    1. [WOODS-L] James Woods (b Orange County NC 1792 - d Wake County NC after 1870)
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. I am looking for information, particularly a will or will abstract, for the James Woods who died in Wake County NC sometime after 1870 when he and his wife Mary (both age 78) were enumerated on page 159 of the 1870 Wake County Census? Or does anyone know if James was still alive in 1880, as I'm unable to locate an index for 1880? James Woods (b Orange County NC 1792) is the son of Joseph Woods (1750-1852) and Anna (McKee?) Woods (1771-1846); and the grandson of Hugh Woods (ABT 1732-1800) and Mary (Dunagan?) (d Orange County 1822). James married a Mary "Polly" Brown (b NC 1792) in Orange County NC on 15 May 1818. James' older brother, Hugh Woods, served as his bondsman. James and his family moved from Orange County NC to Wake County NC sometime between 1850-1860 and his family is also enumerated on page 179 of the 1860 Wake County NC Census. The children of James Woods and Mary Polly Brown are as follows: 1. A son born between 1820-1825 (out of household by 1850 Orange County NC enumeration) 2. A daughter born between 1820-1825 (out of household by 1850 Orange County NC enumeration) 3. James (b 1832). Enlisted in the Confederate Army in Wake County NC on 1 May 1861 (E Company, 14th Infantry Regiment, NC). Killed at the Battle of the Wilderness on 6 May 1864. 4. Lambert (b 1834). Enlisted in the Confederate Army in Wake County NC on 1 May 1861 (E Company, 14th Infantry Regiment, NC). Killed at the Battle of Seven Pines on 31 May 1862. 5. Narcissa (b 1830) married an S. J. Allen on 15 Apr 1857 in Wake County, North Carolina. I'm trying to narrow down the date of James' (and his wife's) death prior to ordering a search for probate records in Wake County. Thanks for any comments. /Brett/ Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    1. [WOODS-L] Phoebe Wood or Woods b. 1786 GA m. Asa Parker
    2. Jeanette Howell
    3. Phoebe WOOD or WOODS m. Asa PARKER about 1802 in probably Jefferson Co., GA. I am searching for her parents and siblings. Either John or William, a brother of General Solomon Wood, is a possibility of being her father. John Wood, a brother of Solomon, made a will which was probated 6 Dec 1802 in Jefferson Co., GA but a copy of the will cannot be found. Witness: Joseph Barber Another John Wood was listed on the 1830 Jefferson Co., GA Census on page 409. General Solomon Wood had sons with curious names like Green Wood, Mark Red Wood and John White Wood. Some moved to the area around Montgomery, AL and some to MS and TX. Does anyone out there know who were the parents of Phoebe Wood? Siblings? Asa and Phoebe Wood/s Parker moved to Monroe Co., AL by 1830 and to Lauderdale Co., MS by 1850. Glad to exchange genealogy. 1. [WOODS-L] Joseph Woods (Orange County NC) 1750-1852
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. Does anyone have the abstract of this Joseph Woods' will? I understand it is in (Orange County NC) Will Book G-26, dated 28 Sep 1850 and proved in the May Court 1852. This is what I have developed on Joseph and feel free to make any comments or corrections: Joseph Woods (son of Hugh Woods and Mary Dunnegan). Born Orange County NC 26 June 1750; died 12 September 1852. Buried in the Little River Cemetery, Orange County, NC. Married Anna Unknown, born 24 February 1771, died 24 October 1846, and also buried in the Little River Cemetery. [I would like any information on Anna -- like her last name and where and when they were married -- if available]. Children: Hugh m Eliza Jane Ray in Orange County 20 January 1826 (William Dunagan bondsman) James m Polly Brown in Orange County 15 May 1818 (Hugh Woods bondsman) John m Sally McKee in Orange County 19 Sep 1833 (Eli Woods bondsman) Eli m Margaret Brown in Orange County 8 May 1819 (William Brown bondsman) Mary m (1) William H. Hall; (2) UNK Rhea Elizabeth m John R. Hall William Other Information: Joseph is mentioned in the will of Hugh Woods (Orange County Will Book D-1) dated 18 Jan 1794, proved May 1800. Wife: Mary. Sons: Joseph, Elihu and John. Daughters: Susanna (wife of James Faucette and noted to be a grandmother); Sarah; Elizabeth; and Mary Ann. Granddaughter: Milly, daughter of George Riggs and wife Rebecca (Rebecca must have been of of Hugh's daughters who was already deceased); Grandson: Hugh, son of George Woods and wife Rebecca. Witnesses: David Turrentine, James Grimes, and Hugh Montgomery. It is my understanding that Hugh's son John married Mary Cain; and his son Elihugh married Elinor Faucett. Thanks again for any comments and note my new e-mail address. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    1. [WOODS-L] Jeremiah Wood
    2. William E. Strange
