscribers that it may take up to a week to get on the list. Keeping the list closed and private would have been my choice as well, but I could see no way of doing that, you have provided that method. If you would be willing to exchange email with "POTENTIAL" new members and gather the qualifications from them, please contact me privately again at cjl@email.com. Thanx again, Chris

    1. [WOODS-L] list moderator message
    2. Chris Lamesfield
    3. Hi, I need your input. The WOODS list has almost 600 members, so think about the ramifications to all 600 current members when you consider the following. For the last 18 months the WOODS list has been a "CLOSED, PRIVATE" list. This means that all new subscribers have had to "qualify" by giving me a reason to join the list, as well they have had to provide me with "references" and/or their complete name and postal address to become members. The reason I changed the list to a "CLOSED, PRIVATE" list was to stop a couple troublemakers from having access to the list. It had the additional benefit that it virtually stopped spamers from being able to use the list. You might think that this change would make it more difficult to administer the list. That has not been the case. Although there is more up front work to add a member, those who have joined have added to the WOODS family knowledge by posting intelligent, thought out messages, unlike some lists that get 50 messages a day of which only a handful are meaningful to the most list members. We have not had any flame wars or even any antagonistic messages during that time, although there has been some good, heated, intelligent discussions to resolve issues. My new real job will require me to be away during the week and I don't know what opportunity I will have to monitor the list and to respond to those who want to join. Consequently some new members could be required to wait a week for a response to their "subscribe". My feeling is that a week is too long to make them wait for a reply. Although improbable, other problems could arise with the administration of the list which would take me a week to get it straightened out. We have some options: ... Open the list, so that when new members send their subscribe message it will automatically add them to the list. This has some inherent problems, spammers will have easy access to the list, and troublemakers will easily be able to get on the list and cause trouble…. ... Appoint a new list moderator a team to monitor the list and make additions/changes as necessary. ... Leave things as they are and wait until the weekend for me to do the administrative stuff that needs to be done. ... and others, give me your ideas. But read the rest of the message first. Just a little information about new members. As most of you know I own/moderate about a dozen lists on multiple servers on the net. This is the only one that is really a public list that works as a "CLOSED, PRIVATE" one. On the other public lists I moderate only about 1 in 3 new members actually want to be on the list, most just join to see what it is about and leave (or want to in a few days). Of those who leave quickly 1 in 10 of them will create some problem before leaving the list. Those problems could be anything from nasty remarks and flame messages, to just stupid "get me off this list" messages even though they got instructions in the "welcome" message and two messages out of ten on the list give unsubscribe instructions. For the WOODS list I get about 20 subscribe messages a week, and reply with instructions to supply the reason they want to join and to send me their complete postal addresses and/or references. I actually only get the information from about about 20 % of those who sent the original "subscribe" messages. In addition to those who just wanted to "test the water' and spammers, some folks just don't feel confortable giving me that information and just don't join, but some could add valuble information to the list if they were members. Frankly; I'm only interested in input from those who have been on the list for more then 6 months, and are competent list users. If you don't know how to send me your thoughts privately don't reply at all to this message. Again, the WOODS list has almost 600 members, so think about the ramifications to all 600 current members when you consider this. DONOT reply to the list for this message, send your thoughts to me privately at cjl@email.com no later today, Monday Jan 17. Thanx for your input, Chris

    3. Hello All. I am new on your list and of course, madly hoping that some connection to my Woods family is just waiting on your list for me to post. So here is a brief rundown of what I know. James WOODS was born (somewhere) in Ireland c1817 as was his wife Jane SULLIVAN bet. 1818-1820 They had four children, all born in Ireland as well: Patrick bet.1842-47 m. Elizabeth DEERAN & Margaret --- Catharine 1846 m. Thomas MARTIN Margaret 1847 m. John MILLIFF Bridget 1848 m. Michael CUMMINGS James emigrated around 1846; the family followed in 1849, along with Jane's sister, Catherine SULLIVAN They landed in NY and by 1856 had arrived in Cleveland OH. James was a tailor. I am trying to trace Patrick's family. Sometime after 1880, they moved to Chicago, where Pat died in 1890. He was returned to Cleveland where he was buried with his first wife & child. His second wife, Margaret, & 2 daughters, Mary & Jane, remained in Chicago un til at least 1894. They do not appear in the Chicago Directory after that. It is possible that Mary was the same Mary A. WOODS who married a James N. HEWITT in Chicago. I hope someone out there has a clue, because they go up in smoke at that point. Hoping for help in Ohio. Judith Campbell

    1. [WOODS-L] WOOD-HALLMARK
    2. David Walker
    3. Hello Everyone, I'm new to the list and am hopeful some of you may be able to help me. A search of twenty years length yielded results yesterday, when I found the marriage record of Satterwhite C. HALLMARK and Elizabeth WOOD on 22 August 1841, in a marriage records book published by the Coweta County Genealogical Society. I am obviously in the early stages of my WOOD research but a brief look at the 1840 Census for Coweta Co shows only two WOOD families in the county with females in the household of an age to have been my Elizabeth WOOD who was born 1822-24. One is Charles Wood, who is living next door to Marthey Wood and the other is James Wood who is living three houses away. My instinct tells me Elizabeth's father is probably James Wood since Satterwhite Hallmark named his first son James T. Hallmark. Satterwhite's father was John H. Hallmark and Satterwhite named his second son John F. Hallmark . If anyone can shed any light on the WOOD families in Coweta Co., GA I would be most grateful! .
