    1. [WOODS-L] Introduction
    2. Hello, My name is James Woods. I am retired and living 'Where the Pines meet the Ocean' in New Jersey. A couple of years before retiring I began to do some research on my families of origin. Since retiring I have had more time for this. I am now at the clinical stage best described as obsessed/fanatical <G> Let me give you a brief synopsis of my Woods family. My great grandfather, Bernard, was born in Keady, Armagh @ 1846. He emigrated at some point (?) to England and married my great grandmother, Dorothy Taylor, who was from South Sheilos (on the south side of the mouth of the river Tyne) I think, but do not know, that Bernard may have worked in the mines in Newcastle. While in Newcastle Bernard and Dorothy's oldest two children, Terrence and Sarah were born. By 1875 Bernard and Dorothy were in Lonaconing, MD, a coalmining town in Allegany County, Maryland. That is where my grandfather was born. I do not yet know which ship/port/or exactly when Bernard came to the States. I have not yet determined who his father and mother were, though since he named his oldest son Terrence, that may have been HIS father's name. One thing I do know is that Bernard's sons went into the mines. I also know from family oral history that Bernard ran a general store for a time in Lonaconing and went bust by giving out credit. I suspect he may have given credit to miners on strike or who went on strike after he had extended credit...I am guessing, but hope to get to Lonaconing to do some research. It is possible he was not a very good businesman <G> Some Woods folks still live in Lonaconing and many have dispersed--in my grandfather's case, to Pittsburgh and then to a small farm in Cambridge Springs, PA. I have another Irish anscestor--James Mooney--whose family had emigrated to Pictou in Nova Scotia. That was James' father Andrew and his wife. James emigrated to Lonaconing and married the daughter of a family who had come there from Newcastle--Elizabeth Ternent. James and Elizbeth's daughter, Anne, married my grandfather Patrick at St. Mary's church in Lonaconing, MD in 1903. I would be very interested in hearing from any Woods' who, like me, have ancestral roots in Armagh or elsewhere in Ireland. Any help or assistance that I can give to anyone, please feel free to ask. Thank you, Jim Woods

    1. Re: [WOODS-L] "Woods-Wallace Cousin Clues"
    2. There is an internet book locator site at bibliofind.com that I have had some success with. They have inventory lists of many used/antique bookstores. Its easy to search, just put in the title or author if known. If they have a listings, it will show who has the book, the condition of it, the cost, who to contact, etc. I'm not affiliated with this site, just have had luck with it.

    1. Re: [WOODS-L] Woods-Wallace cousins
    2. Ernie & Connie
    3. Hello All, I doubt you will find a copy of the book in a bookstore or publishers list. The correct title of the book is "WOODS - WALLACE COUSINS CLUES", written and self-published by Ruth Lamar Petracek in 1973. I have seen copies in several genealogy libraries, mainly in the Virginia area, but I imagine in the last 27 years copies of it have spread across the United States. I have never known it to be sold by a book publisher. I copied about 30 pages of the book while in Charlottsville VA, and have mailed copies to other people. The pages I have is about one fourth of the book, the part on the family of Michael Woods of Blair Park. The book is good material for the thorough researcher, but be warned that the book contains some speculation on the part of the author, and also some of her information has been dis-proven since the book was written. Several years ago I was researching the family of Michael Woods of Blair Park looking for a connection to Joseph Woods b. 1745 in Albemarle Co, VA. Ruth speculates about the children of Michael, and some of her information on that subject may be in error. You find many trees on the internet that connect to the Michael Woods line. If that is the line you are researching, please do not take everything you find or read for granted. Please seek out sources and documentation to prove that the information is correct. A few years ago I was corresponding with a well known and very thorough Woods-Wallace researcher in California, and I asked her opinion of the Petracek book information. This was her reply: "Ruth has acquired a lot of good information from various sources but a frequently heard complaint about her books (she has self-published several) is she doesn't edit herself well and make sure what she has received is then put into her books accurately, and the books are incredibly jumbled. She also speculates far beyond what is reasonable and ignores some primary sources, and other people's research. She has a tendency to believe in only her own discoveries, sometimes. She also initially did not always record where she found items and remembers incorrectly, yet publishes what she thinks she remembers. However, despite all this, her books are good sources of information. Most of what is in there is correct, and has been verified by several persons' crosschecking. The varied and confused order of the books, however, with either equally confusing or inadequate indices, are not for the impatient or the timid." Those of you who have been on this list for a while will remember the debates, almost heated at times, on the lineage of the Michael Woods-Mary Campbell family. At one time the list moderator was forced to require that you show documentation with any information posted to the list on this family. If you are new at researching this line, PLEASE DOCUMENT YOUR INFORMATION CAREFULLY! There is still a lot of dis-proven and controversial information out there being represented as accurate. 1. [WOODS-L] Woods Family of Abbeville S.Carolina
    2. I havent posted in awhile so I figured I'd try it again. I am seeking the family of William and Sussanah C McKinley Woods of Abbeville S.Carolina. According to an LDS Ancestral file record William was born abt 1752 in Virginia and married to Sussanah C McKinley on 25 Jan 1787 in Amelia Virginia. They ended up in the Old 96 district of South Carolina -Abbeville- where they raised their family. The children were as follows;James Woods b abt 1778 Michael abt 1780 Andrew abt 1782 Robert W abt 1784 William abt 1786 Isabella G abt 1788 Martha Bell abt 1790. I would certainly appreciate any information on Robert W Woods. Is this the same Robert Woods who resided in Troup County Georgia during the 1830's and 1840's?The same Robert Woods ended up in Coosa County Alabama by 1850 and resided there at least until 1866.He was married to an Elizabeth and had a fair sized family. It is beleived that Robert's brother Michael ended up in in Tennessee. Robert's father William died in 1804 and probated his will at that time. His mother Sussanah C Woods probated her will in 1829 in Abbeville.Robert was apparently living out od state. If anyone recognizes any of these people I would love to compare notes. It is known that John Woods settled in Putnam and Pulaski Counties in Georgia. Is anyone researching these families? Thanks! Russell
