How interesting! Do you know if there are allergies in the Woods line? Usually allergies are often an unknown source of depression, and few folks know that the 'workability' of anti-depressants is probably only their anti-histaminic effect, nothing more. I know this from personal experience with the stuff and finally finding out I was atopic (meaning, genetically the immune system is programmed wrong and the body reacts with the heavy artillary of the immune system -- Immunoglobulin E and attendant cytokines -- in order to 'fight off' anything perceived as foreign, and it perceives EVERYTHING as foreign to it, even foods!) I found that if I took benedryl (diephenhydramine, like what's in Excedrin PM) that the depression quickly lifts. Just thought I would pass this along if it is of interest to anyone. I also have the vision thing you refer to. I'm very interested in medicine, genetics, immunity and exactly how our body works at a cellular and subcellular level. Fas! cinating stuff, and this particularly interesting because I was adopted out of the Woods family and had no knowledge of any of this stuff. Happy New Year to all WOODS ! Ruben WOODS 1st married Roda FARRIS April 17th, 1873 in Clay County, KY in the residence of George FARRIS. 2nd marriage was to Flora Bowling, March 16,1905 in Clay County. Are any of these name is your WOODS tree? I was also told growing up that our Cherokee blood came from the WOODS side. Marie
Hi All, I am new to the list and researching the ancestors and decendants of James Woods b. 1808 in county Monaghan, Ireland d.Dec 6 1892 Molesworth, Victoria, Australia. James migrated to Port Phillip, Sydney on the "Allan Ker" in 1840 with his wife Jane and children Isaac, Betty & Mary. Am happy to share any information I have with others researching this family tree. Regards, Margaret Researching: Woods, Wright, Richardson, Gehrig, Murray, Lankester, Carman, Barthelson, Batty, Corry,Reuss.
Hi fellow researchers, since it has been a long time since I have posted this and we are on Woods and Cherokees I have this to ask. My wife is a WOODS decendent from a Samuel B. WOODS b. 1838 Tenn. and d. 1906 Arkansas. We have a copy of a letter written in the late 1890's, we think. In it he give his linage as follows: Father: Samuel WOODS Mother Matilda Clepper grandfather Martin WOODS grandmother Betsy VANN G-Grandfather Joe WOODS G-Grandmother Polly Clyne The letter states that Betsy VANN and Polly CLYNE were both Cherokee Indians from the Sequatchee Valley, Tenn. With this letter we have spent more than 8 years trying to find them with no luck. This is just one proof of the WOODS and Cherokee connection. If any of you have any connection or information on any of these people please contact me. Thanks. Roland Hall
Hello Rick, Don't think I can be of much help but I couldn't help noticing the spelling of your last name and the subject. There are quite a few WOOD/WOODS lines that have Cherokee ancestry as well as some from other tribes. My grandfather, Dr. Charles Franklin WOOD, b. 18 Mar 1871 in Covington, Tipton Co., TN. He was m. 27 Oct 1898 in Ardmore, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, (OK) to Isa Lee ROWLES b. 18 Jan 1878 or 1880 Cooper Co., MO. She was my grandmother and was part Cherokee Indian. My grandparents were separated/ divorced when my father was a small child and I've never been able to determine if the Cherokee ancestry came from her father, John S. "Joe" ROWLES, b. 3 Jan 1849 in MO or her mother, Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" MARTIN, b. 1855 in Gainsville, Cooke Co., TX. I'm curious about the spelling of your name "ROLES" since the name ROWLES has also been spelled various ways. You might try checking with Darryl ROWLES if you are interested in the ROWLES Line. He has done a lot of work on this Family and can be contacted at: <drowles@bigfoot.com>. He used to have his database on a Website but I tried the URL I had and it no longer is working. Good Luck with your research! Best regards, Jesse Lee "Jack" WOOD,III Powell, OH (Formerly from TX) jwood1@mindspring.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: [WOODS-L] Woods / Cherokee Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2001 15:47:31 -0600 From: Apollo <rroles@kscable.com> To: WOODS-L@rootsweb.com I have seen a number of messages lately through this list that mentions Woods and Cherokees in the same sentence. I'm pretty new to this list and was unaware of the Woods/Cherokee connection. I've been researching A Martha Elizabeth Woods that married James Rolls in Barry Co. Mo. 1838. The family is fairly certain that she was of Cheorkee descent. She lists her birth place as Ky circa 1820. She also lists her father as Irish and her mother as Ky born. Were there many Cherokee Woods in Ky in the early 1800's? Are there any good sources for invistigating along these lines? I thought I had the parents of Martha Elizabeth Woods .. that being Archibald Woods that married Frances "Fanny" Hill in Madison Co. Ky. 1806. I have spent my time trying to find the Cherokee on the Hill side.. perhaps I have the wrong parents and the Cherokee is on the Woods side. Any help or suggestions as to where to look would be greatly appreciated. Rick Roles
Wheel and Cards: My mother used to have what she called a set of Cards, two wooden paddle shaped boards with nails sticking out like brush bristles. These were used to brush or card the wool or cotton and stretch the fibers so that they could be spun on the spinning wheel in order to spin thread and thereby make cloth. Thelma W.
