    1. [WOODS-L] Robert Woods [1719 Ireland - 1811 VA]
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. I thought someone might find this to be of interest. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico ******************** Robert Woods, born ABT 1719 in Ireland (probably Ulster); died 1811 in Franklin Co., Virginia. Married Elizabeth Middleton. Notes for Robert Woods: Robert Woods first appears in Lunenburg County, Virginia Deed Book 1 pages 6-8 on June 2, 1746 when he purchased, for 79 pounds, 213 acres on Woods Fork from John Martin and his wife Ann of Amelia County. The witnesses were John David and "John Midelton". This was only shortly after Lunenburg County was divided off from Brunswick County and became an official entity on May 1, 1746. He next appears on October 15, 1748 when he, David Caldwell and David Logan appraised the estate of Andrew Kennedy (Will Book 1, page 14). He then appears in the 1749 Lunenburg County tithe list of William Caldwell living in the area between Cubb Creek and Falling River along what is now theCampbell/Charlotte County line. His future father-in-law, John Middleton, and brother-in-law, Ainsworth Middleton, also appear on this list. The 1750 tithe list for William Caldwell also includes Robert Wood(s) as well as John Wood(s), Richard Wood(s) and Ainsworth Middleton. John and Richard may have been relatives. The 1752 tithe list for William Caldwell includes Robert Woods. The next names on the list were "John Midelton" and his son "Ensworth Midelton". About 1752, Robert Woods married Elizabeth Middleton, the daughter of John Middleton Sr. and Margaret (Ainsworth) Middleton. Robert Woods is listed in the Lunenburg County, Virginia marriage records as the "surety" in the August, 1752 marriage of his brother-in-law, John Middleton (Jr.) to Martha Wachup, spinster. In 1757 Robert Woods was a witness to the Lunenburg County will of James Caldwell. On January 23, 1760 he was the "surety" in the Lunenberg County marriage of George Caldwell and Isbell Davis. In the October 23, 1764 will of John Middleton Jr. which was recorded in Charlotte County, Virginia Will Book 1 Page 4, on August 4, 1766, and names wife, Martha, and sons, John, James, Samuel and Robert; Robert Woods and Thomas Moore were named executors and Ainsworth Middleton and Jean Middleton were witnesses. Robert Woods next appears on February 23, 1770 when he took the oath as a captain in the Pittsylvania County, Virginia militia. On September 27, 1775, the Pittsylvania County Committee of Safety nominated him as captain of the militia "agreeable to the ordinance of the convention." He is listed among the persons who took the oath of allegiance before Edmund Lyne on August 30, 1777. In August 1779, he was recommended to Governor Thomas Jefferson as "a proper person to serve in the Commission of the Peace" for Henry County, Virginia. He and William Tunstall were allowed fifteen shillings each "for assessing the Commrs Lands in the North Battalion." In March 1782, Robert Woods was "allowed pay for 15 days pasturage for 66 beeves, and 36 forages and 45 diets for horses." When Captain Heard marched to join General Sumner in North Carolina, Robert supplied 35 diets and forage for 34 horses. In addition to compensation for these items, he was allowed pay for 160 pounds of fresh pork, 43 pounds of bacon and 3 bushels of oats furnished to the hospital at the Henry County Courthouse, in March 1781. Robert Woods became the first sheriff of Franklin County VA in 1786 and served until August 1787. An execution was issued against him for failure to collect taxes for the year 1786. On October 15, 1788, he petitioned for relief from the execution stating that "The burden of the said tax on the poor inhabitants of the county and the amazing scarcity of money were responsible for the default." In the closing years of the 18th century, most eyes were turned westward. Robert was no exception. The Act of December 9, 1791, to establish several new ferries across the New and Ohio Rivers refers to "the land of Robert Woods on Fishing Creek in the County of Ohio," which is now in West Virginia. [NOTE: Needs to be confirmed to determine if this the same Robert Woods] Following the Revolutionary War, Robert Woods continued to provide food for the Militia. On June 4, 1792, he signed a paper acknowledging himself bound to Governor Henry Lee in the sum of 1000 pounds in connection with "contracts to furnish such of the volunteer Militia now in the County of Ohio or who may be hereafter stationed in the County ... each ration to consist of one pound of beef or three quarters of a pound of pork, one pound of bread or flour, half a gill of rum, brandy, or whiskey, and one quart of salt to every hundred rations: the price of a ration to be eight cents." Robert Woods died in 1811 at the age of 91. Children of Robert Woods and Elizabeth Middleton are: Robert T. Woods, Jr., born about 1755. George Woods, died in Patrick Co., Virginia; married Fanny Mason February 17, 1778 in Henry Co., Virginia. Hugh Woods, died Bef. 1805 in Franklin Co., Virginia; married Sarah Ann George August 5, 1779 in Henry Co., Virginia. Isabella Woods, born about 1760 in Charlotte Co., Virginia; died November 28, 1805 in Franklin Co., Virginia; married John Dickenson, Sr. June 2, 1781 in Henry Co., Virginia. John Woods, born 1760; died about 1808; married (1) Lucy Hawkins April 10, 1782 in Henry Co., Virginia; married (2) Agnes Anne Hairston October 12, 1792 in Franklin Co., Virginia. Josiah Woods, born 1762; married Sarah Cotton Hill. Elizabeth Woods, married Francis Hill February 24, 1796 in Franklin Co., Virginia. Middleton Woods, born about 1765 in Franklin Co., Virginia; died March 1807 in Wilkes Co. Georgia; married Martha Harper. Margaret "Peggy" Woods, died in Georgia; married Hugh Martin about 1780.

