Emily, I agree with you. You have to learn to walk before you can crawl. I have worked and worked and worked on my Woods lineage and can't get beyond my Grandparents soooo I don't have anything to contribute until I can find out who my Great Grandparents are. Does that make sense? I do have contributions regarding my other lines but the Woods site would not be interested in that. Sherole
I have just located the birth record of a Dee Etta Wood/Woods born 1882 in Arkansas, Cleborne county. Her parents are the same as those of my orphaned ancestor Herbert/Bert Wood/Woods. My Herbert was born in Wisconsin, and I know the family was there in 1867, but I couldn't find them after his birth, and wasn't sure who any of the siblings were. Now I know that Dee Etta had to be the youngest sibling of my Herbert. I know she married a Mr. Harmon in Shiloh, Cleborne county Arkansas in 1898. Do any of you connect with Dee Etta Wood/Woods born Arkansas 1882 to LeRoy Wood and Ellen Forrest? My ancestor is her oldest brother. Please contact me ! Thanks. One of Archibald and Isabella Goss Woods's son was William Woods.William was born abt 1744-1752 in Virginia and married according to the LDS page in Amelia Viirginia on 25 January 1787 to Sussanah Catherine McKinley. She was born abt 1756.Their children; James Woods b 1778 Michael Woods 1780 Andrew C Woods 1782 Robert W Woods b abt 1784 John Woods b abt 1786 Isabella G Woods abt 1788 Martha Bell Woods abt 1790-married to Samuel Drinkwater. Esther-? Sussanah -? William Died in 1804 in Abbeville and left his will. His Wife Sussanah C Woods died in 1829 and probated her will at that time. Most of the children were living out of state at that time.Has anyone researched this family and their children.I know that John Woods has been researched but what Robert W Woods? Has anyone any theories on his whereabouts? Is he the same Robert Woods who turned up in Troup County Georgia during the 1830's and 40's and then settled in Coosa County Alabama during the 50;s and 60's. Accoring to the 1850 and 1860 Alabama Censuses Robert's wife's name was "Elizabeth" All of their children were born in Georgia which means they were in Georgia as early as 1810.If anyone has researched the other siblings I would love to hear from you. William's father Archibald and indeed his father Michael Woods have been researched but nothing on William's family.Ancestry has nothing on William either. Please take a few minutes look through your files and see if you have anything at all on this line! Thanks! Russell
I have recently uploaded my Woods family information at the following location: http://homestead.juno.com/glendafj/files/index.html Maybe someone on the list can make a connection. Glenda
All this pet peeve stuff is a waste of my time. Either you are serious about family research and want to learn, so you read the postings, or you only want to add to your data base.Either you share or keep your information to yourself. Everyone is new to this at some point in time and all of us have and will make mistakes. You run across a lotof Genealogy snobs out there and the best defense is the delete button. This is my one more useless comment. Emily Matthews researching Woods, Kittles ,Moores ,Adams and many more
insuffecient information in the subject line is only one of the frustrating problems in connecting with other researchers, and one of the easiest to avoid. As another researcher pointed out, most experienced researchers have learned to just ignore 'Searching for my grand-ma' messages. These are usually posted by newbies and if they are serious they'll eventually learn how to use the lists and boards. If they aren't serious they are just a waste of time anyway. My most frustrating experiences are with the 'parasites', those people who contact you seeking information yet never share any significant information in return. They are easy to recognize, they are the ones that stop answering your emails as soon as you give them the names of five generations of their ancestors. Their first email to you usually contains something to the effect of 'I'm trying to trace the WOODS family' or 'What do you know about the WOODS family', or my favorite 'Send me everything you can about the WOODS family'. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
For over a year I have been working on posting an index of names for the marriage and death notices printed in the Vermont Chronicle, an old newspaper that was published between 1826 and 1896. The notices cover towns state wide, and also cover other places, including, but not limited to: Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Canadian Provinces and beyond. The death notices are not full obituaries as we know them today, but sometimes contain other useful information besides the location, name and age of the person. The marriage notices usually just note the bride and groom, but sometimes names of parents. Currently I have the Indexes for 1826-1850 online, with more added as time permits. You can find the indexes at: http://www.middlebury.edu/~swilson/introvc.html Thanks for your interest, hope it can help you in your searches. Sylvia Wilson

