    1. [WOODS-L] Re: [WOOD-ENG] New Subscriber
    2. J. L. WOOD
    3. Hello Larry, Enjoyed your posting about your WOOD line and can't help being a little envious that you're able to go back to 1610. I have been researching my direct WOOD Family Line; however, I can only go back to my g-grandfather, Jesse Lee(Leonidas?) WOOD b. 1839 in the USA. I have also been researching aother WOOD line in the UK which goes back 13 generations to 1578 in Devonshire, ENG and which I believe connects to my WOOD line but I haven't been able to prove yet. I have 2 questions about your WOOD line if you would be kind enough to answer: 1) Do you have anyone named Jesse WOOD and/or do you have any connections to the U.S.southern states? 2) Do you know the name of the descendants and/or the location in ENG that your WOOD line originated from? Thank you in advance for any info. you can provide. Sincerely, Jesse Lee "Jack" WOOD,III Powell, OH, USA (Formerly from TX) jwood1@mindspring.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: [WOOD-ENG] New Subscribers Date: Saturday, December 02, 2000 11:17 PM From: LWood67976@aol.com To: janwood@genie.co.uk Thank you for the active email site. I have not learned anything yet about my WOOD family but it has been fun reading all of the other research going on. I an a direct descendent of John Wood and Margaret Carter who were married at St. Saviours in Southwark 28 Jan 1610. John was a mariner who did some shipping for John Winthrop in the Massachusetts colony, with John eventually settling in Portsmouth, Rhode Island where he died in 1655. Margaret Carter Wood disappeared from the history about 1640 and family notes indicate that she might have been a victim of the Mespath Indian Massacre in Dutch New Amsterdam. At least the timing is correct. Perhaps I should send the Dutch a missing person report? There are many books written about this family line and I even have printing rights to one of them. I am considering additional research on John Wood in England prior to his marriage in 1610 but am uncertain as to how to begin. Perhaps some of these "WOOD Cousins" on the mailing list would give me some pointers. My current genealogy contains about 2,000 relatives and at least 400 persons born with the surname of WOOD. Since all Except John and 2 of his children were born in the Western Hemisphere, Colonial America and later, I am not sure if I can help the English research much. I will help however I can. Please make a note that my branch does not connect to the Atwood family, as many erroneous papers suggest. Wood Cousin, Larry Wood Dayton Ohio USA