    3. I need to repost my migration chart and correct a gross error. My lineage does not extend to Jeremiah Wood and Mary "Polly" Dooley Wood. I had believed because of so many similarities that Jeremiah Wood of Jackson County, Missouri was the same Jeremiah who was the son to Jeremiah and Polly. This past week I found information to the contrary. Jeremiah Wood of Jackson Co.,Missouri married Elizabeth Stanley in 1813 in Halifax County, Va. One source claims he was the son of a Thomas Wood and that he received a bequest of land in Bedford County. You can see the reasons for confusion. The following is what I am left with: 1. Thomas Wood 2. Jeremiah Wood m. Elizabeth Stanley (or Standley) daughter of John Stanley. They went to Jackson County, Missouri in 1832. Tombstones have been found, and I have pictures, in Missouri. Elizabeth's tombstone even verifies that she came to Missouri in 1830. Their children were: John Stanley Wood, James Wood, Nathaniel Wood, Edward Wood (my great great grandfather), Richard D. Wood, William Wood, Joseph Wood, Jeremiah Benton Wood, Mary Wood, Elizabeth "Eliza" Wood, and Martha C. Wood. 3. Edward Wood m. Ann Adams 3. Mary Elizabeth Wood m. John Garland Walsh 4. Thomas Jefferson Walsh m. Annie Simmons 5. Vida Walsh m. James P. Norie 6. Dorothy Jeane Norie m. William E. Strange We have two daughters Lisa m. R. W. Kuhn, they have 1 son, Alex Leigh m. Theodore J. Archacki II and they have 2 sons: Teddy and Will I am sorry for any confusion I have caused the Wood Clan. I stumbled across a Power of Attorney which led me to a Will and then a Will settlement that proved that Jeremiah Wood of the Peaks of Otter family was married to Martha Feazle. I have also said that Jeremiah Wood, husband of Mary Polly Dooley had no will. I found that he did, but that it is not listed in the Will Index because it was not accepted for probate. Someone had written in the Index that a will existed and could be found elsewhere. If anyone has been told that a will does not exist they might look further and ask for assistance. This is another source availble to us that I certainly was not aware of and probably others aren't either. This will was contested therefore not accepted for probate. I am looking for information on the Jeremiah Wood who lived in Halifax, Pittsylvania and Patrick Counties and who married Elizabeth Stanley. Is he the son of a Thomas. If so is it the Thomas of Halifax who was a son of John Wood, Will of 1801 does not list a Jeremiah and it does list other grand and great grand children. Help! Dorothy

    1. [WOODS-L] Benjamin Moses Woods -- Tennessee
    2. JIM WHITE
    3. Benjamin Moses Woods came to Texas from Williamson County, Tennessee. Texas census records show that he was born in 1827 or 1828 in Tennessee. His mother was from North Carolina and his father was born in Tennessee. Benjamin married Milly Ann Coleman on Sept. 12, 1853 in Panola County, Texas (verified). He died in 1901 and is buried in Pipe Creek, Texas (I found his grave). He was my maternal great-great-grandfather. I need help with a link to Benjamin's father/mother's names. Benjamin should be on a Tennessee census of Williamson County, Tennessee in 1830 or 1840. Can anyone tell me when Tennessee started taking a census and how to locate that information. Any help is deeply appreciated. Thank you!! :-) Jim White :-) jimwhite@bigplanet.com Fort Worth, Texas

    1. [WOODS-L] UPDATE ON THE WOOD-WOODS FAMILY MAGAZINE
    2. J. L. WOOD
    3. Fellow WOOD/WOODS researchers, For anyone interested, the information below which concerns the WOOD-WOODS FAMILY MAGAZINE was found at the following web site: <http://web.dbtech.net/~hwood/wpc.html> Someone said earlier, the Publisher, Harold WOOD reportedly died of cancer last year. It appears that the info. on the website has not been updated since late 1998. I attempted to contact the phone numbers listed as well as through Directory Assistance for a new listing without success. WOOD PUBLISHING CO., L.L.C. Thomas Harold Wood, Publisher 2514 Bryant Drive, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35401 (205) 752-5812, 752-5220, Fax 752-5220, E-mail hwood@dbtech.net The Wood-Woods Family Magazine, Volume XXI, will be published as a quarterly issue beginning January, 1999. The issues contain approximately 50 pages each plus name indexes. Annual subscription is $30. Queries are published for subscribers free as are ahnentafel lists of direct ancestors and other pertinent WOOD and WOODS data. The magazine is not dedicated to any specific family or area, but is predominantly concerned with early American WOOD/WOODS individuals, their origins, ancestors and families. The pre-cursor to the WWFM was Katie-Prince Ward Esker's Wood-Woods Exchange, begun in 1947 as a quarterly publication when Mrs. Esker was with the USDAR in Washington, DC. She continued its publication for eight volumes through 1958 when she returned to her hometown of Starkville, Mississippi. The content of these eight volumes contained some of the earliest and most difficult to find records of the WOOD and WOODS families in early America. Mrs. Esker graciously gave exclusive permission to the publisher of The Wood-Woods Family Magazine to reprint her publications before her death. The eight volumes of the Wood-Woods Exchange have been reprinted and are available as are all 20 volumes of The Wood-Woods Family Magazine. The combined 28 volumes contain approximately 5,000 pages plus indexes. Computer digitizing is in process at the present time. The completed project will include a database of all names and may be searched for the publication, volume and page numbers references of all names. A little over 30% of the names are either WOOD or WOODS while the balance are names other than WOOD or WOODS. The entire names database of over a million one hundred thousand references will be published as will the 5,000 pages of the two publications to CD-Rom discs and offered for sale to the public in the near future. Watch this page for availability. Of course, our other primary project involves digitizing the early handwritten records from the Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama courthouse. Some are available at present.