    1. [WOODS-L] WOODS - Virginia-Ohio 1850
    2. It's been a while since I've posted so thought I would try again. I am still looking for information on Moses Woods born 1813, Lancaster, PA. In 1851 he married Catherine (Kathryn) Wolfe of Preston County. They had Thomas Woods, born 1853, John Woods 1855, Carrie Woods 1857, Louisa Ann Woods, 1862 and then moved to Washington County Ohio where their other children were born. Kathryn born in 1866 and Harriett born in 1871. I have information on a couple of these children if anyone is interested. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mud

    1. [WOODS-L] Jeremiah Wood of Halifax vs Jeremiah Wood of Bedford
    2. William E. Strange
    3. I hope you will find it possible to post the message I just sent regarding the above. It should help clarify a lot of wrong information floating around out there, some of which I certainly contributed to. I had based my research on a "bought and paid for" genealogy belonging to my great-aunt that connected another Jeremiah Wood of Halifax County, VA then later of Jackson County, Mo. to the Wood family of Bedford. There were so many extraordinary similarities involving dates and names and even a land transaction in Bedford County. In the process I learned that a death record often reveals a lot of genealogical information like name of spouse, place of birth and names of parents. Also, I learned that just because someone says "there is no will" that perhaps you should look further. A will not accepted for probate will not be listed in the Will Index. The Estate of that person will be referred to in the Administration docment as "intestate." To make it absolutely clear: Jeremiah Wood who married Elizabeth Stanley in 1813 in Halifax Co.Va and moved to Jackson Co.,Mo. is not the Jeremiah Wood of Bedford who married Martha Feazle and moved to Buchanan Co.,Mo. 1. [WOODS-L] Polly Dooley-Wood (1780-1854
    2. William E. Strange
    3. Polly Dooley-Wood (1780-1754) owned "Polly's Ordinary" on Peaks of Otter Bedford County, Virginia Contrary to popular belief, Polly did not live out her final years and die in Bedford Co., VA. She moved to Buchanan Co., Mo. with, at least, three of her sons in about 1843. She appeared there on the 1850 Census, and she died in the fall of 1854. Much of the confusion has apparently been caused by the existance in Bedford Co. of a second woman named "Polly Wood" (1782-20 Dec 1854). She was the daughter of Paul Wood, and she married Thomas Wood (son of Charles Wood) in 1804. That "Polly Wood" is recorded in the Bedford Co. Death records on 20 Dec 1854 as dying from Dropsey at age 72. Her name, residence, and life-span was so close to that of Polly Dooley-Wood that it is easy to see how the two women have been confused. Mary Polly Dooley-Wood's life in Bedford County is fairly well known. Her "Polly's Ordinary" cabin has been moved out of the lake bed, and preserved for visitors to the Peaks of Otter. Polly was a daughter of John and Elizabeth Birks-Dooley, and grand-daughter of Henry and Martha Anderson-Dooley. Polly married Jeremiah Wood (son of Thomas Wood, Jr.) on 28 Dec 1796. They had ten children: Rhoda (died young), Wesley, Nancy, John, Jeremiah Jr., Mary, Thomas, Henry, DeMartha, and Bird. Jeremiah Wood Sr., died 30 September 1829, and was buried near his daughter, Rhoda, on Harkening Hill. Published reports of what happened after Jeremiah's death are mostly correct, except for a couple of minor details. Polly was about 49 years old at that time, instead of the reported 47 years. Jeremiah had left a Will, but it was found to be unacceptable and refused for probate, therefore, "intestate" proceedings were carried out. Bedford County marriages show that 3 of Polly Dooley-Wood's sons married 3 daughters