I also have an Indian Woods line in my family: was told it was Cherokee but find in research that the area is more populated by Choctaw Indians (in MS.) Woods in this case was of French descent, and related to trapping trade I am told; but he is supposed to have married a woman of "100% Cherokee Indian blood" (by my mother's description) and as yet have very few names to work with (Albert Herbert Woods is all, with a possible connection to "Gean" family(?)) Are Choctaw Indians in MS part of a Cherokee tribe? Woods was in western NC quite a bit, maybe even western TN, but his mother lived in MS along with sibs, then later in Louisiana.. This reference to sources to look is quite helpful. Thank you Roderiques! Mia Roderiques <roderiques@earthlink.net> wrote: you might also try the Cherokee list from Rootsweb for resources. There are some folks on there who have spent a long while beating the paper bushes for information and can tell you where to start looking. If there is Cherokee in your line, you have the advantage in the tradition they had as good record-keepers. Don't overlook the census entries marked "mulatto" on the census. This meant anyone of color - even as little as 1/16th "colored blood" would label one as non-white even into the 1940s. It is a Catch-22 of sorts, though. On one hand, someone with a trace amount of Native blood could be labeled mulatto. On the other hand, many of "mixed blood" who could "pass" as Caucasian, did so -- changed their names, moved to where they were not known and for as far as anyone knew where as "white" as the original Pilgrims from the Mayflower. Some saw it as the only way to improve their lot in life. ==== WOODS Mailing List ==== No part of these messages nor the archives file containing them may be published or redistributed in any form by a "FOR PROFIT" or commercial organization.
I have seen a number of messages lately through this list that mentions Woods and Cherokees in the same sentence. Rick Roles
Below is part of my ggg-grandfather's estate papers. I hope this may, in some way, help someone else or may help someone help me! I have several questions about it so I will ask them first. First, could someone explain the process in which an estate settlement is done. It looks as if the widow may get a few things and then the rest is sold. If so, who gets the money from what is sold? It has listed that James Stagg, Archibald Nichols, and William Woods as three freeholders. What does the term "freeholders" mean? Also it says that one wheel and one pair of cards to be the absolute property of the petitioner. What is a wheel and cards? On another paper I do not have listed below it shows John C. McCown, William McCown and Frederick C. Green (I think it is Green. The handwriting is difficult to read) as the buyers. Does anyone know anything about or have any information concerning James Stagg, Archibald Nichols, William Woods, John and William McCown and Frederick Green? Hello patinfla I will be talking with my mom today and will ask her about her Woods family but she is one who likes the gambling boats. lol Who knows, maybe it does run in the family. lol Her grandfather was James Roy Woods (called Roy) from TN and MO. Take care, Nora
I've suspected, but been unable to prove, that my 4th g-grandfather - John Woods(b. abt. 1770) of Sullivan Co., TN - might be related to this William Woods who m. Keziah Acklin. There was an Acklin Woods(b. abt. 1798) of Sullivan County who appears to have been related to my John Woods. Could this be Christopher Acklin Woods, son of William? John's eldest son was named William(b. 1805). John Woods married three times: 1) Elizabeth Hughes, 2) Elizabeth Carson, 3) Agnes Torbett(nee Hughes?). I would appreciate any info or thoughts anyone has. I have considerable info on the children of John Woods if anyone is interested. Thanks, Craig J. Woods Aurora, CO
Hi Listers, I'm researching a branch of the Woods family and thought I would get in on this. I do think certain things run through families. My branch of the Woods line seems to have a very prominent nose. Another trait that seems to come out in each generation is gambling. It doesn't seem to make any difference what type, cards, horse racing, or casinos. Does this ring a bell with anyone? patinfla Shop Safely Online Without a Credit Card http://www.rocketcash.com