Dee & others, Good Idea! All too often I see postings to lists or internet query boards with too little information in the subject line to tell if it is worth my time to read the post. Make the subject line work for you! The more information you one has in the subject line, the better the chance of the right person reading the post. Not all subscribers have the time or energy to read all messages in search for that elusive match. Many, open only those which appear promising. MAXIMIZE the chances of YOUR MESSAGE BEING READ BY YOUR INTENDED AUDIENCE, that is YOUR MATCH! HOW? Use the SUBJECT LINE to give very SPECIFIC DETAILS about the individual/family your are looking for. Subscribers to most other genealogy lists do precisely that. Furthermore, to facilitate reading, they tend to follow some sort of 'not so rigid format'. Examples: ?WOODS John, b1840, Miami, Florida, USA ?WOOD/Woods Timothy, m1790, SMITH E., in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil WOODS, Ray, Elaine, Susan, res. 1870, in Camden, NJ WOODS Joshua & Jessie, m. 1891, Portage IN Notice the pattern? 1) SURNAME always in capital letter (even within the text of the email), then 2) First and Second names of individuals. Commas to separate individuals. 3) Date with a letter indicating whether it is birth, marriage, death, residing. Worthwhile, even if it is very broad. If someone is looking for WOODS in 1600s, they don't really mind if your 1800 date is off by a few years. 4) Location, State, Country. In full, to reach those yet unfamiliar with the area and its abbreviations. 5) If you have a question preceed the Subject with a queston mark, if you have informaion about the subject, omit the question mark. Subscribers AVOID using subject lines that may not carry sufficient meaning to others, such as: WOODS family My family My WOODS My Ancestors Searching Aim for QUALITY AUDIENCE: YOUR MATCH. Hope this helps someone. Ernie & Connie Originally posted on WOODS-L by: Jorge Woods, in Canberra, Australia. I am on a few lists and really enjoy them. I have never really made any connections to my families. But still keep looking. BUT ONE THING FRUSTRATES ME that is that people post things and exspect me to know what state they are talking about when they give the name of a city or county. Sorry but I don't. Dee

I am looking for a Charles Woods, born around 1750, a surgeon "born in America." He was in the Virgin Islands in 1781, and I wonder if he had been in the Revolutionary War? His next generations always said "born in US" and claimed US citizenry. There's a possible Philadelphia connection in the second generation. Anyone have any ideas where to look (online?) for Rev. War surgeons? Thanks in advance. Laura in NC
"The following is a copy of the letter from the Pension Office previously referred to: OFFICE OF THE COMMISIONER DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR BUREAU OF PENSIONS WASHINGTON March 13, 1906 Hon. R.D. Cole House of Representatives Washington D.C. My dear Mr. Cole: In response to your letter dated March 10, 1906, and received March 12, 1906, I have the honor to advise you that papers in claim, Widow Files 4105, show that Joseph Woods marched from Bolton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, to the Battle of Lexington, and afterwards enlisted as a private and served 8 months in Captain Benjamin Hastings' Co., Col. Asa Whitcomb's Massachusetts Regiment; reenlisted April 6, 1777, and served three years as a Corporal in Col. Timothy Bigelow's 15th Massachusetts Regiment; he was in the battles of Bunker Hill and Saratoga. He died October 12, 180(?6?), and was buried at Sudbury, Rutland County, Vermont. He married Keziah Goddard of Marlborough, April 4, 1782. Her claim was allowed on an application executed May 4, 1839, at which date she was seventy-eight ars of age and a resident of Saybrook, Ashtabula County, Ohio. Very respectfully (signed) J.L. Davenport 1st Deputy Commisioner' Mr. Cole was our Representative in Congress at the date of my letter and it was through Mr. Benton of this city, his secretary, that my inquiry was made. Our ancestor was, no doubt, of English descent, as 'Woods' is an English name. He must have lived in Bolton in 1775 for the Minute Men marched directly from their homes to Lexington. I found in the State Library at Columbus, a work entitled GENEALOGY OF NEW ENGLAND FAMILIES and, in it, a genealogy of the Woods Family, down to a period a few years later than 1700. It seems the family was a numerous one and I have no doubt our ancstor was a later member of it. Joseph and Keziah (Goddard) Woods had a family of children, how many is not known. We do know of three daughters and one son, Edmund W. Woods, who lived in South Reading, Vermont, in 1850. Their first daughter was named Keziah, for her mother, and she was born May 25, 1786. She married Moses Wiswell. Another daughter, whose name was Sarah, married Luther Landford. I have not been able to learn m ore of their family, except that there was probably another daughter with whom 'Granny Woods' lived at one time, who resided in Ashtabula County, Ohio. The Federal Census of 1790 shows one sone and three daughters. Our ancestor was not married at the time he went into the War and, I assume, he was a young man at least twenty years old. That would make him 27 when he married. His wife's age is known, she was in her 22nd year when she was married. I think we may safely assume he was not many years older. If he was born about 1755, he was about 55 when he died. He died in Sudbury, Vermont, October 12, 1897 so the letter states and its accuracy cannot be questioned for that is the statement of his widow when she made her application for a pension as such widow. Joseph WOODS Keziah GODDARD Born December 1760 Died October 12, 1807 Died April 17, 1848 Married at Marlborough, Mass., Apr.4, 1782 Children: 1. Edmund W., Lived at South Reading Vermont in 1850 2.