of Philip Feazle (Feazel). Thomas Wood & Mahala Feazle 7 Dec 1829 Jeremiah Wood & Martha Feazle 7 Dec 1829 Bird Wood & Mary Feazle 6 June 1832 These 3 Wood-brothers and 3 Feazle-sisters started the families that moved to Buchanan Co.,Mo. in the early 1840's. They bought land and made homes, and Polly Dooley-Wood joined them in about 1843. Jeremiah Wood, Jr. had become Executor of Philip Feazle's Estate, and he assigned a Power-of-Attorney (Wood to Owen, Deed Book 30-pg.386) for that responsibility, at the Bedford County Clerk's office on 5 Sep 1843. Polly Dooley-Wood assigned her "dower" lifetime interest in the Peaks property to Benjamin Wilkes, and personally appeared at the Bedford County Clerk's office 5 Sep 1843 (Deed Book 30-pg.386-87). This seems to indicate that Jeremiah Jr. returned to Bedford County to clear up legal matters, and then escort his mother to their new home in Missouri. 1850 Census records for the Wood families in Buchanan County, Missouri (page 92) (Jeremiah and Thomas both died in 1850) Bird 35 M VA place of birth Mary 34 F VA Teresa 18 F VA Ann 16 F VA Samuel 14 M VA Thomas 12 M VA William 10 M VA Jane 8 F MO Mary 6 F MO John 4 M MO Alexander 2 M MO Lucinda 1 F MO Martha 35 F VA (widow of Jeremiah) Mary 20 F VA Jane 18 F VA Jenetta 16 F VA Martha 14 F VA Malinda 12 F VA (Belinda) Hala 10 F MO (Mahala) Sarah 8 F MO Thomas 39 M VA Mahala 44 F VA Samanthe 19 F VA Minerva 17 F VA Sarah 14 F VA Milton 12 M VA Mary 8 F MO Thomas 7 M MO Mary 70 F VA (Mary "Polly" Dooley-Wood, mother of 3 Wood sons who moved to Buchanan County, Mo.) PROBATE RECORDS found in Buchanan Co.,Mo. (in Northwest Missouri Genealogy Society Library) Mary (Polly) Dooley-Wood's administrator was her son, Bird Wood. He filed her inventory on 20 Dec 1854. This would seem to prove that Polly Dooley-Wood died in Buchanan Co., Mo. in about Oct-Nov of 1854. Three of Mary Dooley-Wood's sons (Jeremiah Jr., Thomas, and Bird) also died in Buchanan Co., Mo. Their widows (3 sisters, formerly Martha, Mahala and Mary Feazle) administered theeir husbands estates. George Sampson Karns (born in Bedford Co., and a son of Michael Karns, Jr.) inventoried all 3 estates. Probate records were filed. Jeremiah Wood = 8 August 1850 Thomas Wood = 21 August 1850 Bird Wood = 27 April 1872 John (another son of Polly) and his wife Nancy Carter-Wood moved to Doniphan Co., Kansas (just west of Buchanan Co.,MO). They were buried 3 miles west of Troy, Kansas, in the Wood Cemetery. These finds resulted from a collaborative research effort by Dorothy and Bill Strange, working in Virginia and Landis Weaver, working in Missouri.

    3. I am still trying to identify the parents of the James Woods who married Martha Berry in Caswell County NC in December 1822. Due to the Caswell County location, it would appear that this James is descendant from Samuel Woods and Mary Mitchell (and is not the same James who married Martha Hughes on in 1819). Is this James who married Martha Berry the son of: 1. William Woods and Mary Farley (m. 1800) -or- 2. John Woods and Catherine Farley (m. 1801) -or- 3. Is it possible that Martha Hughes died and James remarried this Martha Berry? Thanks for any leads. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

His Father Frederick was born on Aug. 7,1834 in Ohio. He married Elisa Jones of Knox Co. Ohio on July 4,1861 and died April 14,1905 in Belvidere Ill. I have birth records from Knox Co. of what may be siblings of Owen born to Frederick and Elisa in 1867 and 1869 but they must have moved before Owen was born. I sure would like to know who Frederick's Father was and where he was from. I might find a connection with some of these N.C. Woodses on the site. Here's hoping, Joanne (Woods/Webb) ------=_NextPart_000_0004_01BFC184.440B5360--