    1. [WOODS-L] Ireland to Ontario 'Woods'
    2. Good morning to the Woods List ...I am interested in connecting with any individuals with Woods family connections in the Fermanagh County, Ireland area. Edward Woods emigrated to Ontario , Canada about 1848, with the Stephenson family from the same area. Edward married Ann Stephenson, they were settled in the Port Hope area for a period of time, then moved to Victoria County, Ontario, at Lindsay. If this family is of research interest to anyone, I ask that they email me privately. This is a one-time message. Due to my email volumes as host of 4 Genweb Counties, and database mail, I don't have the time to read the mail from the Rootsweb Woods List. ...regards, Michael Stephenson -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Victoria - Haliburton - Durham - Northumberland County Genweb Page Host - http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/5715/webindex.html Genealogical and Historical Databases for Upper Canada / Ontario Researchers - http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/5715/Database.html Genealogical Researcher for Victoria, Peterborough, Northumberland & Durham, Haliburton, Hastings, and Ontario Counties. - http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/5715/Research.html Michael C. 1. [WOODS-L] WOODS-ELLESTON-WORTMAN Family Bible
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. Came across an old family bible belonging to the WOODS-ELLESTON-WORTMAN family being auctioned on Ebay. It is an 1876 bible with the family record beginning with the June 6, 1896 marriage of Lewis Ross WOODS and Mamie ELLESTON both of Estherville, Iowa. It also refers to their son Robert Elliston WOODS b. 22 Jan 1902 who married Lola Belle WORTMAN on 28 Dec 1922 in Pasadena, California. Robert & Lola had a daughter Marjorie Jean WOODS b. 21 July 1925 and a son Robert Lewis WOODS b. 16 June 1934 both in Pasadena, California. I thought I'd pass this information along in hopes that someone might get the opportunity to recover a family heirloom. The auction ends December 5, 2000. You can go to www.ebay.com and look for item #513606154. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Hi Sherole, I miss-spelled Dorothy's name, sorry about that. I had to think about her message and decided I didn't answer her very well and I should have taken time to help her instead of preaching at the poor woman, duh. Her concern was that people would expect money for their suggestions and help over the internet and in truth I believe she is pretty new at this and had received some advice that simply isn't true. There are services that you can pay for, Dorothy, at monthly, quarterly or yearly rates and it's as simple as ,you don't pay, you don't get in. They all have free services and very good ones, a good example is the one you are on now. All the info. I have on my Barnes is what I wrote about except, BIG EXCEPT, the bible said, his people may have changed his name from Barnett/ Barnette to Barnes. I sure would like to know how to check the websites out on Henry WOODS. So far, it's all been negative. I'm off to checkthis link you sent for the BARNES Bunch, Thank-you so much and I do apologize. 3. Hi Evelyn, There isn't any connection that I can see at this time but am sending what LITTLE I have because this is my brickwall. From the bible: Franklin Vernon Barnes, French, from Louisiana, possibly died in Michigan. He is my grandfather, married to Minnie Woods, five children, Glen, Harold Jack ), Laurie', Leonard ( died when he was 18mos. buried in the Conklin Plot, Niobrara, NE ) and my mother, La Verne. Granddad was a rolling stone. Doubt he was ever in one place long enough to be on a census. I have one very poor snapshot of him, never knew him. My grandmother raised her children in NE. I really wish I could track this man down because he is leaving a big hole in my pedigree chart. Bonnie

My son gave me my first computer last June and I have so enjoyed all the people I have met on the internet and I belong to the WOODS, CORNISH, VALENTINE and BARNES lists plus all the county list's and no one has ever asked me for any more than a thank-you for their help. I in turn ,help anyone I can and I don't ask for anything other than the pleasure of having information some one can use. Remember we are all cousins, Bonnie

    1. [WOODS-L] Charles Woods 1750
    2. Does anyone have a Charles Woods in their line born around 1750? He would have gone to medical school--possibly in Philadelphia, but that is just a guess. He emigrated to St. Croix, Danish West Indies (now US Virgin Islands) around 1781, possibly because he was a loyalist, who knows? He was married to a woman named Sarah. Their children were born in the West Indies as well, where he was a surgeon. Thanks in advance for any clues. Laura in North Carolina

He married a Sarah and had four children, among the Matilda Ann Wood, 1789, Edward Wood, 1797 and William Henry Wood, 1801. Charles died in St. Croix 30 Oct. 1810, age 60. 1. Re: [WOODS-L] Edward W. WOOD
    2. Judie, I appreciate your reply to my post. We may have a common ancester back there somewhere. My Winslow J. WOOD was born in N.Y. and his wife Mercy MEAD was also born in N.Y. I do know that there are a lot of Winslow names among the WOOD/WOODS. My mother's father was Wm. Winslow WOOD. His grandfather was Winslow J. WOOD. I have seen a lot of Winslow WOOD names in my research. I wonder if there was a Winslow who was prominent in American History. I don't know history well enough to say. I do know that Winslow J. had a son named DeWitt Clinton WOOD. On my father's side, there were a couple of Andrew Jackson SALISBURYs and a Martin VanBuren SALISBURY. If in fact there was a prominent man in history named Winslow, then the fact that Winslow shows up in several WOOD & WOODS families does not necessarily indicate a common thread of relationship. On the other hand I wonder if there are very many other families of the same time period that had a penchant for naming sons Winslow ? Oh well, it certainly needs more research. Thanks again for the response. If you find a connection, please let me know also.