Thanks to everyone who responded back about the chest deformity that runs in my Wood family. Last year I was researching a different family line and some lady started talking about medical conditions that ran in the family and I have to admit that I thought she was "off her rocker". Now I guess I'm rather desperate because suddenly this seems like pretty decent circumstancial evidence of connections on my Wood family. I have now heard from 3 people who may possibly be researching lost siblings of my Wood orphan Herbert. They all have the same deformity in the family, were "orphaned" or simply have no known parents in the same time period and same place. I also may have found one of Herbert's cousins. Interesting! Of course this will take a TON of more research- but hey- I feel like I have more to go on than I did last week. It looks to me like the LeRoy H. Wood in 1860 census of Wisconsin is Herbert's father, and perhaps his grandfather is LeRoy G. Wood also of Wisconsin (previously lived in NY). This is getting exciting for sure! Now all I need is some hard evidence to prove my ideas. Thanks to all of you !!! The Research Continues! Sheri at lequia@elite.net
I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has a connection. My Nancy Woods b. 1806 Orange Co, NC, married Hymelius Patton b. 1805 Orange Co, NC on 26 Oct 1824 Orange Co, NC. I have been told by an elderly family researcher that Nancy's family was connected to the Chisenhalls--perhaps her mother was a Chisenhall--however her memory was fuzzy on this and her research was stolen from her home many years ago, so there is no possibility of her backing up this claim. I believe my Hymelius Patton may be a descendant of Alexander Patton of Haw Olde Fieldes (a son was named Alexander). There were Woods who lived nearby. Among them were Matthew Woods and Margaret Faucette, who although they appear to be the most likely candidates as Nancy's parents, have all but been ruled out by Woods researchers who are more knowledgeable about this particular Woods family that ended up in SC. Hymelius & Nancy left Orange County ca. 1833 for the Sequatchie Valley of Tennessee, possibly migrating with one of Nancy's brothers. Hymelius himself claimed to be Cherokee! , according to a grandson. It is likely he was of mixed descent. It may be that a prevailing prejudice against the Cherokee in those years was what prompted the migration to Tennessee. The Woods and Pattons, by the way, have connections that go back to Pennsylvania and ultimately Scotland. Well, hopefully we have some new list members trying out their new computers Santa brought them and this will be familiar to someone. All locations are Orange County, NC unless otherwise noted. Harrison WOODS born abt 1805 (per census) died bet 1870-1800 in Orange County, NC. Married Patsie CARDEN. Marriage bond filed Sept. 23, 1831 and bond set by Calous MOIZE. Patsie CARDEN born abt 1810, died before 1870. Harrison and Patsie's children: 1. James, born abt 1832 2. Carolina, born abt 1834 3. William Washington, born Feb. 12, 1835, died March 20, 1918. Married Martha L. CLINTON January 14, 1858. A. WILKERSON was bondsman. (Martha's sister, Mary, married Washington DUKE). 4. John H. Woods, born abt 1839 In 1860. a 9-year old Martha SHAMBLEY is living with Harrison and Patsie Woods. Questions and speculations: 1. Is Caroline Woods the same Caroline Woods for whom there was a marriage bond filed with William C. CHAMBLEE in January 1852? The bondsman on this bond was John R. CHAMBLEE. A John Ruffin CHAMBLEE married Alice CLINTON in 1848. I believe, but cannot prove, that Alice CLINTON was a sister of Martha and Mary Clinton. 2. A Bastardy Bond filed in Orange County Court on Feb. 25, 1783 shows that a Phoebe BRITTAIN named Harrison WOODS as the father of her child. (gender not given). How does this Harrison fit into the WOODS line, and who was Phoebe BRITTAIN? 3. A Harris WOODS born abt 1764 married Jemimah FORRESTER in 1800 in Orange County. Jemimah was a daughter of Sarah WOOD and Benjamin FORRESTER. Jemimah's siblings married into the CHISENHALL, LEATHER, DOSSETT families -- all of which names are associated with the WOODS in various ways. In several census, there are DOSSETT and FORRESTER very near Harrison and Patsie WOODS. William and Patsie Woods named one of their sons Jesse HARRISON and another HARRIS. 4. A land deed transfer between MALONE and Stacey CARDIN for land near present day Camden Ave in Durham lists one of the boundaries as next to Buck Woods and Prentis CHISENHALL. One of the census (I think 1840 but need to go back and check my dates) lists Harrison Woods living near Rueben and Stacey CARDIN. Could Patsie be a daughter of Stacey and Rueben? Does anyone have a list of their children? Renee W. Roderiques NC lines: Woods, Carrington, Pickett, Clinton, Vickers, Preddy, Blackley.
